Hello Canada and Bienvenue! So, the Toronto Games in 2017 were incredible, and I’m told there is no rivalry between east and west coast, especially when it comes to sport… so I have a question for you Vancouver: Are you ready to show Toronto—and the world—how the Games are done?
I would like to begin by honoring the First Nations, who are hosting this year’s Games. Lílwat, Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh. Hite-sap —— coo-cwee-lum. From the bid for the Games through to this week’s competition, we have walked together, side-by-side on this journey, and are so grateful to you for having these games on your land. Today, and for the next week: Warriors unite.
In this moment of difficulty and division in many parts of the world, we gather here in Vancouver in a spirit of unity. We represent 23 nations. Speak many different languages and reflect the full breadth of the world’s religions and faiths. Beyond any differences, here at the Invictus Games we are grounded in mutual respect, competing fiercely, but believing in one another. Supporting one another. And rooting for one another.

That is the magic of the Invictus Games. For one of the most powerful ways of healing comes not from the hospital or recovery center, but from having a sense of purpose. A sense of belonging. From being a part of something greater than ourselves. Someone once asked Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison how we survive whole in the world. She replied: “Sometimes, you don’t survive whole, you just survive in part. But the grandeur of life is that attempt. It’s not about that solution. It is about being as fearless as one can, and behaving as beautifully as one can, under completely impossible circumstances.”
So as we embark on this year’s competition, here is my challenge to all of you: Show the world how you behave under completely impossible circumstances. Show the world your fearlessness. Show the world the grandeur in your attempt at victory. Show the world why you are Invictus.

I've talked about my thoughts on the whole "old net revivalism" thing on here before, and I think what it's reacting to -- the fact that it's obvious the internet is, in fact, under the control of a ruling class who wants to turn people into useful, hateful idiots, and that the utopian pretenses of a pro-social internet have long since dimmed into being quaintly vintage -- is very real.
The problem is that I don't think we're going to solve anything by making another Myspace 2, or Bringing Back Sites For Kids (I'm starting to think that the strict separation of "children's" and "non-children's" media is, in fact, a conservative familialist impulse, but that's for another rant), or even crowding older, less popular social networks: this is tantamount to attempting to elude the problem, which is primarily economic and political, by propping up a new service as embodying a nostalgic utopian ideal.
I sympathize with all this, as a former autistic kid whose main source of human connection has long since been the web... but I think perhaps it's time we realize that a solution to the problem of a soul-deadening internet is, perhaps, to disavow social media altogether. This isn't to say we should engage in complete abstinence, but I'm starting to think maybe it's better for us to stop relying so much on the internet itself to give us what we want from it; if it really is just one big dead mall that's designed to make people stupid and terrible to one another, then maybe we should just sap what we can from it and operate on our own terms.
In my opinion, this means shifting an emphasis more on on self-hosting (a miracle of modern digital technology is relatively cheap storage and hosting, and its essentially unlimited capacity to be made redundant through copying), peer-to-peer file sharing, a return to non-web protocols for direct communication, and the cultivation of new, ad-hoc forms of aggregation and interaction which are not bound to the necessity of being massively scalable. Above all, though, is that the reality of the internet -- not a neutral informational field, but a beast propped on the backs of a million economic interests -- is held close to heart. If we want to be utopian about it, we will have to prod at these tiny utopianisms as they emerge and see what they each reveal.

