Yeah, it's an Uwe Boll movie: Weirdly competent actors being directed by a very silly man to act out a terrible script. It's not good, but quite watchable.

I headcanon she got into makeup pretty late and is only learning now (relatable). She would mosly just wear mascara and dark graphic lipstick (no pencil). Her eyeshadow might be poorly blended and eyeliner a bit crooked (funny enough her liner got better after she lost her hand but she would never admit this to anyone in protocol) (idk is she's right or left handed it's a headcanon)

Atlantic Theater Map Declassified

On behalf of our crew, our colleagues at Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's (TPWD) Cultural Resources branch, and OnAim Conservation, I am pleased to announce that the stabilization, conservation, and partial restoration of the Atlantic Theater Map in the Captain's Cabin is complete!

This map of the WWII Atlantic Theater was painted on a bulkhead in the Captain's Cabin after September 1944 (based on references in the map). It shows the ports of call Texas made during WWII (white dots with anchors in them), where she performed shore bombardment (noted by little explosions), national capitals (yellow triangles), and a few surprise discoveries as the map was conserved.

Sometime after 1966 (which is when the only known historic photo of the map was taken), the map along with the rest of the Captain's Cabin was painted white. That act was not great, but not terrible either. What was truly terrible is a window was cut into the bulkhead right in the middle of the map sometime in the late 1970s, after the map and compartment were painted white. We believe that because the map had been painted over and the loss of institutional knowledge of the map, those who made that decision did not know it was there.

Fast forward to around 2000 when the map beings to reveal itself as the white paint begins to flake off and the map is rediscovered during the planning for the Captain's Cabin restoration. When the Captain's Cabin was restored, the window was welded up and the map was partially uncovered exposing the Mediterranean and most of Europe. In 2009, I discovered the 1966 picture of Chief McKeown with the map in the background, which spurred a lot of excitement about what possibly survived. However, due to budgetary constraints we were not able to perform any real conservation treatments to the map.

This is the map in 2002. You can see Italy, Southern France, and the Mediterranean emerging. At left you can see the frame of the infamous window.

The map sat partially uncovered and untouched until last summer. In partnership with TPWD Cultural Resources we hired OnAim Conservation to stabilize the remaining paint on the bulkhead, just prior to the tow to Galveston. This initial step preserved what remained and protected it from any vibrations from the tow and/or shipyard work. It also set the stage for uncovering the rest of the map and recreating the missing sections.

This is the map in 2011. During the 2002-2003 Captain's Cabin restoration, it was partially uncovered. But work stopped out of fear of damaging the map further.

All through July 2023, the incredibly talented husband and wife team of Zak Miano and Ariane Roesch (who own OnAim Conservation), with the expertise and hard work of artist and conservator Bob Pringle, performed the tedious work of uncovering the map by removing the remaining white paint, revealing that much more of the map survived than anyone thought. They also discovered that whoever painted the map, had painted the State of Texas in Africa in burnt orange!

This is the map as it appears today. The gloss is from Damar varnish that was used by OnAim to protect the paint and bad lighting.

Europe afte the remaining remnants of white overpaint was removed and the the destroyed sections of Spain and North Africa were recreated. You can see the explosions where the ship did shore bombardment at N. Africa, Normandy, and Southern France.

We made the decision to use French Morocco as Morocco was a 'protectorate' of France and French Morroco showed on a lot of 1940s maps.

Once the map was uncovered, OnAim added Kati Ozanic-Lemberger to the team to recreate the destroyed section and features of the map. In consultation with TPWD Cultural Resources, it was a unanimous decision to touch up the paint of the surviving sections of the map, fill in and blend in missing areas within surviving sections, and recreate the large missing sections. We made this decision for two main reasons, 1) it would preserve the existing map longer 2) it would allow us to tell the story of what happened to this map. The artistry of OnAim is phenomenal in how they blended the recreated areas of the map with the original, infilled and blended missing patches, and emphasized the surviving features that were being last. The map blew me away, but the skill of these folks was just as impressive.

The big surprise: TEXAS!

The Eastern seaboard of N. America, with all of Texas's Dec 7, 1941 to September 1944 ports of call. Another discovery OnAim made was the remnants of 'North'. THis do not show in the 1966 photo, Referencing period maps, we opted to infill the missing sections of 'North' and create 'North Atlantic Ocean'. As that seemed the most logical as to what was there -there was no 'South'. Because this was largely on the destroyed section we would not be harming the original map.

