Christian Right-wingers, (as they ALWAYS want to do) trying to ban books in school libraries in Florida for supposed obscene passages.
Which is weird because the bible that they love is full of violence and sex.

Research consistently demonstrates that libraries are indispensable because of their role in fostering the country’s literacy. One study by the Pennsylvania Library Association suggests that kids who participate in library preschool programs demonstrate more pre-reading skills and emergent literacy behaviors than their peers.
Likewise, library reading programs in the summer — a time when students’ skills typically decline — successfully encourage children to spend more time with books, thereby facilitating reading achievement.

The Science of Being Angry by Nicole Melleby: This was a fantastic read! It deals with a topic you don't often see in middle grade lit (even with the welcome increase of books dealing with mental health) - anger. More specifically, anger without a basis in trauma or specific relational troubles. Anger that just /is/, like floating anxiety, and just as hard (if not harder) to deal with. That's what Joey, the main character, lives with - and she's determined to find out why. Joey loves her family, her two moms, big brother, and two twin brothers, but she also keeps lashing out at them, as well as her peers. She gets overwhelmed by situations (though Joey isn't diagnosed by the end of the novel, it's clear sensory overload is a part of this) and strikes out without thinking. But later, she thinks - too much, beating up on herself and convincing herself she's the cause of her family's tensions. The only way to fix it, she decides, is to find the donor who was part of her birth to see if he has a similar problem, and she launches into a secret investigation. Melleby handles Joey's issues so sensitively - you feel for her so much, and hate to see her treating herself harshly, and yet also can see that her actions also hurt those around her - sometimes physically and often emotionally, when she verbally lashes out. Her desperation and confusion are palpable, as is her family's deep love for her - you just wish she could see it sooner. This novel is beautifully done, and inclusive, with representation of happily married lesbians, a blended family, and a same-gender crush. The #ownvoices author also wrote a wonderful novel, Hurricane Season, which I very much want to read now! This book is so well written, and many readers - especially girls, whose anger isn't often portrayed or explored in middle grade lit - will feel seen. #middlegradebooks #middlegradereads #middlegradereaders #childrensbookstagram #kidsbookstagram #kidsbooks #weneeddiversebooks #lgbtq #lgbtqkidsbooks #lovemakesafamily #librariansofinstagram #librariansofinstagram #schoollibrarian #schoollibrary #teachersofInstagram #anger https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg2f-q2va4S/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Last week, we highlighted the need to increase diverse books in our school/class libraries or curricula and examined the demographics of the population that you serve. 📊⠀ ⠀ So what’s next?⠀ ⠀ A book audit.⠀ ⠀ 😯 I know that sounds intimidating…but basically, a book audit is when you take an inventory of your books in light of specific characteristics, such as the ethnicity of the protagonist.⠀ ⠀ You could use this helpful tally sheet from @sfpsmom (bit.ly/DiverseLibraryInventory) or create your own in Google Sheets or Excel. Including the titles of the books is optional. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, just do the tally marks. The point is to identify whose voices are being represented through the books.⠀ ⠀ After you’ve gone through your school/class library and/or curricula, total up each column.⠀ ⠀ Now, sit with your data.⠀ ⠀ 👉🏽 What patterns emerged? ⠀ ⠀ 🗣 Whose voices are the loudest? Quietest?⠀ ⠀ 🤔 How does this data compare with the demographics noted last week?⠀ ⠀ ⭕️ What gaps need to be filled?⠀ ⠀ These are hard questions. Feelings may arise that may not feel too good. Remember that diversifying your library/curricula is important work. We know better. Now we have to do better.⠀ ⠀ Next week, we will explore some notable nuances to consider when examining diverse books. Hope to see you then! ❤️💛💙💚🧡⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #teachingliteracy #elementaryteacher #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #iteachtoo #weneeddiversebooks #poc #diversitymatters #culturallyrelevantteaching #schoollibraryjournal #schooldemographics #classroomlibrary #schoollibrary #middleschoolteacher #highschoolteacher #teachers #teaching #books #reading #diversevoices #bookaudit #booksurvey #diversereads #multiculturalliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/B2c_MUTgsn3/?igshid=1l65cql3xiyv2

Exploring EdTech
Believe it or not, these days librarianship is not all about books and card catalogs (though many people still think that’s the case!). The 21st century librarian wears many hats, and an increasingly load bearing role is that of technology expert.
School library media centers these days should of course have a robust collection of hardcover books that students can hold in their hands, flip through, sniff, and take home or beat up in their overfilled backpacks for a few weeks. Library spaces should also have up to date technology with clear guidance on appropriate use and the opportunity to learn and explore digitally. If a librarian is not well-versed in this area, she will have a hard time surviving!
In addition to being a book and technology hub, many school libraries are centers of creativity, especially through the inclusion of MakerSpaces. I admit I had never heard of a MakerSpace before beginning my program in Library Science. Over the past year I have read and heard a lot more about it, but am definitely a beginner! I have read many articles and blog entries about MakerSpaces, and the one I have found especially useful is Renovated Learning by Diana Rendina, a librarian based in Florida.
If you’re also new to MakerSpaces I recommend looking at her START HERE page.
Here is an infographic I made about this blog using Canva:
