S2 Day 13 Pt2 Have Your Cake And Eat It
SUMMARY: A Bit of Me fanfic. Challenge time. And this one’s called Master Baker. The Islanders decorate a cake. Will cracks start to show in the cakes and the couples?
Interesting fact: In the 2018 UK Love Island Series, Season 4, Day 47, the couples took part in a ‘Master Baker Challenge.’ The boys directed the girls to decorate a cake. The boys stood in front of their cake, arms tied behind their backs. Blindfolded, the girls stood behind their partners and had to reach around the boys to decorate the cakes.

New chapter out. Read full chapter on A03 or Wattpad. Links below.
Follows canon, all gem scenes. Soem adds from actual TV show challenges and LITG, other season cake challenge.
Little Exerpt:
The islanders slow-mo down to the challenge stage, cheering and running. Bobby cheers: “Let’s get baking. Bake off, bake off. B-b-b bake off.” The boys start chanting along with him. “B-b-b bake off. B-b-b bake off.”
Hope picks up a spatula and scoops up some icing. Her hand is shaking a little. Noah's eyes widened as he watched the cake droop slightly on one side and a chunk of cake crumbled off one of the edges.  “No, no, no.” he echoed, his voice filled with worry.
Hope's mind raced for a solution. “Ooh, I know how to fix it!” she said, her voice determined.
Priya suggested, “So let’s work out the colours.” Ibrahim eyes up the bowls of icing. “Is there any purple, babe? We can make a Violet Man cake!”
Bobby shouts out, “Our cake is looking pretty glorious already. Everyone hear that? We’ve got this in the bag. The icing bag…”
In the Beach Hut, Bobby: I could do that in my sleep. This is going to be easy!
You gave a sultry laugh, causing his heart to beat faster. “You really don’t want to get icing on that.” Gary's fingers caress your abdomen, setting off goosebumps on your skin. “Or maybe you do… If you’re into that!”
In the Beach Hut, Grace: It’s difficult when you're blindfolded. All your other senses are heightened, massively.
“I’m going to just slap a bit of that icing on it.” Marisol is patting it on. “It’s all about slapping the cake.
“What? You’re going to slap that cake?” Bobby's eyes widened in alarm as Marisol enthusiastically smacked the cake. A wet splatter is quickly followed by large drops of icing raining down onto your face.
In the Beach Hut, Marisol: Spatulas, spoons, we didn't need them. I had these two babies right here. (She holds up her hands.) Like, Patrick Swayze.
As she started writing, Gary squinted, trying to read her message. "What are you writing, Grace?" He furrowed his brow, still confused. “‘SNES DUDES’?”
“It doesn’t say that.” You whisper in his ear, “It says ‘Send nudes’.”
In the Beach Hut, Gary: I reckon she really enjoyed the tieing thing.
Bobby was pleased that Lottie gently placed the fruit in a couple of places. “Oh, it looks really good, babe.” Then his partner annouced, “Let’s make ours so OTT with the decor.” She laughed, making a snorting sound.

anti-piracy
Tumblr media
So, there was an official program put out to convert the original Higurashi Visual Novels to a GBA rom format to either play on emulators or a homebrew cart. This anti-piracy measure was intended to trigger if it detected that you were trying this on a pirated copy of the visual novel. After booting up the rom file, the screen will just have Rena insult you and then promptly dox you with your PC user name and IP address. I don't think this works in the final release, but people did get it working again in recent years. Since it doesn't work properly I think this can be considered accidentally cut content.
Dude
Tumblr media
Dude is an unused enemy that has 20000 HP but can only attack for 10 damage. Probably intended to be a boss considering its high HP, and is also part of an unused enemy formation called Dudetroop, which includes Dude, existing enemies Ghost, Vital Statue and Clawman, as well as the Gremlin and Gremlin Master, which are two other unused enemies.

