Gay Educators Freak While Their Gay Students Cope in Neaptide
Gay Educators Freak While Their Gay Students Cope in Neaptide
Review: “UNC School of the Arts’ production of Neaptide” By Perry Tannenbaum In a twisted way, this once-in-a-lifetime pandemic year brought more to Ticket Knowlton’s senior year thesis than it took away. Slated to direct the UNC School of the Arts’ production of Neaptide by British feminist playwright Sarah Daniels, Knowlton lost the opportunity to interact with cast, crew, and design team in a…

What happened with mark and maureen in the nytw version?? I'm new to the fandom and SUPER curious about different versions of the show
Oh man I am SO GLAD you asked. So. First you should know that in the NYTW version Maureen is EXPLICITLY a lesbian - “I’m over men”, refers to herself as the d-word, repeatedly says she won’t go back to Mark whereas in later versions like Bway her sexuality is more ambiguous & closer to bi.
This is important because Mark in the NYTW version is just...kind of a dick? No not kind of, he IS a dick. The song where he goes to fix Maureen’s equipment is called “You’ll Get Over It” and is Maureen saying Mark will get over her, and Mark saying she’ll get over her lesbian phase. It’s really catchy but for obvious reasons super problematic. (Obviously the show never says this Mark is RIGHT.) He just keeps saying things like “This is just a phase, like girls and horses!” “You never even wore flannel shirts! / You never even liked K.D. Lang!”
And then in La Vie Bohème, OH BOY. He fucking ASKS MAUREEN TO HAVE SEX WITH HIM IN THE BATHROOM. Maureen, of course, refuses since she is a lesbian and tells him off. (In the demo they DO have sex in the bathroom.)
By the end of the show he gets a little better but he does also follow up Mimi & Roger’s I Should Tell You moment with “I finished the film” and Maureen just goes “that’s great” in the most sarcastic tone imaginable. Sarah Knowlton is really good at this more sarcastic Maureen, but I understand why Idina replaced her later.
Mark is also more of an activist, as I’ve mentioned, and when Alison keeps degrading homeless people he defends them - “Last year filthy bum!” “Person!” “Okay, filthy person!” - but with Maureen, he’s just...a horny bastard of a straight man.
Maureen isn’t too much better, her relationship with Joanne is a lot more unhealthy in this version, and that comes from Joanne too. But she at least isn’t like Mark.

There was actually the glimmer of a tear on his eyelashes. They also have little patience for ambiguity, so directions during feedback sessions must be clear and specific. And there are plenty of other schools out there with less than fully funded programs.. “They have followed worse. A couple of days later, the network released an anthem that was run across the network. And if he did get out, where would he go? His father was dead, and his uncles had no use for him. I ask myself and I can’t answer. I told her our whole story; how for my sake you’d abandoned your home; how we’d been living together, how harassed we were now, how afraid of everything, and that now we were appealing to her (I spoke in your name too, Natasha), that she would take our side, and tell her stepmother straight out that she nike jean jacket wouldn’t marry me; that that would be our one salvation, and that we had nothing to hope for from anyone else. I shall tell you something perhaps. What my feelings were when I reached the free shore can be better imagined than described. The camera app is pretty quick to snap open though. It's even harder for those with children.. You mention you're in good physical shape, have you done a little research on the MINIMUM to pass basic training before going to OCS? 2 mile run in 17 minutes or less according to my recruiter as of today, basic training, not OCS. Information on Hale siblings.
I went and dug farther into the lives of Nathan Hale’s siblings as I needed it for TUCUFM. I had information but I decided to go even deeper in some research. Next, I will be doing Benjamin Tallmadge’s siblings.
Samuel Hale (May 25th, 1747 - April 17th, 1824)
Joined the Continental Army.
Had severe PTSD after the war and in result became introverted and was unable to interact with people in any way.
His younger brother David managed his estate starting in 1824 to sell his land after he’d died
Tumblr media
John B. Hale (October 21st, 1748 - December 22nd, 1802)
Is the only Hale with a portrait done excepting their father that had been discovered.