The faded areas are what survived of 'North'. The more solid and brighter blue is what was infilled. Same with the gray for the oceans.

I also want to add that Ariane, Kati, Bob, and Zach were working directly under the work going on the Signal Bridge. They performed their magic while having to deal with the sounds of needle guns, grinders, hammers, et al, right above their heads and occasionally getting smoked out from welding and cutting smoke that would get sucked into Captain's Cabin. How they kept steady hands and focus amid the normal cacophony of a shipyard environment is astounding.

The Wizard of Oz is deeply ingrained into our culture. While many people can practically recite the 1939 movie, the original source material isn’t as well known. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum was published in 1900. There are a lot of theories as to what inspired Baum – but the answer may be who rather than what. Baum’s mother-in-law Matilda Joslyn Gage was a groundbreaking writer and activist who could’ve been in every high school history textbook if she hadn’t had a falling out with the leaders of the suffrage movement. But her ideas live on in The Land of Oz. I talk with historian Sally Roesch Wagner and UNC-Charlotte professor Dina Massachi about the politics of gender in Gage’s works and Baum’s stories. And I talk with therapist Dr. Gita Dorothy Morena who has a very personal connection to the books.

عرفت فى الحضارة الاثيوبيه باسم #ماجِدة، و في الحضارة الرومانية بإسم #نيكولا, عاشت في القرن العاشر قبل الميلاد.

ابنها من سليمان الحكيم هو منليك و معناه بالعربية الحميرية *ابن الحكيم* و هو أول ملك ولي على الحبشة، بعده أباطره لمملكة أكسوم، و كان هيلا سيلاسي آخر الأباطره.

مملكه سبأ هي مملكة قديمة قامت 2000 سنة قبل الميلاد في اليمن و الحبشة و أريتيريا، و استمرت لغايه قيام الدولة الحميرية, ازدهرت المملكة فى القرن الثامن ق.م.

لم تكن رسومات العصور الوسطى الاوروبية المتعلقة بملكة سبأ بشعبية رسومات أخرى مصورة لشخصيات العهد القديم, و كانت مختلفة لاختلاف الروايات و كثرة ذكر الملكة فى عدة ثقافات تؤكد أصولها العربية اليمنية من بني إسماعيل، فالاثيوبيون رسموها انعكاسًا لملامحهم، و الأوروبيون رسموها بملامح أوروبية كعادتهم فى تصوير الشخصيات من النصوص المقدسة، زاد الاهتمام بالملكة فى عصر النهضة أو عصر التنوير كالإيطالي بييرو ديلا فرانشيسكا و لوحته تعظيم الخشبة المقدسة و لقاء ملكة سبأ وسليمان (ايطاليه:Adorazione del sacro legno e incontro di Salomone con la Regina di Saba)

و قد ظهرت بلقيس فى غرف رافاييل أيضًا، و فنانون آخرون كلورنزو جبرتي و عمله بوابة الفردوس..

=بلقيس ملكة سبأ=

بلقيس اسم اشتهرت به ملكة سبأ العربية و قد كانت معاصرةً للنبي سليمان عليه السلام الذي يرجح أنه عاش في القرن العاشر قبل الميلاد( 935-970م ق.م(. غير أن المصادر العربية أوردت عدة اشتقاقات لهذا الإسم، و منهم ابن دريد ضمن الأسماء العربية الحميرية القديمة، ويتفرد في ذلك نشوان بن سعيد الحميري الذي قدم اشتقاقاً للاسم فقال في معجمه(شمس العلوم) : "وبلقيس اسمان جعلا اسماً واحداً مثل حضرموت وبعلبك؛ وذلك أن بلقيس لَمَّا ملكت الملك بعد أبيها الهدهاد بن شرحبيل قال بعض حمير لبعض: ما سيرة هذه الملكة من سيرة أبيها ؟ فقالوا : #بلقيس. أي بالقياس فسميت بلقيس".

