What does history tell us as to why South America did not develop as much as North America?

Their many reasons of this factor:

Instability

South American countries that gained their independence from spain soon faced instability such as civil wars, coup d'etats e.t.c

South America was like the middle east during the 19th century. Most nations did fight against each other.

US Interventionism

Many people tend to point out this reason as well. The US did interfere and mostly supported coup d'etats in southern american nations like brazil, argentina, chile e.t.c in the 20th century as means as to protect it's own economic interests and to overthrow left wing governments during the cold war.

Colonial rule

South american countries which came under spanish rule except brazil were being exploited and their wealth mostly gold was extracted.

North american countries like the united states of america and canada which came under british and french were less corrupt and settlers who settled there did build up investment and worked hard to do so, however canada and the united states later became Industrialized and therefore became rich. South america on the other hand had feudalistic systems put in place by the portuguese and spanish. The hacienda system would remain in place in south america that were colonized by spain until the 20th century.

South America has been plundered by systemic corruption probably in countries like brazil, argentina e.t.c. Corrupt politicians including despots have been elected into power embezzling funds while leaving most of the population in poverty and misery.

Corruption in brazil has definitely existed since Portuguese rule where nepotism all began.

Corruption has always been rampant in south america while in the united states and canada, corruption is not very rampant as it is in south america.

The encomienda was a system where Spanish adventurers and settlers were granted the legal right to extract forced labour from indigenous tribal chiefs in the Americas colonies of the Spanish Empire. In return, the Europeans were expected to give military protection to the labourers and offer them the opportunity to be converted to Christianity by funding a parish priest.

The encomienda system permitted the Spanish Crown to convert its invading army of conquistadors into colonial settlers, but the system's flaws – maltreatment and significant population reductions from diseases – meant that it was eventually replaced by a system of low-paid labour and large estate management.

Feudal Origins

The Spanish Empire maintained two key objectives in conquered territories: extract material wealth and convert the indigenous peoples to Christianity. Under the category of resources the Spanish saw fit to exploit came the labour of any local peoples in the area. Encomienda was a feudal term which derived from the verb encomendar, meaning "to entrust". In medieval Spain, encomienda referred to the relationship between a landowner and those who worked the land. In a reciprocal relationship, the former received labour while the latter received protection. This concept was applied to land taken back from the Moors during the Reconquista and the colonization of the Canary Islands. Encomienda was then extended to the Americas colonies from 1502 (first in Hispaniola) as a way to justify what amounted to little more than slavery. In 1503 the policy received royal approval, and it spread from the Caribbean to Mexico and Central America, and then to South America as the conquistadors ("conquerors") used it as a means to extract resources and as a reward for their followers.

In a rather dubious justification for exploitation, a favoured European (encomendero) could benefit from free labour for any purpose whatsoever in return for offering local people a certain level of physical protection and an opportunity to be exposed to the Christian religion and so enjoy the ultimate salvation of their souls.

Looking back at 1920's Manchester

Check out these stunning pictures of Manchester back in the 1920's and take a look into the life of a city we have never known. The Manchester Evening News delved into their archives and have reproduced these remarkable images, which illustrate an era before the Hacienda and catchphrases such as "Madchester".

As the MEN writes; "In Manchester the '20s saw the rebuilding of the Royal Exchange, Britain's first greyhound track operating at Belle Vue, and Wythenshawe Aerodrome open for temporary use as Britain's first municipal airport."

"The first half experienced a renewed optimism and a boom in prosperity following the horrors of the First World War: the second - mass unemployment and deprivation as an economic blight crippled the industrial heartlands in the north of England and Wales during the latter half of the decade."

If you find the MEN's pictures interesting, then you might wish to visit Manchester's People's History Museum and the Manchester Jewish Museum, which both capture periods during the 1920's in some of their exhibitions. The Working Class Movement Library in Salford also have some archives from the era which people may find of equal interest.

I love snorkelling at the Royal Haciendas. There is a small reef that is a 15 minute swim from the shore. No one seems to know about it and I am usually out there on my own. It feels like my private aquarium.

Fue un economista británico nacido en Cambridge en junio de 1883, considerado como uno de los mas influyentes del siglo XX.