Possibly was a lieutenant in Knowlton’s rangers during the American Revolution.

He served then as a lieutenant under Colonel Ely in 1777.
He met Rebeckah Harris during this time, daughter of prominent judge Joseph Harris in New London and they married on October 21st, 1778. They returned to Coventry and bought a house near Richard’s and had four children.
Joseph was assigned the northwest chamber of Richard’s house on his deathbed of consumption.
His family lived at the Hale house after his death.

Elizabeth “Eliza” Hale (January 1st, 1751 - October 31st, 1813)
After her mother’s death, Eliza took over many duties in the house.
Made clothing for her siblings and Nathan was wearing her clothes when he started his fateful spy mission.
The first man she married was Dr. Samuel Rose on December 30th 1773 in Coventry. With him she mothered three children: Nathan Rose, Fanny Rose and another child (the name is unknown).
After her first husband, Dr. Rose died she remarried to John Taylor and had two more children: Betsey Taylor and one other (name unknown).

New Report Details Pervasive Culture of Racism at Bon Appétit: ‘Nowhere Have I Ever Felt More Isolated’
Tumblr media
More than a dozen employees shared their experiences of working in the allegedly “toxic,” exclusionary culture of the food magazine. | Photo by JP Yim/Getty Images for Band of Outsiders
Published by Business Insider, the report describes a “toxic” workplace in which people of color are regularly sidelined, paid less, and tokenized
On June 8, Bon Appétit editor-in-chief Adam Rapoport resigned from the publication after a photo resurfaced showing him and his wife dressed up as Puerto Ricans for Halloween. The photo, which circulated on Twitter, prompted employees and contributors to speak publicly about the culture of racial inequity that’s allegedly existed at Bon Appétit for years. The following night, on June 9, Business Insider published a report by Rachel Premack detailing how, beneath the Condé Nast food magazine’s glossy surface, lies a “toxic” culture of racism and exclusion, with more than a dozen former and current staffers of color detailing their experiences.
According to the report, sources described “a workplace that treats people of color as second class to white employees,” denying equal opportunities to nonwhite employees, excluding them from cliques at the magazine, and consistently failing to adequately tell diverse stories.
Ryan Walker-Hartshorn, Rapoport’s assistant since September 2017, told Business Insider that Rapoport has treated her like “the help” as the only Black woman on staff. She alleged that she not only had editorial duties, but also had to do tasks for Rapoport outside of her job description, including cleaning Rapoport’s golf clubs. Business Insider reports that Walker-Hartshorn went to human resources twice to request that Rapoport limit these personal errands and stop texting her on the weekend, but despite HR’s instructions to stop the texts, Rapoport allegedly continued.
Meanwhile, Walker-Hartshorn’s base salary of $35,300 stayed the same in her nearly three years at Bon Appétit — a scant annual pay for New York’s high prices, but unfortunately common in the magazine and publishing industry, which is notorious for barely livable early-career wages. Walker-Hartshorn told Business Insider that she asked Rapoport for a raise in early June, aware that her boss knew she hadn’t been able to pay rent for three months. Instead, according to Walker-Hartshorn, Rapoport told her, “Well, maybe you should consider that this is not the right job for you.” (On another occasion early in her tenure, Walker-Hartshorn alleged, Rapoport told her that he wanted his coffee “like Rihanna,” apparently in reference to the singer’s skin color.)
Bon Appétit’s wildly successful YouTube video efforts have also been rife with inequity, employees allege. Sohla El-Waylly, an assistant food editor, revealed in her Instagram stories on Monday that she has been “pushed in front of video as a display of diversity” without receiving compensation, as “only white editors are paid for their video appearances.” El-Waylly wrote that, despite her 15 years of professional experience, she accepted the role “to assist mostly white editors with significantly less experience” at a salary of $50,000. She told BuzzFeed News that soon she was asked to do a lot more work than just the recipe cross-testing that had been listed in the job description: “I was brought on to do this one job, and I’ve kind of taken on the role of a senior editor, contributing to all of the verticals in print and video.”

