TECHNOLOGY POLICE REPORT: Pennsylvanian Duolingo Mascot 'Duo Renee Lingo' fatally struck in Tesla Cybertruck, alongside 3 mascot friends found dead [#OnlyOnOneNETnews]
PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA -- Green owl mascot 'Duo Renee Lingo', alongside his friends Lily, Zari and Falstaff was fatally struck by a Tesla Cybertruck last week on Tuesday (February 11th, 2025 -- Eastern local time). The language-learning community has been reeling since the incident.
The company announced the unfortunate news on social media stating: "It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that [Duo Renee Lingo], formally known as The Duolingo Owl has died [today]". It was later disclosed that Duo and her friends were victims of a hit-and-run with the said vehicle, while others in separate ways are in sudden death. Duolingo is offering a reward for information that helps identify the suspected driver.
The incident has received so much attention, including condolences from celebrities and organizations. The fallen mascots were remembered by British-Albanian pop star 'Ms. Dua Lipa', as well as the World Health Organization (WHO).
For one, it was founded in late-November 2011 by 'Luis von Ahn' and 'Severin Hacker'. Duolingo is an independent language-learning platform that teaches in more than 40 languages. Here in the Philippines, they did not have any Tagalog or Cebuano courses. The app uses gamification techniques to create engaging and accessible learning, with 'Duo Renee Lingo' the Owl as its motivational mascot who encourages users to finish their lessons.
A week passed from the event, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Duolingo 'Mr. Luis von Ahn' gave an exclusive press statement to OneNETnews, where he recently spoke about it. Luis said he was heartbroken over the loss, adding that the incident was not part of a marketing stunt: "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Duo and his friends. This scene of the incident is real, and we are closely working with local authorities in our headquarters of Pennsylvania to have the responsible party taken on the chase", he said.
Luis also expressed that Duo's mascot companions legacy lives on. Duolingo continues to provide the service "ensuring language services is publicly available for everyone". He asked users to carry on with their lessons to honor the mascots saying: "The best way to honor Duo's memory is to keep learning and embracing new languages on your own", he concluded.
The investigation is ongoing, and Duolingo calls for anyone with information must come forward immediately. Communities continue to pay tribute to the mascots and inspire children, teens and adults together, in feelings of gratitude for the joy and motivation that they brought to millions of learners across the country and around the world.

Owl See You Soon
Marketingland is filled with a lot of craziness. Already this semester we have seen it in the form of Oreos centered on a pop star, and Heinz mustard—I mean Mustard—doing similarly. Coinbase broke the internet during Super Bowl 2022 with its QR code sliding across the screen. I could write a book about these things.
Lest we marketers ever be accused of falling asleep at the wheel and not continuing to come up with some fresh, creative ideas, Duolingo, the popular app for learning new languages, just staged an epic stunt that has the social graph abuzz.
They killed their mascot.
Before I go on, I must salute my student, Joshua Ruiz, for bringing this one to my attention, as it had completely missed my radar. I will also issue an invite to everyone else to please feel free to send me blog ideas. I can’t possibly see everything there is to see.
But back to Duolingo, which sent its owl to a deep six last week. Videos seen online showed their beloved owl in a casket, eyes Xd out and mourners tossing flower petals. A pickup truck with the gate down drove off as if it were a hearse, leaving Duolingo fans to cry in their language soup.
Here’s the great part: This stunt has dominated post-Super Bowl conversations to the point that it accounts for 84% of them. Holy cow. A company shelling out more than $7 million could only hope for so much, maybe even just five- or ten-percent.
Duolongo views this is a brand-building exercise. There are numerous competing apps for learning new languages, such as Memrise, Rocket Languages, and Pimsleur, but the biggest foe is Babbel. It thus behooves Duolingo to double down.
It’s not like Duolingo is hurting. In Q3 of 2024, they had 37.2 million Daily Active Users (DAUs), which grew 54% year-over-year. Revenues grew by 40% compared to Q3 2023. In contrast, Babbel, which is based in Germany, is also experiencing rapid growth, but is still second to Duolingo.
Duolingo was founded by Luis von Ahn and Severin Hacker in 2011. But there’s more back story than meets the eye, because von Ahn earlier created the CAPTCHA system of web authentication. CAPTCHA is actually an acronym, standing for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. The result is those annoying challenges requiring us to select all the blurry images with boats, bicycles, or whatever the algorithm wants to mess with us.
Thank you very little, Dr. von Ahn.
As for the dead mascot stunt, it is not exactly new. Planters Peanuts killed off their mascot, Mr. Peanut, on 22 January 2020, and then staged his funeral during Super Bowl 54 a few weeks later. He came back to life, though, as Baby Nut.
There is risk in doing such stunts, especially when you mess with your mascot. There is a certain finality associated with death, and according to Christian accounts, Jesus Christ is the only human ever to rise from the grave. You can’t just resurrect your mascot and say JK.
Can you imagine a world in which Cap’n Crunch, Tony the Tiger, and Toucan Sam died? Why, the breakfast cereal aisle would never be the same, and I suspect those brands would suffer. Heck, why tinker with success after you’ve spent millions of dollars building a brand around an anthropomorphic mascot?
And, perhaps more importantly, will people be more likely to download Duolingo thanks to this marketing stunt? We shall see.
There is a huge benefit to all of this growth among language apps, because only 20% of Americans speak more than one language. Maybe this signifies a trend, that we are hungry to learn other languages and seek to become better global citizens. There really is no excuse, even if you grew up in an insular white bread neighborhood.
There is another huge takeaway from this, too, and that is Dr. von Ahn is an immigrant. This is me talking here, but in my view, we MUST get a grip on the immigration issue. Given the fact we are dying and having babies at the same rate these days, the only way our population will grow is through immigration. And, as Dr. Zeke Hernandez clearly shows in “The Truth About Immigration,” immigrants don’t take our jobs. No, they create them. They bring new ideas. They innovate. And they create wealth.
As usual, I digress. This is highly recommended reading when you’re not busy taking classes. And you never know. The next immigrant we welcome might just start a company that goes on to kill its mascot in one of the greatest marketing stunts of the day.

