🌉 Angy stood beneath one of the 24 massive stone arches of the Ribblehead Viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales. Built by 19th-century navvies and completed in 1874, the viaduct carries the Settle to Carlisle Railway across the rugged terrain. 🌄

Proud to announce that my image "The Fellsman crosses Ribblehead Viaduct" has been awarded RUNNER-UP in UK Landscape Photographer of the Year 2022, featured in the Lines In The Landscape category (sponsored by Network Rail).

This is the second consecutive year I have received this accolade, so I'm feeling very honoured indeed.

A first for me today, I crossed #RibbleheadViaduct on a #train. Now...that's what you call a viaduct. Took a quick detour from a trip to Kendal to have a look at this monumental construction on the Settle-Carlisle railway. Took over 2000 men to build this, living in shanty towns on the adjacent moorland. Over 100 lost their lives !!!! Ribblehead Viaduct, North Yorkshire National Park This morning I took a drive up the M6 from Manchester then hung a right and drove across to Ingleton and the Ribblehead Viaduct. It's been several years since I was last here, the last time (like the times before) I was there to climb to the top of Ingleborough - the flat-topped mountain behind the viaduct which rises to 724m above sea level. I briefly thought about tackling that climb again this morning, then thought better of it. The weather in these parts can change very quickly, and I didn't have the necessary gear with me to do the climb safely. The last time I ventured up there, the weather closed in and you could hardly see where you were going. Ingleborough forms one of the Yorkshire three peaks walks, the other peaks being Whernside and Pen-y-ghent, and the challenge being to climb to the top of each (and walk between each one) in a day's hike, a total distance of around 25 miles. Ribblehead Viaduct is on the Settle to Carlisle railway line. Construction began in 1870 and took four years to build. Hundreds of 'Navvies' (railway builders) lost their lives during its construction, mainly due to accidents, fights and Smallpox outbreaks.
