Working hard

The last couple weeks have been a grind. Friends and I have gotten in the routine of waking up at 4am most mornings, studying, going to school, studying, coming home, studying. Feels like the first time I'm really putting substantial effort into school if I'm honest. Obviously this doesn't leave a lot of time for anything else.

The Year in Arrow Fic, 2022

This is my fourth year providing some statistics on Arrow fanfiction on AO3 (see 2019, 2020, and 2021).  

My data are based on monthly scrapes of recent unlocked fics tagged Arrow. The totals differ from a hand count of fics on AO3 because, on the one hand, my scraping tool does not capture locked fics (yet), but on the other hand, I have fics that were posted or updated in 2022 but have since been deleted. 

Note that this year I used a third party scraper through January 30th, after which it was taken offline, and then began scraping using my own Python code as of August 26th.  So, I will have missed some fics that were posted and then removed from February-August.

The 1,074 fics published in 2022 represent a 38% decrease from 2021, continuing a downward trend since the show ended.

I hand code several variables for each fic, including a 9-category relationship variable, a freeform relationship variable where I can go into more detail, and a 4-category fic type field.

By Ship:   Looking at relationship type, Olicity is the most ficced relationship of the four specific relationships I track, at 17% of all fics for the year (down from 19% in 2021). Lauriver makes of 5% of 2022 fics, down from 7% last year.  Olivarry makes up 4% of 2022 fics, down from 5% last year.  Dinahsiren is down from 3% to 0.65%.

I categorized 45% of 2022 fics into the “Other Arrow Ships” category (which includes gen), up from 42% in 2021.  Fics tagged Arrow that aren’t primarily about Arrow held steady at 20%, although my new category “Completely Non-Arrow” increased from 5% to 6%, and “Non-Arrow” (focuses on other shows/characters but either Arrow is referenced in the summary or Arrow characters are listed in the tags) decreased from 15% to 14%.  Finally, fics in a language other than English increased from 4% to 8%.

The “Other Arrow Ships” category is quite diverse--the 478 fics have 255 different entries in the freeform field.  The most ficced relationship within that category is Avalance, making up about 5% of the category.  As in previous years, the majority of the most ficced relationships involve Sara and/or Oliver.  This is also the place for gen fic, and here Oliver-centric makes the top 10 “relationships” within Other Arrow Ships.

By Format:  For fics tagged Arrow in 2022, 53% were multichapters (566), 41% were one-shots (441), 5% were one-shot collections (52), and 1% were single-universe collections (15).   [That last type are fics like Pieces of Always, where the story doesn’t necessarily flow from one chapter to the next, but all chapters are in the same universe.]  Compared to 2021, there were slightly more multichapters and slightly fewer one shots (51% and 43% in 2021).

Looking at format by ship category, non-Arrow fics were least likely to be one-shots, and Dinahsiren, foreign language fics, and “non-fic” fics were most likely to be one-shots in 2022.

As always, grad school training demands I must offer some caveats.

I hand code category and format myself; in an academic research project, each fic would be coded by multiple coders working independently who would discuss and resolve discrepancies.  I code based on the summary and tags alone, so fics with minimal information may be categorized inaccurately.  Also, these statistics are for unlocked fics on AO3 only.  It’s possible that locked fics and fics published on other platforms would show different patterns.  (I’ve seen instructions online for how to scrape while logged in, so sometime when I have time I’ll work on that.)  It’s also possible that I have missed fics, particularly with the gap in the beginning part of the year while I was figuring out a new scraping method.

Secrets of a seventeen year old scraper

Even if you don't follow Avi Schiffmann, you're probably familiar with the 17-year-old's work: he's the creator of http://nCoV2019.live and http://2020Protests.com, the two leading tracking tools for covid cases and protests you can join.

In an interview with Tanya Basu for MIT Tech Review, Schiffmann describes how he taught himself to build these dashboards when he made a site that scraped his school's athletic stats portal and made it legible and useful.

When he decided to use those skills to build his covid tracker, he put a call out on some coding sites and attracted a dozen high-school aged volunteers, many in Asia, who helped write the scrapers that pull in the data for http://nCoV2019.live.

