After discovering an abandoned World War II bunker while on a hike in northern Norway, Henrik Lande Andersen spent two years transforming this former German WW2 lookout into an overnight refuge open to all.

Over the course of two years, Henrik made the hike from town - the only way to access the site - carrying pieces of salvaged construction material to build a roof, door, windows, beds, table, and kitchen cabinets.

During World War II, northern Norway was a strategic outpost (as a transport route for Swedish iron ore), and the German Army built hundreds of bunkers here. Henrik’s bunker—that he’s dubbed Utsikten, or “The View”—was likely built by Ukrainian prisoners of war. The rocky mountain face was first blasted with dynamite and then filled in with concrete and rock.

Using materials found in the trash, Henrik estimates he spent the equivalent of about $500 to create the shelter (used entirely on roofing materials; he even found expensive tools in the trash). He even enlisted six friends to carry a heavy iron stove up the mountain on planks.

Today anyone who finds the path from town hike up to the site and spend the night. The sign on the door reads “ no key, feel free,” and hundreds of people have slept in the space since Henrik finished it.

The place isn’t sanctioned by a local government, but in Norway, there’s a right to roam - Allemannsrett - that allows anyone to camp anywhere, as long as it's not encroaching on someone's home or privacy and doesn’t cause any damage.

Henrik was 18 when he moved up here from Oslo attracted by the rugged nature. He made a film about his two-year experience building, and at times living in, this historic refuge. “What I wanted with the project was to turn the place on its head, what it was historically. It was about war and abuse of power and I wanted to turn it to the opposite, like a sanctuary, a place where everyone is welcome and to transform the history to something new.”

spent the past two days embroidering my jeans that i was kinda tired of! it was soo nice i haven't taken the time to personalize or alter my clothing in a while and it just makes me enjoy wearing it so much more. this is a thing that i did! no one else did this these are my strawberries that i embroidered! yayayay.

I dreamt I saw an old farmhouse with a glass roof, a brilliant idea, to convert old buildings that are unsuitable for living in but are still structurallly strong enough, to turn them into greenhouses!

So I’ve been in the shop getting some stuff done… made a serving tray for a friend who fell and broke his pelvis… made a replica surfboard from reclaimed wood for a buddy that runs a surf shop… refinished a cutting/charcuterie board for my sweetheart…

I'm a renter so investing in garden infrastructure is a balance and a compromise.

Mine is a garden of poverty. Found objects, repurposed items, cheap tip finds, composting, creativity and elbow grease is what my various vegie gardens run on.

Everything you see here I got for free. Wood lengths and a wire trellis from a curbside rubbish pile and bricks that were onsite when I moved in. This is all packed together between the legs of a garden arch which I bought cheap several years ago.

Today I refreshed the soil with 50% home sourced ingredients. Pea seeds saved from last season will go in soon. This DIY box will be feeding me again shortly.

This is how I spent my Earth Day. I hope your Earth Day was equally rewarding.

if you wanna learn how to reduce your waste and save money go on ig reels, tiktok, or youtube right now and look up “up cycling tutorials” I’ve already learned how to repurpose old candle jars, food jars, plastic grocery bags, bread bag ties, paper towel rolls, cardboard boxes from amazon, and more just go look it up rn you can’t convince me you can’t repurpose literally ANYTHING. don’t buy new, figure out how to use things you already have!!!! if we all adopted these practices it would cause a major reduction in landfill waste!
