Rum and Honey Prawn and Avocado Skewers
Tumblr media
Jules is home at the moment, so I reckon the three of us watching Death in Paradise together is reason enough to throw a little Caribbean Feast, especially when Sergeant Naomi Thomas is returning on her home island of St. Barnabas for her best friend’s wedding! And these Rum and Honey Prawn and Avocado Skewers are a delicious way to start the celebrations!
Ingredients (serves 3):
half-a-thumb piece fresh ginger
1/2 lime
1 heaped teaspoon honey
1 tablespoon Ginger and Lime Rum
15 beautiful prawns, steamed and cooled
1 ripe avocado
Peel ginger. Finely grate ginger, and spoon into a bowl. Grate in the zest of the lime halve, and thoroughly squeeze in its juice. Add honey and Ginger and Lime Rum.
Peel prawns and add them to the bowl. Toss well, with clean hands, to coat in ginger, lime, honey and Rum.
Place the bowl in the refrigerator, and allow prawns to marinate, at least a couple of hours (the longer, the better!), tossing them every now and then.
Peel and halve avocado. Cut its flesh into large enough dices.
Arrange a Rum and honey prawn and an avocado dice onto each of fifteen skewers, and place them onto serving tray. Chill until serving time.
Serve Rum and Honey Prawn and Avocado Skewers alongside Féroce d'Avocat, Fried Plantain, and Accras de Morue, and chilled Planters Punch or Queens Park Swizzles!

Temaki
Sushi was originally meant as fast food in Japan.  It was convenient, something to grab and go. The temaki, or hand roll, is a variation on that.  The epitome of something to hold in your hand and wolf down with your beverage of choice in hand. Seems that Japanese food can be found in the most unlikely of places nowadays.  Case in point being Temaki, located deep in the Brixton Market – a place…

This is for our friend @veryflowerobservation with the hopes that it will both lift spirits and also provide some torture. From "A Story That Doesn't Exist Yet".
---
“This looks delicious,” Ross said as he smelled the aromatic bowl of what appeared to be a stir fry of some sort that Demelza had set beside him. “To what do I owe the pleasure of a mid morning snack?” Ross asked.
“Consider it early lunch and sorry I didn't make you any breakfast this mornin’. I guess I needed the extra sleep,” she said and tried to hide a yawn.
That she’d slept past ten was unusual, but Ross assumed her body’s rhythms had changed since becoming a student. Later nights for working or for partying meant late mornings. He remembered being young. Now he couldn't sleep past 8 even if he wanted to.
“I’ve been making my own breakfast these many months. I can handle the toaster,” he laughed then looked at her again more closely. Her eyes looked bleary and her face managed to look both pale and flushed at the same time. “Your head okay?” he asked, recognising the symptoms.
“Oh, I’ll be fine. I guess last night at the Carters I had a bit more wine than I’d realised. But that’s why I made this: fried rice. Perfect hangover cure--I learned that from Hugh. Although he never makes it himself, he goes round to the takeaway on the corner and buys it for us. I always think that's one step too many and who has money after a night out? Well I guess he always does but anyway I figured out how to make a decent version on my own.”
“Yes, it's good,” Ross said, suddenly enjoying his bowl a bit less.
“Did I ever tell you about that takeaway? It’s called Little Ginger and the owner, his name is Doug, is a very sweet man. He’s started calling me Little Ginger from Cornwall.  We had a good laugh about that so now he gives us extra prawn chips. And sadly, that nickname has stuck a bit with my flatmates.”
Ross took another bite and felt guilty that he didn't have more interest in her story. About her flatmates, about her new nicknames, about her new friends, about a handsome young bloke who lived with her and for whom she now cooked--and who thought nothing of spending his money on her.
“It’s not authentic though,“ she went on. “I don't have the proper oils or a decent wok--I don't have a wok at all. But I do think the secret is the ginger. I mean the secret to helpin’ with a hangover.”