As the project grew more sophisticated and then begat his protest tracker, he used online tutorials and communities to acquire the knowledge he needed to overcome new challenges ("The thing is, you can learn anything online").

Since the first days of the maker movement, it's been clear that the ability to search and discuss is the major thing that differentiates "makers" from earlier generations of tinkerers, like the radio and electronics hobbyists that kept Modern Mechanix in business.

Schiffmann is a self-confessed "bad student" with a 1.7GPA and 60% attendance, which he attributes to his consuming passion for his programming projects. It's a testament to how much of pedagogy turns on getting out of the student's way when their passions are inflamed.

I read my first novel - Alice in Wonderland - one day in second grade. I pulled it off the shelf before class started and sat on the carpet to read it, and my teacher, Bev Panikkar, saw that I was engrossed in it and didn't call me to class.

She let me sit there for two consecutive school days while I read, and while I was kicking off a lifelong passion for literature (also, I married a woman called Alice!).

As interesting as the pedagogical and makerish implications of Schiffmann's story, I'm also fascinated by the role that scraping plays in making these essential information resources.

Scraping went from a honorable practice (the core of Google Search, for example) to a potential felony over the course of decades, as companies that made their fortunes scraping others turned around and sued, banned and blocked anyone who returned the favor.

But scraping is one of the key tools for attaining Adversarial Interoperability, which once kept tech dynamic and responsive to users, and the absence of which has contributed greatly to its stagnation and corruption.

As online advertising is proliferating at an ever increasing pace, clickthrough rates for online advertisements have decreased from 3% to far less than 1% [15] [as of 2012, probably worse in 2023]

Note: This is a decade old study. I couldn't find newer. The findings aren't exactly positive though, and they suggest that more sophisticated algorithms would be worse rather than better.

Purveyors of targeted advertising often promise improved performance, not only in being able to deliver the advertisement to desired user segments, but also increased performance metrics like click-through rates (CTR) and sales conversions. Nevertheless, there are few studies to date that measure the effectiveness of targeted advertising [people from business school use more numbers and less statistically meaningful evidence than anyone else I've ever met]

If all an advertiser cares about is clicks, and not about the clickiness [the propensity to click on any ad] of the targeted group, then targeted advertising is more cost effective at generating clicks as long as it is no more than 4.5 times as expensive as displaying the ad to everyone. Given an industry average of a 3 times price premium for targeting [5], we might conclude targeting is more cost effective, but of course this depends greatly on the targeting product

Note: This neglects the cost of constructing targeted ads and of acquiring the targeting information. Unless the cost of acquiring people's information, purchasing it from data scrapers, processing that data, developing targeted advertisement to match that data, and communicating with targeted advertisers is <= 1.5x the cost of totally untargeted ads, this is a net negative loss for advertisers.

This study opens up several questions about the effectiveness of targeted advertising. Advertisers are seeking more and more to target their ads to the segments most likely to convert as a result of the advertising; however, this strategy may not be cost effective as this segment is likely to convert in the absence of any advertising. Our results indicate that more sophisticated targeting algorithms might not gain, and might even harm, the advertiser as those seeing the ad would convert in the absence of advertising.

The whole thing, in all its privacy destroying rot, is fully unsupported by any evidence of net profit.

Also even if there were net profit, the opportunity cost of not doing something else more valuable is certainly immense. Reinvesting the money for targeted advertisement in product improvements, stock investments, worker retention, worker investment, etc, would almost certainly give better returns.

About DataFan

Hi everyone! My name’s Lockea and you’ve found my blog. Congrats! I’m a data scientist and acafan (academic fan, a member of the fandom who also studies fandom). My main acafan project right now is comprehensive data analytical analysis of what people read and write on AO3. 

So what is DataFan? DataFan is a project where I answer questions about fanfiction using data analytic techniques. I answer everything from the easy (want to know what story rating gets the most hits?) to the not so easy (Is there a relationship between the average length of a chapter and how many comments the chapter gets?). What about Fandom Stats? Fandom Stats is a great project and I looked at their source code when I was first starting out with DataFan (both projects are written in the same programming language!) but Fandom Stats can only answer simple questions about fandom and can’t perform any analytical analysis. This isn’t a bash on Fandom Stats! It’s a great tool but DataFan was written with the goal of eventually performing complex artificial intelligence and predictive analytics on fandom trends. 

