From the piece:
An illegal Chinese biolab unearthed in California roused concerns last week when local officials and contractors reported finding pathogens labeled "HIV" and "Ebola" during a CDC-ordered waste eradication at the site. Now federal agencies face criticism that they "dropped the ball" on investigating how pervasive the threat could be nationwide. "It reads like a movie script and a horror movie script, when you detail all of those things that were missed," Rep. Ashley Hinson, a Republican from Iowa, said Sunday on "FOX & Friends Weekend." Jia Bei Zhu, 62, who was behind the lab, was reportedly a Chinese citizen and a wanted fugitive from Canada.
Also from the piece:
"They had over a thousand mice that were designed to transmit COVID. So this administration needs to hold China accountable for its role in spreading COVID around the world, and it's very clear of their intention here, which was to do more damage to our country," she said.

"Congressional salaries are $174,000. That pay has not increased since 2009; in real dollars, salaries are the lowest they’ve been since 1955. Our health insurance is purchased on the Affordable Care Act exchange. We pay 30% of the premium; the House of Representatives pays 70%, similar to most workplace insurance plans. ... Mandatory pensions take up 4.4% of the salary.... two residences are required; votes keep House members in Washington, D.C., about a hundred days each year. No housing allowance or per diem is paid, and no tax deduction for business housing is permitted. ...
Juxtapose these facts against the misconception that people become rich by serving in Congress. ... Congress is full of multimillionaires for the same reason that the NBA is full of tall people. It’s easier to get recruited and win with such advantages. Serving in Congress does not pad your bank account any more than playing basketball adds inches to your height. While we might accept physical attributes in athletes as natural or desirable, wealth does not give a better perspective for politics. It undercuts the purpose of representative democracy.
Americans rightfully fume that congressmembers trade stocks, convinced that insider information is misused, but we refuse to squarely address the harm that comes from representatives having such wealth in the first place. From 2019 to 2022, over 130 members of the House of Representatives each traded over $100,000 of stock. To trade that dollar volume in a year, these folks are either addicted day traders who cannot manage their money (much less our economy), or—and this is the reality—they own stocks worth many multiples of what they traded.
Representatives who are my peers in age and years of political service—like Cindy Axne, Mike Garcia, Ashley Hinson, Ro Khanna, Tom Malinowski, Blake Moore, Kim Schrier, and Mikie Sherrill—have each traded over $1 million while in office. In my life before Congress, I knew that people with net worths in the tens of millions were not my peers. Pretending they are in Congress is an indignity."

Ashely Hinson and rest of Iowa's GOP rep's slammed for weeks-long vacation
U.S. CapitolWASHINGTON, D.C. – Iowa’s Trump-loving “MAGA” Republican Representatives were slammed after agreeing to take a very long vacation as America’s border is overrun, the government is on the brink of shutdown, and allies in Europe face a growing Russian threat. Farmers and Ranchers Rally Against the Marshall-Hinson EATS Act in Washington, D.C.
Farmers and ranchers from various agricultural organizations, including the Organization for Competitive Markets (OCM) and Competitive Markets Action (CMA), gathered in Washington, D.C., to voice their strong opposition to the Ending Agriculture Trade Suppression (EATS) Act, H.R. 4417/S. 2019. Led by Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, and Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kansas, the EATS Act has been criticized…

Confronting China and protecting American industries from China’s globalist ambitions involved opposing legislation that strengthens China’s grip on our economic interests. This is why I’m raising a red flag on the risks associated with the so-called Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act, H.R. 4417/S. 2019, led by Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) and Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS).
Due to the opposition they’ve already faced since its introduction, they must know their proposal is grotesquely offensive to American farmers, states’ rights advocates, and experts on the China threat. In short, EATS would ban states from setting agricultural procurement policies that support their farmers and communities and clean the slate of existing state laws, enabling foreign companies to more rapidly acquire American agriculture assets.
There is still the risk, however, that a carveout for the pork industry could be snuck into the Farm Bill in order to help the “largest pork producers.” However, the largest pork producer in the U.S. is Smithfield, a Chinese-owned corporation operating on American soil. China’s CCP regularly interferes in Chinese corporations, thanks to the country’s fusion of the civilian, military, and political sectors, as seen with ByteDance and TikTok. Smithfield is 100% owned by a Chinese corporation, something that has worried lawmakers due to CCP influence.
If Congress passes any version of the EATS Act in the Farm Bill later this year, Rep. Hinson and Sen. Marshall will – whether they realize it or not – create a massive advantage for China’s goal of controlling more American agriculture at the expense of American family farmers and ranchers. Doing this will create a regulatory void that exposes American farmers and ranchers to the unchecked expansion of foreign corporations, particularly those from China or Chinese-owned. The misguided effort represents a dangerous erosion of American sovereignty and economic independence.
By being given a free pass to bypass state laws, China will further dominate the pork sector, compromising our food production systems, supply chains, and even our national security

Hinson lies during debate… shocker! – Daily High Five
DEBATE RECAP: Last night was the first debate for the candidates in Iowa’s second congressional district. Rep. Ashley Hinson failed to defend her horrible record, such as voting for abortion restrictions without exceptions, taking credit for the infrastructure bill that she voted against and voting to allow big oil and big pharma to continue their price gouging, and even voting against a $35 cap…

PolitiFact - The facts about Iowa’s 2nd District congressional candidates and abortion
PolitiFact – The facts about Iowa’s 2nd District congressional candidates and abortion
Those who have followed the near 50-year aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade, a 1973 ruling that legalized abortion in the United States, know the ruling never settled the highly contentious topic of legal abortion. Iowa’s newly drawn 2nd District congressional race has been particularly contentious with candidates U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson, the Republican incumbent, and…

The House on Thursday passed a bill to protect a person's ability to access contraceptives in a 228-195 vote.
The Big Picture: Lawmakers have been introducing legislation in response to Justice Clarence Thomas' concurring opinion overturning Roe v. Wade saying that the court should reconsider "all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents," including those guaranteeing birth control access and marriage equality.
• This week, the House passed a bill to enshrine marriage equality into federal law with a wide bipartisan margin.
• Eight Republicans joined Democrats in supporting the bill. They are Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), Fred Upton (R-Mich.), John Katko (R-N.Y.), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), Maria Salazar (R-Fla.), Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio). Two Republicans voted "present."
Details: The bill, known as the Right to Contraception Act and introduced by Rep. Kathy Manning (D-N.C.), is focused on guaranteeing access to birth control measures and protecting health care providers' ability to provide them.
Between The Lines: As more states continue to ban abortion starting at fertilization, it is possible that these could be interpreted to limit access to birth control, since certain forms of birth control, such as intrauterine devices, prevent implantation in the uterus but not fertilization.
• Additionally, medical experts worry that states making abortion illegal could also potentially move to ban contraceptives.
A Republican House lawmaker, Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa), introduced legislation that would let people over the age of 18 access to birth control pills over-the-counter that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
• The FDA is currently considering whether to approve over-the-counter contraceptive pills from HRA Pharma.

Here are the US representatives who voted against the US pro-LGBT+ Equality Act
Tumblr media
The US Equality Act is to outlaw discrimination against LGBTQ people in housing, credit, jury service, public accommodations, and federal funding.
The House of Representatives passed the legislation yesterday, but it is unlikely that the Senate will follow up, given the Republican Party's increasing hostility to queer people. They are currently weaponizing transphobia in an attempt at mobilizing their base.
In the Senate the bill will require at least 10 Republicans to vote with all Democrats to advance past the so-called filibuster.
Metro Weekly has listed the representatives that voted against the law in the House.