“You know what they say, an ounce of prevention…” he began.
“Prevent what?”
“A hangover.”
“What?” she asked.
“Maybe you should think about drinking less.” He immediately regretted it the moment the words left his mouth and could have predicted verbatim what she’d say next.
“You seriously say that...to me? You, Ross Poldark?” she laughed and shook her head in disbelief. She happened to be leaning against the oak cabinet that after all these years still held the whisky and rum and other spirits at Nampara, and she gestured dramatically towards it as if she were a game show hostess showing him his prize.
“Demelza…” he began.
“How many times over the years did I help you to bed, stumblin’ drunk? And as I recall, we would have never met if it hadn't been for you too drinkin too much.”
“What? Now it was his turn for righteous incredulity.
“The night you picked me up from that bus stop all those years ago, you’d been halfway home but turned around to go buy a bottle of cheap whiskey back in Redruth.”
“How did you...did I ever tell you that?” There was no point arguing. She was right.
“No, I saw you pass by in one direction and then you came back again in the other. And when I spotted the bottle you'd shoved under the seat, I puzzled it all out.”
“Yes well…I’m sorry for that.”
“For pickin’ me up?”
“No. For any harm I may have caused you…”
“Oh Ross, I know you don't drink as much now and haven't for years. That's not lost on me,” she said with a hint of warmth returning to her voice.
And that's because of you. At one time anyway, he thought but didn't say aloud.
“And I don't drink that much, really. Far less than my mates anyway. I just don't have money to be pissin’ away at the pub.”
“I’m sure there’s someone in all of Bristol willing to buy your drink,” he said a bit more sullenly than he’d intended.
“Like that’s safe?” she laughed. “Besides, it's the time that’s the issue, really. I always feel I have to work twice as hard to get the results others do--they’re just all so much more clever and better educated than I am, so I can't afford to blow a single brain cell on shots of vodka or whatever.”
“Demelza, listen to me.” He didn't like it when she talked that way. Maybe even less than when she talked about Hugh’s efforts to charm her. “They are not that much smarter than you--it could just all be a front. We often misperceive ourselves in comparison to others, and it's not a helpful habit,” he said gently, knowing he should heed his own advice. “And I’m not judging. Worrying maybe, but not judging.”
“Okay, Ross. I believe you,” she said. “Do you want some more? I made enough for an army.”
“No thank you, I have to go see Tonkin,” he sighed. And Elizabeth. But he decided not to tell her that at this very moment when they’d only just gotten back to steady footing. His visit to Trenwith Road would be brief--Elizabeth needed to sign one single document--and afterwards he’d tell Demelza about it in boring legal details, side-stepping any potential drama.
“Of course, you have a business to run,” she said and looked into her bowl with disappointment as if her rice had suddenly betrayed her. Could she know his plans?
“I have a business to save,” he corrected her. “Or have you forgotten that I’m still recovering from a lawsuit and property dispute with George Warleggan?”
“No, Ross. I haven't forgotten. Please give my best to Tonkin,” she said, then abandoning her bowl she walked towards the library. “And to anyone else you’ll be savin’ today,” she said without turning around.

Note
My favourite question to ask people is: what would be your death row: meal, drink and form of entertainment?
I’ve had this in my head for years
Nachos with all the toppings, prawn linguine and lime cheesecake 👀
Drink if we’re talking alcohol would be a rum cocktail, non alcoholic would be orange juice
Entertainment? Goddddd idk that’s tough
I started off so well

Places to eat in London : Part 2
Tumblr media
THE OLD BANK OF ENGLAND
Fleet Road, London
A photo similar to this basically led me to search up The Old Bank of England on google. It is probably the most curious courtyard I have ever seen because of the double-decker parked inside which, in fact, have tables inside for dining. Note that this is just a small area of the pub/restaurant. Th e inside of the old Law Court's branch of the old Bank of England has one of the most spectacular interior in all pubs of London and I am just so glad I stumbled upon this on Facebook.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To secure seats especially for a large group, it is always best to reserve a table during the evenings when the pub literally is swarmed. I have been here twice and the second one was in the middle of the day. I expected it to be almost empty but I was wrong. People from the neighbouring offices take their lunch breaks here coupled with day-drinking as well.
