THE SPIDER UPDATE
Finding orb-weavers just seems like Easy Mode now, so of course my stupid brain requires a challenge. We're going fully webless babes!
It's been a tense, odd week of staring at a lot of stucco walls in the hot sun with very limited success lol CLICK THROUGH FOR PHOTOS
Here are some wall friends, not officially identified but I think maybe Selenops genus? (They camouflage well, and they also tend to flatten themselves to walls or right into little dents or holes, so I still haven't managed any truly clear photos, and no sign of the the eyes, which is usually how I’d ID for sure. Hence the staring at walls all week.)
EDIT: Figured these guys out eventually! Wall spiders (Oecobiidae), probably Oecobius genus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one I think is a running crab spider (Philodromus genus, different from the crab spider I found in the rose).
Tumblr media
She’s got her eggs! And when I found her the next day, she also had, uhhhhh….
Tumblr media
Well. I think that’s one of the little Selenops guys she’s got pinned under her jaws lol oh well! Circle of life!
I do not know who this lady is. False black / brown widow perhaps?
EDIT: Eventually got this ID from iNaturalist: GROUND SAC SPIDER (Trachelidae): Genus Trachelas
Tumblr media
And not to play favorites but saved the best for last:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Oh and because I truly didn't grasp the size of these things until I started looking for them in person, here is the little gray one next to my index finger)
Tumblr media
I need you to fully understand how impossible it is that I found any of these lol my passion is overcoming my nearsightedness and severe lack of depth perception

Selenops insularis, Wall crab spider (Unverified identification) Everglades National Park area in Miami-Dade county, Florida 21 January 2017, Nikon D7100
In South Florida, we apparently have two species of so-called “Wall crab spiders”: Selenops insularis and Selenops submaculosus. After trolling about online and on bugguide.net, I believe these two individuals (one above, one below) are the former, S. insularis.
I’m not sure about this specific species, S. insularis, but some spiders of genus Selenops are known as base jumping spiders — meaning they are spiders that can jump and somewhat control their descent, “flying” or “gliding” to targeted trees and foliage, for example, rather than the open ground. That is, of course, incredibly and wickedly awesome. As for these two lovelies, they were tuckered behind a large outdoor projection screen in Everglades National Park. Rest assured, they were very much situated in their night-spots — and not gliding around the park. Heh.
If and when I can either confirm or correct this identification, I’ll update this post accordingly.

Antioxidants, Vol. 8, Pages 120: Cell-Type Specific Analysis of Selenium-Related Genes in Brain
Selenoproteins are a unique class of proteins that play key roles in redox signaling in the brain. This unique organ is comprised of a wide variety of cell types that includes excitatory neurons, inhibitory neurons, astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes. Whereas selenoproteins are known to be required for neural development and function, the cell-type specific expression of selenoproteins and selenium-related machinery has yet to be systematically investigated. Due to advances in sequencing technology and investment from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-sponsored BRAIN initiative, #RNA sequencing (#RNAseq) data from thousands of cortical neurons can now be freely accessed and searched using the online #RNAseq data navigator at the Allen Brain Atlas. Hence, we utilized this newly developed tool to perform a comprehensive analysis of the cell-type specific expression of selenium-related genes in brain. Select proteins of interest were further verified by means of multi-label immunofluorescent labeling of mouse brain sections. Of potential significance to neural selenium homeostasis, we report co-expression of selenoprotein P (SELENOP) and selenium binding protein 1 (SELENBP1) within astrocytes. These findings raise the intriguing possibility that SELENBP1 may negatively regulate astrocytic SELENOP synthesis and thereby limit downstream Se supply to neurons. http://bit.ly/2LjTAN4

@plasma-sky submitted: Hi there! I was hoping you could help me identify this little cutie? I see some of them find their way indoors from time to time. But I've never been sure what kind of spider they were. Found in [removed]. (But could the location be removed please? :D)
Thank you! I love your blog by the way. So many cute bugs!

SPIDER NEWS 6/1/2023
Finally identified the weird wall spider with the impossible-to-photograph glassy legs:
Tumblr media
It’s in the Oecobius genus (originally guess was Selenops). This one is probably a female Oecobius maculatus.
Here are some orbies also just to prove I haven’t forgotten them (these should all be Neoscona I think)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bottom right might actually be the original Agave from April lol, the abdomen markings look the same and she would be about this size now.
Tumblr media
This one here was in a giant web that I walked through accidentally. IN MY DEFENSE it was only knee-high okay and I just didn’t see her. She’s fine though, as you can see she made it off of me and onto a cactus with no injuries and minimal stress (she did hold that defense posture there for quite a while, which I rarely see the orbies do lmao I’M VERY SORRY MA’AM)

Spiders that can “fly”
I went outside to do some yard work the other day and i noticed this small spider the size of a penny just posturing ontop of one of my lawn chairs. This made me curious as to what it was doing, and as i got closer i noticed the spider was shooting out its thread into the air. A couple seconds later it was violently thrown into the sky and sailed right onto the roof of my house. Now i’ve never witnessed this before so let me tell you about what i found out through the all mighty google.
Now the spider I saw was not special at all, in fact, the act of ballooning is common among spiders. Ballooning is something spiders do when they want to travel long distances, the accomplish this feat by shooting out multiple threads from their spider butt’s, which will either be caught by the wind, or lifted by atmospheric electricity.
Now, what's this about spider and electricity? Don’t freak out, but spiders are able to harness the electric fields in the air to propel themselves into the air, even when there isn't any wind to carry them! Here is a little youtube video that will give you more of an idea of what im talking about. -

This is just one of many ways that our little arachnid pals have figure out how to master the sky. There is a species of spider that has evolved to be able to glide, it is called the skydiving spider and belongs to the selenops genus. Here is another video on the spiders.

Selenops
Tumblr media
