Most translators are sick of talking about fidelity and so am I. But I do care about respect. I want to respect the texts I translate, and I want my craft to show it. I want to be a good guest: observant, appreciative, offering both my company and my independence as proof of my trust.

Poema
Robin Myers (Estados Unidos, 1987)
vieja, rara, invitada.
No me animaba a confesarles
¿Si yo me muero, ustedes igual van a estar bien?
Y mi madre lloró también, y dijo,
Sí, se nos rompería el corazón
pero estaríamos bien.
No me acuerdo de haber vuelto a dormir.

“The Crane” - Javier Peñalosa M.
I’d never been so close to one.
When I found it hidden in the boat,
beside the riverbank,
its eyes still shifted back and forth,
as if sight itself were movement,
flight.
Its wings were broken, and its long, thin neck,
as graceful as the reeds,
could only intimate its feathers, slicked with mud.
The acid ants, bright red, ate from the gaping flesh,
the bird-blood streaming from its side.
I stared, afraid to touch:
I’d never known about the drawing-out of death,
this trembling beyond pain.
The crane was drawing labored breaths
when the handle of the oar I gripped
shattered its skull.
It made no sound, it never squawked,
but with a reflex, the kind that life can’t yield,
it moved that leg of river grasses
once or twice.
I felt a line of cold rise slowly to my neck,
my hands shook, since they couldn’t weep,
and in my soul, compassion
wore shame’s face for the first time.
But in the splendor of the body
that fractures had abased,
and as the spirit of the bird cut free,
something in me vanished, too, something fragile, dying.
That was many years ago, and sometimes, in the afternoons,
I watch the crane return, inside me,
across the broad sky of my youth,
lurching, barely in flight, nearing the ground.
I know it’s very tired,
as all things that repeat themselves are tired:
crickets’ unchanging song,
what’s on the other side of windows,
the constant weight of blame.
But I’m waiting for it to fall
so I can draw close again, the oar clutched in my hands.

After the night, day breaks: The Brush by Eliana Hernández-Pachón
Pablo and Ester live in the hills. Their children are grown. Their lives are simple, bound to the land, but lately there have been signs, omens. Pablo is concerned:
For some time now
he’s felt a heavy change pressing the air,
and can’t explain it.
Like when
he walks through town at night,
and when he hears the animals
can’t sleep.
Sensing danger, he gathers some papers and items in a box and goes…

Damian and Jon just playing around lol, with Maya and Kathy in the background witnessing it (and yes, I know, Damian looks taller than Jon here. Just pretend that Jon's probably lifting him up here or that he's standing on his tippy toes, or maybe he's standing on top of a box or something lol)
Based on this silly behind the scenes photo that Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers from the Wednesday show took together. I thought it would be funny if it was redrawn as Damijon lol

Both ethically and aesthetically, I’m more compelled by the thought of translator as eternal guest. Or, at any rate, as the kind of guest-host forged by being a long-term inhabitant, an apprentice, a participant-observer in another place: an arrival that becomes an entire life. A life in which being a friend and neighbor defines your everyday reality, even your identity, more than anything else.
