Okay, I've got like 5 episodes left but I am so impressed with Star Trek Prodigy. I really didn't think I was gonna like it because it's just hard for me to get into animation. IDK why. It's some sort of mental block. But, it's actually great. The storytelling is so strong. They have a perfect balance of arc/one off episodes.
And the animation is gorgeous. Because it's animation and not meant to be a comedy like Lower Decks (love you too LD <3) they make everything so pretty. The new planets. The nebulas. The ships. Even the characters. Dal is just a beautiful looking character. I love the purple and the spots around his eyes.
I love that a Medusan is one of the main characters. Since Is There in Truth No Beauty? is one of my favorite TOS episodes. And Zero is such a great character. I love them.
I have no attachment to Voyager but I do appreciate the characters being there. It doesn't feel forced. They found an organic story to work Janeway, Chakotay, and The Doctor in. God help me, they even Made Wesley Crusher cool!
All this to say, I'm now just as pissed as the rest of you that this got canned after only two seasons! I demand more Prodigy.

I think Tendi and Rok-Tahk would get along really well because both can relate to the pressure of having to be mean and tough when all they wanna do is be nice and do science stuff.

refracted light - by delightwrites
"It's easy to forget where their body ends and the rest of the world begins, as if they don't quite fit in it yet. And it's deceivingly easy to forget where the edge of the bunk they share with Gwyn on the Infinity is and where the rest of the room starts and Zero remembers this only when they're falling, the pull of gravity much stronger than their still sluggish reflexes.
They fall, not on the hard floor between their bunk and Rok's, but landing on something soft instead. Something soft that groans and kicks them in the shin."

I just wish I had characters like Rok-Tahk on TV when I was a chubby kid as tall as kids two years older than me. She’s so cute and she’s so sweet and she’s so lovable and she’s so BIG. And it’s OKAY. It doesn’t change how gentle and endearing she is or how the others see her, or Gwyn’s protective instinct towards her as a younger girl.
And now the show is gone and I guess big girls today won’t see that either. 😑

A Special Birthday
[dedicated to my dad for his birthday]
Chakotay's thoughts were preoccupied, wondering what the Doctor wanted to talk to him about on the holodeck. He stepped inside, his breath catching in his lungs when he saw the space. Someone had put in a program for a party, complete with the smells of all his favorite foods. The decorations were all pieces of artwork; he couldn't help smiling noticing the childlike nature of the sketches.
Stretched across the room were the words “Happy Birthday Captain Chakotay!”
And there waiting to greet him were the kids: Dal, Gwyn, Rok-Tahk, Jankom, Zero, Murf, and Maj'el. They were dressed in formal Starfleet attire, with Dal already fidgeting. Staring at them, Chakotay felt a mixture of amusement and surprise.
“What's all this?”
“We heard it was your birthday, and we wanted to celebrate!” Rok-Tahk answered.
Chakotay hadn't even thought of his birthday. He spent so many years alone that there'd been no reason to celebrate. It probably shouldn't have surprised him that the kids put all this together. It wouldn't be the first time they pulled him out of his solitude. He stepped a little farther into the room. The kids probably asked Kathryn for help on the food and decorations, and got the Doctor to lure him here.
“Voyager has this huge celebration later,” Dal spoke up, “but we wanted to do something just with us.”
“Oh?” Chakotay turned his attention to the teen. “Why's that?”
“Well... you know...” Dal rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
“Because,” Gwyn interjected, “you mean a lot to us, Chakotay. “Without you, none of us would be here.”
“I could say the same about you,” he returned, feeling his eyes getting misty. “You saved me just as much as I saved you.”
“Jankom couldn't have said it better!”
The kids crowded in, all trying to hug him at once. Even Maj'el stood close, resting a hand on Chakotay's arm. A lump formed in his throat that he couldn't swallow down. He loved the Voyager crew like family, but it felt different with these kids.
They impacted each other's lives, gave hope in a hopeless situation, saved each other. They were crew together for a short time, but they would always be his and he would always be theirs.
“Thank you,” he managed. He cleared his throat. “Now, let's eat before Murf gets it all!”
The kids laughed and cheered, chatting among themselves as they divided up the food. Chakotay listened to them contently, feeling like this was the best birthday he had in a long time.