Can I ask DataFan a question? Yes! Absolutely! Simply send me an ask or submit a post for questions that exceed ask lengths.

Is DataFan Open Source? Yep! It’s written in python using all open source tools. Send me an ask or DM and I’ll send you a link to the github repo.

Can I use DataFan for myself? You can use the code I use to pull the data from AO3 for your own use. You can use the Jupyter Notebooks written for DataFan analysis to construct your own queries. You CANNOT use my research directly without citations. If you want to use my research, please contact me so we can get the right citations and licenses figured out (don’t worry, it doesn’t cost money). All that said, unless you’re planning to study or practice data science yourself, you’re better off just asking me a question and I’ll do the querying.

Wait, can you clarify that? If you ask DataFan a question, then I perform the analysis and write up a short article discussing the results of the analysis. This resulting article and data can be cited. For example, if you’re writing a paper for school on fandom and want to know something DataFan can answer. 

The only time you may want to perform your own analysis and NOT ask me a question is if you are studying data science or practice data science yourself. In that case, you may use the AO3 scraper and write your own queries. Please do not directly copy and paste any work I’ve done (including copying my Jupyter Notebooks) and call it your own, however, as that’s just plain not cool. The exception is if you wish to rewrite a Notebook as a learning experience.

Mint: late-stage adversarial interoperability demonstrates what we had (and what we lost)

In 2006, Aaron Patzer founded Mint. Patzer had grown up in the city of Evansville, Indiana—a place he described as "small, without much economic opportunity"—but had created a successful business building websites. He kept up the business through college and grad school and invested his profits in stocks and other assets, leading to a minor obsession with personal finance that saw him devoting hours every Saturday morning to manually tracking every penny he'd spent that week, transcribing his receipts into Microsoft Money and Quicken.

Patzer was frustrated with the amount of manual work it took to track his finances with these tools, which at the time weren't smart enough to automatically categorize "Chevron" under fuel or "Safeway" under groceries. So he conceived on an ingenious hack: he wrote a program that would automatically look up every business name he entered into the online version of the Yellow Pages—constraining the search using the area code in the business's phone number so it would only consider local merchants—and use the Yellow Pages' own categories to populate the "category" field in his financial tracking tools.

It occurred to Patzer that he could do even better, which is where Mint came in. Patzer's idea was to create a service that would take all your logins and passwords for all your bank, credit union, credit card, and brokerage accounts, and use these logins and passwords to automatically scrape your financial records, and categorize them to help you manage your personal finances. Mint would also analyze your spending in order to recommend credit cards whose benefits were best tailored to your usage, saving you money and earning the company commissions.

By international standards, the USA has a lot of banks: around 12,000 when Mint was getting started (in the US, each state gets to charter its own banks, leading to an incredible, diverse proliferation of financial institutions). That meant that for Mint to work, it would have to configure its scrapers to work with thousands of different websites, each of which was subject to change without notice.

If the banks had been willing to offer an API, Mint's job would have been simpler. But despite a standard format for financial data interchange called OFX (Open Financial Exchange), few financial institutions were offering any way for their customers to extract their own financial data. The banks believed that locking in their users' data could work to their benefit, as the value of having all your financial info in one place meant that once a bank locked in a customer for savings and checking, it could sell them credit cards and brokerage services. This was exactly the theory that powered Mint, with the difference that Mint wanted to bring your data together from any financial institution, so you could shop around for the best deals on cards, banking, and brokerage, and still merge and manage all your data.

At first, Mint contracted with Yodlee, a company that specialized in scraping websites of all kinds, combining multiple webmail accounts with data scraped from news sites and other services in a single unified inbox. When Mint outgrew Yodlee's services, it founded a rival called Untangly, locking a separate team in a separate facility that never communicated with Mint directly, in order to head off any claims that Untangly had misappropriated Yodlee's proprietary information and techniques—just as Phoenix computing had created a separate team to re-implement the IBM PC ROMs, creating an industry of "PC clones."

