Fashion is an instrument through which you show you belong to a group.
- John Weitz
John Weitz was a man for all seasons. Handsome, intelligent, and debonair. He was a novelist, historian, businessman, spy, and above all a renowned mens and ladies fashion designer. James Bond was fiction but he was the real deal.
Born in Berlin in 1923, Hans Werner Weitz was the son of a prosperous clothing manufacturer and German first world war hero, who had won the Iron Cross in the infantry. The family was living well when Christopher Isherwood visited. But they were Jewish, quick to understand what was about to happen, and, in the early 1930s, moved to London, where the young Weitz went to well known private school, St Paul's in London. At St Paul’s he said it was normal to be caned if he didn’t wear morning clothes to class, so he always did with lapels rolled properly. “On weekends we wore blazers…correctly…with the collar up and with a scarf and with brown suede shoes, which were very new then….but never, of course, after six,” he once reminisced.
He was an apt pupil and Oxbridge seemed to be a seamless next stage. However he lasted only a year studying at Oxford University.
Instead he headed off to Paris to begin an apprenticeship with the women's tailor, Captain Edward Molyneaux. In 1938, at the age of 18, Weitz was falsely arrested as an enemy agent while working in the London office of the Paris fashion house Molyneux.
His father was already in America and in 1939, and when France was overuun at the outbreak of the war, Weitz could see he had to get out of Europe. After a tortuous trip through Shanghai, China and later Yokohama, Japan to reach the USA.
Tumblr media
In 1943 and now a naturalised American citizen and aged 21, John (as he was now dubbed) was recruited by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the CIA, operating in Germany until 1946. He was fluent in both French and German which came in handy in his work during the war in Europe.
He would only ever describe his work in Germany until 1946 as "sensitive," though, much later, his publisher John Fairchild told the New York Times that Weitz "loved all that romantic part of his past. He was a perfect gentleman."  What is known about his OSS work was that he was part of a 1944 mission in support of the plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler  formulated by German Wehrmacht officers, under the instigation of Claus von Stauffenberg. After the war, Weitz helped to liberate the Dachau concentration camp
Weitz was also a man with connections, as when he confirmed that a former OSS boss had shown him gangster blackmail photos of the longtime FBI director J Edgar Hoover with his boyfriend, Clyde Tolson. In the 1970s, Weitz's friend Albert "Cubby" Broccoli, producer of the James Bond movies, teased him about his resemblance to the character - adding that Weitz was better looking.
Tumblr media
Weitz returned to New York in the 1940s, a young garment trader well placed to pick up on American women's new taste for informal sportswear, leather coats and men's shirts.
Weitz founded his women’s sportswear business, John Weitz Designs, in 1954, and launched men’s wear a decade later. For his women’s wear, he often tailored the best of men’s designs for the female figure, with looks such as shaped houndstooth checked coats, formal shirts with jet buttons and cuff links, and corduroy pants.
“Whatever happens in women’s pants comes from the men’s pants,” he said in 1965.
Tumblr media
In the Sixties, Weitz began phasing out his women’s and children’s apparel business to concentrate on men’s wear. By 1977, Weitz had 18 licensees and $150 million worldwide retail sales of products bearing his label, including sunglasses, belts, umbrellas and even cigars. That year, he also reentered the licensed women’s apparel category, because, he said, he saw the need for an alternative to coordinated sportswear merchandising.
“I’m rather sick of seeing American working women treated as children with prepackaged clothes,” Weitz said at the time.
Tumblr media
In 1964, he launched his menswear range, applying the technical standards of manufacture he had learned from his father. Unusually, in that era of obsolescence, he went for ease and wear - clothes, he said, should be worn "as if they are old and valued friends".
Of course he committed fashion faux pas here and there. This was the 1970s after all. But the previaling zeitgeist had to be understood before we laugh or wince at the designs today. None left a lasting impression quite as strong as the posthumously awarded ‘king of the ‘70s’—the leisure suit.
Once hailed by top designers John Weitz and Calvin Klein as a garment with staying power, the leisure suit was ostracized from the kingdom of en vogue before the 1970s ever came to an end. Just as it had swiftly risen to the top of fashion, it fell into the leagues of comic relief twice as fast.  Today we laugh at the cheesy styles, feminine colors, and garish plaids. But what we seem to have forgotten is that the leisure suit did more than just provide us with years of laughs. The leisure suit helped men open themselves up to new ideas in clothing. It allowed them to experiment outside of the style box they’d been locked in for too many years. If the 1970s had passed without the leisure suit, “business casual” for men might never have developed as soon as it did. The leisure suit may have been a fashion catastrophe, but it laid the groundwork for men to strut their fashion stuff for decades to come.
Tumblr media
He was his own dream model - "healthy and scrubbed," with a flat stomach - and toured stores showing off his new line of narrow, European-cut shirts, half the width of the standard American style. His navy suit, alphabet-patterned ties and aubergine socks are commonplace now, but were then part of a new, executive self-presentation, more about putting it together than design. By 1974, he had become a household name, with annual earnings of $18m and a Coty Award, fashion's prize for innovation.
