Some of the Best Golf Courses in New York

New York may be predominantly known for cultural landmarks and institutions like the Statue of Liberty, Broadway, and Madison Square Garden, but it is also a popular destination for golfers, with dozens of acclaimed courses throughout the state. Long Island, in particular, is regarded as one of the best golfing areas in the United States due to a combination of its early golf architectural features, ocean proximity, and sandy soil. New York had 17 courses included on Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest/Second 100 Greatest 2023-24 rankings, second only to California.
Both Golf Digest and Top 100 Golf Courses list Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton as the best course in the state. Designed by Willie Davis in the late 19th century, with updates by renowned architects Seth Raynor and Charles Macdonald, the private club is notable for a number of reasons. It stands as one of the first links courses in the United States; was one of the United States Golf Association's five founding members; and is home to one of the country's first specifically designed clubhouses, a white columned building that overlooks the 300-acre course below.
Shinnecock, which also overlooks the Peconic Bay, is known for its tough prevailing winds and rolling terrain, which prompted Charles Price, in the New World Atlas of Golf, to compare it to "British seaside links." It hosted the US Open for the first time in 1896 and again in 1986, 1995, 2004, and 2018. It is set to host the major championship in 2026.
National Golf Links of America, also located in Southampton, adjacent to Shinnecock, is widely regarded as the second-best course in the state. Raynor and Macdonald also collaborated on this private course, which incorporates design features from historic British golf holes. Many holes are directly inspired by iconic holes at UK golf courses, including No. 2, "Sahara," which is similar to No. 3 at Royal St. George's, and No. 4, "Redan," which emulates the angled No. 15 green at North Berwick.
The 6,935-yard course opened in 1911 and was ranked seventh in Golf Digest's list of Americaâs 100 Greatest Courses for 2023-24. Situated on more than 250 acres of rolling landscape, with varied topography and massive challenging greens, it hosted the inaugural Walker Cup in 1922 and again in 2013.
Golf Digest and Top 100 Golf Courses both rank Fishers Island, Winged Foot (West), and Friar's Head as the next three best courses in New York, although in different orders. Another Raynor design, Fishers Island opened in 1926, just after Raynor passed away. The course offers panoramic views of the Long Island Sound and Atlantic Ocean. Golf Digest has listed it as a top-five course in the state in all of its rankings since 2005 and had it as the ninth-best course in the country for 2023-24.
Friar's Head, meanwhile, is also located near Shinnecock. A more modern course designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, it opened on 350 acres of rugged landscape in 2003. It is unique in that it doesn't have yardage markers, and players must use caddies at all times. Greens vary from 3,000 to 18,000 square feet, and some are protected by massive bearded bunkers.
The West course at Winged Foot Golf Club, ranked No. 4 in New York by Golf Digest, is known for its impressive green contours and open fairways. It has 10 par-4s that are longer than 400 yards and a fairly difficult final six holes, including a 210-yard par-3. Bryson DeChambeau won the 2020 US Open at the West course.

