"Trumpeter, Raymond Harper attended the Alpha Boys School as a boy. As a pupil there, he taught younger pupil Bobby Ellis how to play.

There is a reference in a Gleaner advert that in 1959 he was playing in the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) Orchestra.

It is also known that at one stage Harper played in Coburn’s Orchestra at ‘The Bournemouth’ alongside Don Drummond, Tommy McCook and Roland Alphonso.

He went on to play with the Carib-Beats, and also became the no.1 choice of trumpeter for the records of Prince Buster. He can often be recognised on record by his use of vibrato."

Crikey! The start of July marked the 30th anniversary of the night The Bakesys supported legendary Jamaican ska pioneers The Skatalites at the Potsdam Ska Festival in Germany! It was one of our biggest & best gigs in front of over 1,000 ska crazy people from all over Europe. The hall was pretty empty when our set started as most of the crowd were outside enjoying the sunshine in the venue’s beer garden. But after a couple of songs it was jam packed & those assembled danced themselves silly to our wonky brand of high speed 2 tone. I was totally blown away by The Skatalites that night. At that time their line up still included Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, Lloyd Brevett, Lloyd Knibbs & Lester Sterling & despite the fact that is was a sweltering hot indoor gig they absolutely tore the place apart with a fiercely intense performance. It was one of the finest live sets I have ever witnessed. Great times indeed! Our set was actually filmed by a multi camera set up but we never saw the footage or even found out who filmed it. If anyone knows who did film the 1994 Potsdam Ska Festival please get in touch. We would love to see the footage if it still exists!