— Sarah Manavis (@sarahmanavis) June 8, 2020
El-Waylly also told BuzzFeed News that she was asked to “stand in the background of photo shoots and video shoots,” apparently to help bolster the brand’s appearance of diversity. Over the past 10 months, she has appeared in multiple videos, often participating in multi-staffer challenges or helping mostly white talent who headline their own shows, and thus are compensated through separate contracts with Conde Nast Entertainment. El-Waylly told Business Insider that she didn’t receive an on-air contract, despite asking Rapoport and video head Matt Duckor — who is himself facing criticism for unearthed tweets mocking people of color and queer people — on multiple occasions, until she publicly aired her issues on Monday. An hour later, Duckor sent her a contract that would add $20,000 to her now-$60,000 base salary, an offer that El-Waylly said she was “insulted and appalled” by, knowing what other on-camera coworkers allegedly make.
The diversity issues also extend beyond Bon Appétit’s videos, which have been criticized for their lack of nonwhite representation, as well as misrepresenting and appropriating the non-American and Eurocentric foods that they do show. “There have been calls for years to diversify the videos, to diversify the staff, to diversify the content, but nothing happens,” Rick Martinez, a Bon Appétit contributor and former senior food editor, told Business Insider. He said that he felt pressure to keep making food from his own Mexican American background, despite fears of being “pigeonholed.” Andrew Knowlton, a former deputy editor of the magazine, allegedly “once asked Martinez whether he was ‘a one-trick pony’ because of his focus on Mexican cuisine” and “told Martinez that his job developing Mexican recipes must have been easier because of his childhood eating his mother’s cooking,” Business Insider reported.

Sources also described an atmosphere of exclusion, with mostly “young, attractive, mostly white or white-adjacent … and upper-middle class” employees, some of whom were decidedly in the “in crowd” at the publication. “You see your coworkers every day of your life, and to go into work every day and feel isolated is misery-inducing … Nowhere have I ever felt more isolated than at Bon Appétit,” said Nikita Richardson, a Black former employee who now writes for New York magazine. She recalled a day in early 2017, when she and another nonwhite staffer, Alyse Whitney, had been in Bon Appetit’s famed test kitchen, chatting with two white staffers. They said that later that day, they received an email from Carla Lalli Music, then-food director and currently an editor at large, telling them and other staffers not to visit the test kitchen again without permission. But white staffers continued to go to the test kitchen, apparently without consequence, Whitney alleged.

In response to Business Insider’s queries, Conde Nast refuted the claim that nonwhite video talent were “not paid for their work,” and wrote that the company has a “zero-tolerance policy toward discrimination and harassment in all forms.” In a staff meeting, the Daily Beast’s Max Tani reported, Conde Nast CEO Roger Lynch said that the company is “accelerating our first ever diversity and inclusion report” (n.b. Conde Nast has existed since 1909) to be published later this summer, and a pay-equity analysis, to be published at the end of the year.
On June 10, Bon Appetit and its sister brand Epicurious published an apology, stating:
We have been complicit with a culture we don’t agree with and are committed to change. Our mastheads have been far too white for far too long. As a result, the recipes, stories, and people we’ve highlighted have too often come from a white-centric viewpoint. At times we have treated non-white stories as “not newsworthy” or “trendy.” Other times we have appropriated, co-opted, and Columbused them. While we’ve hired more people of color, we have continued to tokenize many BIPOC staffers and contributors in our videos and on our pages. Many new BIPOC hires have been in entry-level positions with little power, and we will be looking to accelerate their career advancement and pay. Black staffers have been saddled with contributing racial education to our staffs and appearing in editorial and promotional photo shoots to make our brands seem more diverse. We haven’t properly learned from or taken ownership of our mistakes. But things are going to change.
What that change entails, according to the post, includes prioritizing people of color for the now-open role of editor-in-chief, implementing anti-racism training, resolving pay inequities, hiring more freelancers of color and launching columns written by people of color, shifting coverage to “center, rather than patronize” marginalized people, revamping the recipe development process, and more broadly, “dismantling the toxic, top-down culture that has hurt many members of our staff.”
“This is just the start. We want to be transparent, accountable, and active as we begin to dismantle racism at our brands,” the post reads.

Fall 2017: Week 6
blog post by ann (SFPC 2017)
It was yet another packed week for SFPC students as they enter the home stretch of the program. Students learned about loading and creating images in openFrameworks with Zach Lieberman, discussed privacy with Morehshin Allahyari and guest speaker Sarah Aoun, got their first taste of Arduino with Pam Liou, looked at computer generated books with Nick Montfort and still managed to squeeze in a microlecture by artist-in-residence Golan Levin, a lecture on Origami by TA Robby Kraft, and a sushi making dinner led by student Colin Wang! Phew!
Day 1: Images, Mosaics, and Ken Knowlton
Students started their week by discussing the programs they wrote exploring typography and repetition for the previous week’s homework.
Tumblr media
Next, Zach gave lecture on artist and computer graphics pioneer Ken Knowlton. In 1963 while at Bell Labs, Knowlton developed a program called BEFLIX (Bell Flicks) that generated animated films using bitmap images. During his time at Bell, he worked closely with artists such as Stan VanDerBeek — using the BEFLIX to create Poemfields — and Lillian Schwartz — creating Pixillation with another Knowlton language called EXPLOR.
However, Knowlton is perhaps best known for his mosaic portraits, which use objects, images, or letters as tesserae.
To create his portrait mosaics, Knowlton developed an algorithm that would analyze the color and pattern of a given object and match it to a target image, and produce a mapping of tessera to his desired final image.
Tumblr media
Zach used Knowlton’s work as a jumping off point to demonstrate loading and generating images in openFrameworks. In the image below, Zach maps the brightness of every tenth pixel in the original image (left) to the radius of a circle in the computer generated image (right).
Day 2: Privacy and Surveillance and Guest Speaker Sarah Aoun
Day 2 began with a lecture by guest speaker Sarah Aoun. Sarah is a data activist, operational security trainer, and programmer. Her work lies at the intersection of tech, human rights, and transformative justice. She’s collaborated with activists, journalists, grassroots social movements, and NGOs in the US and MENA region on digital security, ethical data & privacy, and data-driven storytelling. Sarah grew up in Lebanon and holds a B.A. in International Relations from Brown University.
Sarah talked about the history of surveillance and it’s roots in colonialism, empire, and the oppression of black and brown bodies. She discussed the origin of the fingerprint and how the first wide-scale use of the fingerprint was by the English in the mid-1800s on contracts made with locals in India. At the time, English colonists began requiring fingerprints on all contracts with locals not for any scientific purpose, but to “frighten [them] out of all thought of repudiating [their] signature.”
Tumblr media
Sarah later talked about how surveillance is still closely tied to racism today. She discussed the use of floodlights in predominantly black neighborhoods in New York City, digital redlining on Facebook, and the problematic practice of predictive policing.
Later, two students, Kaitlin Schaer and Diego Salinas presented on the right to privacy and surveillance.
Day 3 (morning): Intro to Arduino
Day 3 was the students’ first class on Arduino with Pam Liou. Pam kicked things off with a lecture about microcontrollers. She explained that a microcontroller is a programmable chip. The Arduino is an open-source electronics platform that consists of a microcontroller (the hardware) and an IDE (integrated development environment — the software) that makes the chip easy to program and control.
Tumblr media
Pam also talked about how information is sent to and from a microcontroller. When data is sent between two devices, in order for the receiver to know when a unit of data begins and ends, the two devices must establish a synchronization protocol. In other words, thetwo devices must agree on how to read the stream of data.
Pam then discussed two ways that this can be accomplished:
When data is transferred “synchronously,” the sender sends a clock signal alongside the data. This means a special line for the clock signal is required.
When data is transferred “asynchronously,” the sender and receiver agree on a data transfer speed prior to data transfer, and sync their own internal systems accordingly. In order to ensure accuracy, the sender and receiver need to re-sync their clocks periodically during the data transfer process which can slow the rate of transfer.