meteor slime
Tumblr media
Silly little fella. It had the ability to attract nearby items, like a magnet, potentially forcing items into places they shouldnt be if not handled properly It was scrapped because the boom slime already put stuff in bad places when not taken care of good, and as development continued, the dervish slime eventually ended up sucking stuff in instead, making the meteor slime kinda pointless I still think it was fun & cool tho

SNES CD-ROM
Tumblr media
The SNES CD was a project developed by Nintendo in partnership with Sony. Plans existed for both a CD-ROM add-on for the SNES and a hybrid console capable of playing both cartriges and discs, called the 'Play Station'. Eventually the partnership fell through, with Nintendo announcing it's end the day after Sony had announced it's existence. Nintendo then partnered with Phillips, but that didn't work out either. These events would lead to the release of the CD-i Zelda games and Hotel Mario; and, of course, to the creation of the Sony PlayStation.

It may be that my first video game memory and one of my overall first memories ever is me playing Street Fighter II original version with my brother in the SNES but M.Bison/Vega/Dictator is ingrained in my brain as an impossibly iconic villain that I remember fondly, but then I think a bit more about it and he's like a dude in a bright red uniform two sizes too small for him whose entire personality is Cartoon Villain, but then I think a bit more MORE about it and he created the Psycho Crusher and the Knee Press so he's still super cool anyway.

also itoi wrote earthbound, which features tony, a gay kid. it's not addressed overtly in the game, but writing a gay youth into your 1994 SNES game published by nintendo is still a bold move. dude's always been a real one when it comes to queers.

random information about sam:
he still burns CDs, and has a portable CD player to listen to them on. he very rarely remembers to bring it with him, though
he swims, and surfs, and plays beach volleyball (summer is his favourite season and beach sports reign supreme)
he’s into ALL the dad bands: weezer, radiohead, blur, the cure, oasis, etc. blame kent.
the first song he ever learned on guitar was achy breaky heart by billy ray cyrus tho LOL he started learning to play when he was like 8
his fave song is undone (the sweater song) by weezer but he actually listens to quite a lot of different genres including ska
he just loves music so much no matter what music it is
also a massive video games nerd, generally plays on PC but used to visit Abby and play on her SNES with her and Sebastian all the time as kids
that boy has ADHD but nobody realised it when he was a kid, it’s only now he’s an adult he’s starting to learn actual coping mechanisms for it. I don’t think Jodi would like the idea of him going on meds for it so he probably tries to avoid that, at least in the first few years after he finds out
he always carries round a spare lighter/papers/filters for sebastian because he is deeply in love with him a good friend
he drops his phone like 3x a day, it is SO bashed up but it still works so his parents have given up trying to prevent it. he had one of those military-grade anti-drop cases at one point and managed to break it.
he has a raggedy old friendship bracelet Vincent made for him at school and he never takes it off. that kid means the WORLD to him dude
I think he would really like the movie Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure

I made a zine! About a fictional videogame! Sponsored by a dear industry friend, who I approached while panicking about my food insecurity and bills.
WO, the Zine, is the reprint of the instruction manual of a videogame made for the AKASA Entertainment System stands as evidence for the existence of Hole Eye Games, a developer who went bankrupt shortly after the release of said game. WO, panned by critics as being too dark for its core audience, is mostly forgotten by the casual player, though it has developed something of a cult following in the passing decades. Hole Eye Games' other titles fared no better, and are mostly forgotten. However, WO might have just saved two kids who chanced upon it in their late teens. WO, the zine, reprints the game's manual in its entirety, including the handwritten notes of Fiver (Jonah Lovelace) and Rosary Sepulchur (James Patron) as they traded the cartridge and the booklet back and forth during the darkest days of their lives. Solace can come in the strangest forms. Sometimes, it comes as a videogame about being a giant rabbit and climbing into your best friend/crush's corpse to defeat Satan.
If you want your own copy, you can buy it here!
It's 48-pages long, full color, glossy cool paper and stuff. I'd be super grateful for any support you can give, and spreading the word. I'm too shy to talk about my stuff. I don't even know where I should be talking about it.
Fun fact: I broke my left arm (my radial neck) and my right hand (my trapezium) while in the process of making this. Not due to the process (it was a stupid skating accident where a giant dude barreled into me hockey-style), but the fact it's actually been made and is out now is something of a miracle to me.
Another fun fact: the printing studio I hired for the project was so helpful, understanding, and knew what I wanted to a T. And the weirdest thing is, I found them from a ten year old Reddit post where they were discussing making a SNES-style manual with another Reddit user. I sent them a message, and what'd you know, it turned out they live in the same country and the same province as I do. What are the odds?
Thanks so much for reading this far! Videogames were my main source of escapism through a very rough childhood, and have continued to be, and I felt I owed that its due homage. I also wanted to emulate what it feels like to love something that may be critically panned for being unentertaining, but is still very dear to your heart because of what it means to you and your friends. I'll stop yapping now. Thank you so much. ❤️

So my friend sent me this link to a youtube video about why the TotK lore isn't interesting. I couldn't get through it without a ten-screen discord rant (on my PC monitor, not my phone) so I thought I would put some thoughts here.
I don't delve too deep into TotK story but there are def some spoilery statements below, consume at your own risk.
The initial assumptions here seem to be that (1) BotW was more respectful of "The Lore" than TotK, and that (2) TotK made some unforgiveable sins that BotW absolutely avoided.
Both of these are completely false. And I am NOT saying that neither BotW nor TotK shat upon accepted lore. They did. There is no recovering the Hyrule Historia timeline, objectively. Instead I contend that the truth is the precise opposite: Nintendo has NEVER actually cared to try to make LoZ games have ANY amount of continuity.
Take the slide at the 5 minute mark of the video linked, above, in which we see the Master Sword was created specifically to be used against Ganon, and then the 7 sages set out to find somebody valiant enough to wield it (this is from the user manual of A Link to the Past, from the SNES, which also was about The Imprisoning War). Which, if you're playing the home game, you know got ret'conned TWELVE YEARS AGO by Skyward Sword. He's using the slide to explain why it was ridiculous that Ganondorf was able to shatter the Master Sword in the prologue to TotK, which tells me they didn't pay much attention to the mechanic in BotW in which the Master Sword "runs out of power" if you use it too much. If Ganon is an aspect of Demise (again from Skyward Sword, far more recent lore than the slide being used in the vid) then the secret stone he's wielding is amplifying DEMISE (WAY stronger than just some dude), which is why he's able to shatter the blade - but still isn't enough to destroy the sword. His entire complaint about the Sword being broken suggests to me he either didn't play Skyward Sword or has forgotten it existed, and has DEFINITELY forgotten the 'weapons breaking' mechanic started in BotW.
He makes another complaint later about there not being an explanation for the disappearance of the Divine Beasts. Which, sure. I wondered what happened, and figured the 5ish years since then made it old news nobody was talking about it anymore. I get why that might have been a breaking point for somebody else. But it's not just a TotK problem; BotW didn't address it, either. We see the Divine Beasts being dug up by the Sheikah in Rhoam's flashback - how did they get buried? The towers shoot out of the ground, how did THEY get buried, after the last calamity? Who put the guardians underground? How? HOW, if nobody is allowed into the tunnels under Hyrule Castle? It didn't get explained for BotW, so why is that an unforgivable sin in TotK? They give more than a passing suggestion that Purah has repurposed the guardians - just LOOK at the Skyview Towers. The jumpscare for BotW players when you get grabbed in the Lookout Landing tower TELLS YOU where the guardians went.
There is a significant section in which video creator is quoting an interview I haven't seen (and don't give two shits about), and I think it needs to be said: what is in the game is canon. What is in the interviews from other people is, by definition, not game canon. If it was meant to be game canon it would be in the game. Neil Gaiman talks about this when people ask him for clarification of his stories, go check his FAQ if you want a really good delineation of canon from somebody with way more clout than me.
So let's just look at the lore he's defending from BotW. The map is wrong. Straight up wrong, from all the earlier Zelda games. Nintendo cannot decide where the Lost Woods should be, much less Spectacle Rock. The Temple of Time, which again is mentioned early on as a clear homage to the lore, is in the wrong damn spot. If this is the new Hyrule formed post-WindWaker (as indicated by the existance of Rito), the Temple of Time should have been destroyed. And why do the Rito and the Zora both exist? According to WindWaker, the Rito evolved from the Zora, who couldn't live in the salt of the sea. Which is a pretty big jump from the original game that had Zora in the ocean, and the two games following THAT in which they were straight-up monsters. I don't want to get into ALL the ways BotW breaks from the established lore, but there's a LOT. They don't mention the fucking Triforce ONCE, ffs, that's sort of a big damn deal.
I get there was a canon timeline published in Hyrule Historia. I bought that book for that exact reason. And, as someone who has loved this franchise since I got that first golden cartridge in 1987, I looked at that timeline once, laughed at it, and moved on with my life. BotW de-canonized that timeline already, in a LOT of ways.
So saying that TotK is evidence that Nintendo no longer cares about continuity or lore, and by NOT villifying BotW (or TP or SS) for the exact same problem is disingenuous at best. Saying that TotK is just nostalgia-baiting is ignoring the BotW map (Lake Saria, anyone? Ranch Ruins, anyone?) in general, as well as all the game-specific loot that had NO other reason to be there but straight-up nostalgia. The only reason for Zelda to mention the other heroes in the blessing we hear in the first memory is to (1) destroy the established timeline (skyward bound, adrift in time, or something about twilight, all in a world where Rito exist), or (2) prey on our nostalgia. TotK isn't any worse for putting the WW shirt and the Awakening armor into the game, in terms of wrecking the timeline or trying to feast on our nostalgia.
I'm not going to try to hypothesize what this person (or all his commenters) didn't like about the game, or why they're so willing to overlook all these problems in BotW to villify TotK. And everybody is welcome to like to dislike a game for whatever reason they want, IDGAF, you do you. What I AM saying is that for someone who's upset about the lore, he really doesn't seem to actually be aware of how inconsistent it's ALWAYS been. If TotK is the game that taught you that Nintendo isn't trying to follow their own lore, then I don't think you have been paying attention to the lore for a good long time.
tl;dr this is still my favorite series and if you hate that it breaks its own continuity then you've been asleep for the last 12 years of lore drops my good dude.

