Inktober day 9: Leona Kingscholar // Comte Arnau
Comte Arnau is a legendary character, an "ànima en pena" (lost soul) to be exact, problably based on Arnau de Mataplana, a count who reigned over most of Ripollès during medieval times (unknown century), although there are multiple theories, none of which are confirmed and it's not even certain if Arnau de Mataplana even existed himself.
The myth tells that because of his number of unforgivable sins, he's been cursed to eternally wander the Earth upon his black horse, who exudes hellish flames through his mouth and eyes. He's also hunted by a pack of hellish dogs.
What differs in the various tellings of the myth is what were those sins he commited. One of the most known tells about how Arnau de Mataplana was engaged when he was 15 to Elvira, who doubled his age and lacked any kind of beauty. Arnau instead fell in love with a girl around his age called Adelaisa, but Adelaisa was forced to become a nun at the monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses, where she died some years later. When Arnau learned about her death, he infiltrated the monastery, stole her corpse and fled into night on his horse. But because he was wildly ridding his horse during a heavy storm at night he ended up falling off a cliff to his death, his dead lover in his arms.
(There a lot of versions of how he became cursed and who was he when he was alive, but if I write them all we're gonna be here all day, I chose the one I know)

From the site of "Les Ferreres" which is mentioned in documents from the year 1225, but mining operations were developed from the mid-18th century until the 1960s, when the mine was abandoned, comes this mineral specimen where we can see crystallizations of Azurite and Theisite on matrix.

Inktober day 10: Home de neu
Home de neu (snow man), also known as "Gegant de la neu" (Giant of the snow), comes from a story told in the comarques (Catalonia's internal divisions) of Ripollès and Cerdanya.
The story goes that and old childless marriage had to get on their house's roof to take down the snow that had accumulated after a seven day long snowstorm. The snow fell in front of the door and while the husband worked, the wife made a little snowman, which she after dressed with girl clothes. This snowman came to life, to the couple's utmost surprise. They decided to raise the snowgirl as their own child, but unfortunetly when spring came, the snowgirl melted like the rest of snow. The next winter, they tried again, this time but making a boy. But like the snowgirl the year before, the snowboy also melted once spring came.
The couple tried year after year, but the result didn't change, when spring came by the snowkid would melt without exception. One year, though, they decided to make a giant snowman, so with his size and strength could help with chores and heavy lifting until spring came. But once it came to life, the snowgiant ripped off his clothes, ate all the food the couple had and then fled to the snowy mountains, where snow never melts. Now the snowgiant lives there all year and only comes back down, running on snowy tops, when the first snoflakes start to fall.