“Like a murder of crows or a swarm of bees, there are a byte of bits.” — Pam Liou
Finally, Pam led the students in several different intro Arduino sketches. She began with a blinking LED (the “hello world” of hardware), and then got everyone set up with a node.js server to test out sending and receiving data to the Arudino from the web.
Day 3 (afternoon): Microlecture on springs with Golan Levin, Origami with Robby Kraft, and Family Dinner!
After class with Pam, Golan delivered a microlecture on springs. As part of his time as an artist-in-residence at SFPC, Golan Levin has been giving a series of microlectures on everything from interactivity to easing functions.
Tumblr media
According to Golan, springs are the essential element of interactivity and lifelike movement. Springs are endlessly useful, and can be combined in various ways to produce almost any movement desired.
SFPC TA Robby Kraft also gave a mini-lecture about his origami program, which he also delivered at this year’s Strangeloop conference. He talked about the history of origami software, and his journey from expert origami folder to origami designer.
“If you don’t invent a new technique then what you’re making probably isn’t new.” — Philip Glass
Tumblr media
Lastly, SFPC student (and former sushi chef) Colin Wang taught students how to roll their own sushi. The results were delicious and didn’t last on the plate for very long!
Tumblr media
Day 4: Computer Generated Books
For their second code poetry class with Nick Montfort, students started by discussing 280-character python programs they had written for homework. Together, they discussed the purpose and meaning of the program, and refactored the code in realtime.
Tumblr media
Next, Nick shared a selection of computer-generated books from his collection. Students broke off into small groups which were each given a single text to examine and discuss. After a few minutes, the class reconvened to share what they had discovered. Books ranged from Update by Bill Kennedy and Darren Wershler-Henry which scrapes Facebook status updates to generate fictional “statuses” for deceased poets, to Nick’s Autopia which arranges car names into surreal statements.
Bonus! Trip to MIT for Processing Day
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Saturday October 21st, a group of students went to Processing Community Day at MIT Media Lab, organized by Taeyoon Choi. Among the presenters were Guillermo Montecinos, current student of SFPC.
And last but not least, more pictures and a video of Week 6 by Yumi Nishida!

How to Get an Illustration Rep
Working with an illustration rep might not be for everybody, but for those who are interested, an agent can be a great asset. But how does an illustrator go about finding a rep? Let’s discuss the ways your work can stand out from the crowd.
Become established
The first thing to note is that it can be difficult for someone just starting out in their career to find a rep. For the most part, agents are typically interested in taking on illustrators who have already established themselves to a certain degree. This doesn’t mean that you need to have worked for the highest profile clients in the world, but you do need to have some jobs under your belt. If you haven’t done any freelance work yet or have only worked for a few small clients, it might not be the time to do an agent search. Consider building up your client list and portfolio a bit first before pressing forward.
Be irresistible
Regardless of whether or not you’re established, finding a rep shouldn’t be any problem if you offer something so amazing that an agent knows he or she will be able to sell it. This could be:
A killer portfolio that’s marketable, unique.
An idea that an agent feels is so strong he or she wouldn’t have any problems finding a buyer, like an awesome children’s picture book, or a middle grade novel, or a unique product.
Enough promise and drive that an agent feels like the effort of nurturing your career would be worth the time and effort it would take him or her.
Get a referral
While most illustration reps have an open door policy towards submissions, you can find more success if your work comes to them through a friend. If you can get a referral from an associate who’s already represented by the same agency, do that before hitting the general “submit” button on an agent’s website. Your chances will be a lot better.
Don’t be a creep
Agent relationships are like every other kind of relationship in the world. If you come off like a nutcase who’s difficult to work with or you have unrealistic expectations, that can be a huge turnoff. When approaching agents, make sure to keep the ego in check and not seem like you’d be an overly demanding client who’d suck their time and energy. Have good work, a positive outlook, and a willingness to listen and learn.
Let them come to you
Finally, you might not even need to search for an illustration rep at all! If you focus on your work and building your brand, eventually—if your art gets enough exposure and is of outstanding quality—agents will seek you out instead. For many, that’s the best way to go about this process.