Weitz skilfully let his name generate money by itself, using witty advertisements to maintain a high public profile. A poster on the back of New York buses announced, for example, "She ditched him, John Weitz ties and all".
Tumblr media
He also used his writing abilities to promote the business image: his book Man In Charge, The Executive's Guide To Grooming, Manners And Travel (1974), became a bestseller, but was really just part of his trade in suavity and martinis. Even his headquarters was above Madison Avenue. There were also two well received novels, Friends In High Places and The Value Of Nothing.
Two other books, however, marked out Weitz as a historian of the Nazi period. He wrote Hitler's Diplomat, a biography of the third reich foreign minister, Joachim von Ribbentrop, and Hitler's Banker, about the president of the Reichsbank, Hjalmar Horace Greeley Schacht.
He was repeatedly asked about reconciling the sale of navy blazers and researching von Ribbentrop, but he saw no clash: "Who else but a fashion designer would understand such a worldly man?" Weitz certainly comprehended the Nazis genius for the projection of personal image, and, though never a major historian, established a sufficiently solid reputation as a researcher that the president of Germany consulted him on the subject.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, he lived the life of his executive book, raced cars at Sebring in the 1950s, and belonged to the New York Yacht Club and the Vintage Sports Car Club. In his Park Avenue apartment, a Chinese chef cooked dinner parties for his friends - among them the novelist Tom Wolfe- and film people.
In 1964, he married the actor Susan Kohner, and their two sons, Christopher and Paul, remembered Ingmar Bergman taking them to the circus, and film directors John Huston and Billy Wilder dropping in for coffee -"just nice old men around the house every once in a while". The boys' chief complaint about their father was that he made them wear blue blazers. Both Chris and Paul would go on to forge their own Hollywood careers as the producers and directors of such movies as American Pie (1999) and About a Boy (2002).
John Weitz had a deep fondness for cats which raised eyebrows amongst his more masculine following. But Weitz was unrepentent. Weitz adored their elegance, and was quoted on them more often than on the Nazis. "Even overweight cats instinctively know the rule: when fat, arrange yourself in slim poses," he wrote.
Tumblr media
John Weitz died on 3 October 2002 at the grand old age of 79. He remained a dashing figure and aged well - like the American version of Gianni Agnelli. He had throughout his life the air of adventure, even danger. He was stylish fashion designer who lived up to the executive image of his clothes. It’s no wonder no one balked when he made a name for himself with the nowadays unthinkable ad slogan, “John Weitz designs for the woman who wishes her husband could afford her.” His was a life well lived.

Accuphase Joins HFL's Portfolio!
Hi All,
So the next news we have in readiness for the lifting of retail Lockdown is that we are really proud to add Accuphase to our portfolio of brands and products, for those you don’t know Accuphase is considered Japan’s High end HiFi offering to the world.
I must admit that when I was first shown one of the integrated amps by my rep a few months ago I was tottally smitten by the looks even before it had made a single note , I mean what is not to love about the VU Meters and their very retro look but once you start using their products you realise they just ooze class, they are so beautifully made and extremely well engineered, every button and knob is a joy to operate, when you are next in please feel free to have a twiddle, Accuphase really are up there with the best when it comes to understanding that everything matters, I’m actually not using the remote so that I have the joy of using the manual volume knob, anyway enough of my perversions, oh yes and they only come in Champagne Gold, which I know may not be for everyone but it they certainly make a statement and actually look really classy in the flesh.
But obviously it is the sound that matters and needless to say they don’t disappoint here, for a company that is approaching it’s 50th anniversary I think it’s fair to say they know what they are doing by now, I first heard the 30 watt Pure Class A E-650 Integrated and we used it to drive the Magneplanar 20.7’s which are a very difficult speaker to get the best from but it really did make them sing, in all honesty I have never heard them sound better, I think it is fair to say with the limited listening I have had so far that the Accuphase house sound is honest but slightly on the warmer and full bodied side, very much a Class A sound but even their non Class A amps still carry that sound so they have all the detail but they are not bright or forward, just very natural and musical.
Accuphase Laboratory, Inc. is a Japanese, Yokohama-based high-end audio equipment manufacturer founded by former Kenwood engineer Jiro Kasuga in late 1972 who was unhappy with the direction Kenwood where going in so he took engineers from Marantz and Luxman and formed Accuphase. The name ACCUPHASE was adapted by taking the prefix ACCU from the word “accurate”, and combining it with PHASE which is a most important factor in audio technology. Accuphase are well known for producing extremely high quality products so if you are looking for a new amp and are taken by the looks of Accuphase then feel free to come into HFL to give them a listen as I’m pretty sure you’ll be very impressed as I was.
At the moment we have the new E-380 Integrated on demo which is to be followed very shortly by the new monster E-800 50 Watt Pure Class Amp, really can’t wait to get my hands on this, all their integrateds and Preamps can be fitted with either a digital DAC board as well as a Phono Board so they really can be a very neat solution for people who don’t want loads of boxes.
Please find the full range below, unfortunately Accuphase won’t let us publish prices so please do get in touch for more info, as an example the E-380 we have on demo is £6800 and the E-800 will be £15,000, if anything else in the range takes your fancy please also get in touch as we have access to the full range for demo that we can borrow at any time.