Golf Digest's Top Six Courses in Illinois

Golf Digest, one of the world's leading golf publications, has scored and ranked the top courses in the United States every year since 1966. For its 2023 list of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses, the publication sought input from more than 1,800 panelists, who played and evaluated each course based on criteria such as conditioning and character, shot options, and aesthetics. In compiling this list, Golf Digest also creates rankings of the best courses in each state.
Illinois is among the premier states in the country for golf, with six courses ranked in Golf Digest's 2023 America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses list. It also has two courses in the Second 100 Greatest list. According to Golf Digest, the stateâs 11th-best course, Beverly Country Club in Chicago, is superior to the top golf courses in major cities including San Diego, Miami, and Houston.
The Chicago Golf Club (CGC) in Wheaton is the state's best course and the 13th best in the country, according to Golf Digest. The club is home to the first 18-hole course in the United States, built by renowned course architect C.B. Macdonald and opened in 1893. CGC has been first in Golf Digest's state rankings every year since 2011 and has been included on America's 100 Greatest list every year since 1971. It has remained relatively unchanged since Seth Raynor, a former surveyor and engineer under Macdonald, redesigned the course in 1923.
The Chicago Golf Club has hosted several notable tournaments since its inception, including the U.S. Open in 1987, 1900, and 1911. More recently, it hosted the Walker Cup, an amateur competition involving teams of American and United Kingdom players, in 2005. It also hosted the 2018 U.S. Senior Women's Open and is slated to host the U.S. Women's Open in 2033 and the Walker Cup in 2036.
Previously ranked as the third-best course in the state, Shoreacres Golf Club in Lake Bluff moved up to No. 2 in Golf Digest's 2023 rankings. Also designed by Raynor, the course features fascinating topography and perhaps the most unique stretch of three holes (11, 12, and 13) on any golf course in the 100 Greatest list. The private course opened in 1921 and has been among the top-five courses in the state since 2017.
Butler National Golf Club in Oak Brook dropped back one spot to No. 3 in the statewide rankings. Created by former PGA Tour player George Fazio, the course features 10 holes with forced carries over water. It was once the permanent host site of the Western Open, but it relinquished its hosting duties in 1990 after refusing to change its men-only policy. Butler National is one of four clubs in the Chicago area that still doesn't offer membership to women.
Canyata Golf Club, Medinah Country Club Course 3, and the Olympia Fields Country Clubâs North course are the other three Illinois courses on America's 100 Greatest list. Canyata, in Marshall, was created by developer and energy executive Jerry Forsythe, who wanted to transform 300 acres of his family property into a three-hole golf course. Over time, with the help of architect Bob Lohmann, he built the area into an 18-hole course with artificial creeks, waterscaped ponds, and sophisticated bunkers.
Medinah Country Club Course 3 has hosted several major tournaments since 1949. These include the 2012 Ryder Cup, 2006 PGA Championship, and 1990 U.S. Open. It is slated to host the Presidents Cup in 2026. Olympia Fields Country Clubâs North course, meanwhile, hosted the 2023 BMW Championship, 2017 KPMG Women's PGA Championship, and 2003 U.S. Open, among other notable events.

Rock Spring Golf Club
Iâve heard nothing but rave reviews about Rock Spring Golf Club. This year, I finally made the day trip from the City to West Orange, New Jersey to play.
The course, designed by the legendary Seth Raynor, is incredible. The greens are absolutely massive, and they are generally guarded by collections of deep, picturesque bunkers. So while the tee shots are mostly fair and forgiving, you have to hit precise approach shots to score well. Overall, the course is fun, interesting, and filled with compelling angles and memorable long lag putts.Â
Unfortunately, I played on a cloudy day so I couldnât capture any photos of the New York City skyline, which is usually visible from the course. Hopefully next time!

Womenâs Open Recap
Two weeks ago I had the privilege of officiating at my first US Womenâs Open. I have a few takeaways. First, the Country Club of Charleston is a fantastic Seth Raynor designed golf course. It has many old school putting green and bunkering features that one doesnât see anymore. Second, the women play a sublime style of golf. Tee-to-green theyâre straight hitters and add a first-rate short game. My only complaint was their pace of play. Each round lasted longer than a Beto OâRourke road trip.

Bellarine Restaurant Being Outing Goal Know The Place Better
The golf course on the Bellarine restaurant Peninsula has been renovated in the style of a bygone period. The Bellarine Peninsula golf course snakes over salt marshes and wetlands and expands out across coastal dunes beside the gorgeous Lake Victoria, with an intriguing layout unique to Australia. Lonsdale Links is a par-70 course with bouncy fairways, high winds, and tricky green complexes, making it suited for even the most experienced golfer.
The goal was to design a strategic course that would disclose more of itself with each round of golf ocean grove on the Bellarine Peninsula. The Bellarine golf course was created by Ogilvy Cocking Mead (OCM) as an intentional throwback with template holes throughout, drawing inspiration from trailblazer Charles Blair Macdonald and his associates Seth Raynor and Charles Banks.
Lonsdale Links incorporates elements of these designs and the holes that inspired them, such as the first hole, Alps, which offers panoramic views of Lake Victoria and pushes players to take on the dune off the tee to reach the first square green.

These ardent golfers and friends desired a classic course with superb conditions and grass greens from the start because it would not only be accepted for personal usage but also serve as a tourist attraction, attracting golfers to the area.
Then it was time for some strenuous physical labor. Almost all of this was accomplished entirely via the efforts of these individuals and their friends and families. The job of cleaning and leveling the ground was started after a nine-hole course was mapped out.
This steadfast group of town residents and vacation homes from all walks of life started out with one goal in mind: to build a prestigious golf course with top-notch playing facilities.
Along with eager would-be golfers, some horse-drawn equipment was used. The grass was put on the greens but took a long time to grow, so sand scrapes were built near each green to be utilized until the grass was sufficiently strong and ready.
Lonsdale Links (Lonsdale Golf Club Inc.) has undergone a complete course and Clubhouse redevelopment, as well as subdividing and selling land and purchasing neighboring acreage to extend onto, almost 100 years later. In December 2020, the reconstruction will be completed.
Biarritz, Plateau, Eden, Leven, Punchbowl, Thumbprint, Redan, and Road are some of the other template holes that have influenced me. Lonsdale Links is an 18-hole links golf course in Point Lonsdale's coastal dunes, surrounding the magnificent Lake Victoria.

The Bellarine Peninsula golf course, which was recently rebuilt, is now open for play. The redesigned layout takes advantage of the expansive views that can be seen from both the new and old holes. 'Mulligans,' a new practice range and 6-hole par-3 course, is also available.
A state-of-the-art Clubhouse, designed by Wood Marsh Architecture, complements the course. The building, which is situated on the crest of a hill, can be seen from a variety of perspectives, emerging above the trees as golfers navigate the Bellarine golf ocean grove.
The Clubhouse is open to the public and features a lounge, separate restaurant, outdoor Kiosk, and children's playground, making it a fun place for the whole family. The Golfers Lounge has an open fire and views of Lake Victoria at sunset. During daylight savings, the Kiosk serves food and drinks during the day, and a takeaway menu is available at night.

Tripp Davis and Associates Celebrates 25 Years of Golf Course Design Excellence
Golf course architecture firm Tripp Davis and Associates is celebrating 25 years of world-class golf course design work this year.Â
âI feel unusually fortunate to have been able to survive, and often thrive, in such a tough profession, especially since I did not work for one of the name architects before starting my own firm,â says Davis. âThere is no question our commitment to doing great work, and to be uncompromising in doing so, has been a reason we have made it, but that would not have been possible without having a lot of great clients with vision and trust in us, and all of the exceptional construction talent we have been able to work with. I have also been very fortunate to have had great talent within our company, with most everyone that ever worked here lasting 10 years or longer.â
A highly regarded amateur golfer, Tripp decided to follow the profession of golf course architect instead of pursuing a playing career and that decision has paid off.
The award-winning original design and restoration/renovation projects by Tripp Davis and Associates have been praised highly for their strategic substance, giving Davis the recognition as a âcraftsmanâ of the most strategically interesting and enjoyable golf courses of our time.Â
Recent and current work by Tripp Davis and Associates includes Northwood Club, Dallas, Texas; Oak Hills Country Club, San Antonio, Texas; Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club, Norman, Oklahoma; Jimmie Austin Golf Club at University of Oklahoma and the OU practice course called The Ransom Course; Brook Hollow Golf Club, Dallas Texas; Old American Golf Club, The Colony, Texas; The Tribute Golf Links, The Colony, Texas; Oak Tree National, Edmond, Oklahoma (site of the 2014 U.S. Senior Open); Preston Trail Golf Club, Dallas, Texas; The Whippoorwill Club, Armonk, New York and Spring Lake Golf Club, Spring Lake, New Jersey.
The Tribute Golf Club in Dallas, which opened in 2000, was the firmâs first big break with new course construction. And in the same year, being hired to rebuild a green at Engineers Country Club on the north shore of Long Island was Davisâ first opportunity with a historic restoration project. Since that time, Davis has been fortunate to work at many of the most historic clubs in the country. An admirer of Perry Maxwell, A.W. Tillinghast, C.B. Macdonald, Seth Raynor and Charles Banks, Davis now is regarded as one of the leading restoration specialists in the U.S.  Â
About Tripp Davis and Associates
Tripp Davis and Associates (TDA) was founded in 1994 and has offices in Norman, Oklahoma, and New York City. TDA practices golf architecture with an unparalleled passion for craftsmanship of unique landscapes and strategic details. Tripp Davis, a decorated amateur golfer, was a member of the 1989 National Championship Golf Team and a NCAA All-American selection while at the University of Oklahoma. He continues to play in several prestigious amateur events each year.Â
Trippâs abilities as a world-class player give him a unique insight into those subtle details in strategy that can make a golf course an interesting challenge for better players, while proving an enjoyable test for the average golfer. His knowledge of the game has also been incorporated into the development of innovative practice facilities that give players the opportunity to practice the right shots in the right way, thus expanding their golfing abilities and their appreciation for the game.Â
Davis earned a Masterâs Degree in Landscape Architecture from The University of Oklahoma and is a Member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects.Â

