As promised on our Twitter page, here is something special! A larger teaser for SMBCD, even running on Super NES hardware using the SD2SNES (or FXPak Pro)! Please note that there is a low chance things will be exactly the same in subsequent demos or the final release, especially the music; the music is a placeholder, which is "Off Shore" by Toshiki Kadomatsu from the album "Summer Time Romance ~ From KIKI".

Even better, most of the common JRPGs that were fan-translated will not work properly on modern emulators or the actual real hardware, because the translators only tested it on ZSNES.
My theory on the Final Insect text screen blanking is actually why those fan-translated games would break: they'd try to write to video RAM during active display. That's when the PPU has near-exclusive access to VRAM — the game code is supposed to write to it between frames, during VBlank.
Drawing text on the screen in a fixed width font is easy, where each character glyph is one or two tiles in size, or four if it's Japanese. But variable width fonts are harder to work with, and if you have a screen full of text, all of it variable width? You're gonna run out of time and write new character data during active display. Or maybe it's just a dialogue box's worth of text, but there's a lot of special effects happening taking up most of VBlank time.
There's a reason the official translations for Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger use 8x8 font graphics in their menus, with at best a dialogue box's worth of VWF, and that's it.
Relatedly, there's the echo buffer in the SPC-700 sound chip. A great many Super Mario World hacks use a tool called addmusic to change the soundtrack. But the earlier versions of that tool didn't account for the fact that the echo buffer is still part of the SPC-700's limited internal RAM (only 64 KiB of it!) and set the buffer length to an out of range value. ZSNES being ZSNES just ran with it, but original hardware and any emulator that properly implements the echo buffer would trample other parts of that 64 KiB. As such, there are hundreds of well-crafted, interesting SMW hacks that you simply can't play on modern emulators, or on hardware with an SD2SNES unit, any more than you can play Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon - Another Story.
Ya gotta love early SNES demo/homebrew productions. Improperly initialized OAM, failure to set object sizes correctly so bad it flickers, disregard for objects-per-line limits on top, improper blanking of tilemaps (I think it hit active display around halfway through and further writes were blocked until it hit vblank again)...
I dunno about you but I love this shit.
"Final Insect" by Taurus is not a Super NES demo. This is a ZSNES demo. It'll only run correctly on incorrect emulators.

Well I really don’t understand why you have to bought a EverDrive card which cost 345 CAD

on the platform but was actually only change the shell of this one !
This one is only 150 CAD,

You bought the different case for 200 CAD
How clever the seller is !
He could change the plastic shell to other card and ask for even more !

There's also ModLoader64 which does this! It's an N64 emulator that allows for things like Online Co-Op play - including Ocarina Of Time Multiworld Randomizers - switching out player models on the fly and it can load 3rd party mods too.
Sadly it's a bit outdated and buggy with more recent versions of the Ocarina of Time Randomizer
(Also Crowd Control is wild, it doesn't actually add a new layer to the emulation! It injects code on the fly, similar to Corruptions. It works on hardware on the SNES too, if you have an FX PAK (formerly known as SD2SNES) which has an USB port.)
whenever you ask your friend who’s really into JRPGs “hey which one do i start with is the newest one fine” they always go “no, what you gotta do is head on over to ebay and look up the entry that completely bombed commercially. You’ll see that it goes for $800. Close ebay. Download an emulator for a console no younger than 17 years old. Download the ROM, and also this laundry list of various tweaks, retextures, and QoL tweaks. Pull up this exact spoiler-free guide put up a decade ago from GameFAQs, and you’ll experience the best game this series has to offer.” Like???

Super Famicom Wars translated ⊟
Intelligent Systems’ third entry for the series we know as Advance Wars in the West is now available with a full English translation for the first time since its debut nearly 20 years ago. This is an especially curious game because it came out exclusively for Japan’s Nintendo Power re-writable cartridge system (with demo versions broadcasted on the Satellaview service), before eventually re-releasing to Virtual Console for Wii/Wii U.
You can download the Super Famicom Wars patch at ROMhacking.net:
“When mining the ROM, some unreachable content has been found, which from the looks it is mostly related to debugging and internal playtesting. Some, but not all, of these things have also been translated.
The patch has been tested on Japanese, European and American SNES/SFC hardware using the SD2SNES and Super Everdrive flash cartridges. It should also work on most emulators, and has been confirmed working via ‘Canoe’ on the SNES Classic Mini.”
Shout-outs to Optiroc, breakin, Lee Hyde, and Sky Yoshi for the patch. If you prefer to play something more modern but still similar to the series, Tiny Metal released for Switch’s eShop recently (Nintendo Life's review likes it), and the fantasy-themed Wargroove is also coming soon!

helping some1 pick a game to speedrun
i guess this applies to social media/reddit posts where someone who doesn’t speedrun anything yet asks what game they should run and you wanna say more than “whatever you want”
it’s better to ask them stuff to narrow down their choices
ask them what their favourite games are casually, then from their set of favourite games, help them narrow it down to:
a game they've played over multiple long sittings in a close timespan, i.e. a few multiple-hour sessions over 2 weeks. they're gonna need to already enjoy spending time on this game
the game that has their favourite soundtrack. they're gonna be hearing it a lot, so it's good to pick one that they won't get tired of hearing
does it seem like they're really into a certain genre? if for example they list 5 platformers and 1 rpg, a platformer is probably a good choice. which of the 5 platformers do you think has the best learning resources? suggest that one
this'll give them 3 or fewer choices which will help them focus their research better and end up picking a game they like
with ppl who are unsure of where they wanna go with such a broad question, i don't think it's necessary to unload on them right away that "well depending on your game you might have no resources so just go watch a pb video and try to replicate it, or you might pick a game that has lots of resources so you should get a sd2snes or so and so emulator, or or or" -- imo it's better right now to just help em figure out which games they'd like to play over and over and over again and they'll figure out which of their narrowed down choices have existing communities that best fit their learning style!

After quite some time on this project, I am proud to finally introduce the MSU-1 version of Terranigma/Tenchi Souzou to the community! It features a completely rearranged soundtrack by Martin Denk for your listening pleasure while playing the game. Only the save jingle and baby cry sound are left untouched. Special thanks go to Conn, who helped me a lot with the progress on this patch. The hack should work on all PAL versions as well as the the Japanese NTSC version of the game. Please leave me feedback if you should encounter any bugs! For those not familiar with MSU-1, these patches work on BSNES/Higan emulators and on sd2snes flashcards on real hardware.