Cheers,
Paul.

Global Uncertainty: The Economic Fallout From Coronavirus
A Classic 'Black Swan'?
— Knowledge@Wharton, the online research and business analysis journal of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania | The Economic Forum | February 28, 2020
Tumblr media
Coronavirus is already impacting global markets, with economic impacts felt beyond China and other effected countries.
There's a lot still to learn about the virus - and therefore how extensive its impact on the global economy could become.
On Monday, February 24, stock indices tumbled, spooked by reports that the coronavirus outbreak that emerged in China is spreading to countries including Italy, Iran and South Korea. A day later, trading in stocks across world markets remained choppy, reflecting hope that the economic fallout might be manageable — just as damage from the SARS epidemic was some two decades ago — but also fear that the economic impact could be significant and linger longer.
The markets’ movements mirror the uncertainty that prevails and persists not just in the U.S. but all over the world. Several weeks into the coronavirus outbreak that has brought the world’s second-largest economy to its knees, some of the most basic aspects of the virus remain unknown. It’s not yet clear how widely beyond China COVID-19 will spread; this week, numbers of infected individuals have surged outside China. Still, exactly how it is transmitted, how easily, and how lethal it might be are aspects of this coronavirus that remain to be uncovered, according to University of Pennsylvania scientists.
As the human toll mounts, so does the economic damage. The business realm, of course, tends to shudder in the face of uncertainty, and right now, with reports on the seriousness of the coronavirus evolving each day if not each hour, the eyes of commerce are on epidemiology.
“This has many economic implications,” says Wharton management professor Mauro Guillen. “It has implications not just for China but for the entire world. The world depends on Chinese growth,” he says, citing both the country’s supply-chain role and consumer buying power. Still, he notes: “It is unclear how much impact in the end this is going to have.” But what is clear is that if politics and trade wars emerged as uncertainties in recent years, now a third leg in the stool holding up global confidence has suddenly gone wobbly. Some observers describe it as a classic “black swan” — a random event that is completely unpredictable. (An interview with Nassim Taleb, author of the book from which the expression is derived, can be heard here.)
Tumblr media
A police officer wearing a protective face mask, following an outbreak of the coronavirus, stands with his bike in front of a screen showing the Nikkei index outside a brokerage in Tokyo, Japan February 26, 2020.
“The long-term repercussion quite apart from whatever happens now is that we’ve got a source of risk we hadn’t thought about,” says Marshall W. Meyer, a Wharton management professor emeritus who consults in China. “My view is there is going to be a big adjustment of global trade patterns unless we are really lucky and [the virus] goes away very quickly. This became apparent after SARS, but SARS went away. And this may or may not go away. The real problem is people’s confidence, and in China how much political damage there will be and whether it will be contained. And there is no way to know.”
An Economic Earthquake
The damage has already been severe and has reached into a surprising array of sectors. As noted above, this week the markets responded negatively to the sharp uptick in cases outside of China, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling more than 1,000 points on Monday — its third-biggest one-day decline. (The selloff continued on Tuesday as the Dow fell another 879 points.) Major American orchestras have canceled tours in China. The cruise industry has seen the public-relations nightmare of more than 1,200 passengers quarantined aboard the Diamond Princess in Yokohama. With moneyed Chinese travelers forced to stay home, European tourism has taken a hit. “It’s seen as on par with an earthquake, a situation of emergency,” Mattia Morandi, spokesman for Italy’s ministry of culture and tourism, told The New York Times.
Supply chains in the retail sector and others have been disrupted, factories in China have gone quiet, and passenger air travel has been curtailed. Apple recently announced that it now expects to miss its next quarterly revenue forecast as a result of shuttered factories and closed retail shops in China.
“This is going to be a slow-rolling, highly consequential event,” says Meyer. “I would say stock up on aspirin and Ibuprofen now, because the base ingredients come from China. Antibiotics come from China. Hong Kong wholly depends on China for its food supply, for its water.”
Economic disruption related to the coronavirus is expected to rob the world economy of growth for the first time since 2009, according to London-based research firm Capital Economics. “We assume the virus will be contained soon, and that lost output is made up in subsequent quarters, so that world GDP reaches the level it would have done had there been no outbreak by the middle of 2021,” the firm said in a statement.
What’s the potential outcome if the virus isn’t contained? According to a report by CNBC, Moody’s chief economist Mark Zandi noted on Tuesday that if the virus becomes a pandemic in Europe and the U.S., “that is the prescription for a global and U.S. recession.” Meanwhile, Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell suggested that there will “very likely be some effects on [the economy of] the United States” from the current outbreak, but, in recent testimony before the House Financial Services Committee, said it’s too early to say how much.
The philanthropic sector is beginning to divert resources to the crisis. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed up to $100 million toward efforts to help strengthen detection, isolation and treatment efforts, to protect at-risk populations, and to develop vaccines, treatments and diagnostics. Hong Kong investor and philanthropist Li Ka Shing has donated $13 million to assist Wuhan, where the outbreak has been concentrated. Alibaba founder Jack Ma has committed $14.4 million, including $5.8 million to fund research into a vaccine.