Overlooked No More: Joseph Bartholomew, Golf Course Architect

Since 1851, many remarkable black men and women did not receive obituaries in The New York Times. This month, with Overlooked, weâre adding their stories to our archives. As an African-American youngster â as young as 7 years old, some say â Joseph Bartholomew caddied in the afternoons at the private, whites-only Audubon Park Club golf course in New Orleans, earning $3 a day. There he learned the game by watching the men whose bags he bore on his shoulders.Bartholomew prided himself on his caddying skills, particularly in finding errant shots.âIt distracts a golf player to lose his ball,â he was quoted as saying in the reference book âAfrican-American Business Leaders: A Biographical Dictionaryâ (1994). âI never lost one golf ball a year.âAudubonâs club professional, Freddie McLeod, who would go on to win the 1908 United States Open, taught Joseph how to repair clubs and eventually offered him a job.The catch?âHe told me,â Bartholomew later recalled, ââI canât give you $3, just 50 cents.ââMost people wouldnât dare take such a pay cut, or such a risk. But, Bartholomew said: âI figured I can learn more from Mr. McLeod than I can as a caddie. So, I took it.âLearn, the young man did.Bartholomew would one day become the greens superintendent and give lessons â as many as 12 per day at $2 per lesson. And beyond that he would become an admired golf course designer. But it would take decades for him to get to that point. And through it all â as he rose from caddie to club repairman to superintendent to course designer â Bartholomew, a black man in the Jim Crow South, was barred from playing at Audubon or any other segregated private club, even those whose courses he designed.Joseph Manuel Bartholomew was born on Aug. 1, 1888, in New Orleans to Manuel and Alice Bartholomew. He was ambitious from a young age. He once asked a teacher if there would be any objection to his completing two grades in one year. âShe said no,â he told Sports Illustrated in 1966, âso I went ahead and skipped.âBartholomew was in his 30s, in the early 1920s, when local golfers, impressed with his interest in the game and his work as a groundskeeper, collaborated to send him to a golf architecture school in New York, where he studied with the golf course architect Seth Raynor.âWhooo, but I was surprised,â Bartholomew told Fortune magazine in 1949. âThey gave me a whole bunch of money and told me to go and find the best course in the world and bring it back.âHe did even better, returning with the design for a course composed of holes modeled on famous ones at courses throughout the United States and Scotland. The golfers liked it, and hired him to build it. Opening in the â20s, it was called Metairie County Club, and he was named its first club professional. But while he was permitted to give lessons, he was not allowed to play a round of golf there. Indeed, he was hired to design and build several more golf courses in the area for white golfers but barred from playing them.Undeterred, he eventually built a seven-hole course on property he owned in Harahan, La., a Mississippi River town west of New Orleans. And in Pontchartrain Park in New Orleans he built Louisianaâs first municipal golf course for African Americans.By the time he died on Oct. 12, 1971, at 83, Bartholomew had been celebrated as a golf course architect by Sports Illustrated. In 1972, he was posthumously elected into the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame. And in 1979, the City of New Orleans renamed its Pontchartrain Park golf course the Joseph M. Bartholomew Sr. Municipal Golf Course. After building his courses, Bartholomew rented his construction equipment to white contractors. And just as he had learned golf by watching the players he caddied for, he learned the construction business by observing, on the job, the men who had rented his equipment.Working with, and not just for, white men was unusual for black men in the South, but Bartholomew had become accustomed to it. âDonât try to outsmart the white folks â theyâre smart,â he told Fortune. âBe honest, listen and learn.âAnd make money. Bartholomew started his own construction enterprise, focusing on drainage, foundations and landscaping. He landed contracts with large public and private housing projects in New Orleans, as well as for office buildings and factories. He didnât stop there. He invested contracting profits in a fledgling life insurance company named for Frederick Douglass. It was losing money when he bought it in 1940 and took over as president. Nine years later it was thriving, headquartered in a building that Bartholomew had bought.Bartholomew turned his attention to real estate full time when a man for whom he once caddied came to him to be a partner on a land-improvement venture. They bought hundreds of acres of rough land and, using Bartholomewâs equipment, drained and upgraded the property. They then sold it, with some parcels going for more than 10 times what they had paid.In what may have been Bartholomewâs ultimate venture, he built an ice cream plant for $75,000. By 1949, it was raking in profits.Bartholomew rarely saw a risk that wasnât worth taking, and he told Fortune he believed that that had been the key to his success.âThatâs the difference between me and most of the rest of the colored people,â he said. âThey wonât take a chance because theyâve been skinned before. I take âem all the time.â Read the full article
