TAGLIST
@louderfortheback
The next day.....................
After the Namor encounter, the Queen mother held an emergency council meeting with the tribe elders with M'baku as a notable attendee since his conversations with the late king caused him to embrace being part of the fold as well as loosening his reins a bit in terms of embracing technology.
'Princess, it is said that this ' Fishman' spoke something targeted at you, can you recall it?", the ape-man inquires.
"I couldn't really tell since it was in his dialect but his tone was of the Americas, ancient language.", you responded.
Listening to the concerns of the River Elder, he was quite baffled that someone can swim that distance and enter the country's territory undetected. All in the room knew that Namor is not a threat to be taken lightly and the solution to alleviate the problem, for now, was heavily guarded patrols with the Jabari volunteering to assist.
Once the meeting adjourned, you exited the throne room with your mind spinning on the recent turn of events so far. More importantly, the prophecy that centred on you and the male to be, most likely Namor. Your mother always phrased where the Air and water met a hurricane would occur. Ever since she told you of that dream, she would have you train so that you can hold your own. Even though, you've been blessed by the Wind Goddess didn't make your claim to be the Black Panther weak.
Mini time Skip to Shuri's Lair/ Lab
Hearing voices, you tuned your ear to recognized Shuri and Queen Mother's Voice.
"Have you made any progress in restoring the Herb", she asks or more scolds.
"It's still a work in progress mother", she responds stressed.
"Mother, please cut Shuri some slack. She's doing the best she can right now. She'll be successful, just give her time", you speak trying to restore your older sister's drive.
You couldn't help but think of Namor's words and what they could mean.
"I know your worried my child, but all will be well and dealt with," Ramonda says kindly
" Ma, I would like to believe that but with what was pre-ordained since my birth and with everything that's occurred it's really difficult to be reassuring.", you say worried
Ramonda is still a bit unnerved by Griot and she says that one day that AI tech would one day rule and enslave us all which made you laugh.
"Mother, the AI is not like in the movies. This program does exactly what I ask it to ", Shuri says quite proud of her creations. Her lab seemed to be quite cramped since she disassembled the Vibranium detector Namor brought and deduced that the person is a genius creating it out of spare parts and junk. Not long after Okoye entered the room, proposing that they go to America to track the scientist which would get your older sis out of the lab for some air. You also asked to accompany as well to assist in the search. Ramonda addled by the thought reluctantly agreed to her daughters' outing but asked Okoye to bring Ayo as an extra security measure. The royal siblings were out of Wakanda a few times for diplomatic reasons with their mother but this would be the few solo trips they had.
Mini time skip
After tracking down Agent Ross we were led to M.I.T to track down the scientist known as Riri Williams with all of you rocking some EPIC street wear
Side note: Reader-chan wears her komoyo beads on her left hand
You tag along with your older sis, to meet with the young female and to say that she was in shock was an understatement and it was made even worse when Okoye brought her spear into her room.
"Small, small girl. I'm going to give you two options. You can come to Wakanda conscious or UNCONSCIOUS.", the general demands.
" You need to be conscious of the way that you look walkin round here with all that ash on your head", Riri quips back. You both begin laughing at the epic clap back. After Riri decided to be on board, you'll headed to Riri's lab to pick up the machine blueprints. Shuri was impressed by Riri's smarts but it was interrupted by the sounds of police sirens.
"General Okoye, Ayo, Princesses Shuri and (Y/N) and Riri Williams please come out with your hands in the air", an officer enforces from the outside.
''Great this is just great! First, my machine gets stolen by the Government. Then I have a Fishman after me for something I didn't do and NOW THE FEDS ARE AFTER ME", Riri says distressed while burning her papers so they wouldn't be traced. Shuri devised a plan to escape and Riri decided to use her prototype ironman suit which has a notable heart shape for the arc reactor core. Knowing desperate times called for these measures, your wings would have to do. The feds busted into the darkened warehouse looking for everyone when Riri fired a repulsor blast and everyone made their escape
Wings sprouting from behind you, you took off in a gust of wind taking to the far reaches of the sky above. Your bracelet keeping track of everyone, and you would dive down to render assistance if necessary. You see Riri fly up to destroy a drone and as soon as she does she begins to crash land back to the ground below, so with hummingbird speed, you catch her and get her to safety but something snags your wings pulling you down causing Riri to fall. Suddenly a water explosion comes in from behind you sending you flying as well. Struggling to get up, you get to the car to see the state of Shuri, Okoye and Ayo. Griot states that they're alright and should be waking up but that moment is short-lived when a humpback whale rises from the water dropping a titan-like human with blue skin in front of you along with a female with the same skin and others like her but her head-dress was grand as well.