‘Still Learning’
Of course, how much philanthropy eventually gets moved to combating COVID-19 depends on the eventual scale of the epidemic, and at any given point, no one has been able to say whether it has peaked.
But so far, this new coronavirus appears to be less lethal than SARS, says Susan R. Weiss, a faculty member in the department of microbiology at Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine. Its sudden, dramatic appearance may have been a function of some special circumstances.
“It started in Wuhan, a really dense city at the crossroads of many different means of transportation, and this happened at New Year’s, when a lot of people were traveling, so this was a perfect storm,” says Weiss. “SARS started in the Guangdong Province, which is much less dense and was more easily controlled.”
On the other hand, she says, SARS spiked up over about eight months, and then disappeared, and it’s not yet known whether COVID-19 will behave the same way. “We don’t know whether it will burn out, like SARS, or come back seasonally like the flu,” she said.
This is going to be a slow-rolling, highly consequential event.
— Marshall W. Meyer
What is known at this point is the coronavirus’s nucleic acid sequence, “and that gives scientists a lot of information,” says Penn professor of medicine and infectious disease specialist Harvey Rubin. This helps in developing diagnostic tests and informs the approach to coming up with a vaccine. “What that doesn’t tell you is how transmissible it is. It doesn’t tell you whether the disease can be spread when it’s asymptomatic. We don’t yet know how transmissible it is person to person,” he says. “Right now, 99% of cases are still in China, but a small but important number are out of China, so the trajectory of this problem is still a time-dependent process…. We are still learning, and numbers are still coming in.”
Trade, Disease and the Moral High Ground
Experts have been vocal about what China has done wrong, debating whether the country recognized the epidemic soon enough and if the government’s ideological aversion to transparency delayed action and cost lives.
But what about the U.S. reaction? Is there something the U.S. can and should be doing beyond the $100 million that the U.S. government says it is prepared to spend to help China and other countries where the epidemic has spread?
“It’s already daunting for China to be coping with this, but we have a trade war going on, and it would actually be in the best interest of the U.S. to stop the trade war,” says Guillen. “It would create a lot of goodwill and would give us a good relationship as opposed to a confrontational one.”
In the meantime, he says: negotiate. “The U.S. can seek an agreement, but from a high moral ground — as in, ‘we know you are in trouble, let’s see what we can do about it.’ And if they don’t want to do what the Trump administration wants to do, the U.S. can re-impose tariffs.”
Getting to a trade solution now is also a recognition that our fates are intertwined. After the big 2011 tsunami in Japan, Guillen points out, “within weeks, many factories in the U.S. had to stop producing because they were getting components outsourced from Japan. This is a global economy. We have businesses and operations and connections with China, and if the second largest economy in the world is brought to a halt, it has the potential to disrupt things all over the world.”
Will the coronavirus crisis cause companies to look at China differently in the future?
“They are very likely to do so,” says Howard Kunreuther, co-director of Wharton’s Risk Management and Decision Processes Center and professor emeritus in the operations, information and decisions department. In research with Wharton professor Michael Useem for their recent book Mastering Catastrophic Risk: How Companies Cope with Disruption, the authors contacted chief risk officers and leading executives at more than 100 S&P 500 firms on the most adverse risks they had faced in recent years.
If there is some message here, it’s that this is totally predictable.
—Harvey Rubin
“Every one of them said we are now paying much closer attention to the potential consequences of catastrophic risks than in previous years because they are happening more frequently: the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the 2008-2009 financial crisis, the 2011 Japan trifecta (earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident) and more intense natural disasters. Firms are now engaging in enterprise risk management to reduce the likelihood and consequences of future adverse events that will affect their operations and are asking questions, such as how safe is it for us to operate here?”
Part of the rationale for these firms considering taking steps now is the high visibility of the coronavirus. “I don’t think they would be paying attention if it weren’t in the news every day,” says Kunreuther. Still, that doesn’t mean businesses should not consider taking action now given the potential for a pandemic. “The question is, what will they do? Will they undertake an assessment of the risk and ask what kind of risk-management strategies they can follow by examining the potential costs and benefits of undertaking these steps?”
“Many of us have been saying for years that it’s only a matter of time,” says Rubin, referring to the arrival of a serious epidemic or pandemic. “If we are lucky and this starts to abate and the mortality is relatively low, it’s unfortunate for the people who are sick and died, but next year or the year after something else could happen. The world needs to have not only medicine and healthcare infrastructure but also economic and information infrastructure. If there is some message here, it’s that this is totally predictable.”
A lot of attention gets paid to infectious disease outbreaks in the moment, and there is a lot of talk about vulnerabilities, preparedness and response.
“We talked about it after Zika, Ebola, during the measles outbreak, and then nobody talked about it anymore,” says Rubin. “For some reason this captures attention while it’s there, but then it goes away. People forget.”