Era miembro de una familia acomodada de reputado nivel cultural. Su padre era profesor de economía y filosofía en la Universidad de Cambridge y su madre una de las primeras mujeres que logró estudiar en las universidades británicas. Tuvo dos hermanos, la primera, fue esposa de una premio Nobel de Fisiología y su hermano menor fue cirujano y gran bibliófilo.

Durante su estancia universitaria, fue miembro del grupo intelectual y artístico del nuevo orden social de la época, denominado Circulo de Bloomsbury.

Fue funcionario público y destinado a la Indian Office, en donde acumuló un profundo conocimiento del sistema financiero indio.

En 1911, fue nombrado editor de la revista económica, “Economics Journal” y durante los dos años siguientes fue miembro de la Royal Commission on Indian Finance and Currency.

En 1916, trabajó como consejero del Ministerio de Hacienda Británico, y en 1919, tras finalizar la Primera Guerra Mundial formó parte de la delegación británica en la Conferencia de Paz de Paris, y consiguió una plaza de profesor.  Posteriormente conseguiría acceder al King´s College de Cambridge como profesor de economía donde enseñaría hasta su muerte.

Keynes fue un hombre de una vasta cultura y un humanista, orador y poseedor de una prosa exquisita, dedicó gran parte de su vida a los negocios, logrando convertirse en millonario, pero también un hombre de mundo interesado en los asuntos políticos y la economía práctica.

Se le considera un gran bibliógrafo, en especial por lo que respecta a las ediciones originales de las obras de Issac Newton. Bertrand Russell, alguna vez dijo de Keynes, “es la mente mas aguda y más clara que jamás conocí”.

Todos sus escritos económicos fueron respuesta a problemas acuciantes de la economía de su tiempos, y sus previsiones casi siempre eran muy acertadas. En su libro “Tratado sobre el dinero” de 1930, criticó respectivamente la adhesion al patrón oro y a teoría cuantitativa de la moneda.

Su prestigio fue tal que el rey Jorge VI lo nombró barón en 1942,  fue miembro de la cámara de los Lores. Y al final de su vida tuvo gran influencia en la política económica de su país, siendo director del Banco de Inglaterra y asesor del ministro del tesoro. En 1944, presidió la delegación británica en la Conferencia de Bretton Woods, donde contribuyó a dar forma al Fondo Monetario Internacional.

Keynes murió en abril de 1946 a causa de un infarto, derivado de la excesiva presión de su trabajo en los primeros problemas internacionales de la posguerra.

Gaspar Yanga—often simply Yanga or Nyanga (May 14, 1545 - 1618) known as the Primer Libertador de America or “first liberator of the Americas,” He led one of colonial Mexico’s first successful enslaved uprisings and would go on to establish one of the Americas earliest free Black settlements.

He was of royal lineage from West Africa, he was an enslaved worker in the sugarcane plantations of Veracruz. In 1570 he, along with a group of followers, escaped, fled to the mountainous regions near Córdoba, and established a settlement of former slaves or palenque. Taking the role of spiritual and military leader, he structured the agricultural community in an ordered capacity, allowing its growth and occupation of various locations.

He and his band, known as cimarrónes, were implicated in the disruption and looting of trade goods along the Camino Real between Veracruz and Mexico City. They were held responsible for attacking nearby haciendas and kidnapping indigenous women. Perceived as dangerous to the colonial system of slavery through their daring actions against royal commerce and authority, New Spain’s viceroy called for the annihilation of Yanga’s palenque. Destroying the community and its leader would send a message to other would-be rebellious slaves that Spain’s authority over them was absolute.

In 1609, Spanish authorities sent a well-armed militia to defeat him and his palenque but were defeated. His surprise victory over the Spanish heightened the confidence of his warriors and the frustration in Mexico City.

After defeating other Spanish forces sent again the palenque, He offered to make peace but with eleven conditions, the most important being recognition of the freedom of all of the Palenque’s residents before 1608, acknowledgment of the settlement as a legal entity which he and his descendants would govern, and the prohibition of any Spanish in the community. He promised to serve and pay tribute to the Spanish crown. After years of negotiations, in 1618, the town of San Lorenzo de Los Negros was recognized by Spanish authorities as a free Black settlement.