The others went to deal with the police and you decide to fight them head-on to give Okoye and Ayo time to join the fray.
" If you want them you have to go through me," you say brandishing your spear.
"Namora, xeen a lidiar yéetel u yala'ab.", the male says to the female who went to deal with the police with the other warriors who accompanied them.
Namora, go deal with the rest.
"K ilej bix kun chan ch'íich'o'. Yéetel ti' k'intaj, ma' a xot'aj xiik.'', he speaks in his ancient language.
Let's see how you fare little bird. Hopefully, I don't clip your wings.
Going in for the charge, you hit this man with everything you have. You think of your sister, her safety driving your fight that much harder. You couldn't deny that this hulk-like person was giving you a run for your money in terms of fighting. it doesn't take long until Okoye and Ayo assist and it was three against one but he was too strong. The police begin to shoot at the humanoids to slow them down, they fall but they end up rising like zombies.
"Yéetel tin k'ubaj le científico yéetel tuláakal lela' yaan u ts'o'oksik", he says menacingly.
Just hand over the scientist and this will all be over.
"Over my dead body", you say getting even angrier as the wind around you picks up. The warrior loses his footing but using his own spear stands his ground.
Okoye and Ayo use that wind to get the jump on the warrior and you go check on Shuri and Riri who are both awake. To your shock, you observe that giant best two of Wakanda's Greatest warriors.
"Griot can they hear me?", you ask the AI
"I can translate for you princess.", he responds.
"I'm Princess (Y/N) and I would like to speak with Namor. No harm will come to your people. My only request is that you let my sister and warriors return home.", you plead with the underwater individuals through your beads. You even take off your bracelet to show them that you mean no harm.
"Tene' le princesa (S leti' N) yéetel in gustaría tsikbal yéetel Namor.Mix loob yaan u taal ta kaajal. In chen j-na'akij jach u cha'ik u in kiik yéetel in guerreros suut tin wotoch.", the AI speaks in their dialect.
The two aquatic warriors look at each other with the giant walking towards you. He uncovers his face mask and presents it to your face..
Respirar", he says
You do as commanded and take a breath. Your vision fades slowly to black and all you can think about is your sister and hope that your mother doesn't get too worried and that she knows what you did was to protect them and hopefully broker peace and spare Riri.
NB- What's in blue is the Mayan Translation. if it's off tell me, hopefully, yall can link me to some good translation websites so it can be more authentic

Chapter 16
He didn’t have anything to offer her. All the gold and jewels he had, Wakanda had already bestowed it to her. He was incapable of giving the one thing she needed, comfort, he failed miserably at it. But there was something he could give her. He watched as she spoke to M’baku through her beads. “Is he taking you?”, the king asked. “Yes.”, she looked at him as he edged closer to listen to the conversation.
“Is fishman next to you?”, the next question. Fishman. Namor’s ears pricked as he scrunched his nose. A nickname worser than the other names he had received in all his life. “Yes he is.”, she replied.
“I want to speak to him.”, he instructed her. She held out her arm to him. His eyes trailed the length of glistening brown skin. “Yes.”, he answered, a sense of having bested him in the last fight worked it’s way into his tone.
“No funny games fishman.”, he said the name again, Namor grew irritated. “She needs to be back by tonight.”, the king lectured him. No one had lectured him in centuries.
“She will be back by tomorrow afternoon.”, he re-laid his point. There was silence, her brows furrowed together, trying to guess his game. He was confident of this strategy, he knew she would love this.