Final thoughts
One thing to note before you begin, though, is that, while we’ve discussed things you can do to find a rep, we haven’t actually talked about whether or not it even makes sense for you to have one.

[caption id=“attachment_1097598” align=“alignnone” width=“640”] (Ảnh: Gerald Herbert/AP)[/caption]
[caption id=“attachment_1097611” align=“alignnone” width=“640”] (Ảnh: Al Drago/Getty)[/caption]
[caption id=“attachment_1097599” align=“alignnone” width=“620”] (Ảnh: Chip Somodevilla /Getty)[/caption]

As Saudi Arabia Destroys Religious Sites, One Rights Group Seeks to Save a Culture - MIDDLE EAST, OPINION
New Post has been published on https://citizentruth.org/as-saudi-arabia-destroys-religious-sites-one-rights-group-seeks-to-save-a-culture/
As Saudi Arabia Destroys Religious Sites, One Rights Group Seeks to Save a Culture
Saudi Arabia is destroying religious and cultural sites across the country, but one group, the Al Baqee Organization, is fighting to preserve a heritage.
October is not a good month for Saudi Arabia … but then again the Kingdom somewhat had it coming if we consider the violence it has so freely dispensed over the decades. If Saudi Arabia managed to buy loyalties and influence – none stronger than that extended by the United States of America – Riyadh’s systematic disregard for human rights, nations’ sovereignty, and international law, are pushing many to reconsider their positions.
As the Associated Press puts it:
“The kingdom long has been known to grab rambunctious princes or opponents abroad and spirit them back to Riyadh on private planes. But the disappearance of Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi, who Turkish officials fear has been killed, potentially has taken the practice to a new, macabre level by grabbing a writer who could both navigate Saudi Arabia’s byzantine royal court and explain it to the West.”
The alleged murder of writer Jamal Khashoggi is of course but a small example of the cruelty of a regime which barbarism has been emboldened by our collective silence – a silence rooted in greed since it was bought to the tune of billions of dollars.
Saudi Arabia’s lobbying activities took to new heights in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 when news transpired that 15 out the 19 terrorists were, in fact, Saudi citizens.
To protect its interests and avoid answering uncomfortable questions as to the doctrine of Wahhabism/Salafism it has imposed as ‘state religion’ on its citizens, the Kingdom went on to buy the world’s good graces. To better smooth corners and deflect blame away from its fanaticism – the fanaticism that remains the so-called Islamic radical outfits’ main ideological inspiration, Riyadh spent a reported $100 million over the next decade to improve public perceptions and retain influence in the U.S. capital.
A detailed report published in the Atlantic gives an overview of Saudi Arabia’s lobbying activities. It reads:
“A quick review of the FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act) database, which is where lobbyists who advocate for foreign countries must announce themselves, shows that, among other Washington firms, Hill & Knowlton, Inc. has been lobbying for Saudi Arabia from 1982 until at least 2009. Qorvis Communications, LLC has received $60.3 million in Saudi money over the past decade, and is still doing communications work for Riyadh. Hogan Lovells U.S., L.L.P., which was called Hogan & Harston until May of this year, did work for the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in 2009. The Saudis paid the Loeffler Group, LLP, $10.5 million over the past 10 years, and gave Sandler Innocenzi, Inc. $8.9 million. Patton Boggs, LLP, another lobbying firm, also continues to do work for Saudi Arabia, and has earned a little over $3 million over the past decade.”
Riyadh’s push on Capitol Hill went into overdrive in 2015 after U.S. President Barack Obama decided to break bread with Iran by signing the now scrapped Nuclear Deal. The move that did not please Saudi Royals in the least as they view Iran as their arch enemy, mainly on the basis that they do not share Riyadh’s religious worldview.
To describe Saudi Arabia’s buying spree Ben Freeman writes:
“In 2016, according to FARA records, they reported spending just under $10 million on lobbying firms; in 2017, that number had nearly tripled to $27.3 million. And that’s just a baseline figure for a far larger operation to buy influence in Washington, since it doesn’t include considerable sums given to elite universities or think tanks like the Arab Gulf States Institute, the Middle East Institute, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (to mention just a few of them).”
