파란노을 (Parannoul) - After The Night
I've been following the anonymous Korean musician known as Parannoul since he released To See The Next Part Of The Dream in 2021. His music blends shoegaze emo and post rock in such a natural way that I now understand how my husband is always getting them mixed up.
After The Night is a live album and holy shit does that format suit Parannoul's sound. The extra haziness and the occasional crowd sounds adds an incredible atmosphere and the lower production is honestly great. The constant alarm clock motif that tends to signal song changes also adds to the dreamlike atmosphere, as if we are meant to be waking up from a dream after each track only to fall back into a new one.
Now if you took just the first seven tracks then you'd be looking at a masterful live album that is a welcome addition to the Parannoul library. But then there's the final track. A 46 minute rendition of Into The Endless Night. I'm already the kind of person to go ham over an extremely long song, but Into The Endless Night still caught me by surprise. It builds and builds, crescendoing like many a post rock track but with the ebb and flow and fuzz of shoegaze. It builds ominously into chaotic fervor and then falls back into a sad delicate lull. There is a segment in the middle where the music drops to barely a murmur and then voices come in expressing their hopes and dreams for the future. It is haunting. This song alone would make for an unbelievable live album. The fact that we get the whole package is amazing. After The Night is probably.what I'm gonna be measuring modern live albums against for the time being.

injury prompts bc reasons | accepting!
The shifting sands of this planet were memorable for the nostalgia it wrought from her. Hair pinned up carefully beneath the veil she wore to hide her decidedly Betazoid features, she scanned the horizon, watching the setting sun as it began to sink beneath a dune.
Their first night.
They had only been on the planet for a few hours, and most of their time had been procuring the disguises necessary to sink into the society of this pre-warp planet. The rest of it had been trying to obtain information about the distress signal they had picked up from space. How could a pre-warp society send a perfectly coded distress signal into outerspace? It was succinct, a simple ‘SOS’ on repeat. Was someone trapped here? The captain had decided to investigate. He was here because — well, he was the captain. Aella was here because she assured him she could catch onto the language with the limited information their computer had of the planet.
And she was. Mostly...
Shame and guilt clouded her mind as she thought back on the dispute — caused by a misunderstood word on her part. It had ended in a rather explosive, violent fight. Because of her failure, her captain was now limping, and she was bracing one of his sides, trying to get him to a merchant they’d been told had strange and unusual artifacts, and may have what they were looking for.
If only the merchant wasn’t sleeping so far from the city limits, tonight...
They made it a fair way, her captain in pain and Aella trying to focus on her steps and not his feelings, before he told her to go on ahead. She did, indeed, stop at the direction, but...
“That will not happen.” Clear, distinct refusal. “We... can rest. Allow me to look at it, sir.”

If I had a heart, I could love you
If I had a voice, I would sing
After the night, when I wake up
I'll see what tomorrow brings
Dangling feet from window frame
Will they ever, ever reach the floor
More, give me more, give me more
If I had a heart (Fever Ray)

After the night, day breaks: The Brush by Eliana Hernández-Pachón
Pablo and Ester live in the hills. Their children are grown. Their lives are simple, bound to the land, but lately there have been signs, omens. Pablo is concerned:
For some time now
he’s felt a heavy change pressing the air,
and can’t explain it.
Like when
he walks through town at night,
and when he hears the animals
can’t sleep.
Sensing danger, he gathers some papers and items in a box and goes…

"She was perfect. The only thing going for me." Simon mumbled, alcohol blazing through his veins as he leaned on Soap.
"She didnae break up wit' ya, mate. She needed tae go feed her dog." Soap snorted.
"I can still smell her perfume, Jawnny." Simon sniffled.
