one more opinion about star trek fashion

it actually shouldn’t look like stuff you would wear (or at least a lot of it shouldn’t)

i’ve seen a lot of praise for modern trek fashion being better than classic trek because ‘people would actually wear that’

look at what people wore as everyday fashion 200-300 years ago, would you wear it? probably not, maybe for the novelty of it, but definitely not every day.

like, yeah this stuff looks crazy

it’s 300 years in the future. some of them are aliens, makes perfect sense to me that they would wear ridiculous extravagant clothes that look strange to my 21st century eye

similar to how if you showed modern fashion (especially alternative fashion/runway fashion) to someone dressed like this,

they would probably think we’re crazy.

yet for some reason modern trek wants us to believe that hundreds of years into the future people still just wear zip up hoodies?

(idk if the spock fit actually is a hoodie or not but come on man, the zipper? nothing more futuristic than a zipper?)

or this dress that looks like i could buy it in a 21st century target?

(not to hate on chapel, she’s just the only one i can find decent pictures of out of uniform)

also why is everything so grey now? when was it decided that people don’t wear colors in the future? i can not find out of uniform pictures where any of these people wear color, all black, white, grey, and maybe a bit of muted green.

tldr

clothing design in star trek should be just as important as clothing design in a period piece. i don’t think a screencap from any star trek should look like it could just as easily take place in the 21st century, i should see some crazy outfits. the clothes can do a lot of the heavy lifting to remind us that this is supposed to be far in the future.

I've seen a lot of people claim that TOS is sexist because the women have to wear heels and a lot of makeup. Obviously, TOS is sexist in some ways but I think it's silly to use this as evidence. The men wear heels and a lot of makeup too.

Some examples:

It seems like it's standard for Romulan men to wear eyeshadow.

Evil Kirk wore a ton of eyeliner. He's shown putting on concealer/foundation. I feel like this could be used as evidence that the men wore makeup in universe and it wasn't just for filming purposes.

Sometimes fic authors dress Kirk and Spock up in ridiculous clothes. Like goths. Like 90s punks, whatever.

And for a second I think "they would never wear that!"

Then I remember all the stuff they wore in TOS and I have admit that yes, they WOULD wear that. They have worn stranger things. Gangster clothes. Nazi clothes. A harness.

So yeah put them in platform shoes and tiny shorts, it's the future, anything is possible!

This hilarious pink chair Saavik sits on. I think it's very cute, clamshell like - but kinda a funny starship/station (I don't actually know what are they on in this scene) decor choice, isn't it? It's giving boudoir.

Oddly enough, this clamshell kind of design is similar to Kirk's belt here. Again, it's not really space related, but I actually really like it. I think Kirk's outfit here is amazing. I want this belt!

This scene. This scene could be an opening to a gay porn. I think it's because of the mustache on the guy (and Sulu's whole swagger, of course). Don't tell me he doesn't look like he could in a Tom of Finland graphic.

Sarek's fuck ass breastplate. Ngl, this old man is slaying hard at his son's rebirthfuneral.

What religion do I have to sign up for in order to have sexy women dressed in gauze carrying my corpse? It's time sensitive.

Lastly - outfits!!!! I think this movie is one of best ones styling wise. (Although it's missing the disco Bones factor). I don't have good images of it to put here, but I love the scenes where the gang is breaking out Bones out of prison/psych ward and they all have semi matching brown leather jackets on (except Uhura). Sulu and Chekov is sporting theirs here.

Almost finished DS9 season 3. I have many thoughts to share

But mostly I've been thinking about Bashir in the red surgery outfit, so here are some thoughts on just that:

- He looks like a red chess piece

- Is it a dress

- Is he wearing pants under there

- love the matching red gloves 💅

- he served not only in a medical way, but also in a fashion way

- I don't think he's wearing pants under there

- Stadi is in a lab coat-style jacket; a sandy-yellow high-necked belted tunic embroidered with leaves; and pants in the same color. As always, his medkit is over his shoulder.

- Sanok has a pi’to-sai over a deep-blue high-necked pel’el with raised vertical seams down the center, shoulders, and the outer sides of sleeves; pants in same color with same seams on outer sides of legs; and his religious insignia.

Spock: His makeup was always flawless. Just look at that winged eyeliner. His outfits at the beginning of TMP were amazing too.

Amanda: Her outfits in Journey to Babel were fun and colorful and what she wore in TVH was so classy.

T'Pau: I have no words.

Sarek: I love all his outfits tbh. He's clearly where Spock learned how to make a dramatic entrance.

Perrin: Her outfits were BOLD. I love the giant gemstones and Vulcan script.

Sybok: Even his outfit was kinda cool, just a little worn. I honestly liked his ponytail.
