Recently, I decided to take a trip to the city. I grew up in a rural area, and antiquing every weekend was my parents' idea of fun, so I've been trying to get out more as an adult.
I drove around for a while, found a populated area and pulled over to take a break when I--
Heeey, wait a second. What's that in the background?
OK, I didn't actually end up here by accident. The Rickmobile made a stop, and I dropped everything to go.
These cardboard cutouts greeted me at the building entrance. A man asked me to take his picture with them, and people had photoshoots with Anime Rick and Morty all night.
But I'm not here for cardboard cutouts, although that was a bonus. I'm here because this is the ultimate merchandise roundup. It blows all other merchandise roundups out of the water.
First off, I was surrounded by people wearing Rick and Morty merchandise. And, believe me, I came prepared with my own:
One fan said he liked my shirt! Bootleg, official, streetwear, old, new, eclectic...there were so many great shirts that I wish I could've taken photos of them all. I did ask a fellow fan for a picture of her Mr. Nimbus shirt as we waited in line, and she was delighted:
Three Adult Swim employees gave out prizes in the Rickmobile. While I waited, I noticed that somebody had taped a few drawings on the walls and ceiling.
When I approached, a worker drew an X on my hand with a permanent marker. She said that was to keep people from getting in line twice.
I thought I'd have to buy merchandise, but they gave it away for free! They had you spin a wheel, then gave you a prize with the corresponding number.
My turn! ✨
The bearded guy said "Go ahead and spin the wheel! Get schwifty!"
I won a tiny meditating Anime Rick pin. I'll have to find a safe spot to keep it. Maybe I should make a Rick Sanchez itabag...
And if you see me on the news, this is why.
Now it was time to explore. The Rickmobile was the main event, but Adult Swim had another surprise: Morty came along for a spin. And boy, he didn't know what to think.
Aaaaaaaahh!!
Still, Rick couldn't help being the center of attention. To be fair, he WAS the one giving out free stuff.
And it turned out that this wasn't the only Rickmobile present.
One of the food trucks joined in, too!
It was a bit of a drive, but I'm glad that I went because it was an incredible experience. It was amazing to be surrounded by so many Rick and Morty fans. Everyone was smiling and having a good time.
One woman pulled over in her vehicle and rolled down the window to ask an Adult Swim employee what was going on. When he told her they were promoting the Rick and Morty anime, her face broke out in a grin. "I love Rick and Morty!" she said.
Rick and Morty has attracted controversy, but you can't deny that it has a global fanbase that brings people together. What a great opportunity to relax and celebrate our favorite show.
On the way back to my car, I stopped and asked a guy if I could take a picture of his shirt. He enthusiastically agreed and told me he got this shirt at the 2018 stop.
When I said that I'd missed out, he told me that it wasn't that great--all they did was hand out beer. This time, they had prizes AND a screening. He was so happy and excited to be there. I need enthusiasm like that in my life.
Say what you will about Rick and Morty fans, but we are definitely not shy.
But hang on, guys, the story doesn't end here. Stay tuned for part two, where I'll tell you what happened after dark... 🌙
I haven’t posted in a long time, but the hate for the Rick & Morty Anime that comes out today has baffled me so much and I need answers.
Like, people are complaining about wanting a new season to be released—guys, I’m like 80% sure this is a completely different project with different people animating and working on it, which would mean that R&M is still being figured out and worked on as normal, like.
Come on now, the actual show is just a year away, stop being impatient.
Then you’ve got people complaining about the animation, as if it’s the worst thing ever, when it looks fine, and enjoyable to watch (personally reminds me of Kill La Kill with the style approach, though I do know it’s still very different). Just because it’s in a different art style that you personally might not like, doesn’t mean it’s bad.
Like, as an example, I don’t like the art style for Dragon Ball Z (one of the main reasons I never picked up the show), but I’m not going to say it’s trash and garbage, when clearly it’s not.
It’s like when people trash on artists for having a different art style, like, stop doing that. It’s a big reason that causes people to stop drawing all together, when they have so much potential and talent.
In short, just like, give the show a chance? Don’t shit on it right away, because they took a stylistic choice. It looks fun and interesting. Like, if it turns out to be bad, hate it for that reason.
i feel so bad for liking the RnM anime cuz all anyone ever says about it is how crappy / confusing it is 😭 I really like the artstyle and the non-linear storytelling <:(
3 posts in a row I see like "they cancelled XYZ for this?? who asked for it!" like MEEE!!! I DID!!! IM A LOSER LEAVE ME ALONE lolol
THE FIRST EPISODE OF THE ANIME WAS SO GOOD!!!!!! PLEASE I WANNA HEAR YALLS THOUGHTS AAAAAAAAAAAAA SPAM ME FOR ALL I CARE I WWANNA TALK ABOUT IT WITH YALL‼️‼️‼️
After I walked around, took pictures and grabbed a gift from the Rickmobile, I decided to drive home. I'm not interested in watching the anime, so why stay for the screening?
I drove about ten minutes away, and I thought--nope, I'm going back. This is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Watching movies and TV shows is way more fun when you're in a crowd. I'm an MCU fan, so I know how it works.
Earlier that evening, people were parked in the chairs, ready for the show.
Adult Swim reminded them not to record the episode. "We shouldn't have to tell you this, but people suck."
It started raining on the drive back to the Rickmobile, but luckily, it didn't last long. Unfortunately, I arrived just in time to catch the last five minutes. Whoops.
But they announced that they'd air the episode again! I just had to kill thirty minutes.
Check out that guy's Morty mask! 👇
I was hungry, so I bought a hot dog and homemade chips from a food truck. Adult Swim blasted their Spotify playlist--with ads. Apparently, they didn't want to spring for Spotify Premium.
The crowd slowly thinned out. The Rickmobile ran out of merchandise and closed up shop.
Weird, it looks like an ice cream truck in that first photo. 🍨
Morty managed to look even more terrified in the darkness. Someone helpfully illuminated his face with a spotlight.
Before the episode began, the crew played a track that I thought was a remix of the Rick and Morty theme song, but apparently, it's a track called Birth4000 by Floating Points.
And then it was showtime!
Before the episode, Adult Swim played another reminder that this preview was "just between us" and that piracy is bad. And they weren't joking--a guy standing next to me got caught recording the episode and had to leave after deleting the video from his phone.
The episode itself was OK. I enjoyed the art, animation and theme song, but the story was hard to follow. Summer was a badass, though. I also loved getting a glimpse of the Rick with long hair. I'll admit it: I'm biased because my OC is a fellow long-haired Rick.
Thinking about it now, I wonder how many people in the crowd also had OCs or roleplayed, wrote fics, made fan art, etc. It's easy to forget that even a lot of diehard fans don't take that route. We're our own little community inside a giant fanbase.
I hope I can attend another event like this in the future. It's one thing to spot thousands of Rick and Morty fans on Twitter or Reddit, but to see how many people love the show in person? And that's just a tiny fraction of its viewership.
long haired rick stirred up a dormant spirit that's been sleeping soundly within me, just waiting to wake up. as if an ancient protective seal has been peeled off of my forehead, no longer keeping my powers at bay.