Ascott Opens First Citadines in Osaka, Japan
Tumblr media
Ascott has expanded its already considerable portfolio of serviced apartments in Japan, with the opening of its first Citadines serviced residence in Osaka. Ascott is operating the property through a master lease agreement with Toshin Development Company Ltd, a subsidiary of the Takashimaya Group. Located near the Namba Station, Citadines Namba Osaka is in a vibrant financial, retail, and recreational hub within close proximity to tourist hotspots. Guests can easily visit nearby attractions such as the Dotonbori, Kuromon Market, Osaka Castle, Universal Studios Japan and Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan. Mr Tan Lai Seng, Ascott’s Regional Manager for Japan & Korea, said, “With Japan’s thriving economy and inbound travel market, we see great opportunities to expand in the country where we have a strong portfolio of over 5,000 units across more than 30 serviced residences, hotels and rental housing properties in nine cities. Our properties have been performing well at an occupancy rate of 80% to 90%. Upcoming major events such as the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, and Osaka-Kansai World Expo are expected to boost demand for our lodging properties, including Citadines Namba Osaka.”
Tumblr media
Citadines Namba Osaka signifies a successful transformation from a department store into a serviced residence. It is part of the Takashimaya Higashi Annex, an integrated development which also comprises offices, shops and Takashimaya Historical Museum. Paying homage to the heritage building’s roots as a department store, Citadines Namba Osaka has taken on a modern Art Deco design that evokes nostalgic memories of a department store of the past, with concepts of fashion and shopping being weaved into different parts of the property, furniture pieces, signages and artwork. The old-world charm of the marbled column lobby is accentuated by intricate details such as acanthus motifs, ornate carvings, decorative travel trunks and elevators with dial indicators retaining the original design used in the building years ago. In collaboration with Takashimaya Osaka Department Store, cosmetics, fashion accessories, handbags and shoes in showcases are displayed at the reception  area. Along with a carousel-themed children’s playroom and an industrial-themed restaurant with a vintage car, they all add to the quaint and playful vibes of the design. The Citadines serviced residence offers 313 units with varied apartment types to cater to guests on short and long stays. Guests can make use of the on-property facilities such as restaurants, gymnasium, meeting rooms, launderette, children’s playroom, as well as a residents’ lounge with a kitchen. Besides Citadines Namba Osaka, Ascott also operates seven other serviced residences in Japan. They are Ascott Marunouchi Tokyo, Somerset Azabu East Tokyo, Somerset Ginza East Tokyo, Somerset Shinagawa Tokyo, Citadines Central Shinjuku Tokyo, Citadines Karasuma-Gojo Kyoto and Citadines Shinjuku Tokyo. Next year, the company will open lyf Tenjin Fukuoka as well as Ascott’s first property in Yokohama, another Citadines property, in 2023. Review: Yokohama - Double Feature
Tumblr media
It's a Double Feature! At least that's what we're calling it for now.
Friends, let me introduce you to my good friend, Luke.
Luke, say 'hi'!
...
.....
...
This is a written review, so this didn't work the way I wanted it. But you read the words and now you're either intrigued or bored. Stick with us. Luke and I have been exploring various games together for what I think is almost a year now. We have some mutual friends, and also a mutual love for this hobby made of cardboard, so we thought it best that we get together and game together. It's great!
Today's inaugural double feature is all about Yokohama, a game published in 2017 by Tasty Minstrel Games. This appeared on Kickstarter as a "deluxified" version in June of 2016, reaching it's goal (and then-some), and was finally published in 2017 (these images are of the retail version, not the deluxified version).
Tumblr media
Yokohama has been given a lot of praise by a LOT of people...and certainly deserves it. It's a tricky thing, though. When you look at the big modular board, it's frightening, not to mention all of the icons. It's truly scary. IT'S SCARY, PEOPLE. But it isn't. It's not scary at all. In fact, it's warm and welcoming like your old great-aunt that always kept cookies on hand. It's that nice. It just *seems* like it'd be scary like most euros of this weight (I'd put it on par with another Tasty Minstrel hit, Orleans). In fact, this would only be daunting to those that are choosing this as their very first game into the designer board game hobby, which would be a terribly fantastic choice to make. Before we get into the review let me tell you a bit about the game. If you're interested in learning how to play it, I'd highly recommend checking out Gaming Rules! video on how to play it. This will definitely give you a much better idea on how to play this game, and what it's all about. You can find more information on that at the bottom of this post, or you can just go there now.
Yokohama features you, a merchant in the city of Yokohama, working to get fame by fulfilling orders for exports, working with foreign agents, and developing the city through building various shops around the city that help influence your fame.
On your turn, you place assistants around the board, moving your president through those areas, stopping once to perform that action. It feels like worker-placement, but I'm also wanting to call this an action-selection game. Maybe a action-placement-worker-election game. That makes sense. Right?
Tumblr media
Once you take your action which could be anything from collection resources, fulfilling exports, contributing to the church, or investing in technology. You do this for several turns until one of a few ending conditions takes place.
Given that this is a double feature, I thought I'd do this in some sort of written-interview style, only because as someone that does like to read reviews rather than watch them, I'm keen on that style. So, Luke! Tell me! Did you like this game?
