“I’m offended by the entire project and the lack of respect given to me — who lived through a real story and is still living it." -Vili Fualaau, the inspiration for Joe Yoo in May December
I made a post last summer about being iffy on May December because the real life man this affected (Vili Fualaau) is still alive and dealing with his trauma, and he's finally speaking out about the movie. He said he admires films that handle the complexities of real-life events and would have been willing to work together with the crew to tell his story, but he was never contacted by any of the filmmakers.
The lead in May December is Natalie Portman's character and Joe (Fualaau) plays a supporting role in his own story. The screenwriter, Samy Burch, insists that the real life case of Mary Kay Letourneau taking advantage of Fualaau was just a "jumping off point" and not their story. How strange for a film that's supposed to be about how Hollywood exploits and hurts real life individuals for "art" to do the same thing in real life.
I hate that a poc who was preyed on by a white woman, has had his story twisted and exploited by another one almost 30 years later.
The difference between Archie OFMD and Eddie Redcliffe ist that Archie (18th century) somehow knows how to confidently pronounce the word "misogynistic" while Eddie (21st century) would absolutely stumble over every single syllable
i love that andy weir never kills his protagonists. it would be so easy to. at so many points. by all means they Should be dead. mark gets stranded on mars and the planet works against him at every turn. jazz's suit fails on the surface of the moon and she feels herself begin to die. ryland is sent on a suicide mission then gives up his chance at return for his friend. they should all have died. multiple times in some cases. but they don't!!! because weir isn't writing tragedies, he's writing stories of hope and humanity. they survive even when it should be impossible for them to because of connection. simple as that.
THAT JEY WALK-THROUGH LEADING US TO A SAMI/JEY MOMENT. SAMI TELLING US WHAT THIS BUILDING MEANS TO US. THEN WE FOLLOW SAMI BACK INTO THE ARENA AND TO THE RING AND THE FANS CHEERING HIM ON!
i was thinking about it, and i think that the reason Eddie works so well as a character despite (in the beginning especially) having the potential to be a VERY unlikeable, grating character, is that she’s pretty quickly shown to be genuinely smart and competent.
Like I’m someone who generally hates characters that fill the tropes she does, but when I was watching the show for the first time I remember that while I was frustrated by her I still cared about her. Like during the shack scene I was legit on edge bc I was scared she’d get hurt.
Like it would’ve been so easy to just make her an idiot, but they didn’t and by establishing that she’s smart within her first few minutes on screen (specifically her talk with James) completely saves her character from becoming unlikable imo, even when she’s acting like a dick.
Things in Season 3 would have been much different if a different commando squad were assigned to the Vault. Darman's missing his son, Niner's got that Mandalorian instinct to adopt everything he can see, and there are four children in that room. It would go like this:
One: They see the children
Darman: You remember how Kal'buir talks about Jedi being baby-stealers?
Niner: Yes.
Two: There is a very small amount of internal debate
Darman: Aww, that little one reminds me of Kad.
Niner: *Grabbing for the adoption papers that come with every set of Mandalorian and/or clone armor*