Untangly created a browser plugin that Mint's most dedicated users would use when they logged into their banks. The plugin would prompt them to identify elements of each page in the bank's websites so that the scraper for that site could figure out how to parse the bank's site and extract other users' data on their behalf.

To head off the banks' countermeasures, Untangly maintained a bank of cable-modems and servers running "headless" versions of Internet Explorer (a headless browser is one that runs only in computer memory, without drawing the actual browser window onscreen) and they throttled the rate at which the scripted interactions on these browsers ran, in order to make it harder for the banks to determine which of its users were Mint scrapers acting on behalf of its customers and which ones were the flesh-and-blood customers running their own browsers on their own behalf.

As the above implies, not every bank was happy that Mint was allowing its customers to liberate their data, not least because the banks' winner-take-all plan was for their walled gardens to serve as reasons for customers to use their banks for everything, in order to get the convenience of having all their financial data in one place.

Some banks sent Mint legal threats, demanding that they cease-and-desist from scraping customer data. When this happened, Mint would roll out its "nuclear option"—an error message displayed to every bank customer affected by these demands informing them that their bank was the reason they could no longer access their own financial data. These error messages would also include contact details for the relevant decision-makers and customer-service reps at the banks. Even the most belligerent bank's resolve weakened in the face of calls from furious customers who wanted to use Mint to manage their own data.

In 2009, Mint became a division of Intuit, which already had a competing product with a much larger team. With the merged teams, they were able to tackle the difficult task of writing custom scrapers for the thousands of small banks they'd been forced to sideline for want of resources.

Adversarial interoperability is the technical term for a tool or service that works with ("interoperates" with) an existing tool or service—without permission from the existing tool's maker (that's the "adversarial" part).

Mint's story is a powerful example of adversarial interoperability: rather than waiting for the banks to adopt standards for data-interchange—a potentially long wait, given the banks' commitment to forcing their customers into treating them as one-stop-shops for credit cards, savings, checking, and brokerage accounts—Mint simply created the tools to take its users' data out of the bank's vaults and put it vaults of the users' choosing.

Adversarial interoperability was once commonplace. It's a powerful way for new upstarts to unseat the dominant companies in a market—rather than trying to convince customers to give up an existing service they rely on, an adversarial interoperator can make a tool that lets users continue to lean on the existing services, even as they chart a path to independence from those services.

But stories like Mint are rare today, thanks to a sustained, successful campaign by the companies that owe their own existence to adversarial interoperability to shut it down, lest someone do unto them as they had done unto the others.

Thanks to decades of lobbying and lawsuits, we've seen a steady expansion of copyright rules, software patents (though these are thankfully in retreat today), enforceable terms-of-service and theories about "interference with contract" and "tortious interference."

These have grown to such an imposing degree that big companies don't necessarily need to send out legal threats or launch lawsuits anymore—the graveyard of new companies killed by these threats and suits is scary enough that neither investors nor founders have much appetite for risking it.

For Mint to have launched when it did, and done as well as it did, tells us that adversarial interoperability may be down, but it's not out. With the right legal assurances, there are plenty of entrepreneurs and investors who'd happily provide users with the high-tech ladders they need to scale the walled gardens that Big Tech has imprisoned them within.

The Mint story also addresses an important open question about adversarial interoperability: if we give technologists the right to make these tools, will they work? After all, today's tech giants have entire office-parks full of talented programmers. Can a new market entrant hope to best them in the battle of wits that plays out when they try to plug some new systems into Big Tech's existing ones?

The Mint experience points out that attackers always have an advantage over defenders. For the banks to keep Mint out, they'd have to have perfect scraper-detection systems. For Mint to scrape the banks' sites, they only need to find one flaw in the banks' countermeasures.

Mint also shows how an incumbent company's own size works against it when it comes to shutting out competitors. Recall that when a bank decided to send its lawyers after Mint, Mint was able to retaliate by recruiting the bank's own customers to blast it for that decision. The more users Mint had, the more complaints it would generate—and the bigger a bank was, the more customers it had to become Mint users, and defenders of Mint's right to scrape the bank's site.

