Unbeknownst to Sam, others believe it as well.

“No, but we need to hurry. If he continues as he has been, he will only have one future left. We are running out of time.” She reaches out with her mind to share what her young companion can see.

“What of your declaration of being hands-off Jack? The plan itself stays within those guidelines. Well, mostly. Do you want to change your decision now?” She questions.

“I cannot let him die before he even has a chance at life, Amara. Plus, technically, it falls under fixing Chuck’s messes. He was the one who brought them into existence.” She smiles, picturing his serious face so much like his seraph father.

“I believe your dads would call that ‘splitting hairs’, would he not?” Fondness appears in her thoughts as she teases.

“The issue is, I’m not even sure he will last long enough to make it to the barn.” Knowing what is coming for someone she was once so connected to sobers her.

“Then I believe we will need to up our deadline, nephew. Are you sure this is what you want?”

“Yes. It’s the way it should have been had it not been for Lucifer. It is what my father had seen, and honestly, I miss them.” His sadness making its way through their connection.

“Then let’s finish this!”

Dean later accidentally finds Castiel as an amnesiac healer called Emmanuel.[10] After taking on Sam's madness and experience in Hell in order to save the Winchesters and redeem himself for what he did to Sam, Castiel had become insane and fell into a coma. However, he awakens and his sanity is returned to an extent when a signal was sent to all angels upon the discovery of the Word of God and the appointment of a new prophet. He then aids the Winchester brothers against Dick Roman, only to be transported to Purgatory with Dean. While Dean comes back, Castiel has not returned with him. While his condition is initially unknown, it's revealed that he spent most of his time running from Leviathans and that he didn't escape Purgatory with Dean as he had planned to stay as a form of penance. However, he was eventually released from the monster realm by an incursion of angels under the orders of a mysterious but powerful angel named Naomi, rejoining the Winchester brothers and trying to become a hunter himself. But after a long while, Castiel learned that Naomi had been controlling him ever since she got him out of Purgatory and compelled him to find the angel tablet, at any cost, even going as far as killing Dean. After he almost did so, Castiel then teamed up with Metatron when the angel convinced him to help him close the gates of Heaven. So after collecting the heart of a nephilim and the bow of cupid, Metatron is eventually captured by Naomi but escapes and kills her, only for Cass to discover Metatron's betrayal and plan to cause all angels in Heaven, even the imprisoned ones, to fall to Earth. After being stripped of his grace by Metatron in order to expel all angels from Heaven, Castiel spends the next three months on Earth as a human. After being captured and tortured by an angel named Malachi, Castiel steals the grace of Theo and returns to his original status as an angel (previously being promoted to a Seraph). Castiel later assists Dean with expelling the angel Gadreel from Sam and heals Sam's wounds. After Dean leaves with Crowley to find a way to defeat Abaddon, Castiel also leaves to begin a search for Metatron and Gadreel while being pursued by other angels, and eventually killing rebel leader Bartholomew, he assumes command of his faction. However, a deception of Metatron's makes him lose his army; instead he teams up with angels Gadreel and Hannah to infiltrate Heaven and destroy the angel tablet, cutting off Metatron's power to allow Dean to kill him. Though successful, Dean and Gadreel are killed, while Castiel locks Metatron up. He then left Heaven as he didn't want to be a leader and was dying due to his burning-out grace before Crowley saved him with Adina's grace. He has since reclaimed the last of his own grace and restored to full power and being a Seraph once again. After the release of the Darkness and the trauma he suffered under Rowena MacLeod's spell, Castiel agreed to act as the vessel for Lucifer to walk the Earth once more so Lucifer could battle the Darkness. Castiel would remain Lucifer's vessel for months, only emerging briefly to save Sam's life and convince the angels to help against the Darkness. At the end of the conflict with the Darkness, Lucifer was exorcized from Castiel by the ancient being, leaving Castiel in control of himself once more. During this time, he finally found God, who returned to defeat the Darkness as well. After Lucifer was exorcized from him, Castiel would dedicate himself to finding the fallen archangel and locking him away, blaming himself for Lucifer being free upon the Earth once more. This task caused Castiel to reluctantly work closely with Crowley, who also desired Lucifer gone. Following Lucifer's apparent defeat, Castiel dedicated himself to hunting down Lucifer's son Jack, a dangerous Nephilim. After a battle with Dagon that resulted in Castiel's brief empowerment by the Nephilim fetus, Castiel became convinced of the child's supposed goodness and chose to become his protector and guide, forsaking the Winchesters in the process. While trying to lock Lucifer in an alternate reality, Castiel was killed once more by the Fallen archangel. Following his death, Castiel was then sent to The Empty, where all angels and demons go when they die, to sleep for eternity. He was awoken from his eternal slumber when Lucifer's son Jack called his name. He was soon expelled from The Empty by the realm's guardian, The Shadow, for interfering with the latter's slumber, refusing to sleep again, and demanding his release, allowing him to be resurrected as a result. Castiel soon reunited with the Winchesters and Jack to help them out in their hunter cases. He later met with Lucifer who returned from the other world and warned him about the invading Alternate Michael. While in debate over recruiting Jack, Castiel and Lucifer were captured by Asmodeus, with Castiel being used as a bargaining chip for the Winchesters. Castiel escaped and was betrayed by Lucifer who nearly killed him but he retaliated before the latter fled and Castiel returned to Sam and Dean to warn them about the impending threat. Castiel was also reunited with his brother Gabriel who wanted no part in the conflict as Castiel set out to locate him to get him to help in restoring Heaven. Very soon, Gabriel joins the team and after they capture Lucifer. They later travel to the Apocalypse World, and find Jack and Mary. Castiel, who is suspicious of the demon, initially refuses to escort him back to hell, but is forced to do so by Dean, who still resents the angel and doesn't want him around. Castiel discovers Belphegor wanted his company so that he could read the Enochian incantation that can open the Crook's box, and that his plan all along was to use the object to absorb the spirits of hell into himself, become more powerful, and take over hell's throne. Castiel throws himself at Belphegor while he plays the instrument, smiting him so badly that Jack's corpse is burned to a crisp and the Crook is destroyed. Castiel manages to return to the surface of the Earth, and he tells Dean he couldn't let Belphegor fulfill the plan to suck in all of hell's souls, enraging Dean - against his friend. Since the Crook is gone, Rowena decides to cast a spell so that she can herself absorb the spirits inside her own body, dying in the process. The death of their witch ally further intensifies Dean's anger at Castiel, and in an argument at the bunker he throws in the angel's face that everything that goes wrong in the group's endeavors has been Castiel's fault. Tired of weathering the storm of his friend's moods, Castiel says that he is dead in Dean's eyes and so it is best that he moves on without the Winchesters. Later, he ignores Sam, who tries to contact him via phone messages. Castiel subsequently returned to the brothers to help them defeat God by grooming a resurrected Jack to become stronger. After the plan fails and they are chased by Billie, Castiel sacrifices him by confessing his love for his close friend and allows himself to be happy. This activates his deal with the Shadow who drags him and Billie into the Empty. He is later resurrected again by Jack after he becomes the new God, as Bobby Singer tells Dean that Castiel helped Jack to reshape Heaven for the better. Castiel's legacy has seemed to have become legendary among angels and demons alike, as many recognize him as the only angel who defied God's rules and cooperated with humans due to his own decision, which he is either loathed or respected for. He is also the only angel to have been killed, and been resurrected multiple times. He is the only known angel who has repeatedly been resurrected by God so he could help Sam and Dean Winchester.

In the beginning, there were no days of the week, so no one really knew what it meant to be the angel of Thursday. Castiel, said angel, thought that he could decide for himself, but at first there wasn’t much to decide from. 

He wasn’t the first angel and he wasn’t the last, and even though he was a seraph the ranks were vast and he faded into the background, simply being for centuries, millennia. 

Then life came to the world. 

No more were there just swirling clouds and rocks and gnashing fire—now there was something alive down there. Castiel was fascinated and he watched that life instead of merely being, and then one day he took a walk, and it was an auspicious day to do so, because that was the day a fish made landfall. 

He very nearly stepped on it. 

Castiel decided that being the angel of Thursday meant being the angel of life, and he loved all of the living things in the world (too much, some angels said). When humans came about and eventually came up with the idea of Thursdays (and called the day many things in many tongues), Castiel found that Thursdays seemed insignificant but were often a signal for good things to come, much like the small organisms that had first graced the planet. 

His love of living things would damn him eventually, in the eyes of the others, but to him, it gave him something like a purpose. Even so, he did not understand all of the creatures of the earth until he spent nearly a decade living among them, a fragment of his life triggering the fall. 

It’s been a nice fall, Castiel—no, Cas now, thinks. 

No more does he just watch the creatures of the earth; now he sits among them. At the present moment, he is sitting in front of a lake house that he owns with the human he fell for, and he’s holding a frog. 

(Cas wasn’t planning on holding the frog, it just kind of hopped into his hand. Maybe it could tell all that he had once been. Still was. He didn’t lose his love for the earth along with his wings.)

In the beginning there was nothing, and now there are many things, and as that human (Dean, because who else would it be?) comes up behind him and the frog hops away, Cas thinks that he is overall quite pleased with his choice for Thursdays.

The Seraph, Castiel

The one who loves the whole world.

The guard.

He who stands among the flowers and the bees.

The one who asks questions.

Above the cut is a direct translation of all the Hebrew – the top says “The Seraph” and the bottom says “Castiel”. The Hebrew that has been rotated 90 degrees and runs on either side of Cas is also translated above, “The one who loves the whole world. / The guard. / He who stands among the flowers and the bees. / The one who asks questions. / The shield.”

“Castiel” is not a biblically original angel so there is no official Hebrew spelling for the name. But there is a Cassiel (קפציאל, which is more phonetically accurately translated as “Qaftsiel” and over time morphed into “Cassiel”). I originally thought about basing Cas’ Hebrew name on Cassiel and making it “קפתיאל” (Qaftiel) with the same idea of that morphing over time into “Castiel” but decided instead to spell it “קשתיאל” (Qastiel), which is a more direct transliteration. A lot of Hebrew is based in words sharing three-letter roots and having that meaning shared across the words. So the spelling I used has the added bonus of using the root ק ש ת (quf shin taf), or, the word קשת (keshet) which means rainbow. Rainbows are for pride but biblically they are also symbolic of G-d’s promise after the great flood that he would not wreak such destruction upon humanity again. It’s a promise of peace.

Around Cas’ head and at his shoulders are the Seven Species. All are crops native to the Levant and their first fruits were the only accepted plant offerings in the days of Temple Judaism. His halo is made of the fruits and his wings the grains. The fruits are olives, dates, grapes, figs, and pomegranates. The grains are wheat and barley. I added these because of the connotations of nourishment and supplication, both of which felt fitting for Cas. Additionally, Cas is the angel of Thursday and in the Hebrew days of the week Thursday is the 5th day of the week so that is another reason only 5 of the 7 species are in the halo. Not to mention Cas is canonically conscious of the number of species in a room.

In the footer there are three more pieces of Jewish imagery: the evil eye, a fish, and a hamsa. 

The evil eye is often worn as a talisman to protect the wearer from evil spirits, much the way Cas does for those he loves. Plus, it’s literally a blue eye.

The fish is here because Cas was there when the first fish crawled out of the sea but also because in Judaism fish are associated with happiness and luck, and  fish’s eyes are likened to G-d’s protective gaze and protection.

The hamsa is firstly here because of the handprint Cas left on Dean.  But the hamsa is also about protection and further defense from evil. The hamsa is sometimes known as the hand of Mary, so this speaks to how Cas was watching over Dean when Mary could not. Additionally, the word “hamsa” is derived from the Arabic word for “five”. Plus let’s consider the five fingers of the hand. This makes four meanings to the number 5 in this piece and 4 is a meaningful number in Judaism.

Last but not least, the Magen David, aka the Star of David, but the literal translation is Shield of David, just as “Castiel” means “shield of G-d”.

!!!! If you want to take a break I’d love to hear more about the different angel lore you have the whole idea of angel being assigned planets or vice vera was such an interesting concept

OH YES absolutely i will take a break for this because i do have tones to say about all of this:

there really isn’t much angel/planet lore i’ve personally made about any other angel outside of cas being assigned saturn [or jupiter is welcome as well] (taking the place of cassiel, archangel of saturday and leader of saturn or going off of him as being the angel of thursday) and some connections that would have made supernatural in a sense more interesting 

this is up to whatever interpretation you’d like to think, but what i personally follow the indoctrine that every planet is assigned an archangel to govern it and then usually two other “normal” seraphs to help them out -- using my favorite go-to angel website (link to the screenshot if anyone is interested in checking it out)

here is just the most “common” list to find regarding archangels and in depth other characteristics i love, i also use the heptameron to find more angel/planet info for more of the lesser known angels. all of this is just so interesting and i’m always doing little bits of research because there’s literally just SO MUCH to learn about. oop, here’s another angel list that shows more of the angels and where’s they’re designated within the planets

i assume that this is something that not very many people know about and i want to talk about it more on here if people are interested! i for sure want to keep working on cassiel/castiel/saturn ongoing lore and PLEASE if anyone has the interest to join i would legit cry

I need a fic in which the almighty archangel Cassiel, charged with the rescue of one Dean Winchester, gets stripped of his power, demoted to seraph and forced to take the vacant position of Castiel, the angel of thursday, because he kept killing Dean on accident.