Tumblr media
Since we were just here for the beer and the instagram photo-op. we just ordered one of their heritage beers, the Rivertown pils. And because we just had a huge dinner before this, we ordered just a few small appetisers. We got the KING PRAWNS PIL PIL, STICKY THAI CHICKEN BITES, AND COD GOUJONS. They were in small portions but very tasteful!
Tumblr media
The interior of the Old Bank of England is massive and I am going to make a separate blog on this with all the gazillion of instagram photos I managed to take.
Book here www.oldbankofengland.com.
CHAI GUYS, COVENT GARDEN
Seven Dials Market, London
Tumblr media
Not a place to eat but my friend, Sarjo, highly recommended this place for the best chai tea latte. She apparently went here last year and purchased one of their tea in tin cans and she decided to grab a different one this time around. We were so thirsty from all the walking so we got us iced chai tea lattes.
Tumblr media
I really love how they really said it with confidence that they are the best chai in London but inserted the "probably" just to be down-to-earth. Haha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is me and my gorgeous friend, Sarjo, enjoying our chais. And, of course, a photo of us standing next to a cucumber-themed photobooth at Seven Dials that wasn't even functioning.
Click the photo below to order their chai tea for your next home-brew!
Tumblr media
PRETO BRAZILIAN STEAKHOUSE, VICTORIA
Wilton Road, London
Tumblr media
I haven't had Brazilian food before so when the idea came up, I was a little bit skeptical. My college friend really insisted that we go to this Brazilian buffet where they go around and serve freshly grilled meat in skewers. The idea sounded so good but I wasn't sure if I was up to it since I have been craving Chinese food at that time. But then when we got inside the restaurant, the vibe was on! The salads that were on display were so vibrant, the wide array of side dishes were five-star, and their beans with tender pork ribs was so incredible I could almost cry. That was probably my favorite! They kept on serving us grilled meat too so I was literally full to the brim in an instant. This was a no-brainer, it is one of the best buffets I have ever had in my entire life. Men with huge appetite should eat here (like my boyfriend lol).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I finally had to wave my white flag (or shall I say flipped my card to say NO to their delicious barbecued meat or known as "churrasco" in Brazil). They have this clever way of signalling the waiters to keep the meat coming with a card that say "More, Please" and of course says the opposite if you flip it. The next time I am coming to Preto for the Brazilian food buffet, I'll make sure I'll have the whole day to just sit and take it slow, skip meals before hand, and probably save the beans for last. :)
THE RUM KITCHEN, BRIXTON
Coldharbour, London
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We walked into the restaurant and we were already greeted by a tables full of people of what seem to be extended families, group of friends, locals, patrons... all of them seem to be feeling really at home in The Rum Kitchen. But I can see why. The restaurant gives off such a home-y vibe. The music, the flavourful Carribean, and an order of cocktail during the ¨happy hour¨ are the key ingredients to an amazing food experience with friends and families.
Brixton is easily one of the places in London that they'd warn tourists about because of its reputation for having high crime rate and drug-related issues. But that was in the past. Brixton is one of London's revitalisation projects to recreate once more as a vibrant side of the town. The southern neighbourhood is still worth seeing though because of the food offers. And Brixton has an abundance of food products that cater to African culinary.
MIHBAJ, CAFÉ AND KITCHEN, PADDINGTON
Præd Street, London
There's nothing like ending the tour here in London with a full English breakfast. We were checked-in at a hotel in Paddington and we decided we didn't wanna walk kilometers to the best Google recommendation. We just had to find a breakfast place nearby. Mihbaj Cafe was a super cute corner for breakfast and catching up with an old friend.