Risking Life and Freedom to Speak Out Against Saudi Arabia
Speaking against Saudi Arabia has become an almost impossible feat. Speaking against Saudi Arabia also entails some degree of danger as the Kingdom often resorts to violence to silence those voices it cannot coerce. If you recall, only weeks before Riyadh was lauded for finally allowing women to drive – what a breakthrough! – Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the arrest of several women’s rights activists including internationally recognized women’s rights activist Samar Badawi.
“The arrests of Samar Badawi and Nassima al-Sadah signal that the Saudi authorities see any peaceful dissent, whether past or present, as a threat to their autocratic rule,” warned Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch in August 2018.
She added: “After the recent arbitrary arrests of businesspeople, women’s rights activists, and reformist clerics, Saudi Arabia’s allies and partners should question what ‘reform’ really means in a country where the rule of law is disdainfully ignored.”
Indeed … many things in Saudi Arabia are perceived as direct attacks to Al Saud’s absolute rule, and all offenses are punishable by death.
Saudi Arabia’s Attempt to Eradicate History
But there is an aspect of Saudi Arabia’s intolerance that remains seldom talked about – that of religious and cultural persecution.
Under the direction of Al Saud’s clergy, so that the Wahhabism doctrine would never be challenged throughout the Islamic World, the Kingdom architected the destruction of all religious and cultural sites – thus denying a people and a faith their History.
If we do nothing Islam will be what Saudi Arabia dictates it is in just a few decades – the thought warrants a deep pause if we consider that all self-professed Islamic radicals claim Wahhabism/Salafism as their matrix.
Wahhabism/Salafism although posited as a legitimate interpretation of the Scriptures is in fact not a recognized school of thought, it sits as an aberration over 1.6 billion people by the virtue of the money it wields, the governments it owns, and the guns it points at its detractors.
In 2014 Carla Power published for the Times an exposé on Saudi Arabia’s “wider government campaign to rub out historical and religious sites across the Kingdom.”
She writes: “Over 98% of the Kingdom’s historical and religious sites have been destroyed since 1985, estimates the Islamic Heritage Research Foundation in London… In recent years, the twin forks of Wahhabi doctrine and urban development have speared most physical reminders of Islamic history in the heart of Mecca. The house of the Prophet’s first wife, Khadijah has made way for public toilets.”
Al Baqee Organization Defends Religious Heritage
Silence was broken this October on the floor of the United Nations Human Rights in Geneva and the United Nations headquarter in New York, as myself and other members of the Al Baqee Organization, a grassroots not-for-profit dedicated to the defense of religious freedom and the protection of the world religious heritage, broke the status quo by demanding that Saudi Arabia be held accountable for its many and grave cultural and religious violations.
As per the UNESCO’s mandate: “Safeguarding and promoting cultural heritage in all its forms – tangible and intangible, cultural and natural, movable and immovable – are key to achieving dialogue, sustainable development and social cohesion.” Saudi Arabia has systematically and, as a matter of state policy, hacked away at such heritage so that it could imprint its worldview.
For the first time since Al Saud rose kings over Arabia, Muslims are speaking up against the abuses the silent and silenced majority has had to endure over the decades and centuries, so that they could be freed of the yoke of intolerance and fanaticism.

The Mac-Haydn Theatre, celebrated for its spectacular musical revivals, opened its 50th season with the Tony-award winning Damn Yankees. The performance delivered on its promise of outstanding singer/dancers directed (by John Saunders) and choreographed (by Brian Knowlton) to a fare-thee-well.
Damn Yankees first opened in 1955, written by George Abbott and Douglas Wallop, based on Wallop’s novel:  The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant.  Abbott directed, Bob Fosse choreographed, and Richard Adler and Jerry Ross wrote the music (as they had for Pajama Game).   The producers sought a female dancer for the leading lady and eventually settled on Gwen Verdon, a dancer who had only sung one song in her previous show:  Can-Can.  Bob Fosse took a chance with her, Verdon won a Tony for her performance and they married in 1960.  A 1994 Broadway revival with Bebe Neuwirth was also awarded a best musical Tony.
