If you've heard of black crested macaques or the Yaki monkey, it is probably this one:

This black crested macaque became famous in 2011 when the photographer David Slater was taking photos in the jungle of Sulawesi Indonesia where black crested macaques are indigenous fauna. Slater was not the photographer who captured this photo, however. It was the macaque who has since been commonly called Naruto who took its own photograph on Slater's camera. The famous monkey selfie sparked a copyright lawsuit brought by PETA onto Slater, which was settled in 2017 with an agreement that Slater would donate a percentage of any profits gained by the pictures Naruto took to organizations that protect this species in the wild.

For the millions who enjoyed Naruto's selfies online, the story ends there. For Naruto and the Yaki the story continues. The black crested macaque is critically endangered. Slater's website says he donates 10% of the proceeds of all "monkey selfie" merchandise to "a monkey conservation project in Sulawesi", and while he does not specify which conservation project he supports, there is one I know of that does incredible work.

Selamatkan Yaki is an operation with a huge impact. The Yaki is one of the most endangered primates in the world, and it can be difficult to gauge just how many of them are out there. This is where biodiversity monitoring comes in to produce the data needed for effective conservation protocol. A pilot study was conducted in Tangkoko Nature Reserve, which has created the blueprint for surveying the entire province using camera traps and remote sensing to observe the Yaki and their threats over time.

Using the data gathered from monitoring, Selamatkan Yaki collaborated with the government agency for natural resource conservation to create a Species Action Plan (SAP). This species action plan is not only an evidence based conservation plan designed to save the Yaki, but all the other species that share its forest home. Establishing the Yaki as a flagship species is crucial as this charismatic monkey is just one of many species that is not found anywhere else in the world.

One of the major threats Yaki face, like many other primate species, is hunting for wildlife trafficking and the bush meat trades. While hunting the Yaki is illegal, it takes a true culture shift to keep endangered animals out of traps and cages. Selamatkan Yaki has developed both community conservation and environmental education programs designed to unite local communities in protecting the species. The community conservation program involves surveys conducted since 2007 so that long term data on human-animal relationships can be tracked to best identify community conservation methods. This data is used in the environmental education program which introduces information on biodiversity and conservation to school curriculum and provides research opportunities and scholarships for post secondary students to contribute to conservation.

Selamatkan Yaki understands that it isn't enough to have a team of people dedicated to saving the black crested macaque-- the more people who care and help the better. Everyone has a role to play in conservation, but right now so many people outside Indonesia have only ever seen the black crested macaque once, in a photo online. That's why I'm partnering with Selamatkan Yaki to spread information about the work they do and the species they protect. You had known Carlos since you both were 18, and always had an especial connection, but you never saw it like anything romantic. For the last 2 years of friendship, you tried to accompany him to some tournaments, so you were now in Melbourne, Australia. Watching his matches and eating sushi the night before. Even though you have been friends for years, a few months ago, you started to realize that this was probably love, because no one travels around the whole world just to support a friend every time they ask for, no?.

But you ignored the fact that his eyes were always on you, and every little thing you do. But now you guys were so distracted to think about stupid theories like those. The night before his match with Zverev, he invited you to eat sushi as usual, but when you arrived at his hotel room you noticed, it was just him.

"It's just you and me?". You ask certainly confused. You entered his room and sat at the edge of his bed. He wasn't a very messy person, but he had a bit of clothes around the room, his suitcase on the floor full of things and the door of the bathroom open, from where you could feel the humidity of a recently used shower, and you could also tell from his semi-wet hair.

"Yes, you wanted to invite someone else?". He asks a bit concerned, you know him very well, he's much of a people pleaser, so you have to reassure him. "No... It's good to be just us". You say with a sweet smile and looking around. "The sushi is almost here". He says looking down at you. "It's ok, I'm not that hungry". You answer sweetly not to worry him. "What about we watch a movie while eating?". You propose with a smile. "Sounds good". He answered with his big representative smile.

Then you took the TV remote and started sapping, and you decided to watch a rom-com. During the dinner, you started to feel very cold, cause Carlos loved to have the A.C at its lowest temperature, and you loved it too, but the humidity from the bathroom didn't help with the cold. Carlos noticed that and hugged you from your shoulders. "Are you cold?". He asked in a whisper near your lobe, you could feel his warmth, it made you feel safe and cozy. "Yes, a little." You answer blushing a little. Then Carlos got up from bed and opened his suitcase and took out one of his Nike favorite hoodies, a very classic but pretty white hoodie with a little logo of a colorful tennis court. "Here, have it". He Said sweetly and extended it to you. You took it and put it on, it was cozy, you could smell his scent. "thanks", you limit yourself to say. The night was amazing, so wonderful that Carlos stayed awake thinking about the situation he was in with his relationship with you, a difficult one... A platonic romantic friendship.