“My people will not take it as a good sign, if she were to come and leave so soon.”, for the first time he was bargaining selfishly, without a proper point to make. He tapped his foot, waiting for an answer. “Fine.”, M’baku accepted, he eased, a smile on his lips.
This was his game, his comfort zone. No one could out wit him yet. She wanted to figure it out, the thoughts running in his head as she resolved a battle within herself, on whether she could freely trust him again. Hiding away in her lab did no good, people knew where she was. So his offer had come at the right time. She was doing it for herself, to take a step back from responsibility.
His mannerisms had changed, he had always been self assured but now, he looked like he was on the run. He scanned the surrounding, making sure no one he knew was around. “Are we going to walk to the Atlantic?”, she asked. “No.”, he whispered.
“Why are we sneaking then?”, she lowered her voice. “Because we’re not going to Talokan.”, his eyes caught hers, a mischievous glint to it.
“What?”, she exclaimed. He shushed her, dropping to his knees to hide between foliage. “No one can know about this place. Not even my people.”, he spoke fast in hushed tones.
She continued to stand, unsure on how to interpret this change in demeanor. She wanted to laugh, he sounded like Tchalla, when he and Nakiya would play in the catacombs. His eyes widened as he observed something in the distance, his reflex, was to hold her hand and pull her towards himself. The reaction, was to do nothing but tumble into his arms.
He held her close, his hands tangled around her as he cradled her body, her hand over his chest, his heartbeat fast and thunderous. “My cousin.”, he sounded like a scared boy who was evading his parents. She waited as she watched Namora pass by with Ross chatting away by her side. She exhaled, Namora was too distracted to keep a look out for her brother.
He eased, laying his head on the stone as he closed his eyes. In the soft light that illuminated his face, she was so close she could touch the ornaments on his neck, she noticed the dark patches beneath his eyes, the dark spots on his cheek, the thick eyelashes that outlined his eyes. He looked brittle and breakable, tired just like her. His eyes slowly found hers, the tip of their noses almost touching each other. His eyes widened in the surprise of what he had done. He let her go, “I’m sorry princess.”, he helped her to her feet and moved away.
“This way.”, he beckoned her, towards the entry of a cove. His secret, that he hid so well. One he wanted to share with her, only her. He put away his mantle, a pin on all the problems he had to solve, on the world and the responsibilities that burdened his shoulders. He was a tour guide again, wanting to see her reaction when he unveiled another hidden world. His world, that he made for himself with the only intent being closer to Wakanda. Closer to her.
He navigated through a tight rock fissure and helped her through. The darkness illuminated with the same glow worms he had at home, their light helping him navigate to the opening. He stood in front of the entrance that leaked golden light from within. “Princess.”, he held out his hand, she paused but then took it, her eyes glowing the same way they did when he had taken her to his city.
He helped her up the steps into his hidden lair, if he could take her mind off the struggles around her, then his effort would have paid off. Materialistic things were of no value to her, even more so if they came from him. She wanted to return his mother’s bracelet, he understood she didn’t want any trace of him around her. So instead he could only curate these moments in time where she could feel free. A place to unburden herself. He would let her fly if he had to sink for it.
The cave was warm, filled with elements from his home. Carpets and slanted sofas, food on the table surrounded by warm light, the noise of the city and market place drowned out. But unlike his room in Talokan, this was filled with a mix of Wakandan artefacts and decorations as well. Paintings littered the walls, in a different art style, more modern like the graffiti’s that were around her city. This was his hideout. She felt calm, without the urge to look over her shoulder in the fear someone would call her to court or if W’Kabi would show up to demand she build weapons of war. He let her be as he moved away to a work desk, filled with tools and metal work.
This place mirrored her lab in terms of the same solace it provided to him. Some of the walls held books tucked into the crevice, there were instruments in the corner, paint bottles in some parts. Here he was just an individual, not an emperor or a godly entity. The carpets kept the floor warm, she moved around, investigating interesting objects that caught her eye. There was silence but it was shared as though a weight had been lifted off their chests.
“We were never meeting the court were we?”, she asked to which he chuckled. It sounded the same, as it was in her memory, one she would remember often.
“No”, he told her, quietly working away on something.