Code Name: The Blood Aphids
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: The surviving instances of SCP-AGI have been sent to Site-AA. They are contained within a 20x20 meter artificial environment with trees artificially grown to be biologically similar to the trees they were found in. The entire environment is sealed by explosive proof glass to prevent a containment breach. In the event a containment breach does happen, Foundation guards are to arm themselves with flamethrowers as it is the most effective weapon against SCP-AGI. 
Description: SCP-AGI is an anomalous but ancient species of insects that greatly resemble body shape and sized of common Aphids. However, unlike Aphids SCP-AGI instances are carnivorous with an insatiable desire for blood. They are capable of flight, and luminescent yet can only be seen when in darkness and in large clumps. They normally sleep at daytime and only hunt at night. When they hunt, they find living organisms and web them up to feed on them without resistance. 
Each SCP-AGI instance normally only drinks a single drop of blood, but the resulting bite leads to extreme irritation and injects a small amount of weak paralysis venom into the host. Naturally a single bite does nothing but causes a minor rash and some numbness in the host but nothing serious or even noticeable. However, thousands of bites from a swarm are more than enough to kill a human or put them an inch from death. They often web up their victims so they can keep it fresh and slowly eat the flesh later. How exactly they web up their victims is unknown. 
SCP-AGI instances were discovered in 1994 when a logging crew that cut down a newly discovered species of trees suddenly disappeared. These trees were anomalous in that their sap much resembled the blood type O- of a human. Additionally, inside of these trees were hibernating SCP-AGI instances that regularly fed on the sap to stay alive. However, upon being cut the SCP-AGI instances were released and identified the humans as food, thus started feeding on every living organism in the area. Mobile Task Force Lamba-12 forces was quickly sent to cull the area as anti-logging activist, hikers, and bird watchers were regularly getting snatched and eaten. 
Once the range of the "infected" area was confirmed they started burning the areas surrounded and had the fire go inward to surround the SCP-AGI swarm. This would help with the cover story of there being a forest fire caused by reckless hitchhikers who died in said fire. While the fire was blazing Foundation agents wearing Temperature Resistant Suits went into the yet to be burned areas and collected as many SCP-AGI instances as possible.
Unfortunately, upon entering the "infected" area, a single MTF Lambda-12 squad came across Persons of Interest: Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. They and a U.S. Forest Service agent were caught up in webbing cocoons created by SCP-AGI after nearly feeding on all their blood. Ironically it was because there were so many of them that SCP-AGI instances weren't able to drink all their blood, saving them from dying. Foundation medical staff disguised as Government Quarantine Group recovered them and sent them to a medical tent and presented them the cover story upon their recovery. However, Fox Molder was somehow able to recognize them as SCP Foundation agents and asked what they were going to do with the bugs.  
The agent he confronted simply remained silent and refused to answer any more of his questions. He, the service agent, and Dana Scully were released into a hospital afterwards. The service agent was given Class G Amnestics, while Dana Scully wasn't given any amnestics as the Foundation knew Fox Mulder would just tell her everything later anyways. Thankfully, since she is a natural skeptic, it makes her more trustworthy to believe any cover story the Foundation makes. As such, the original proposal to have Fox Mulder be assigned a new partner that is a Foundation agent has been denied. It is essential that a skeptic who is as foolish as Dana Scully remain at the side of Fox Mulder who is inching closer to the truth every day.

Respectfully, no. That is not correct. What aspect of it that was a stunt was calling the government's bluff. Taking the deadline more seriously than even the government wanted them to. But like, it was and is still banned. If any of the app stores were still hosting it, they would face a fine of $5,000 per user.
Specifically thanking Trump by name was, yes, absolutely to get into his good graces. But shutting off the service was not. It was to force the issue and not go quietly into the good night. It was the correct optics and business decision to strike out at a lame duck administration making a drastically unpopular decision that was going to affect their bottom line, and the only response that the Biden administration had was to just throw up their hands and say "ehhhhhh Trump can deal with this shit, we out." The stunt worked. Trump then, having decided that since Tiktok helped spread his election messaging, it was good now, announced that he was extending the deadline for them to sell. This is far from the only post I have seen parroting this blatant conspiracy theory. I've seen dozens. I'm calling it out. It is wrong in fact, but even more wrong in spirit. It is predicated on a complete lack of any knowledge of geopolitics, domestic policy, political history, current events, or economics. It's endemic of a recent extremely worrying slide into uninformed conspiratorial thinking on here. I'm not even American. I am Canadian, and I know more about a ban that doesn't even affect me than people on this website can be fucked to learn about what's happening in the world because it's easier to reframe everything as "the bad people are doing bad stuff and it's all a part of their evil master plan."
It corrodes critical thinking. It saps motivation for resistance. It makes your enemies look all powerful. And past all of that, it's not fucking true.