The next day, he was extremely tired, he even fell asleep while eating breakfast. So by the time of the match, he was exhausted physically. He lost the match, for way too much difference. He felt stupid, not enough. He had already tried to improve those aspects of self-sabotage with his psychologist, but today was not his day to think about that. He was destroyed, he felt like nothing.

So when he got to his room, he limited himself to throw his bags to the floor and do the same with his "useless" body. But suddenly he heard a knock, a special one, one that only y/n used with her loved ones. It was something little but he was a person of details, and he liked to remember that kind of things. He wasn't good with birthdays, words or dancing, nor even signing, but learning little details of his loved ones was definitely his thing, it was his way to show love and this was her little detail to remember. He got up from the cold floor and walked a few steps towards the door, his eyes were red from some sobbing on the way to his room, but he felt strong enough to face y/n. He opened the door and just threw himself into her arms, and started sobbing. "I'm sorry". She said sweetly while caressing his nape. "you made everything you could". "No, I didn't made enough". He said to her and also for himself to hear. "of course you did, sometimes it is good to know our limits, maybe your body was just... Exhausted". She says trying her best to comfort him. He picked her up, and carried her to his bed. He jumped to bed with her in his arms. He just wanted to cuddle. "I think I need you... I can't hide it anymore". He says in a sweet voice. "I know you feel it too, I can see it in your eyes". He says looking Deeply into her eyes. "I know you think we guys never notice, but I do". He says before caressing her hand. "Be my girlf..." He couldn't even finish the sentence because you were already kissing him in a sweet subtly way.

Friday 5:

1. I thought it was going to be slick as hell this morning, but thankfully it wasn't. Still had to call in to work... #thanksgastricsystem

2. That being said, I really think I'd enjoy remote work more. I like my coworkers, but I'm trying to put up time boundaries and so far it's not really working. We work when there is product, so having 2 administrators there on a day like today is pointless, but I'd still have a difficult time getting a dictation of a SAP script done so that we don't have to rely on our support team so much. And I realize that I'm only in week 4, but the heat is there because another huge facility in our company goes live in a few days with a ton more product offerings, and not enough support to go around. So yeah...#sinkorswim

3. I will probably have the weekend off too, which is nice, and we have zero plans. Probably put away Christmas, clean a little, try to find a thank you gift for my stepson for fixing our sink(He, his wife, and their kids are such a delight!)... low key. Hell, I might even read a bit. READ, OMFG!!!!! H got me a book about "chasing the burst", the stories about the wood and the people who built the legendary guitars of Gibson and other great builders, and Im dying to just soak it all in. Funny thing is some of that wood can be traced to a mill that used to exist about 5 blocks from my house, and MANY moons ago Gibson took loads of blocks out of the maple grove right across from the farm we used to rent. (Fun fact: I have an aging burl from that grove that someday will become a guitar...someday...lol). Anyhoo... #nerdout

4. Speaking of which, I just finished the Audible version of Bono's book, "Surrender", and it was moving. It always amazes me the circles in which runs, like knowing people; but then it also amazes me that I've met people with whom he's friends. And to that end, I'm sure that I have very few degrees of separation with quite a few of yall, we just don't know it... lol! #itsasmallworld

5. I think that eventhough I've started this new job, and I'm really enjoying the challenge, I'm going to start looking at jobs with guitar manufacturers that match my education and skill set. Totally dreaming, I know, but here's the thing: I need to have an outlt for my passion for music. If it's not making the music, it has to be part of the supply chain that builds the instruments that make the music. It can be done ethically, with sourcing that's environmentally considerate, and at price points so that people getting into music can take those instruments and keep the tradition going. It's not me saying I'm quitting my craft, it's me making saying I want to commit to making the craft accessible and sustainable. #itstooearlyforthebullshitgeoff, #shhhhhh

Lotura Week 2023 Day 1 - Space Mall Sillies Drabble

The (Im)perfect Mattress

“Oh,” Princess Allura of Altea—soon to be Empress Allura—whined as she stretched out on a mattress at the space mall. Her blue and purple skirts fanned about her legs in a stiff line. “This is far too hard. It feels like sleeping on the floor of Blue Lion.” 

Emperor Lotor of the Galra had lain beside her. His velvet voice was contemplative. “I disagree, princess. In fact, I fear it is not hard enough to support my form.”

She turned her cheek to him, and her curls intermixed with the straight locks of his hair as he turned to her.