He's a Lego collection boy ok, just wanted to show it to her

2022 Reading Challenge Report
Creating this spread in my journal has become a highlight of my year. Past efforts are here: 2019, 2020, 2021. Each year I spend a little more time on my mini cover drawings and each year I'm a little happier with how they turned out.
My reading goal for the year was 100 books and I barely made it: 101. I had to really book it to reach my goal (heh, see what I did there)
Some years it's sort of hard to pick my "Best Books", but this year it was relatively easy. Eight books in particular really stood out. I could have just left it at eight, but there were two additional authors that I came across this year that I read several books by and am quite sure I will continue gobbling up their oeuvres as long as I can. (I've never in my life seen that word as a plural—can that be right?) So as a 9th pick, I just named them both: Ashley Herring Blake and Alexis Hall. I read several of Blake's books this year that would have absolutely changed my life if they'd been around when I was a kid/teen and Hall is here because literally everything he writes is fucking hilarious.

Read 25 Books by Black Women Authors: Only read 23
I think next year I won't do the Black Women Authors challenge. I hope I will still read as many or at least a significant number of books by Black women, and I think it's a really great idea. I'm going to resist doing it this year, though, because I noticed a crummy impulse in myself as I was keeping track of the books, like I was "getting credit" for reading books in this category and that feels kinda gross. We'll see how I do without striving for a cookie.
I would like to read more picture books in 2023, and maybe be a little choosier about the graphic novels I read. I really love graphic novels, but I read some clunkers this year. I was also pretty light on nonfiction and I'd like to read a little more this year. In any case, I know it will be another great year of reading! See you next year!

Honored to have my #NewYearsResolution included in a feature in #OfCounsel Magazine! "Another personal resolution that carries firm-wide repercussions comes from the Detroit offices of the international law firm Clark Hill Law by marketing director Roy Sexton, who also serves as the 2023 president of the Legal Marketing Association - LMA International. 'My New Year’s resolution,' he says, 'is to keep elevating the level of discourse intellectually where legal marketing is concerned, to learn and share best practices from other industries, and to move us all forward in terms of more sophisticated ways of doing this work.'” Thank you, dear pal Ross Fishman, for the opportunity. AND kudos, Ross, for the magazine excerpting your "Ultimate Law Firm Partner’s Marketing Checklist" book, one section at a time. One Piece Birthdays: Honorable Mentions
One Piece has hundreds of characters, and over the past year I’ve celebrated the birthdays of only about a few hundred or so of them. So I’d like to take the time to mention every One Piece character without a birthday. Some don’t have birthdays because they’ve debuted too recently, some have no birthdays because they have been forgotten. Some have no birthdays because we haven’t gotten to that yet, even though they’ve existed for a long time and we remember them. To start off with, I will mention every character that exists within the canon that have names. Some you’ll remember. Some you won’t recognize, but if I showed you a picture of them you’d be like “Oh yeah that guy”. And then some of them you won’t have any recollection of, and I can’t blame you for it. Today, we will honor your memories, and hope that one day, Eiichiro Oda gives you a birthday.

I used the names that they are given on the wiki, as opposed to their Official English names, if they even have one. I did this so that you can simply search their names on the One Piece Wiki and learn about them, if any interest you. However, a couple of them are so obscure that they don’t even have their own pages, in which case you will only be able to fine them here.
Next we will honor all non-canon characters. These characters appeared in filler, movies, specials, OVAs, one-shots, video games, or any other material that was officially made but not part of the manga. These characters are gaurunteed to never get a birthday, and that is a curse they bear. Now some non-canon characters, such as Gion and Tokikake, debut in non-canon and then later appear in canon, making them canon characters, and thus giving them a chance to have a birthday. However, this is such a rare case, that I wouldn’t count on it, especially for non-canon characters that debuted years ago.

Lastly, I want to honor all characters, canon and non-canon, with no names. The majority of these characters are just extras that only appeared in one panel or shot. But there’s a couple that are actually memorable, such as that one guy that was in Spandine’s group, or the masked CP-0 members. Some of these people can actually get names eventually. For example, Don Quixote Mjosgard was a nameless character for the longest time, until in the Reverie he became important and was given a name. I cannot list these nameless characters, as they have no names, but I do still want to honor them, and hope that one day they will be given names and have birthdays.

