Ryan Popso is probably the only character on the show with any sort of normalcy. He’s sensitive and wears his emotions on his sleeves. And, occasionally, his tears on his face.

So, remember Color Theory? It’s undergoing a reboot. All characters introduced up until this point, the one’s intended for Season Four, and a slew of newbies will appear, but some may have different names and some slight design tweaks. The 25 characters as seen above are the main cast.

I’m trying to tackle a more serialized episode structure rather than the comic strip format from beforehand. Asks are still open, see the pinned post for the rules.

Effects: Salt Shaker (Bryan sprays salt at the target); Cauterize (Bryan heals or scorches recipient); Spirit Surge (Bryan drains life from the immediate area and percussively redirects it into the opponent); Enchant (Bryan semi-telekinetically grants inanimate objects movement, although he has zero control over what they actually do)

Character Bases

Bryan happens to bear a striking resemblance to Wade from Elemental. This is just a coincidence; I designed him long before it was announced.

Development

Bryan, formerly “Cy” in his conception and “Ryan” in Rough Sketch was originally a fussy preppie, a worrywart to cancel out the core cast’s lunacy. His initial outfit is a remnant of this idea, but his hair was simplified later on and he abandoned the shut eyes. A few early episodes also played him more as an energetic child. He was younger in this stage after all.

His nervous wreck tendencies continued through much of Rough Sketch before becoming a more nuanced, normal character. He’s less exaggeratedly emotional and touchy feely.

If Gordon is the group’s logical core, Bryan’s their moral one. He’s one of the very few “normal” people in Dullsville and keeps a calm, soft spoken character with a few stereotypically nerdy interests. In any other setting he’d be a low key character, but in Dullsville he’s forced to be the guy who keeps the others from committing outrageous (read: stupid) felonies in their weekly schemes. This being It’s Color Theory, he gets sucked into these going-ons, anyway. Sometimes willingly.

Bryan also dabbles in cooking. He’s actually pretty great at it, but he takes his craft very seriously. And by “seriously”, of course we mean “he has a cleaver”.

Fun Facts

Bryan is the first character outside of the Primary Six to speak onscreen.

Bryan’s prototype had a far more nervous personality and a visibly different hairstyle.

Bryan’s two floating hair strands were inconsistently drawn throughout RS’s early stages. By ICT, they’re a permanent design choice.

Bryan, despite his color being an alternate name for aqua, is a distinct character from Walter and has a lighter skin tone.

Bryan is one of many characters to have changed their name during development, being “Cy” in his initial conception and “Ryan” throughout Rough Sketch.

Bryan’s surname is a derivative of “pop” and “Popsicle”.

Bryan has a rare, recessive gene that makes old ladies compulsively pinch his cheeks on sight.
