Lenormand Oracle Decks
Hello my friends, are you having a good day?
I have been playing around with some cards this morning and felt like sharing!
Tumblr media
With the popularity of Lenormand Oracle decks on the rise, I thought it might be good to have a closer look at this branch of divination cards.
I will give you a little history first (I am no expert though! Feel free to do your own research!):
When we talk about Lenormand cards we immediately connect them to Mademoiselle Le Normand, the French Fortune Teller who was famous as "Divinatrix to the Stars" in the first half of the 1800’s.
Tumblr media
However, it is my understanding that Marie Anne Adelaide Le Normand was not actually the creator of this divination-system.
It is true that she was a very accomplished diviner, reading coffee-grounds and egg-whites, practising Cartomancy and Palmistry, Numerology, Scrying and Necromancy amongst others! But as far as I know, she used playing cards for her readings, not the cards we have come to know as Lenormand...
The naming of these cards seems to have more to do with 19th century publishers wanting to profit from Mademoiselle Le Normand’s fame - she had written around 14 books about her readings for- and dealings with- her famous (and infamous) contempories, including Robespierre and Empress Josephine! She was also believed to have predicted the rise and fall of Napoleon’s empire.
I think that it was later discovered that many of her accounts described in her books were, at the very least, exaggerated!
If you want to know more about the possible origens of today’s Lenormand Oracles, I suggest you turn to the experts who will be able to tell you so much more than I could: Mary K. Greer for one has done some excellent research I believe, as has Robert M. Place. I am sure there have been many others!
Now a little bit about the deck itself:
The first deck to have emerged with The Le Normand name attached was Le Grand Jeu de Mlle Lenormand, published 2 years after her death - this set consisted of 54 cards (52 related to normal playing cards plus 2 significators). My knowledge of this deck is severely lacking, hence I will move on to the most popular Lenormand Oracle that we use today.
Tumblr media
The Petit Lenormand is a 36 card oracle deck first published in 1846 in Germany and it was very different from the earlier French decks. This is the deck that modern Lenormand cards are based on.
The cards depict the following images:
1. The Rider
2. The Clover
3. The Ship
4. The House
5. The Tree
6. The Clouds
7. The Snake
8. The Coffin
9. The Bouquet
10. The Scythe
11. The Whip
12. The Birds
13. The Child
14. The Fox
15. The Bear
16. The Stars
17. The Stork
18. The Dog
19. The Tower
20. The Garden
21. The Mountain
22. The Path
23. The Mice
24. The Heart
25. The Ring
26. The Book
27. The Letter
28. The Man
29. The Woman
30. The Lily
31. The Sun
32. The Moon
33. The Key
34. The Fish
35. The Anchor
36. The Cross
A lot of decks (but not some of the more modern ones) also display a small playing card, or at least a particular suit of playing cards (hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades) - there are also decks that have an extra symbol relating to astrology.
You can use these decks on many different levels, from only working with the main imagery to including numerology and/or astrology.
Many of todays decks also include extra cards (from extra men and women to yes/no cards or to complete the full 52 playing card decks).
The main classic Lenormand Spreads used are the 3 - 5 or 9 card spreads or the Grand Tableau - which incorporates all 36 cards in a lay-out consisting of 4 rows of 8 cards each and one row of 4 cards. The cards are read according to their position in the spread.
Tumblr media
Of course you could just draw one or two cards if you want, there are also more modern Lenormand spreads available on top of the classics.
Although some of the cards found in a Lenormand deck also occur in a Tarot deck, I find that with Lenormand you take the cards more at face-value and the layering of interpretations does not go quite as deep as with Tarot.
The main similar cards are The Sun, The Moon, The Stars and The Tower (note the Tower is still standing here!) - but The Scythe could be related to the Death card in Tarot whilst The Heart card is easily connected to The Lovers.
Tumblr media
Other cards such as The Dog may not occur in Tarot, but because of it’s rich imagery and symbolism the meaning may be recognisable to those familiar with (in the example of The Dog) The Fool card, where often a faithful little dog is seen nipping at his master’s heels.
Tumblr media
This dog can also be found in tarot’s Moon card, alongside the wolf/fox/coyote often used to depict our “wild” side - Lenormand’s Fox may be related to this image as well.
Tumblr media
Personally I prefer my Lenormand deck to have small-sized cards, you would need a massive table to complete a Grand Tableau if you have oversized cards!
Some of my favourite decks are: The Dreaming Way Lenormand; The Claire de Lune Lenormand; Ciro Marchetti’s Gilded Reverie Lenormand and The Scrying Ink Petit Lenormand.
Tumblr media
The latter is currently sold out but will hopefully be reprinted and in the mean time you can still enjoy it digitally by downloading the app, which will give you access to all of it’s beautiful watercolour images, the card interpretations and several spreads!
I find these apps from The Fool’s Dog very useful by the way, if you are unsure wether or not a particular Tarot or Lenormand deck is for you, then you can get to know it at a very reasonable price before committing to buying an actual deck.
The deck I was using this morning was the Alternate Realities Lenormand by Jae Larson Designs.
This is an oldfashioned-style deck that has the added benefit of having “cheat-words” printed unobtrusively in the background - very useful if you haven’t mastered the Lenormand system yet but want to start doing spreads without constantly referring to a guidebook!
Tumblr media
I hope you found some of this explanation interesting or useful!