ورغم بعض المحاولات #لتعجيم اسمها في المصادر الأجنبية لم تفلح في تقديم تفسير مفيد للاسم، ولعل أشهر تلك المحاولات ما جاء به (روش ROESCH ) في مقالٍ نشره عام( 1880م/ 1297هـ) وهو أن بلقيس كلمةٌ يونانية تعني جارية (PALLAKIS )، ربما كان لها علاقة بالكلمة العربية (PILAEGES ( وبالمعنى نفسه. على أن مثل هذا التفسير يُوحي بأن صاحبة الاسم كانت امرأةً ضعيفةً وتابعة، وهو أمرٌ لا يتفق مع أوصاف تلك الملكة عند الإخباريين؛ فقد ذكر ابن هشام في روايته لكتاب( التيجان) لوهب بن منبه أنه لَمَّا حضرت أباها الوفاة جمع وجوه مملكته وأهل المشورة، وكان من جملة ما قاله له لِيُسَوِّغ استخلاف بلقيس عليهم: " إني رأيتُ الرجالَ، وعَجَمْتُ أهلَ الفضل وسبرتهم، وشهدتُ من أدركتُ من ملوكها فلا والذي أحلفُ به ما رأيت مثلَ بلقيسَ رأياً وعلماً وحلماً ". أو ما ذكره على لسان (هدهد مارب)، وهو يصف الملكة لهدهد سليمان بقوله: " ملكتنا امرأةٌ لم يرَ الناسُ مثلها في حسنها وفضلها وحسن تدبيرها وكثرة جنودها والخير الذي أعطيته في بلدها ".

ومِمَّا يمكن تأكيده في هذا الشأن أن تكون التسميةُ كنيةً في الأصل منحوتةً من كلمتين إحداهما الاسم(#قيس)، ويذكر ابن الكلبي في ( جمهرته ) قيساً ضمن شجرة نسبها؛ فهي (بنت القيس)كقولهم (ابن القيس) أو( أبو القيس)، فتصبح الكلمتان بعد النحت ودَرْج الكلام بلقيس، ثم جرى كسر القاف بعد ذلك قياساً على ما هو مشهور في مثل هذه الكُنى كما تنتهي كلمتا (أبو الفقيه) أو (ابن الفقيه) إلى بلفقيه و(أبو القاسم) إلى بلقاسم .

غير أن التواتر المشهور عند نشوان أن أباها هو الهدهاد بن شرحبيل، وينتمي إلى ذِي سحر من المثامنة وهي الأبيات الثمانية من حمير، أو هو الهدهاد بن شرح بن شرحبيل بن الحارث الرائش كما يذكر الهمداني.

والقرآن والتوراة- وهما المصدران الأساسيان لقصة ملكة سبأ -لم يوردا لها اسماً؛ فالتوراة تنعتها بـ(ملكة سبأ) أو (ملكة تيمنا) أي (ملكة الجنوب)، وتذكر أنها زارت النبي سليمان، وقدمت له هدايا ثمينة، والقرآن الكريم لا يذكر اسماً لها. قال الله تعالى: " وجئتك من سبأٍ بنبأٍ يقين إني وجدت امرأةً تملكهم وأوتيت من كل شيء ولها عرشٌ عظيم " (النمل:22-23).

أما المصادر العربية الأساسية في قصة هذه الملكة فتذكرها بالاسم بلقيس خاصة كتاب( التيجان) لابن هشام وكتاب( الإكليل) للهمداني و(القصيدة الحميرية) لنشوان الحميري يقول نشوان:

أم أينَ بلقيسُ المعظَّمُ عرشُهُا أوصرحُهُا العالي على الأضراحِ

زارتْ سليمانَ النبيَّ بتدمرٍ مِنْ ماربٍ ديناً بلا استنكـاحِ

وقصة الملكة بلقيس ذائعة منذ القدم، وقد تجاوزت شهرتها مسرح أحداثها، وتناقلتها شعوبٌ أخرى بصيغ مختلفة وروايات متعددة، وتناولتها شروحات التوراة وكتب تفسير القرآن، ودخلت في قصص الأنبياء ونصوص القديسين المسيحيين، وعُنِيَتْ بتفاصيلها كتبُ الأخبار والتاريخ خاصةً اليمنية منها، واستلهمتها روائع الفنانين الأوروبيين في عصر النهضة مثل رافائيل ورويموندي وجبرتي. واتُخِذَ موضوع القصة أساساً لكتاب الحبشة المعروف( كُبْر أنجست) أي كتاب (مجد الملوك) .