Luke: I do like the game. I enjoy the planning aspect of placing the assistants strategically. For some reason I feel like this is a lot lighter than other heavy euros, but I think it mainly revolves around the worker placement mechanic. I also like the variety that the various cards bring to the game and how they plug into a designated space on an action tile. Still debating whether or not I want it in my collection, but it is one that I would enjoy playing more often than not.
Tumblr media
Andy: This game really puts you in a position to plan ahead for several turns. When you're collecting these resources, there's benefit to getting more resources later than getting fewer now. Putting up a trade house on one of those shops...it feels great! Getting the benefit of having permanent placement on the action tile, plus the immediate benefit of placing the building itself (unless you're one of the unlucky johnny-come-lately folks that waited too long (read: me...a lot). While I did like the game overall, I think this is a bit daunting because planning ahead is very hard to teach in a game, especially when there's so much variability in the game set up. Knowing that when you go into the game, you're going to have to plan ahead on every turn, this will make the world of difference in getting buy-in from a new player. I want more plays of this for sure. And more plays will be good to do, even though the drastic changes in set up variability will prevent some leftover strategy from game to game. Who do you think will like this game?
Luke:  Those who are interested in worker placement, resource management, area control games but still haven't played too many of them.
Andy: Yeah, I agree. This definitely incorporates all of those mechanisms around the board, but is unique enough that even a veteran would find something fresh here. Nevertheless, someone new to the hobby would do well to play this with someone experienced, which leads me to my final question, is there anything in Yokohama that turned you off of it?
Luke: I'm super picky about graphic design and feel that the tiles could be better designed even though I really like the graphic style. I noticed that they might have attempted to try and fix some issues in the deluxe version, but I doubt I would be satisfied. :(

I like the tiles, but it seems like there could be a better solution for laying everything out. You have long rectangular pieces bunched together and a pyramid stack of shorter rectangular tiles which all contributes to a kind of a non-cohesive structure on the table top.
Tumblr media
Andy: For someone not new to these games, I'm ok with the icons that they used; in fact I only had to reference the rulebook a couple of times during play to remind myself of what certain icons did and performed. My hang up was the ending conditions and process of scoring. Going through it though, actually makes sense. It just seemed odd to me. But I think it's me, and not the game.
And I agree on the layout. Even with just the two of us playing it, reaching around the pyramid of tiles was challenging, especially when you need to rely on knowledge of what these tiles do (which are described with pictures, not words). Reading upside down is easy for me, identifying images upside down is a bit more challenging (again...might just be me). It's because of the layout that I don't anticipate playing with a group larger than 2, though given that the pyramid will increase in size and scale based on player count, I'm fine with a two player game in Yokohama.
--=-==-=--=-==-=--=-==-=--=-==-=--
There you have it, folks! Yokohama! I hope you enjoyed this double feature review, and because Luke and I play a ton of games frequently, which means you can trust more of these will be coming, and soon!

Zaida Ben-Yusuf part 3 In 1903, Ben-Yusuf travelled to Japan, where she toured Yokohama, Kobe, Nagasaki, Kyoto, where she rented a house. This tour formed the basis for a series of four illustrated articles, "Japan Through My Camera," published in the Saturday Evening Post from April 23, 1904. In February 1905, her essay on Kyoto appeared in Booklovers Magazine and Leslie's Monthly Magazine published an illustrated article on "Women in Japan." She also wrote about Japanese architecture and lectured on the subject, with some of her photographs illustrating a January 1906 article by Katharine Budd in Architectural Record. In 1906, she published three photographs from a visit to Capri in the September issue of Photo Era, and in 1908, wrote three essays on life in England for the Saturday Evening Post. She returned to New York in November 1908, but was back in London the following year. The London phone book for 1911 listed her as a photographer in Chelsea. In 1912, Sadakichi Hartmann wrote that Ben-Yusuf had given up photography, and was living in the South Sea Islands. On September 15, following the outbreak of World War I and the German invasion of France, Ben-Yusuf returned to New York from Paris, where she had been living at the time. She applied for naturalization in 1919, describing herself as a photographer, and taking ten years off her age. She continued to travel, visiting Cuba in 1920 and Jamaica in 1921. Ben-Yusuf took a post with the Reed Fashion Service in New York City in 1924, and lectured at local department stores on fashion related subjects. In 1926, she was appointed style director for the Retail Millinery Association of New York, an organisation for which she later became director. By 1930, census records showed that Ben-Yusuf had married a textile designer, Frederick J. Norris. She died three years later on 27 September in the Methodist Episcopal Hospital in Brooklyn. #destroytheday

Enjoy a stroll and culinary delights in Okinawa, the old Ryukyu Kingdom Naha, Okinawa, where Naha Airport is located, is the hometown of Shuri prefecture, an area with strong traces from the Ryukyu kingdom.
Naha also contains International Street, bustling with tourists, and the Naha Shintoshin town planning project. This is an urban area of interest, allowing you to stroll through a historic and nostalgic town. Visitors can maneuver through the city using the Okinawa Urban Monorail.
[toc]
1. Explore the History of the Ryukyu Kingdom at Shuri Castle Park
Located a 20-minute walk from Shuri monorail station, Shuri Castle Park, Registered World Heritage. This was the court of the Ryukyu dynasty, which ruled over what is now Okinawa for 450 years.