Me and Andrei both got us two English breakfasts with sunny-side up eggs on sourdough, spiced sausages, mushroom, & homemade white beans (fasolia) in tomato sauce. We sat in a corner with our feet up, just chilling and enjoying the filtered light coming from above our heads. Get inspired and check out their instagram @mihbaj.

Coconut Rum Prawn Pilaf
Tumblr media
This Coconut Rum Prawn Pilaf is beautifully fragrant, and deliciously tasty! If you close your eyes with the first spoonful, you might think you’re sitting by the Caribbean Sea. If the illusion doesn’t happen though, you can still eat it whilst watching Death in Paradise!
Ingredients (serves 4 to 6):
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon Graines à Roussir
1 small onion
1 thumb-sized piece fresh ginger
½ tablespoon Colombo spices
¼ teaspoon Red Chili Flakes
18 beautiful, fresh prawns
2 cups long grain rice
1 teaspoon coarse sea salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
3/4 cup coconut flavoured rum (like Malibu)
2 1/4 cups water
Heat a large, deep, nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add olive oil. Add Graines à Roussir  and fry, a minute.
Peel and finely chop onion, and add to the skillet. Cook, 2 minutes.
Peel and finely chop ginger. Stir into the skillet, and fry, 1 minute more.
Stir in Colombo spices and Red Chili Flakes. Cook, a couple of minutes more.
Peel the prawns, and stir into the oil and spices. Cook, a few minutes, until bright pink.
Then, stir in the rice, coating well into the oil and spices, until translucent. Season with coarse sea salt and black pepper.
Once the rice is well-coated and translucent, stir in half of the coconut rum; then, the water, and give a good stir. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover with a lid, and simmer, about 20 to 25 minutes, until all liquid has been absorbed.
Once cooked, stir in remaining coconut rum, and cook, a couple of minutes more.
Serve Coconut Rum Prawn Pilaf hot.

El Presidente brings the fiesta to Union Market!
El Presidente has vibrant energy and a festive ambiance! Offering a fusion of festive and nostalgic Mexican flavors, their menu celebrates traditional ingredients infused with a contemporary flair.
I had the pleasure of indulging in delights such as the raw bar selections, guacamole with succulent king crab and delicious customizable lobster tacos. The menu also had indulgent shared plates like the Tomahawk Ribeye and Whole Striped Sea Bass. The menu delivers with both the anticipated guacamole and tortilla soup, alongside the more unusual offerings: oysters and colossal prawns showcased on ice near the partially open kitchen, reminiscent of a lively marisquería, or seafood eatery. Among the captivating pairings, one standout features slices of raw yellowtail nestled in a refreshing blend of cucumber juice, fennel, and lime—a vibrant green contrast to the velvety texture of the fish.
The best part of tis restaurant was immersing myself in the interconnected dining spaces adorned with eclectic decor, all while experiencing the legendary hospitality synonymous with the southern border. El Presidente promises an immersive dining experience that celebrates the artistry of socializing.
Complementing El Presidente’s culinary offerings were an array of tequila and mezcal cocktails, crafted to highlight the rich agave flavors. I especially enjoyed El Presidente's frozen pineapple margarita, a refreshing blend of fruit juice and tequila that packs a flavorful punch. Guests that dined close to me raved about a Pepper cocktail which lived up up to its bold name with a tantalizing combination of red bell pepper juice, chili liqueur, and smoky mezcal. And for a taste of tropical paradise, savor the irresistible mix of rum, coconut, lime, and pineapple juice served in a playful shark-shaped glass topped with a charming palm tree umbrella. The beverages certainly call for sponges!
All in all, El Presidente is easily a 10/10. It ventures beyond the scope of many typical Mexican restaurants and remains the easiest way to reach Mexico City without a passport.
