In about 2004, I saw my first ever fanvid. It was in an X-Files LJ community and it was an MSR vid set to 'She Will Be Loved'
It was what got me into vidding. And for TWENTY YEARS every time I heard that song, I thought of that MSR vid. I even spent years trying to dig through LJ and doing a million google searches, desperately trying to find it again. But no luck.
It's such an important fandom moment for me, my partner has heard me wax poetic about it on multiple occasions.
Three days ago, I was in my back up hard drive (which has all of my computer files from 2003-present!) and I FOUND THE VIDEO!!!!! Apparently, I had downloaded it back then! It's so old it's a .ram file.
I FINALLY got to show my partner and it was such a delight. The ending even had credits of the fan who made it, including their website from 2004. I knew it was a long shot but I went there and that lead me to an email, so I reached out and told them 'Hey, this video you made 20 years ago still lives in my head forever and I love it'
And today -- THEY WROTE BACK 馃ス馃槶馃グThey were tickled to hear I love that video so much and told me where to find it on YouTube. So now, I can finally share my favourite MSR video with tumblr:

Part of the enjoyment of watching stuff like The X-Files or Buffy or Star Trek or whatever is that like. Yes, there are some excellent episodes that are truly incredible, but sometimes an episode is the dumbest shit you've ever seen in your life AND IT'S DELIGHTFUL.
I mentioned this to a friend yesterday and she was like "Oh yeah because you know there will be good episodes again so it doesn't bother you!" but no. The bad episodes are fun on their own for me. I don't always want a slick streaming series with 8 episodes where each one is a work of tightly written cinematic excellence. I can enjoy that, too, but sometimes I want an episode with the dumbest premise known to man. Not all dumb, not all the time, not badly made or created as a joke, but just...silly but heartfelt.
Like yeah, okay, I love getting an episode where Brad Dourif is channeling the dead and it's beautiful and tragic and thought provoking and powerful, but sometimes I also enjoy "the problematic weirdly sexy genderfluid Amish people turned out to be aliens you guys" performed without a breath of irony.

"Would Mulder and Scully solve [insert mystery from a non X-Files piece of media here]" is a deceptively complex question because there are two different answers depending on which version of the show our hypothetical episode is part of.
In the one version, Mulder and Scully wildly misunderstand the nature of the problem in diametrically opposite ways, and eventually succeed in removing the immediate threat in spite of having no idea what's going on, but do so in a way that traumatises everyone involved and ultimately reinforces the status quo, because law enforcement agencies are institutionally incapable of solving real problems even when their individual agents act with the best of intentions.
In the other version, Mulder pulls the correct solution out of his ass in the first five minutes, but can't prove it because the evidence keeps getting Phineas and Ferbed the moment before Scully walks into the room, and the problem is fixed forever by shooting a sewer man with a gun.
The trouble, of course, is that these are both describing the same show.