First by putting Dean's new body back into the buried coffin where Dean promptly suffocated, then by shattering the windows of the gas station which causes Dean to get stabbed to death by several shards of glass and lastly by showing Dean his true form during the séance with Pamela.

[It's poor Cassiel's first crush, he panicked, okay? This demotion is humiliating. And how is Cas...s supposed to impress Dean if he doesn't have all of his awe-inspiring archangel powers? It's the only way he knows how to flirt.]

[Meanwhile the other angels in heaven start a petition to lobotomize the former archangel, because they can't stand one more minute of Cas being pissy about his demotion and pining after the Michael Sword.]

BASICS

Name: Castiel

Nicknames: Cas (please not Cass!), Cassie (though he’s not particularly fond of this one), and the self-hating angel of thursday, just because :)

Age: Honestly? Who knows. He’s as old as creation, and we don’t know when that was in spn lore. He’s had lines like “in all my thousands of years,” though, so we knows he’s at least thousands of years old.

Gender and pronouns: Agender, usually presents as pretty masculine but has also had a female vessel before, so I headcanon that he Doesn’t Really Care. Uses he/him pronouns mostly, but feel free to use any pronouns for him, he’ll accept anything. 

Sexuality: Aspec, homoromantic

Species: Angel. Specifically a Seraph. if you’d like more information on angels in spn you can find detail on them here. You can also find Cas’ powers here, everything under Seraph abilities with the exception of time travel and teleportation (anything that involves his wings) are Cas’ current abilities.

Personality: Cas is driven by doing the right thing and his love for his found family. However, he’s also pretty naïve and has been easily manipulated into doing terrible things in the past, based on the belief that he was doing what was for the best. He’s determined, a good fighter, and is very compassionate. He’s also very awkward in social situations, doesn’t tend to understand social cues, etc. Has moments of being extremely soft and cute, but he’s also a complete badass, and can be kinda ruthless when he needs to be. He’s very smart! He used to be a soldier of Heaven who lead an army, and he’s very strategic because of it. 

HISTORY

You can find Cas’ backstory here but I’ll try to summarise the important stuff as best I can!

Met the Winchesters after pulling Dean from Hell. Was little more than a soldier of Heaven at first, did his job, followed orders, was basically emotionless. Started to doubt and feel the more he bonded with the brothers, especially Dean. Eventually rebelled against Heaven and their plan after Dean taught him the importance of free will.

Has died and been resurrected many times.

Lost the use of his wings when he was manipulated by Metatron to make all of the angels fall from Heaven, and to lock them out. He still has his wings, but they’re in very bad shape.

Has been to purgatory, heaven, hell, the empty, alternate universes... you name it, he’s probably been there (within the spn universe, anyway). 

Has been possessed by Lucifer.

Has been miserable for a very long time, to the point there’s a whole plot dedicated to how he will die when he finally allows himself to be happy. In the show, this happened when he finally confessed his love for Dean, but I’m bringing him from before then. 

Is in love with Dean, best friends with Sam, and a parental figure to Jack. 

MISC

Fucks up a lot but has also never done anything wrong ever.

Has Dad Issues. Chuck/God disappeared for years and years while the angels continued to worship him and do things in his name, then reappeared inserting himself in the Winchesters’ lives, then revealed himself to be God and disappeared again, then eventually revealed that he’s been controlling everyone (except Cas, because he, for some reason, didn’t follow Chuck’s plan), then killed Jack, and unleashed the souls of Hell. So yeah... Dad Issues.

Is currently possessing the corpse of Jimmy Novak, and Jimmy’s death has been stated to be one of his biggest regrets.

Feels responsible for Claire Novak, Jimmy’s daughter.

Not good with references even though Metatron once gave Cas all of his knowledge on every story he’s ever read/watched etc. (which is pretty much all of them)

Loves bees and pop music.

He’s autistic.

I’ll be bringing him from the end of 15x03. He literally just walked out of the bunker at the end of the episode when he was brought to Zerthea, so his ‘break up’ with Dean is very fresh.