It's a neat lesson about the difference between keeping out malicious hackers versus keeping out competitors. If a "bad guy" was attacking the bank's site, it could pull out all the stops to shut the activity down: lawsuits, new procedures for users to follow, even name-and-shame campaigns against the bad actor.

But when a business attacks a rival that is doing its own customers' bidding, its ability to do so has to be weighed against the ill will it will engender with those customers, and the negative publicity this kind of activity will generate. Consider that Big Tech platforms claim billions of users—that's a huge pool of potential customers for adversarial interoperators who promise to protect those users from Big Tech's poor choices and exploitative conduct!

This is also an example of how "adversarial interoperability" can peacefully co-exist with privacy protection: it's not hard to see how a court could distinguish between a company that gets your data from a company's walled garden at your request so that you can use it, and a company that gets your data without your consent and uses it to attack you.

Mint's pro-competitive pressure made banks better, and gave users more control. But of course, today Mint is a division of Intuit, a company mired in scandal over its anticompetitive conduct and regulatory capture, which have allowed it to subvert the Free File program that should give millions of Americans access to free tax-preparation services.

Imagine if an adversarial interoperator were to enter the market today with a tool that auto-piloted its users through the big tax-prep companies' sites to get them to Free File tools that would actually work for them (as opposed to tricking them into expensive upgrades, often by letting them get all the way to the end of the process before revealing that something about the user's tax situation makes them ineligible for that specific Free File product).

Such a tool would be instantly smothered with legal threats, from "tortious interference" to hacking charges under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. And yet, these companies owe their size and their profits to exactly this kind of conduct.

Creating legal protections for adversarial interoperators won't solve all our problems of market concentration, regulatory capture, and privacy violations—but giving users the right to control how they interact with the big services would certainly open a space where technologists, co-ops, entrepreneurs and investors could help erode the big companies' dominance, while giving the public a better experience and a better deal.

GFS: Time On The Glacier

When we started this project, the first thing we thought about was the theme. What we need to make is a calendar, and the calendar often reflects the passage of time. How to use this?

When we accidentally watched the exhibition, we saw the work of Scandinavian artist Olafur elisasson in the Tate Modern. Putting many huge ice cubes in the city of London and watching them gradually melt, it reminds us of the melting iceberg. So I searched a lot of information on the NASA official website. From these data, it can be seen that the melting of icebergs is a manifestation of environmental degradation, and the degree of integration is increasing year by year. Combined with the environmental protection theme of this project, we identified iceberg melting as our theme. There are many pictures about oil painting and hand-painting in the mood board we were looking for, so our first attempt started with oil paint. We tried to create with different materials, such as scrapers, brushes and fingers. Finally, after the group discussion, we determined the finger version. After completing the basic patterns, we began to tried to merge our hand drawing with the calendar. We took a screenshot after moving it a little bit, as the first page of each month in the calendar. When the user turns over the calendar, the first page of each month gradually turns blue, representing the melting of the iceberg. During the group discussion, we decided to design the package to be torn apart. The part that can be torn off on the outer packaging is the pattern of the iceberg, and the upper part of the cover of the calendar is the ocean. When the user tears the outer packaging, the inside cover is exposed. When designing the inside pages, we also thought of using the outline of the iceberg as the basic pattern. So we tried to draw the outlines of twelve icebergs, which looked very good. We have encountered many disagreements in this project, and sometimes did not know how to continue. For example, after we finished hand-painting in the beginning, because the painting was too large, the details of the oil painting materials could not be photographed. So we thought of going to school to scan. Finally, we went to the library of the LCC and successfully scanned out our hand-painted electronic version. And because of the different preferences of our team members, we spent almost a whole day in choosing fonts. In short, through group discussions and tutorials, we finally made a satisfactory finished product. This project is really not easy to do, although the process is not so smooth, we have learned a lot from it. I think cooperation is very beneficial to everyone. Each of us is good at different areas, so we can do our jobs and learn from each other to complete the work most effectively.