The show is set in the mid-1950s, during a stretch when the New York Yankees won the American League pennant virtually every year.  In a retelling of the Faust legend, the middle-aged Joe Boyd (Steven Hassmer), disgusted with his beloved Washington Senators’ terrible record, screams:  “I’d sell my soul for one long ball hitter.”  Presto!  The devil—Mr. Applegate (Mark Hardy) arrives amidst a red cloud of smoke, and proposes that he convert the Senators into champions by changing Boyd into young phenom Joe Hardy (Michael Brennan).  Boyd cannot resist this temptation, but he insists on an escape clause that will allow him to return to his normal life and loving wife (Julie Galorenzo) if chooses to do so by the end of the baseball season.  Fearing that Joe will slip through his fingers, Applegate employs his lovely seductress, Lola (Corrinne Turk) to seal the deal.  And will he abandon his wife for the siren Lola?
The production values are top notch, as we have come to expect from the Mac-Haydn Theatre.  The number and style of  period costumes (by Jimm Halliday) are amazing, especially considering that this is only the first show of the season.  The three-piece suits in white or black with touches of red designed by Halliday for Applegate are stunning as are Lola’s outfits.  The lighting (by Andrew Gmoser) creates magical moments from moonlight and stars, to blinking blubs ringing the ceiling, to the darkness of the denizens of hell.  Musical director David Maglione provides his own kind of magic, with the few instruments sounding like a full orchestra.  Music accompanies actors dressed as movers while they effortlessly relocate set pieces onto and off of the stage, as designed by Kevin Gleason, including an upstage platform representing the Boyds’ home. Saunders and Knowlton keep the action moving from beginning to end, with some thirty performers charging headlong, in and out and through the aisles.
Because the stage is so tiny, the aisles must stay clear, which means the performance cannot begin until everyone is seated in this theatre-in-the round.  Many audience members, some with walkers, canes, and wheelchairs, are transported by bus from senior residences so it takes a good deal of time to seat everyone both at the beginning and after intermission.  This can be a challenge in a show as long as Damn Yankees, running two and a half hours with an additional 25 minute intermission.
While some of the songs have become standards, such as: “You Gotta Have Heart,” and “Whatever Lola Wants,” others, perhaps less well-known, can be rollicking, like the hoedown in “Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, MO,” wonderfully comic (“The Game”) when the players force themselves to think about the game instead of their girlfriends, or moving, as in the ballads “Goodbye, Old Girl,” sung by Hassmer, and “Near to You,” a duet with Brennan and Galorenzo.   All of the singers have strong voices in this production but these three are standouts.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Having seen the original Broadway production of Damn Yankees as a child, I was anxious to return to it after all these years.  But the script doesn’t hold up as well as I remembered:  in this age of #metoo, it is difficult to watch the sexy Lola be foisted on the young Joe.  It is unclear why Applegate tries to undermine his protégé by creating a scandal that seemingly prevents the devil from adhering to his part of the bargain.  And that first act could definitely benefit from some cutting of songs and reprises that don’t further the plot.
But outstanding performances make up for deficiencies in the script:  Mark Hardy is a smart and smarmy devil, setting just the right tone for Applegate;  Galorenzo and Hassmer are a convincing middle-aged couple—the counterpoint in their song “Six Months Out of Every Year” is a joy to see and hear, as Hassmer rages about his team’s loss;  Brennan makes it easy for us to accept him as Joe’s younger self with his combination of enthusiasm and wistfulness;  Corrinne Turk is a fine singer/dancer as Lola;  Doris (Emma Flynn) and her sister (Maggie Eley)  playing neighborhood women as comic caricatures,  are welcome additions to the plot; Gabe Belyeu as Van Buren, the team’s manager and Monk Schane Lydon, as the owner, with his gravelly voice and cigar are a perfect duo; and Megan Hasse as Gloria Thorpe, the reporter, shines.
