Bumpin’ Bibliophile Dad Vibes | In the dim light of the school library, a dad is owning his pregnancy journey, proudly displaying his eight-month baby bump while playing the role of a supportive parent. Navigating the aisles of books, he balances the weight of impending fatherhood with his passion for knowledge. His impressive flexibility is showcased as he leans over to assist his kids with a school project, bringing a fun twist to the whole experience. Each glance exchanged with his partner, the dedicated librarian, is electric, reflecting a unique love that's as deep and rich as the stories that surround them. This dynamic duo navigates the challenges of parenting with laughter and creativity, proving that family comes in all shapes and sizes. Still, they're not just about the serious stuff; playful banter fills the space as they explore the wonders of literature together. Their journey is a brave ode to unconventional family dynamics, where love and learning intertwine in unexpected ways. More images are also available at https://mpregstuff.com.

Hey Jumblr, I require your assistance
In an effort to be more inclusive and to combat the oversaturation of Christmas at the elementary school I work at, I try to include Hannukkah stories during storytime (I'm a school librarian).
However, as we don't have too many Jewish students, I usually have to quickly explain the holiday and its related vocab when I read one of these books.
I was wondering if you could read my explanations for some of the terms and check for accuracy & potentially suggest a better way of explaining these terms to Grade 1s who know nothing about the holiday (it needs to be quick explanations so we don't lose track of the story).
=-=-=
Dreidel - It's a kind of game using a square top with letters written on each side. Each letter means a different thing. The points are usually counted using chocolate coins, so winning is extra sweet because you get the most chocolate!
Latke - It's a kind of potato pancake. Kind of like a hashbrown patty but even tastier, because it has more stuff in it.
Menorah - It's a name for a special kind of candleholder used during Hannukkah. It has a place for nine candles, and every night of Hannukkah you use the candle in the middle to light another candle.
Rabbi - You know how in Christianity the person who talks in front of everyone is called a priest or a pastor and in Islam they're called an imam? A rabbi is like that, but for the religion of Judaism.
Synagogue - It's the building where Jewish people go to worship. The buildings where people go to worship have different names depending on which religion the building belongs to; Christians have churches, Muslims have mosques, and Jewish people have synagogues.
Note: I have a good starter set of Hannukkah stories thanks to some suggestions from a Jewish coworker, but if you have any recs for Hannukkah stories (or stories during other Jewish holidays) for kids in Kindergarten to Grade 5 I'd be more than happy to add them to my "to buy" list. :)

Shout out to the kid who walked up to me in library today and told me with utmost seriousness, "Ken's job is just beach," before continuing on his way.
That kid wins library today.

Guess what!? The library is closed on me again! They closed the one place in the school where i'm safe from smells, and they're holding some sports celebration or grade 8 initiation there now! With kids eating, and the smells clearly wafting out into the hall towards me! It's unfair. They can find somewhere else for the sports celebration! Don't deprive me of my one joy here! It's cruel! I sit with my legs crossed, my body hunched over in a hallway, just suffering because they won't let me have my quiet, happy safe space! It's noisy in these halls, and I'm miserable!
After two days of suffering like this, I begin to have to ask: is it worth it? I've only managed to focus long enough to read 30 pages of the House of Hades (I read better in the library, and they haven't let me in there yet today)! So I guess I just suffer in the hallway again, and try to forget my pain by writing notes like these. It's better than sitting in a classroom with noisy kids eating, but it's still a miserable feeling.

#firstchapterfriday is an easy way to get your students or campers reading!
Check out the first chapter, read aloud to you by the author, of my spooky Southern Gothic middle grade series.
"Despite a lifetime of breaking the rules, twelve-year-old Issa Igwe never expected to land in witch prison. At least that’s what she calls The Siren School outside of its hallowed halls. It’s actually the country’s most prestigious boarding school for magically gifted girls, and Issa’s parents insist that she attend . . . even though the school’s creepy history is the stuff of legend."

Tip for school librarians
Have a welcome email template that you can adjust as needed welcoming new staff that you can use when/if there are staffing changes at your school.
In it, have info like what you can do for them as a librarian and what they can can do to help you to help them (e.g. "If you let me know when you'll be doing what unit I can let you know if I come across any cool resources on the topic or can see if there are any books that match the topic for storytime").
It might also be good to have a blurb about the library routine at your school so they know what to expect in advance.
It's a small thing that helps start to form a relationship with the staff right from the get-go. :-)

As an elementary librarian (volunteered position, not trained) I've been thinking A LOT about this.
I have pretty much all the leeway (I make lesson plans on my own and haven't been assigned a curriculum). If anyone has any ideas on how to teach these concepts to K-5 kids, I'm taking suggestions!
When you understand that kids and teenagers being salty about literary symbolic analysis comes from a very real place of annoyance and frustration at some teachers for being over-bearing and pretentious in their projecting of symbolism onto every facet of a story but you also understand that literary analysis and critical thinking in regards to symbolism is extremely important and deserves to be not only taught in schools, but actively used by writers when examining their own work to see if they might have used symbolism unintentionally and to make sure that they are using symbolism effectively:
