Italy Refuses Munich Museum’s Request to Return Ancient Roman Statue Bought by Hitler

Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano has said that the Discobolus Lancellotti, a sculpture bought by Adolf Hitler and returned to Italy after World War II, should not be returned to Germany as it is a national treasure, amid a diplomatic dispute over who is the rightful owner of the statue.

The statue is perhaps the best-known copy of a bronze sculpture by Athenian artist Myron made between 460–450 B.C. The original is now lost, but the copy is believed to have been made between 100-200 A.D. At least five other copies are known to have been made over time.

Sangiuliano’s comments came after the National Roman Museum director Stéphan Verger requested that a marble base for the statue, created in the 1600s, be returned from the collection of the Staatliche Antikensammlungen, the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported.

But Florian S. Knauss, the director of the Glyptothek, the section of the Staatliche Antikensammlungen that houses Greek and Roman antiquities, instead allegedly then asked Italy to return the statue, according to Corriere della Sera.

The work was found in 1781 on the Esquiline Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome, and sold to Nazi Germany in 1938 for 5 million lira (about $5.7 million when adjusted for inflation) with the support of Benito Mussolini, the Italian dictator and founder of fascism. It was given by Hitler to a museum in Munich and displayed there until November 1948, when it was returned to Italy.

“The request from the Munich Glyptothek to have the Discobolus Lancellotti back is as absurd as it is inadmissible,” Sangiuliano said in a statement on Twitter. “It was tied up and was exported illicitly as a result of an unholy pact between the Nazis and fascists. Thanks to the Americans for giving it back to us.”

Sangiuliano also suggested his German counterpart, culture minister Claudia Roth, “knows nothing about this,” and that the conflict could be resolved at a diplomatic level.

“And I am sure that the cooperation between Germany and Italy, which is already excellent in so many fields, will improve even more in the future in the cultural field as well,” Sangiuliano said. Still, Germany “must go over my dead body” to get the sculpture back, he added.

The Italian newspaper called the standoff a “risky chapter” for Italy and Germany, noting that discussing the sculpture highlights the “tragic relationship between fascism and Nazism.”

“I am not in a position to abandon our legal claim of a return of the Discobolus to our museum,” Knauss said in his response. “The sculpture was legally acquired by the German state after being offered to the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The Italian institutions in power at the time agreed to the export.”

Raven being Desi

Hello, hello again, I'm back with another tirade! This whole thing started with seeing a fanartist post a drawing of Raven (a DC Teen Titans character created by George Perez) as dark skinned with a Desi associated hooked nose. One commentor began to complain saying 'Raven isn't a dark skinned Indian, she isn't Indian at all'. When the artist pointed out that they were referring to the fact that Raven's original design was based of an Indian model, the astute commentor acknowledged that Ravens 'style' was Indian but was influenced by other models of other nationalities as well, so lets break it down.

Raven's style

I assume you're talking about the red dot on her forehead. It's called a Bindi and it's not a part of Indian culture, it's a part of Hindu culture. Traditionally, the west has not cared about the difference, assuming any part of Hinduism is just spiritual hokum and using it in art and pop culture without consideration. But no, the Bindi is worn by Hindu women and yes, it is cultural appropriation for the Bindi to be worn by non-Hindus for aesthetic. More of Raven's character involves Hinduism too. Meditation, and chakras also frequently appear in Raven's magic and were also Hindu practices. Then there is the topic of Ravens model.

Her name was Persis Khambatta. She won Miss India and is the model that George Perez named as the original influence for Raven's character design. But that isn't definitive, I hear you cry. White people can be Hindu too! And the same quote that lists Persis as an influence also lists a Fran MacGregor as a later influence! And that is true, but also like...

That, dear reader, is Raven in New Teen Titans wearing a Sari, which is one of the traditional styles of clothing for Indian women. All of this combined methinks makes Raven being Desi a pretty decent possibility, right? Well, apparently not, according to some people on Reddit, since there is still the issue of

Raven's Ancestry

Raven's mom is white. She Elizabeth Roth, by both her Germanic last name and her blonde haired character design, is definitely one white lady. And Raven's father is Trigon, aka the devil from the bible. And like, there is no way that there is a historical precedent of Christianity associating Hindu culture with evil (just ignore Indiana Jones the Temple of Doom and the demonisation of Kali and Lord Sheev from Star Trek and Lady fucking Shiva and that time Tim Drake fought an actual Indian god for some fucking reason). I mean there is no way that the bible says anything negative about 'Idol worship' (cough cough Romans 1:21–23, Exodus 20:3–6, 1 Corinthians 10:14 cough). Is it really that much of a stretch to say that the devil, as far as DC is concerned, may have some Indian traits. Or that Raven's home of Azarath, steeped in spiritualism and mysticism and definitely-not-Hinduism, may have had some Indian culture there too? But I feel like all this pedantic behavior is kind of missing the point.

What is the point of representation anyway?

Why does Raven being Indian coded matter?

Well, it matters because if we include her in the Indian coded bucket, there is a total of 4 desi coded characters in DC, three of those 4 being the Al Ghul family. The sum total of all actual canonical Desi characters in both DC and Marvel combined, is one. Just one. Kamala Khan from the Marvel universe.

Representation, specifically changing the ethnicity of pre-existing characters in later adaptations is done to better reflect the audience diaspora, so that the audience can see themselves in those character. Little Desi girls want to believe that they can be superheroes, just like anybody else. And if we don't have that in cannon, we will make it in fannon.

Zatanna Zatara, or simply Zee, is one of the Homo Magi, a subspecies of Homo Sapiens descended from ancient hybrids of humans and beings from the fifth dimension (or higher). Zee herself is the heir to Giovanni “Gianni” Zatara of the House Zatara, as well as Sindella Di Inferno, the daughter of King Inferno, two of Italy’s last great magical houses stretching back to Roman Empire and through Leonardo da Vinci himself into the modern day.

Growing up internationally as her father took to world traveling--both as an adventurer and master of the mystic arts--Zatanna encountered all manner of strange beings not unlike herself. These early encounters--Jason Blood, Doctors Isley and Holland, Detective Chimp, The Nightmare Nurse, Ariella Roth, and Elizabeth Lavenza--would come to be much of the back bone of the Justice League’s Dark Division, a sub-team devoted entirely to mystical threats. Diana herself would spend quite a bit of her time with this group, though she deferred to Zee’s knowledge and raw mystical power in most regards.

After this period of travel, Zatanna never truly settled down, though she maintained residences in Jump City, London, Gotham, Metropolis, as well as rooms in the House of Mystery and the Tower of Fate. One of the few people from this realm who Kent Nelson was known to have tolerated in the Tower without his direct supervision, Zatanna often found herself assisting Khalid Nassour with its upkeep when Nabu was unhelpful or actively antagonistic to the young doctor--a frequent occurrence for some years as the Helm’s sentient aspects underwent an unusually prolonged period of grief following Nelson’s eventual passing.

Perhaps most significantly, Zatanna is one of the few Diana trusts with secret of Perpetua and her eternal bondage between Paradise Island. Along with six others, these Seven Soldiers maintain no formal relationship between them, but are tasked individually with protecting the world from any threat past or future, borne of realms beyond their own.

Zatanna herself keeps two regular assistants: her protege, Misty Kilgore, and her stagehand/pet/bodyguard, Rodney the Rabbit, a being from another universe who claims to be the old cartoon and comics character Captain Carrot.