Much Love,
Xxx

I've been trying to bring meditative practices to other moments of my life besides the actual quiet, dedicated meditation time I set aside each day. We'll see how it goes! Tarot and oracle decks still are and will forever be my preferred tools though, so here comes another review! Today's deck is another creation from Robert M. Place who you may already know because of him being renowned in the tarot world, and because I already reviewed one of his decks (The Alchemical Tarot Renewed 4th Edition). It's turn for the Tarot of the Sevenfold Mystery, let's see which one you'll like best!
In Robert's words, it "expresses the transcendental philosophy that is linked to the origin of the Tarot. It illustrates the ancient Western systems of the three soul levels and seven soul centers that function as steps on a mystical ladder of ascent to higher consciousness. It can be read on many levels, from the mundane to the spiritual, it is a source of inner wisdom and advise, and can uncover the longings of the soul". From a study or research point of view, this is a deck that calls to me deeply as the more I work with tarot decks, the more I want to know about them. In these 78 cards, numbers and Platonic theories are quite at the core of the symbolism, which is oh so rich. Every detail speaks of something, from the colours to the symbols to the words that sneak into some of the illustrations. But it is done in such a tactful, clean way that no card feels busy or distracting.
Tumblr media
Thus, this is a deck that shines both in its artwork and in its theoretical frame. There's so much to read about it here, so I will now concentrate on other aspects. I find these cards are pretty different from those of the Alchemical Tarot. Here, there's what I would call foreground focus. What is closer to the reader is more detailed, more vividly coloured and (in general) more important that background elements, which tend to be simpler. Instead of seeing a card as containing multiple layers, I see it as containing different pieces of a puzzle (I hope that makes sense). In this regard, I think that although it may appear intimidating for being super rich and well researched, it can be a true gem for beginners. It feels so open, and has this sincere charm to it.
The 23 page companion booklet includes a wonderful introduction containing the information I linked above and again here, as well as meanings for each card. It's longer for the majors, but the short descriptions in the minors are equally effective - which can also be applied to the artwork, at the minors are a bit simpler than the majors (with exceptions). By the way, the illustrations are framed by an external white border, and an inner one that with different colours for each suit.
The Tarot of the Sevenfold Mystery is yet another great work by Robert M. Place. Its beauty, its realiable energy and its thoughtful approach make it a great choice for beginners and experts alike. You can also check his Alchemical Tarot (and my review of it), The Hermes Playing Card Oracle, The Burning Serpent Oracle, The New York Lenormand, The Raziel Tarot, and The Facsimile Italian Renaissance Woodcut Tarocchi, as well as other decks that are not sold on this site and which include The Angels Tarot, The Tarot of the Saints, The Buddha Tarot and the Vampire Tarot. And finally, don’t forget to also check his new book, The Tarot, Magic, Alchemy, Hermeticism, and Neoplatonism.

Taking pictures is getting more difficult now that days are shorter. I never know what time will be the best to take nice pics with natural sunlight. Oh well, it's all about trial and error now. Today I'm here with a really loved tarot deck full of rich symbolism: The Alchemical Tarot: Renewed Fourth Edition by Robert M. Place (an important name in the world of tarot). By the name you can already understand why I say it's a well-known and loved deck, as it's already on its fourth edition! In this case, the differences go beyond a set number of decks per edition, and instead we find a revamped 79 card deck.
All four editions are different, and Robert makes a better job than I would ever do at describing them in this page. However, to give you a key image, this deck has a totally redesigned colouring which resembles an antique alchemical manuscript, and features many more alchemical symbols. Indeed, alchemy is at the core of this deck. Why is that so? In words of Robert, this "79 card Tarot deck [...] demonstrates the close link between alchemical symbolism and traditional Tarot imagery and illustrates that the Tarot, like the alchemical quest, is designed to lead one to the gold of inner wisdom". If you're wondering about the 79th card, it's the original Lovers card that was censored in the first publication (so it means there are two Lovers cards including the one that was first published). I really appreciate that you can see all of the cards here, including those two Lovers cards as well as the back design - though they look much better in life, the illustrations pop out because of the high quality printing!
Tumblr media
The illustrations are amazing. They contain so much deep symbolism without being overwhelmed, by making use of even the tiniest details (expressions, small elements, and of course the use of colours and alchemical symbols). They feature lots of human characters, but also mythic creatures, animals, plants and human-made objects. There are many cards that I adore, but if I were to pick one, I'd say the Ace of Vessels (cups) is the one I can't get out of my mind.
Because of how expressive and beautiful it is, I think beginners and experts (whatever expert means!) would appreciate it. It's a great deck to build layers of understanding for each card (of course always taking into account the alchemical factor). It can give hours upon hours of study and meditation, and though it doesn't come with a booklet, you can find information about each card here. The cards come in a custom tuckbox and feature a glossy finish.
The Alchemical Tarot in all its editions is an incredibly interesting and intriguing deck, but I think this Renewed Fourth Edition is seriously the best. There is nothing that can beat the harmony created between the alchemical symbols and the antique feeling of the parchment toned illustrations. And this isn't the only work by Robert M. Place of course! You can also check The Tarot of the Sevenfold Mystery (second fav), The Hermes Playing Card Oracle, The Burning Serpent Oracle, The New York Lenormand, The Raziel Tarot, and The Facsimile Italian Renaissance Woodcut Tarocchi, as well as others that are not sold on this site and which include The Angels Tarot, The Tarot of the Saints, The Buddha Tarot and the Vampire Tarot. And you can pre-order his new book, The Tarot, Magic, Alchemy, Hermeticism, and Neoplatonism! Plenty of eye (and spirit) candy for everyone!