“You can’t possibly be serious,” she said. “This is the hardest bed I’ve ever had the misfortune of testing.”

He huffed back at her. “Galran bones are heavier and require significant firmness to avoid misalignment.” His sharp face twisted in a merry pout. “Do you wish back pain upon your husband-to-be?”

Allura moaned, running her hands over her face. “By the stars, this is the third mattress shop in the mall, and we’re no closer to landing on a marriage bed than we were two vargas ago.”

Lotor raised up on his arm, cradling in his cheek in his hand. He playfully narrowed his eyes, which glowed slightly in the mall’s fluorescent lights. “I’ll have you know,” he said, reaching out to poke her sensitive side, “I’m quite fine with this one.”

The princess squeaked, recoiling from the poke and swatting his hand away. “How cruel of you to say. Do you wish back pain upon your wife-to-be?”  

His lazy fingers—Lotor had grown more at ease in recent times, more playful—swirled against one of her curls as his expression grew pensive. “In truth, I desire your comfort as much as my own. Perhaps we can cut two mattresses in half and then sew the halves together.”

Allura actively considered the idea, rubbing her chin. “But what if we wish to cuddle in the middle? I do like cuddling.”

Lotor bit his lip as his eyebrows knitted together. Allura’s white curls slid against his fingers. “As do I. Which does pose a challenge to my solution, yes. I suppose you could rest on top of me in such cases.”

Her expression grew mischievous. “Is that an invitation?”

“For all time, princess.”

She giggled, her toes wiggling in her royal slippers. “You terrible tease. We’re already in trouble for, um, holographic interface indecencies during our remote conference with the planet Numoria.”

His eyes blew wide with innocence. “That is besides the point, which is that we have a solution to our marriage bed problem.” His chest puffed out. “We shall graft two mattresses into one, just as we graft our worlds and our lives together.”

Allura, still laying on her back, reached up to stroke Lotor’s cheek. “I do like that concept,” she said, voice soft.

He leaned into her touch, closing his eyes to fervently kiss her palm.

For one brief tick, they forgot they were in public. It took the shifting of elevator music to shake them out of their daze—along with the snapping of pictures from a few reporters from the Intergalactic Gazette, curious of the space royals on their day out shopping.

Lotor’s elfin ear flicked, and he turned to the store windows, the heat in his eyes sapping with a mild embarrassment as his cheeks flushed a deep lavender.

Allura turned to follow his gaze, and she froze, making a noise. “Oh. Um. It appears we’ve attracted quite a following.”

The emperor set his jaw, face still hot. “So we have,” he murmured, voice halted. “Have they been following us all along?”

“I don’t remember them around the first two shops,” she whispered. “Perhaps they congregated upon making the poor shop keeper whine that we are impossible to please.”

He turned back to her. “I do not wish to cause an incident, but I’m afraid pictures of us testing mattresses may inspire…strange headlines.”

The princess giggled despite her embarrassment. “What do you suppose we do?”

“…In this case, perhaps we retreat,” he said. And then he regally slipped off the bed and onto the softest mattress nearby—designed for the water beings of Wutrax II. With royal grace, he sunk into it with his heavy Galran bones, nearly disappearing from sight.

The princess giggled and then stood from the bed, calling, “Oh, but how will we manage to get you out?”   

From out of the material came his muffled voice, somewhat in awe. “I’m not sure.” And then there was a beat of silence before he added, “But do you know, this is not entirely uncomfortable. Rather like being cocooned.”

Her face faulted. “Oh. Oh no. Lotor, no, please. Tell me you jest. What was that again about requiring some form of support?”

“I do entreat you to try it with me, and at least you will not be seen by the crowds.”

Allura bit her lip, glanced back at the store windows, and then dared to lean into the water bed, only to squeak as she slipped down into the heavy depression. She found herself lying atop a warm and perfectly firm but perfectly pliable Lotor.

The shop owner walked by, shaking his head as Allura’s giggle echoed up.

“Oh,” came her delighted voice. “Actually, this is quite nice, yes.”

Summary: Gwyneth was Velaris University's star swimmer. . . emphasis on was. After a nasty rotator cuff injury, she's been ordered to take the rest of the season off and attend weekly physical therapy sessions, which is less than ideal considering her whole college education is funded by an athletic scholarship. It isn't all bad though. She has PT at the same time as a very intimidatingly attractive soccer player, and much to Gwyn's surprise, they've got quite a bit in common. But between work, school, her physical therapy, and continuing to support the swim team, Gwyn has no time to be crushing on anyone. Not to mention said hot soccer player is part of a rival friend group and he doesn't seem remotely interested in Gwyn at all. What's a girl to do.