Walkthrough Shurei Gate, a famous photography spot, and head up to the higher ground for the impressive painted main building. For an admission fee, you can go inside for up to 60 minutes to see the throne rooms and queens, as well as art objects and other items, as you experience the history of the tide. Great Ryukyu.
2. International Street, A Shopping Avenue Busy with Visitors
Naha’s International Street was known post-WW II as the miracle mile for its almost-instantaneous reconstruction. For souvenirs and restaurants, this is a major attraction for visitors to Okinawa.
Popular spots to visit include Makishi Central Public Market, dining facilities and Don Quijote, Japan's largest discount store. If you’re going for a stroll at night, there are izakaya where you can listen to performances of traditional Okinawa folk music and shamisen players.
International Street Access: Ten minutes away from Kentencho-mae or Makishi stop on the path of a walk alone
3. Okinawa Nature, History and Culture at the Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum
Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum, designed to resemble Okinawa castle ruins, is located in a part of Naha known as Sh Shososhin.
Here you can see exhibits about subtropical Okinawa nature, its culture, and history during the Ryukyu Dynasty, as well as when it was controlled by the United States. You can also learn about folklore and Okinawa archeology.
At art museums, there are mainly artworks related to Okinawa from artists inside and outside the province. The exhibits change seasonally, and you can also see old-fashioned Japanese kominka houses and outdoor artworks.
Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum Address: Okinawa, Naha, Omoromachi 3-1-1 Access: Ten minutes away from Omoromachi Station on the exclusive road
4. Food and Drink at Makishi Central Market
Enter the main market street outside the center of International Street and you'll arrive at Makishi Central Market. The first floor sells fish and fresh meat, with colorful fish and unusual seafood, pig feet, and other products.
The retro vibe feels pleasant while strolling through the back streets, and the standing bars and izakaya allow you to enjoy everyday life in Okinawa.
Makishi public market Address: Okinawa, Naha, Matsuo 2-10-1 Access: 10 minutes away from Makishi Station on the unitary path
5. Experience Traditional Okinawan Art with Tie-dye
At Okinawa's traditional fabric dyeing workshops and some tourist establishments, you can try your hand at the tie. Choosing a pattern and dyeing fabric is a common activity, and you can take home your finished product.
Shuri Ryusen Address: Okinawa, Naha, Shuri, Yamakawa Access: 15 minutes from Gibo Station on the Monorail
6. The Local Shopping Center, San-A Naha Main Place
At San-A Naha Main Place, a major shopping center frequented by residents, you can check out major electronics retailers and Tokyu Hands. It is also convenient for buying food in bulk. On the first floor, there's a remarkable Okinawa souvenir corner for the variety of snacks.
Ingredients for Okinawan taco rice, instant soba, Okinawa spices and other items used by Naha's local community can be purchased here. It is thrilling to walk through the spacious supermarket.
San-A Naha Main Place Address: Naha, Omoromachi 4-4-9
7. Take a Keepsake Photo Dressed in an Okinawan Kimono
How about having a photo in Okinawa's kimono to remember your trip? There are shops on International Road and around Shuri Castle with places to take photos. Today, they continue to be used in Ryukyu dances, mostly in Okinawa.
Women wear traditionally colored kimonos and hanagaki hats, while men wear sensational kimonos and hachimaki headbands. Sometimes you can just put kimono on your clothes.
In total, it takes about 15 to 30 minutes to get your picture, from choosing a kimono to taking a photo.
8. Tips for Enjoying the Night in Naha
We recommend staying one night in Naha if you arrive at the airport in the evening, or spend an evening of sightseeing in Naha before returning home. The one-way street from Naha Airport to Shuri Station is cheaper than other areas (about 550 yen / 1.75km) and allows convenient transportation when combined with a taxi.
If you take a boat to a remote island in the morning, you can reach the port quickly by taxi.
Have dinner and take a walk on International Street, watch Shuri Castle light up from Shuri Station on the exclusive road, and enjoy Naha's night view. For half a day, you can see another side of Okinawa, visiting Tsuboya Yachimun Street, with ceramics and antiques, Makishi Central Market, Shuri Prefecture and small alleys.
9. Try Popular Regional Cuisine
Okinawa soba is something you absolutely must try a tasting. The thickness and shape of noodles vary by island and region, and each shop prepares its soup in a different way. The soup comes from sources like pork bones and bonito flakes. One recommendation is the soba at Okinawa Soba Eibun.
10. Souvenirs You Have to Get In Okinawa
Okinawan chinsuko biscuits and Okinawan fried rice cakes called sata andagi are staples if you buy souvenirs from Okinawa.
Traditional art products with modern touches, as well as simple packaging products made of local ingredients, are very popular. Stroll down the supermarket walkway to discover Okinawa food that you can only find locally.

'Four or five for the final': Ticket numbers for Rugby World Cup dwindling as competition nears
New Post has been published on https://diary.nz/four-or-five-for-the-final-ticket-numbers-for-rugby-world-cup-dwindling-as-competition-nears/
'Four or five for the final': Ticket numbers for Rugby World Cup dwindling as competition nears
Less than 10 tickets as part of package deals for the Rugby World Cup final are still available for sale and ticket sellers are telling fanatics to act fast.