I have a real bug bear with this strange assumption I see in a lot of online discussion of Engage. That if you didn’t like Engage’s story you must be some Three Houses newbie who doesn’t know what Fire Emblem is.
My dude, this ain’t my first rodeo. I’ve played a pretty good chunk of the series at this point. I played Blazing Blade and Sacred Stones. I played Awakening and Shadows of Valentia. More recently I finished both Tellius games and Genealogy of the Holy War. I know Fire Emblem writing can and has been far better than whatever the hell they were doing with Engage. Hell, I like Three Houses but I don’t think it’s the best Fire Emblem story by a long shot. I could write a whole other piece on my complicated relationship with that game’s writing.
Playing the other games just better highlights to me how Engage is definitely trying to tell a story that harkens back to those games, but routinely comes up short. It wants to be breezy and colourful like the GBA games, but its aesthetic and character design is far less cohesive than any of those three games. It wants to cleverly marry gameplay with story like the SNES Jugdral games but is too scared to let its player punches last longer than a chapter. It wants to key into Awakening’s simple yet heartfelt nostalgic template but fails to clear even that middling bar due to an inability to set up any of its big emotional moments. It repurposes multiple plot points and story concepts from Fates, but doesn’t really improve on any of its shortcomings in setup and character writing.
Most of all, it’s at war with itself, unable to decide whether to be a campy romp that is pure self indulgent fanservice, or a more heartfelt story with genuine dramatic moments. It opens with a wonderfully cheesy tokusatsu esque transformation sequence and never reaches that level of camp again until near the very end. Meanwhile, there are rare moments of genuinely good character stuff. But they’re the exception to the rule as most of the story’s big emotional moments are utterly lacking in buildup. The writers just had a cool scene in mind and didn’t bother to put the work in to earn any of them. What we get is an uncanny valley that ends up simply being boring. It’s too dry and self serious to embrace its naive camp. And it’s too phoned in and sloppily written to really be earnest. There’s a burgeoning theme of family and self identity that’s begging to be explored more but never goes anywhere. Between Alear’s past and hints of a character arc, the clumsy half integration of the Emblems, and other half formed concepts and characters like Veyle, Lumera and Sombron, Engage is a story with a finger in several pies at once, but never placing more than the tip on any of them.
It’s not ‘just a simple story’. Shadows of Valentia and Sacred Stones are simple stories. Engage is honestly one of the more out there and wild plots in the series. Nor is it ‘not taking itself seriously’. It’s absolutely trying to make you feel something. But it rushes through and fumbles every good idea it has. Engage reminds me more of modern Pokémon than anything. It wants to play at being a big RPG. It wants to make you sit through hours and hours of cutscenes, give you a huge colourful cast of characters, and end on a big anime-esque finale. But its dialogue and cutscenes are flat, the characters never hit their full potential, and the big hype moments are totally unearned and out of left field.