Thanks so much for being here! This is my first ever fic for ACOTAR and I'm super excited to be participating in fandom for once. A bit of set-up with this first chapter but this might end up being a bit of a slow burn.

"Take your mark."

Gwyneth Berdara exhaled the breath in her lungs. Her body bent over the podium, her feet tensed, ready to propel her forward.

Bzzzzt!

She inhaled as she pushed off.

Gwyn barely felt the water as it enveloped her, her form knifing through. She broke the surface, taking a deep but quick breath before submerging her head once again. It was only a few seconds before she saw the approaching wall. She tucked her chin towards her chest, her feet sailing over head before coming into contact with the concrete wall of the pool.

And then she was flying again.

At least that's what it felt like when Gwyn swam; like she was soaring, completely unencumbered by gravity as she flew through the water; like she was weightless.

But, Gwyn was competing right now, and as much as she loved taking her time and gliding through the water, she also loved winning. Her head broke the surface again, her arms reaching forward to pull her towards victory. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted splashing to her left, the swimmer from Adriata University must be only milliseconds behind her.

Gwyn tucked again, turning in the water, and pushed as hard as she could to propel herself for another lap, her arms and legs beginning to burn with the effort. It was a good burn, the kind of burn that told Gwyn she was pushing her body to its very limits, reaching beyond what she should be capable of, pushing herself towards a win.

"Come on Gwynnie, try to catch me," whispered a familiar voice in her head, and so Gwyn pushed on and pushed harder.

There were two laps left and she could feel her body begging her to stop, to rest, but she plowed through every mental block, focused only on how she could eek every last bit of speed and strength out of her muscles.

Then the pain hit.

It was a sudden and shooting pain that went screaming through her left shoulder as she tried to bring it over her head. Her arm hit the water with a dull thud, as though it had been sapped of all its strength.

The swimmer from Adriata in the lane next to her moved ahead, so Gwyn pushed on. She threw as much power as she could muster into every single stroke of her right arm and tried to get her left arm to cooperate as much as possible, but every little movement sent a new wave of pain coursing through her shoulder.

With each passing moment, she felt the other swimmers pass her as her momentum slowed to a crawl. Finally, what felt like a lifetime later, her right hand touched the concrete of the pool wall and the race was over.

Gwyn didn't even want to turn and look at the scoreboard or acknowledge the comically large number that no doubt followed her name. Her arm was hot and aching but the agony was being overtaken by an anger that was slowly consuming her. She wanted to scream and cry. She wanted to hit something; the water perhaps or one of the swimmers in the adjacent lanes.

Instead, she swallowed hard, bit back the emotions threatening to boil over, and turned to face the results. Just as she suspected, the scoreboard indicated a horrifically large number in bright red letters next to her name. It wasn't quite as bad as she thought, even with her injured arm she somehow managed fifth place, not podium-worthy but at least she wasn't dead last. The swimmer from Adriata had overtaken her and gotten first. In the name of good sportsmanship, Gwyn turned to the swimmer now beaming with pride. She swam up to their lane dividers and shook hands. She did the same with the swimmer to her right who had taken second.

She heard hurried footsteps approaching the edge of the pool and looked up to see the concerned faces of Velaris Valkyries Swim Team captain and co-captain; Nesta Archeron and Emerie Windhaven.

Gwyn's check-in with the medic at the meet did not go as she had hoped, but the way her shoulder screamed at her every time she moved hadn't given her much to hope for in the first place. When Nesta had finished placing their order, she walked over to the couch and crouched in front of Gwyn, bringing them eye level with each other.

The situation wasn't ideal, (ideally, Gwyn wouldn't have fucked up her shoulder in the first place) but compared to the doom and gloom scenarios her brain had been running through the past few days, this prognosis was manageable.

The appointment ended with the doctor running through a list of things Gwyn couldn't do so she didn't injure her shoulder further, a few things she should do to help with the healing, and a prescription for meds to help keep swelling and pain down. Finally, there was the business card for the school's physical therapist and the caveat that she should contact them and make an appointment as soon as possible.

When Gwyn walked out of the appointment, she by no means felt light or happy, but her brain felt quiet. And that was more than enough for her.

She would browse the book selections, trying to find something she hadn't read yet, or she'd use the computer behind the counter to work on homework, usually for Professor Merrill's class. Today, all Gwyn could think about was getting to work on healing her shoulder. That wasn't something she could actively do until her first physical therapy appointment tomorrow, which she'd set up the second she left the doctor's office.