The All Blacks kick off their attempt for a third successive Rugby World Cup championship on September 21 when they take on South Africa in Yokohama City.
Fans who hadn’t bought tickets could still make it, New Zealand general manager of All Blacks Tours David Caldwell said, but stocks are running low.
READ MORE: All Blacks fans spending $20k banking on finals appearance Air NZ and Spark deal on Airpoints with Rugby World Cup sweetener Sky TV’s king-hit bid to keep rugby as competition with Spark heats up
“We, as the official partner of New Zealand Rugby and the official travel agent of New Zealand, we’ve got a handful of stuff left,” he told the Herald.
“I think we’re down to four or five tickets for the final, in packages. That’s about all we’ve got for the final. There’s not much left, that’s for sure.”
Due to an increased interest in Japan with the World Cup, Air New Zealand announced last year it would put on an extra 10 return services.
From July, the service increased from one daily return service a day to nine a week before reaching 10 services a week from December.
Air NZ chief revenue officer Cam Wallace previously said the airline expected thousands of Kiwis to be keen to head to Japan.
“We’re already experiencing increased demand from Kiwi rugby fans wanting to get to Japan next year,” he said in December 2018.
“These extra services represent more than 6,000 additional seats to Japan over a six-week period and are on sale now.”

Meanwhile, House of Travel commercial director Brent Thomas said the majority of Rugby World Cup bookings were made in 2018.
In reality, he said, if you hadn’t already booked it might be too late.
“There will always be last-minute enquiry, our advice is to ensure customers purchasing last-minute tickets and travel arrangements are done through a reputable travel provider, such as House of Travel.
“As the Rugby World Cup games will be played in cities all around Japan, it is business as usual for Tokyo with accommodation still being available.
“If you are interested in visiting Japan during the Rugby World Cup, our best advice is to visit your travel agent who will be able to advise what is available.”
If anyone was thinking about making the journey, Caldwell reiterated it was important to purchase tickets from a verified retailer.
“We advocate, whoever it is, we don’t care who the public buy tickets from just buy it from someone official and don’t get caught out.”

TDM1874 Brewery The Bottom Line
If you’re in the area then get down to TDM1874. The beers are well priced, tasty, and served well and all the prices include tax on the menu. The whole place is non-smoking and if you’re lucky, you might even get the chance to meet George, the British brewer, when he is serving. There is also no table charge and has a small outside drinking area – though it is a bit hairy there when the cars are speeding by. The only downside to TDM1874 is that it is in the middle of nowhere, so maybe an excuse is needed to get down there.
Wine or beer or sake?
TDM1874 Brewery Full Review
TDM1874 opened in November 2016 though it has a long history as it’s part of a sakaya that specialise in the retail of alcohol to restaurants and also wholesale in the area. It started out as a retail store with a huge sake and wine selection, before the brewery opened up later in December 2017. The name “TDM1874” stands for Ten Days Market, which happens to be Tokaichiba (十日市場) in English and also when the original sakaya opened in 1874. If that seems a long time ago, then putting into the traditional Japanese years, it was in Meiji 7.
The brewpub and shop are located in Tokaichiba, on the JR Yokohama Line, and it’s about a 10-minute walk through the houses to get there. It’s not the most convenient place to go for a beer by train, I have to admit, but then looking at Google Maps and seeing it’s only 20 minutes by car from my house is pretty dangerous, considering Japan has a strict “no drinking and driving” law. The whole place is non-smoking plus there is no table charge either at TDM1874. The menu for beer is in English though the food menus are in Japanese but the staff will explain in English. There is space inside for about 20 people seated, though you can stand up if you can find some space, and there is space for drinking outside when the weather is nice.
Prices include tax on the menu.
TDM1874 Pale Ale
TDM1874 Best British Bitter (BBB)
TDM1874 Cream Ale
IPA V2 Brewed with Azacca hops.
TDM1874 does have a brewpub and they only offer their own beers on tap – along with Asahi Super Dry, so you can bring your non-craft beer drinking friends along for some beers too. They have four of their own beers on tap, which vary throughout the year, and they come in two sizes – UK half-pint (284ml) from ¥420 to ¥450, and US pints (470ml) from ¥700 to ¥750. The prices on the beer menu don’t include tax, but the prices on the menu at the register do include tax. There wasn’t a happy hour nor were there any beer flights, but at these prices, it’s very easy to try all four for less than a beer flight in most bars. The beers were served up well, and when the kegs finally kicked, we kindly got given the beer for free. Can’t argue with that. If you want to drink bottles though, they’re for takeaway only – no trying to consume them on the premises nor outside in the small drinking area.
These prices include tax.
Chicken …. yummy
The food at TDM1874 is more snack based than meals; however, there were larger items on such as pizzas and muscles, which looked amazing when some people ordered them. Even better, there are chips on the menu, but we didn’t have any on the day as I kind of forgot to order them due to wanting to drink beer that day. The chicken was very nice though I wish I had some more of it.