This Week in Caps: Personnel
Welcome to This Week in Caps, a weekly newsletter where I recap everything important that’s been going on in the world of the Washington Capitals this past week. This week I’m continuing on introductory material, and today’s post will feature and recap coaches, broadcasters, and everyone else important to the Capitals.
Coaches
Todd Reirden
Head coach of the Washington Capitals. This is his first year as head coach, replacing Barry Trotz. He served as associate coach from 2016 to 2018, and as assistant coach from 2014 to 2016, specializing in defense and with working the defensemen. Before that, he spent four years on Pittsburgh’s coaching staff. Before that, he joined the organization at the AHL level at 2008 as an assist for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and spent two seasons as their head coach.
Blaine Forsythe
Assistant coach for the Capitals. He’s been a part of the organization since the 2006-07 season, and has been assistant coach since 2009-10. He specializes in the power play and centers. Previously, he has worked for the Calgary Hitmen (WHL), and has a business degree from the University of Minnesota. And he is definitely not a robot.
Scott Arniel
Assistant coach for the Capitals. A new hire this offseason, Arniel will work specially with the wingers and on the penalty kill. Arniel spent the previous five seasons as an associate coach for the New York Rangers, was the head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2010-2012, and spent five seasons as a head coach in the American Hockey League.
Reid Cashman
Assistant coach for the Capitals. A new hire this offseason, Cashman will work specially with the defensemen. Cashman spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach with the Hershey Bears, and before that had a long tenure as a coach at Quinnipiac University.
Scott Murray
Goaltending coach for the Capitals. He has been the primary goalie coach since 2017 when Mitch Korn stepped back his role, and he has been in the Capitals organization working with the Hershey Bears and the Capitals since 2013.
Brett Leonhardt
Video coach for the Capitals. The man nicknamed “Stretch” has been a member of the Caps organization for a long time; from 2007 to 2011, he worked as the team’s web and video producer. Then he worked in Toronto NHL’s video manager for hockey operations, and then returned to the Capitals in 2012, and has been working as video coach ever since. He has been the Caps emergency backup goalie in the past, and a few times has actually had to suit up. You may also know him as the man who made the Stanley Cup into a giant margarita.
Tim Ohashi
Video analyst for the Capitals. This season will be his third as an analyst; he previously worked as a coaching staff intern. He is a native of Bethesda, MD and grew up a Capitals fan. He received his master’s in Sports Industry Management from Georgetown University.
Front Office and Ownership
Brian MacLellan
General Manager and Senior Vice President of the Capitals. Has been in this position since the 2014-15 season after being a fixture of the organization in various scouting and front office roles for the past 13 years. Was also a former NHL player.
Ross Mahoney
Assistant General Manager of the Capitals. Entering his fourth season AGM. He served as the Caps' director of amateur scouting for the previous 16 seasons. He oversees the club's developmental programs and the organization's amateur scouting staff.
Don Fishman
Assistant General Manager and Director of Legal Affairs of the Capitals. 13th season with the Capitals and ninth as assistant general manager and director of legal affairs. In this role, he handles player contract negotiations, player contract research and analysis, the club's day-to-day salary cap position, team salary cap strategic planning, the salary arbitration process, and more.
Ownership
Monumental Sports and Entertainment is the company that owns the Capitals. They also own the Washington Wizards (NBA), Washington Mystics (WNBA), Washington Valor (AFL), Baltimore Brigade (AFL), and Capital City Go-Go (NBA G-League). They run Monumental Sports Network, a platform that broadcasts local sports games and provides additional content for all their sports teams. MSE also owns Capital One Arena and manages Medstar Capitals Iceplex and Eaglebank Arena (Fairfax, VA).
Ted Leonsis
The chairman of Monumental Sports and Entertainment and principal owner of the Washington Capitals. He bought the team in 1999 and completely revitalized the franchise. He was instrumental in drafting and caring for Alex Ovechkin. Leonsis and his family has been pretty involved in the success of the franchise and making Capitals games and subsequent entertainment an enjoyable experience.