وقد كان لانتشار القصبة أثر في تنازع الناس حول الملكة، واختلافهم في اسمها وأصلها وموطنها؛ مِمَّا أضفى عليها أخباراً مصطنعةً وألواناً متعددةً كادت تَغلِب نواة القصة التاريخية، وتحولها إلى حكاية شعبية تُروى في أزمنة متفاوتة ومواطن متباعدة.

على أنَّ أشهر حادثة في حياة تلك الملكة هي زيارتها للنبي سليمان عليه السلام والقرآن الكريم قد نص على هذه الحادثة، وما كان من كلام الهدهد وكلام بلقيس وكلام سليمان وإسلامها مع سليمان لله رب العالمين .

وفي مصادر القصة الأخرى تفاصيل كثيرة تختلف وتتفق على غرار ما يعتري مثل تلك الحكايات من زيادة ونقصان بحكم تقادم الزمن وولع الرواة بالتلوين والمبالغة بقصد الإمتاع. ومن أخبار الزيارة أنَّ بلقيس عندما اتخذت قرار الزيارة كتبت إلى النبي سليمان:" إني قادمة إليك بملوك قومي؛ حتى أنظر ما أمْرُكَ وما تدعوني إليه من دينك، ولتسأله مسائل عدة تمتحن نبوته وحكمته، ثم حملت معها هدايا كثيرة ودخلت بيت المقدس (أورشليم) بجمال تحملُ اللبان والطيوب والذهب والأحجار الكريمة، فاستقبلها سليمان بالترحاب، وأحسن وفادتها، وبهرتها حكمتُهُ وقوتُهُ وعجائبُ ما تصنع الجن له وهم في خدمته. ثم قال لها: ادخلي الصرح، وكان قد عُمِل من زجاج أبيض كأنه الماء في صفاءِ لونهِ، وأرسل الماء من تحته، ووضع له سريراً فيه فجلس عليه، فلَمَّا رأته حسبته لجةً، وكشفت عن ساقيها ظناً منها أنه ماء لتخوض فيه، ثم استدركت وقالت: إنه صرحٌ ممردٌ من قواريرَ، وليست لجةً، وأُسْقِطَ في يدها حين رأت عجيب ما صنع سليمان؛ فأقرت بحكمته ونبوته، وأسلمت وحسُنَ إسلامُها. وقيل إنه تزوجها وولدت له ولداً اسمه (رحبعم)، وقيل إنه زَوَّجَها( ذو بَتَع) من همدان، وردهما إلى اليمن وأمر الجن فبنوا لها قصر سَلْحين في مارب .

ويرى بعضهم أن قصة ملكة سبأ من القصص الجميل الذي يطغى نَفَسُه على الأصل، ولم يُعثر على اسم الملكة في الكتابات القديمة، ولم تدل عليها اللُّقَى الأثرية المكتشفة، بل يذهب بعضهم إلى أن سبأ لم تكن في اليمن، وإنما في مكان ما إلى الجنوب من فلسطين أو في منطقة شمال غرب جزيرة العرب. والموروث الحبشي يرى أن بلقيس ملكة حبشية زارت سليمان من أرض الحبشة وتزوجت به وأنجبت له ولداً .

