TDP 1239: REVIEW - The Roy Huddlines
review
A News Huddlines reunion celebrating the life and comedy of Roy Hudd OBE.
The Roy Huddlines was staged on Sunday 14th May 2023 at the Sondheim Theatre in London’s West End. The cast, writers and producers of BBC Radio's longest-running audience comedy programme, The News Huddlines, gathered to celebrate the life, love and laughter of Roy Hudd OBE.
Roy had a profound effect on all who worked with him - he was a unique combination of comedy genius, wise mentor and cheeky uncle. The cast reunited here for one joyous hurrah in his honour are Huddlines originals Chris Emmett, Alison Steadman, Nichola McAuliffe and announcer Richard Clegg, plus Kate Harbour and the brilliant Jon Culshaw who took Roy's centre microphone with the blessing of Roy’s widow, Debbie Hudd.
Also assembled for this gala event were the writers who cut their comedy teeth working on The News Huddlines and went on to create some of the finest British comedy from the 1980s to the present day. Not the Nine O'Clock News, Spitting Image, Drop the Dead Donkey and One Foot in the Grave were all created by Huddlines alumni, and the legacy continues.

Film 205 of the year: UP THE CHASTITY BELT, 1971. From a time when Britain only had a handful of big tv stars, who were all guaranteed steady work come what may, we have this mostly predictable bawdy comedy, starring Frankie Howerd - a man who was launched into tv and film thanks to his huge popularity as a radio star. He'd had a successful tv series, called 'Up Pompeii' (which name was inspired, I think, by a jazz standard called 'Up London'); the tv series spawned a film, which spawned two sequels: this offering, and the equally bizarrely named 'Up The Front'; the film series then joined up with the much more successful 'Carry On' series, to give us 'Carry On Up The Jungle'. None of these films are great; a couple of them are worth watching. 'Chastity Belt' isn't really a sex-comedy, it's a comedy filled with ribald jokes - of varying quality. Howerd plays a bastard servant, who makes a living as a Michelangelo-style inventor - whose mainstay is, of course, chastity belts. It's a tale of pleasantly outlandish twists, which visits a fair few medieval cliches; it's packed with gags, celebrity cameos, near-constant fourth wall breaking, and many over-exposed honkers. In patches, it's very enjoyable. Oh, and Eartha Kitt. Quality 6/10 Entertainment 6/10.

Robot Overlords (2014)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plot: A race of alien robots has taken over Earth and confined the inhabitants to their homes - on pain of death. But when Sean (Callan McAuliffe) and his friends find a way to disable their tracking implants, they set out to find his father, and the truth about the invasion.
Tumblr media
Review: Robot Overlords is one of those films that starts out as a decent idea, but becomes bogged down in references and cliches. The fact that it is British made simply means a lower budget, rather than new ideas.
It’s directed by Jon Wright, the man who bought the world Grabbers just two years earlier, and while it shares much of the DNA of that film it isn’t quite as good. Where Grabbers rewarded prior knowledge of the horror genre with little easter eggs and acknowledgements, Robot Overlords instead seems trite; instead of affectionately mocking the stereotypes, it just throws them in as though their simple presence is enough. It doesn’t help that the overall plot has a ‘seen it all before’ feel to it.
None of this is helped by computer graphics which never feel completely real. The robots all seem shiny in a completely artificial way, as if they haven’t been composited with ideas such as shade and natural light taken into account, thus leaving them with a cartoonish element to them. What doesn’t help matters is that the robots overseer is a robot with a humanoid form, which instead of threatening looks like a possessed child mannequin. The human elements are the best part of the film, as Ben Kingsley gets to play a villain (shock), Gillian Anderson gets to use her British accent (which doesn’t feel real at this point), and the kids all work despite their somewhat cliche characters.
The finale doesn’t feel unique or original either, not even being executed in an interesting manner, and with a love story popping up out of nowhere to break the flow. While the execution is average, the film itself never escapes the shadow of bigger and better versions.