Dick Patrick
Vice Chairman, Chief Operating Officer and Capitals President. He has been part of the Washington Capitals organization since 1982 and was one of Ted Leonsis' original partners when Monumental Sports & Entertainment was formed in June 2010. Mr. Patrick is president of the Capitals and vice chairman of Monumental Sports & Entertainment.

Broadcasters
NBC Sports Washington
NBC Sports Washington is the regional network that broadcasts Capitals games. You can catch the games on TV or streaming online through their website if you have a cable subscription to the channel. They also have a lot of content online, including videos, interviews, and articles.
Joe Beninati (“Joe B”)
The TV play-by-play commentator for the Capitals. He is a longtime sports announcer, and he has been announcing Capitals games since 1994. He also will occasionally do play-by-play for other sports, including lacrosse and other college sports, during the offseason. Joe B is synonymous with Caps games, and is one of the best in the business. He has won D.C. Sportscaster of the Year multiple times, and has won 12 Capital Emmy Awards. He will also appear at Capitals events, visit as a guest analyst on TV on occasion, and moderate events such as the Stanley Cup parade.
Craig “Locker” Laughlin
The TV color commentator/analyst for the Capitals. He has been announcing Capitals games since 1990, and he and Beninati are the longest-running TV duo in the NHL. Laughlin is a former NHL player, and played for the Capitals from 1982 to 1988 and was part of the group that brought the Caps to their first playoff appearance. Laughlin is very involved in Capitals media content, appears in analytical roles on TV and online, and he is involved in Capitals alumni events and charity work in the area. His daughter, Courtney Laughlin, also works for the Capitals and does analysis for the Capitals on TV and online.
Alan May
Studio analyst for the Capitals on NBC Sports Washington. Mostly he works and does analysis in studio, but occasionally he will work as the between-the-benches reporter for Capitals games. A former NHL player, he played for the Capitals from 1989 to 1994. He has two distinctions as a player: in his career, he was traded at the trade deadline four times, which stood as an NHL record until it was met by Thomas Vanek in 2018; he also ranks fourth all-time on the Capitals franchise PIMs list.
“Smokin” Al Koken
Longtime reporter and host for the Capitals. During games, he will make reports, wander around the arena, and interview players during intermission. Has been covering D.C. sports and the Capitals since 1974, when the Capitals first came into existence.
Rob Carlin
Anchor, host, and reporter for the Capitals and NBC Sports Washington. Hosts pregame and postgame content along with hosting multitudes of other media content for the team. Most of the time appears onscreen alongside with Alan May.
Caps Radio 24/7 (Broadcasted locally on 106.7 The Fan)
John Walton
The play-by-play commentator for the Capitals on the radio. The radio voice of the Capitals since 2013. Walton does a phenomenal job on the radio, and has done other radio work in the past, along with doing TV play-by-play for women’s hockey at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Walton also does some reporting, announcing, and emceeing work for the Capitals, particularly at Capitals events. He also co-hosts “Two Man Update with reporter Mike Vogel where they give updates on the Capitals and preview upcoming matchups and games.
Beat Reporters
Isabelle Khurshudyan
Capitals beat reporter for the Washington Post. She live tweets games, writes amazing articles, and provides updates on the team that you can’t get anywhere else. She is my number-one, top source for Caps updates and coverage and even if you don’t get the Washington Post, I recommend following her twitter immediately, it’s a vital follow. Fun fact: Isabelle speaks Russian, thus a lot of her stories feature great content from Russian players that you definitely wouldn’t be able to get otherwise.
Mike Vogel
Capitals reporter; he works for Monumental Sports Network, the company that owns the Capitals, so the Caps utilize him for a lot of content. He writes stories, articles, and game updates that go on the Monumental website and the NHL website. He also interviews players for Rinkside Update videos, and he co-hosts “Two Man Update” with radio announcer John Walton where they give updates on the Capitals and preview upcoming matchups and games. He also provides in-game updates on his twitter and is another vital source of Capitals information.