Trektober day 2: The Forest Nebula
(prompt: nebula)
“The Forest Nebula is said to be the most beautiful nebula in the known universe,” the lecturer said.
An image flashed up on screen, and the whole group of cadets gasped, Rok and Dal included. Even in a class where they had seen countless examples of stellar phenomena, the Forest Nebula had a vibrancy and symmetry that made it stand out.
“I’m afraid a heavily processed and edited image like this is all any of us will ever be able to see of it, however,” the lecturer continued. “Up close, the frequencies of light and radiation emitted by the Forest Nebula would instantly blind any humanoid – perhaps any corporeal being with an eye capable of seeing it – even from behind multiple layers of protective glass. It renders very poorly on viewscreens. Spaceships passing by are advised to black out any windows, to avoid their crew falling to the temptation to look. Thankfully, the nebula is not very bright, so the danger is confined to a relatively limited area of space.”
He glanced up at the clock. “And that’s our time up for today, cadets. Just let the Forest Nebula stand as a reminder to you that sometimes the most beautiful things can also be the most dangerous.”
Dal nudged Rok with an elbow as they left the lecture hall. “Remind you of anyone?” he said.
But Rok was frowning. “It’s not even that far away,” she said.
“And?” Dal asked. “It’s not like you can look at it!”
“No,” Rok said. “ I can’t…”
~
The shuttlecraft hovered in space, all windows tinted an opaque black. Five Starfleet cadets sat inside, dutifully gathering the astrometric data that had allowed them to justify the trip. There wasn’t much space, but as close friends, they didn’t mind.
One Starfleet cadet, however, sat on top of the shuttlecraft, attached by a strong tether, their face – or the opening of their containment suit, anyway – angled towards the nebula like a flower pointing towards the sun.
“I wish you could all see,” Zero said through the comm link to their friends. “It’s wonderful. Oh, it’s so, so wonderful.”
“We don’t need to see it, Zee,” Dal said.
“Yeah,” Rok said, an enormous smile on her face. “I just like knowing that there’s someone who can appreciate how beautiful it is.”

Followup to this painting: [Oh You Poor Thing]
The Prodigy kids are so interesting to learn to draw. They have quite complicated color pallettes and designs that don't trivially translate to a 2D cartoon, and figuring out where to simply things without them being unrecognizable was an interesting challenge. I went for something close to the Lower Decks style this time (i.e., my usual Guzcomic style) to complete the crossover. If I ever made more Prodigy-focused comics I think I would first spend a lot of time coming up with a better simplification of their designs and color palletes. If there's one thing that the Prodigy kids absolutely have going for them, it's strong shape language in their silhouettes.
I really hope Prodigy gets picked up. I've been rewatching it and it's just so much fun.
Image ID: Digital art webcomic in a Star Trek Lower Decks like art style.
Panel 1: The alien kids from Star Trek Prodigy are wandering together in a crowd. Dal and Gwyn are calling out Murf's name. Gwyn has turned her liquid metal sword into a bullhorn. Zero says "Come out, come out, wherever you are!" Rok-Tahk says "Where are you..." Jankom, frustrated, says "Come on guys, it's no use. He's gone forever."
Panel 2: Eaurp Guz, a green slimegirl in a yellow starfleet engineering uniform, is running through the crowd with something wrapped up against her chest, holding it like a baby.
Guz: "Hello? Have you seen a--" Stranger 1: "No." Guz: "Have you seen a group of Mellan--" Stranger 2: "No thanks." Guz: "GRR! You'd think another Mellanoid Slime would stand out in the crowd." Guz: "Hello? Have you seen--" Stranger 3: "BEGONE FOUL THING!" Guz: "Ugh."
Panel 3: Guz continues. "Oh! you kids! Have you seen a Mellanoid Slime? Kinda like me. Gooey, sparkly, probably humanoid and bluish?
The Prodigy kids are gathered in a group and look at Guz, a little clueless. "Like Murf?" Dal says. "Who?" Guz says. The viewer can see Murf, the bluish-purple Mellanoid Slime Worm, being cradled by Guz, but the kids can't see him.
Panel 4 & 5: Close-up of the wrapped up Murf, who turns around, a little teary-eyed, and makes a chirp sound.
Panel 6: Murf leaps out of the wrapped blanket towards the kids, smiling, splashing some blue slime onto Guz's face, and she closes her eyes and braces for the goo to hit her. The kids look ecstatic. "MURF!" they all shout at once. Rok-Tahk goes on and says "I missed you." Jankom says, "Hah. Jankom never doubted a thing."
End Image ID.
extra:
Guz: so. you're. this slime worm's communal family.
Jankom: what of it, ya bag of snot?
Guz: do. do you even know how to raise a slime worm?
Dal: Yes! Well. Maybe. I mean he's basically indestructible, how hard could it be?
Rok-Tahk: Yeah! He once survived eating a live photon grenade.
Guz: What.
Dal: Yeah you know it was probably all the time he spent enslaved in the chimerium mines; hardened him up to it.
Guz: WHAT?
Gwyn: It's a long story.
Guz: wait. hey aren't you those wanted fugitives?
Jankom: Desperately, desperately wanted!
Zero: I can't read her thoughts but I do not think that's the kind of wanted she means.
Dal: Gotta blast!
