On June 6th, the @criterioncollection is releasing a 4K uhd-blu-ray upgrade of the all time classic Rules of the Game - with an first time new cover (see above):
The Rules of the Game
Considered one of the greatest films ever made, Jean Renoir’s The Rules of the Game is a scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners in which a weekend at a marquis’s country château lays bare some ugly truths about a group of haut bourgeois acquaintances. The film has had a tumultuous history: it was subjected to cuts after the violent response of the audience at its 1939 premiere, and the original negative was destroyed during World War II; it wasn’t reconstructed until 1959. That version, which has stunned viewers for decades, is presented here.
4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES
New 4K restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
One 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray of the film with special features
Introduction to the film by director Jean Renoir
Audio commentary written by film scholar Alexander Sesonske and read by filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich
Comparison of the film’s two endings

Re: American Duchess frustration — Oak Tree Farms has some cute dainty style boots — the brand is more in the vein of historically inspired, rather than historical reproduction, but I got their Jasmine boots and really like them, even though the heels are a bit high for everyday wear. The prices are suspiciously low right now though, so I’m a little worried they’re going out of business or discontinuing and redesigning.
They're pretty! But the problem is, I'm after something specific. Here are the boots I lost:
Tumblr media
American Duchess Balmorals, now discontinued
they had this wonderful cotton sateen upper that clung to the foot in a way that made it really supportive. They had an oval toe that wasn't too far extended past the foot, or too pointed, or too square. They had a sole that didn't stick out around the sides of the boot, which made it look very graceful. They had a low French heel. They were EVERYTHING I wanted in a Victorian boot
and they were among the only shoes in this style that AD did. I think the Renoirs may be similar, but in leather and you have to move the buttons to make them fit as perfectly as the Balmorals did just by lacing them up. the Floras definitely are, but I already have a pair and you have to take great care with them not to get the embroidery stained. I may break and buy some Renoirs at some point just to get even close to the shape in a more practical material
it's a more mid-19th century boot style and nobody else seems to do it
Tumblr media
(early 1870s boots, FIDM. Yes, these are the ones they copied for Crimson Peak)
Tumblr media
(late 1860s boots, private American Duchess research collection)
Tumblr media
(also probably 1860s-70s)
my KINGDOM for someone else to do more of this style so I can have them!

Some Garbo propaganda because she was thoroughly fascinating. She was a rare actor of her time that avoided the press, she had an amazing art collection including works by Renoir, she was among the first actresses with Marlene and Katharine to wear pants and other masculine clothes, she was definitely bisexual and some theorize she may have actually been a lesbian, her first sound film was such a big event it was marketed with "Garbo talks!" and her first spoken line "give me a whiskey, ginger ale on the side, and don't be stingy baby" became iconic, many of our favorites from Gregory Peck to Dolores del Rio and Bette Davis loved her, she lived in a beautiful NY apartment for the rest of her life post retirement and became known for window shopping and long walks that sparked a Garbo sighting fad where locals would go out of their way just to see her though she was so private that she must have found that all very strange.