Chris Kuc
Capitals beat reporter for The Athletic. He was just hired this offseason as The Athletic expanded to DC, so he’s new on the beat. I don’t know a lot about him, but in all likelihood he’s going to provide Capitals updates and write about them, so let’s see how he does this upcoming season.
Other Important People
Wes Johnson
The PA announcer for Capitals games at Capital One Arena. Super good at getting the fans hype and making Capitals games a fun experience. Also does voiceover for Capitals media and hosts Capitals events.
Horn Guy
youtube
Actually named Sam Wolk; a fan who sits inside the arena for home games. He has a horn and uses the horn blasts to start the “Let’s Go Caps” chant.
T-Shirt Guy
Actually named Charlie McManus; a fan who makes customized homemade shirts featuring Caps players faces, and they are amazing. He can be seen at Caps home games and events and featured on social media wearing his unique apparel.
Red Man
A fan who paints his entire body red for Caps games. He can be seen around at home games.
Ovie the Bulldog
A bulldog named after Alex Ovechkin. Originally from the Maryland area and now in Southern California, this dog is by far the best part of Caps fandom.
Up next: a complete recap and summary of the Caps preseason!

American Jail (2018) directed by Roger Ross Williams
[D]irector Roger Ross Williams’ next film “American Jail” is turning its attention to the U.S. prison system. CNN released the first look at the upcoming film, which will examine the individuals and entities that benefit from the existing framework and will see Williams traveling outside the U.S. for potential solutions to the problem. (Source: IndieWire)
Why Journalists Should Cover Local Jails
Journalists can turn to the Fines and Fees Justice Center for news about local and state incarceration fees. The National Center for State Courts also has a 2017 deep study on fines and bond trends in state courts.
On July 1, CNN will air a special documentary called "American Jail" by Academy Award-winning director Roger Ross Williams. The film asks the basic question of whether jails are doing anything positive for society. The film also includes our seminar expert Nancy Fishman. (See the trailer here.) ails are expensive. "The annual cost, per incarcerated individual, averaged $47,057 in the 35 jurisdictions that responded," Vera's survey shows.
Poynter's "Covering Jails" workshops are funded by a grant from the MacArthur Foundation's Safety and Justice program. The same funder is helping 20 communities around the country innovate jail reform. Philadelphia, for example, is one of those communities that got $3.5 million in MacArthur funds to renovate its jail system. As a result, MacArthur said, "the Philadelphia Department of Prisons announced plans to close the House of Correction, the oldest operating jail in the City of Philadelphia, citing a 32 percent decrease of the city’s incarcerated population since July 2015."

Dylan at Eighty
Bob Dylan, the greatest songwriter of his era, turns eighty on Monday. A dominant presence for over sixty years, Dylan has made an indelible mark on the history of rock and roll, in part by not treating age and longevity like most here-and-gone performers. The New Yorker has covered him from the start. This week, as a birthday celebration, we’re highlighting a selection of pieces celebrating the musician and his virtuosity. In “The Crackin’, Shakin’, Breakin’ Sounds,” from 1964, Nat Hentoff visits Dylan in the studio and catches the artist in the first stages of his meteoric recording career. (“Wiry, tense, and boyish, Dylan looks and acts like a fusion of Huck Finn and a young Woody Guthrie. Both onstage and off, he appears to be just barely able to contain his prodigious energy.”) In “The Wanderer,” Alex Ross follows Dylan on the road during his Never Ending Tour, which has defined the most recent decades of his seminal performances. (“It’s hard to pin down what he does: he is a composer and a performer at once, and his shows cause his songs to mutate, so that no definitive or ideal version exists. Dylan’s legacy will be the sum of thousands of performances, over many decades.”) In “Bob Dylan’s ‘Rough and Rowdy Ways’ Hits Hard,” Amanda Petrusich argues that the musician’s most recent album, his first of original songs in eight years, is remarkably attuned to the cultural moment. In “Never Ending Bob Dylan,” Howard Fishman recalls how he became a Dylan zealot in his teens. Finally, in “Bob on Bob,” Louis Menand examines the evolution of Dylan’s musical style—from protest songs to popular music. This weekend, sit back and explore our catalogue of stories about this iconic artist.
—David Remnick, The New Yorker