على أنه ليس لدى علماء الآثار والتاريخ أي دلائل قاطعة على نسبة هذه القصة في أصلها إلى الحبشة أو إلى شمال غرب جزيرة العرب. ويرى جمهور العلماء أن الآثار الكشفية في اليمن تثبت أرض سبأ وحضارة سبأ في مشرق اليمن، وأن منطقة مارب شهدت حضارة سبئية راقية في القرن العاشر قبل الميلاد، وهو القرن الذي عاش فيه النبي سليمان عليه السلام، بل إن أحدث الدلائل الأثرية تشير إلى حياة مدنية تقوم على نظام الري منذ الألف الثالث قبل الميلاد، وحينما يولي المرء وجهه في منطقة مارب اليوم يجد أثراً ما لسبأ أو نقشاً يذكر اسم سبأ أو قبيلة سبأ أو ملك سبأ. بينما لم يُعْثر- فيما نعلم- على أي أثر في شمال غر�� الجزيرة من مطلع الألف الأول قبل بالميلاد يمكن أن يُومِئ إلى حضارة راقية أو إلى مملكة سبئية أخرى. وإن كان قد عثر على آثار معينية ولحيانية وغيرها في تلك المناطق خاصةً في العلا (ددان القديمة)كما أن الجهود الأثرية في الحبشة لم تسفر عن اكتشاف حضارة راقية هناك يعود تاريخها إلى القرن العاشر قبل الميلاد. وتفيد المعلومات الأثرية أن أقدم النقوش التي عثر عليها في الحبشة هي سبئية ومكتوبة بخط المسند؛ مما يرجح القول إن أصحابها كانوا يقتفون آثار حاضرة سبأ في اليمن، وأنَّ منشأ حضارة أكسوم الحبشة هو وجود سبئي هناك بسبب الغزو أو التجارة أو الهجرة أو بسببها مجتمعة. وقد نقل السبئيون معهم الكثير من عناصر حضارتهم كاللغة والخط والدين والفن وغيرها. كما نقلوا أيضاً ملاحمهم وأخبارهم وقصصهم في الوطن الأم، ومن ذلك قصة المرأة السبئية التي كانت تملك سبأ وطريق اللبان التجاري الذي يمتد من ميناء قنا على البحر العربي غبر العاصمة مارب إلى غزة ميناء فلسطين على البحر المتوسط. ونقلوا كذلك قصة زيارتها للنبي سليمان في بيت المقدس وإسلامها على يده. وأصبحت هذه القصة تراثا مشتركاً بين الناس في جزيرة العرب وخارجها، ولكنها بقيت حية في موروث أهل اليمن أكثر من غيرهم ورمزاً تاريخياً لحضارتهم القديمة. كما ينسبون إلى تلك الملكة واسمها بلقيس عدداً من آثار مارب الرائعة فيقولون (عرش بلقيس) و(محرم بلقيس) وهكذا، ويتخذون من اسمها اسماً لبناتهم ومنشآتهم، بل ويزينون به إبداعاتهم الفنية والأدبية .

He and his allies want to enslave people to attain wealth and power. [...] the Nome King enjoys keeping surface-dwellers as slaves—not for their labor but simply to have them. [...] The Nomes' greatest fear are eggs. Sally Roesch Wagner, in her pamphlet The Wonderful Mother of Oz suggests that Matilda Joslyn Gage had made Baum aware that the egg is an important symbol of matriarchy, and that it is this that the Nomes, among whom no females are seen in any canonical text,[4] actually fear.

getting a bit bioessentialist towards the end there but the behaviors between the two characters are very similar, even though the nome king is also similar to lorraine, but again, the parallels arent meant to be literal all the time.

Princess Langwidere (a pun on the term "languid air", as enabled by her wealthy status and lazy carefree manner) appears in Baum's third Oz book Ozma of Oz (1907) as a secondary villain. She is the vain and spoiled princess whom Dorothy and her company encounter when she visits the Land of Ev which neighbors Oz. Langwidere has a collection of 30 exchangeable heads she keeps in a cabinet constructed of solid gold and studded with gems.[...] Langwidere has a meek-natured dutiful maid named Nanda. Upon spotting Nanda going about her duties around the castle, the Hungry Tiger regards her as exceptionally tasty-looking and eagerly requests her permission to eat her; being denied this privilege, he instead asks Nanda to whip up a sumptuous beef-and-potatoes feast for him, which she shakily agrees to, as her doing so will mean that she will both escape undevoured and temporarily take the edge off the Tiger's voracious appetite.

i see this in the linda commune, where saint linda surrounds herself with the "heads" of other abused women to prop herself up as the sovereign, even though shes the one that groomed nadine/dot. each head extends from saint linda like a hydra, parroting sanctimonious bullshit that, in the end, just reveals the extent of linda's duplicity rather than providing dot with catharsis. the part at the end with the made is very reminiscent of that too (nadine/nanda?). im mostly basing all of this off of the movie rather than the source text since im aware langwidere & mombi were different ppl, but the combination of the two makes the comparisons more convenient & consistent. i think its also worth noting that yes, the lindas all wearing green echoes lorne malvo's riddle about shades of green from season 1, but it also gives off the idea that the commune was emerald city, and, because there was no catharsis found, that the idea of utopia in the real world is not realistic, microcosmic or otherwise. the only real "utopian" ideals we can uphold are that of self-respect, love, and community.
