Imagine you have to do surgery on a Vulcan for the first time AND it’s the ambassador AND he’s your boyfriend’s dad AND your boyfriend’s mom is there AND the ship is shaking AND your boyfriend also might die because of experimental blood transfusion.
I swear Bones’ salary better be a trillion million dollars every second

reading collision course and I love the way they write spock's family arguments. sarek and spock go back and forth calmly declaring the other's point of view to be illogical until amanda has to intervene and cry, "stop it, you're tearing this family apart!" and demand they apologise, which obviously neither of them do. sarek doesn't want to give spock sensitive information because he wants to keep him safe, but spock interprets it as a lack of trust and a challenge to his vulcan nature. sarek calls his viewpoint flawed and hangs up on them. amanda turns to spock and assures him sarek didn't mean to be so nasty. in true teenage fashion, spock basically says yeah, right, then decides if he's not vulcan enough for his parents maybe he can be human enough for starfleet. spock ends things by basically half-disowning himself. it's just dysfunctional enough to be both funny and heartwrenching and I love it

Why are people always shocked that Amanda slapped Spock in ‘Journey to Babel’? Surely she must have known that Spock had previously committed mutiny for Pike, and now he wouldn’t go through a medical procedure for his father. Yes, I understand that they had not had a relationship for 18 years, but when she says the words “let your father die,” you can see that Spock cares about Sarek and about Amanda’s feelings.

Random Lore Alert! (for my life series star trek au)
Scott had a brother. However, for reasons, his brother grew up in the mirror universe. Scott doesn't know he *has* a brother. This brother is known as Xornoth
Joel's parents met through the operation mentioned in the TOS episode Journey to Babel- his andorian mom defected and served as a DNA model for making surgically modified orions pass as andorian. She and Joel's Orion mom, an andorian scientist fell in love through that.
Shelby is a trill (no symbiote) who was raised by humans. Her name was given to her by her baby sister who couldn't pronounce her given name "Shubble". Originally- it was more like "Shebbie" but settled on Shelby.
Pearl loving to draw on the tablet like Spock does and Gem adores waking up/walking into Pearl’s art flying through the air. Their room is VERY full of plants, but in a somehow neat way?, and anyone who goes in there is just like *glitter bomb to the face*. (they are roommates)
Joel is the CMO, but everyone likes Nurse BigB more- mostly because he bakes things for his patients.
Etho and Joel are not exactly close but like each other a lot. Whereas he and bdubs were friends before etho became so well known, joel 100% knows who he is but refuses to treat him any different than just some guy. Etho really appreciates this. Theyre both weird about each other and its great.

Journey To Babel is such a fun episode.
Sarek tries to be all like "Ah yes. humans... Thankfully I am Logical™,"
and then it cuts to him having a FREAKING HEART ATTACK
AND THEN
McCoy: "oh shit how many times has this happened?"
Amanda: "nev-"
Sarek: "okay, so I MAY have had three heart attacks on the way over-"
I DONT WANNA LAUGH AT YOUR SUFFERING BUT THREE??? YOU HAD THREE HEART ATTACKS AND JUST SPOKE TO YOUR DOCTOR AND WENT "IT'S PROBABLY NOT A BIG DEAL"-- WHAT?!

I love “Journey to Babel,” but I will always be annoyed that the writers made Kirk have to be informed that Sarek and Amanda were Spock’s parents. Are you telling me that Captain Jim Kirk didn’t know something like that? I’d argue that this is a continuity error because Kirk knew about Spock’s human mother in an earlier episode “This Side of Paradise” and, in the same episode, Spock says that his father is an ambassador. Even taking that episode away, and arguing that the information was somehow not in Spock’s personnel records, you can’t possibly claim that Captain Kirk didn’t get files on everyone onboard to review. Especially when he’s transporting people for a major diplomatic conference. And again, even if there was no mention in their records, it’s not like there are many Human/Vulcan marriages. The writers had Kirk make that comment so that Spock could reveal the information to the audience. They should have had another character’s comments be the catalyst for that discovery.

Obsessed with Journey to Babel being the episode where Vulcan hand kissing is introduced, and then being immediately followed by Friday's Child, in which we are gifted with a scene where Spock, upon catching sight of Dr McCoy holding a woman's hand, frowns the deepest frown of his life, and McCoy, upon seeing this reaction, yanks his hand away faster than the speed of light and looks as though he has just commited a mortal sin.