If Engage’s story really was just safe and simple, I wouldn’t even mind. If it had more respect for the player’s time, and trimmed down its cutscene length, acknowledging that it’s not doing anything ambitious and just letting you get to the gameplay quicker, that would be fine. Conversely, if it actually did go all the way with any of its half formed themes and characters, it could be genuinely interesting. Hell, it could even have a been a totally bat shit, campy spectacle thar leaned utterly into the cheese and I’d probably have loved it. But it’s none of those things. It’s just incompetently put together. Sloppy, irritating and painfully dry.
The unending Three Houses Vs Engage discourse just misses the forest for the trees. That not only has Fire Emblem not fixed it’s worst writing habits in over 10 years, they’ve actually gotten worse.
It’s apparently too much to ask for a story that can walk the line between falling apart under the weight of its own ambition, or doing the bare minimum and relying on melodramatic spectacle to hide its own shallowness.
It’s too much to ask for a game that is able to give its main character real depth and flaws to grapple with because that would get in the way of the player’s power fantasy, letting them feel like the world’s most special little chosen one who everyone loves unconditionally.
It’s too much to ask for a 50 hour RPG with over 7 hours of cutscenes to reach even the standard level of acceptable-to-good generic fantasy writing that most of its franchise’s predecessors reached.
Engage’s story isn’t a ‘return to form’ because it’s ‘simple.’ It’s not ‘prioritising gameplay over story’. They were trying to tell a story and failed, nothing more to it. It’s an anniversary game that tries to harken back to the series’ past but only repeats its worst qualities with none of the strengths.

Guile's Theme:
You do not know the LENGTHS I went to verify which version of Guile's Theme this is. I literally thought this was some midi cover made by some dude but then I saw this was actually the snes version. But I was like "hmmm the snes version sounds a bit different tho" then I realized that the different versions of street fighter II uses different sound fonts or instruments or whatever. You might be thinking "didnt we already establish that there are different versions of sf2?" ohohohoho I'm not talking about the different console versions no no. I'm talking about shit like super street fighter II turbo or street fight II champion addition, the different versions that were released on the same fucking systems. There are FOUR different versions of street fighter II just on the snes and the arcade version has six! Anyways this is the Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers on the snes released in Japan on June 25, 1994 version goddamnit. The shit I do just to fact check a song that's been meme'd to hell and back.

Hey dudes, i think you deserve to listen to more of my music (WHEN I REMEMBER THAT I HAVE BANGERS STORED IN MY PC RAAAAAAGHGGHGHGHGHGHGHGHH) [<-very angry] It's not a full version though, this piece was to test out some instruments and it kinda grew on me, so i decided to save it as a new version of the song. The song will have snes sounds and it will came out... eventually. Let's pray for that day to come.