Visual Diary 12b - Responsible Design Leaders
I've been an admirer of the innovative human-centered product design Luis von Ahn, Ph.D. and Severin Hacker, founder of the Duolingo Language Learning App, created with a dual purpose of a free (and "freemium") way for language learning on a global scale and improvement of internet translation services.

Luis von Ahn, is currently the CEO of Duolingo and explemplifies to me what responsible human-centered design should look like with transparency in the company's commitment, mission, and design strategies as well as providing users and other stakeholders with a glance of the company's operational and financial updates. Duolingo provides an opportunity for anyone to learn a new language by offering the app for free but also understands that generating revenue from offering an optional paid premium offering allows for increased visibility for the market segment that wants to go deeper into their learning.
Offering Duolingo online took away from the need to purchase language learning cassettes, CDs, or DVDs. of yesteryear. At Duolingo's infancy, von Ahn, also a Guatemalan entrepreneur, understood how fortunate he was to receive the opportunity to travel outside of Guatemala for education his family was financially well off so designing Duolingo was a way to help fellow Guatemalans and others to learn English so they can also be afforded financial opportunities that will give them a better quality of life. When you are designing with such an important cause and market segment in mind, you are responsible for what you say you will do and you're also responsible for being thorough in your research, design thinking, and your "what ifs" to make sure you doing all you can to produce a service that not only does no harm to others but also enrich lives along the way.
Duolingo's open financial reporting on its website shows transparency that stakeholders, as well as competitors, to see where the company is financially, and what areas need a financial boost, and I feel this generates feedback from stakeholders that can be integrated into the overall business model updates and implementation design the company needs to maintain in some areas and expand in other areas. With a culturally and socially conscious backing to help others, Duolingo is the design solution by which that goal may be realized. Putting people first, in my opinion, will continue to expand how we navigate human-centered design. This inspires me daily.

In this era of online schooling, educational apps have become new teachers for students. These apps are interactive, and many have features like animated videos to make the subject interesting. Any app store on this day has thousands of apps that help students with their studies. It is tough to choose which one to use. For every field, you'll find apps like languages, competitive exams, literature, professional skills, history, etc.

The organization has an app, but they have a YouTube channel and several websites like bankersadda.com, teachersadda.com, etc. Adda247 has resources for exams of SBI, RBI, IBPS, Railways, Staff Selection Commission, etc. They also offer Ebooks, books, mock tests, video courses, and live classes.

🖊 for any of your OCs?
The Titan
Captain Yuè Qīngshuǎng. Fireteam Leader, Titan, Sunbreaker. She was found by Warren, her Ghost, in the Old Cosmodrome on the Amur Oblast. Her remains were situated in such a way that her hands appeared to be holding a pair of Pinming cups.
She is old enough to have fought with distinction at the Battle of Six Fronts and the Battle of Twilight Gap. She still wears the Mark of Six Fronts, as well as her Iron Banner gear. She is a proud Young Wolf, long an admirer of her Titan mentors Saladin, Shaxx, and Zavala, and personal heroes such as the Lady Jolder, Liu Feng, Wei Nin. She is a capable commander and quick-witted strategist who will often take up support roles at odds with the stereotypical Titan combat model.
Since learning that, in this version of the City, she and her fireteam died in the Great Disaster, she has been beset by nightmares of the Hellmouth. She will stare at the fractured surface of Luna and think of how she failed her best friends, her fireteam, and how their remains are in the sky above while they’re still alive in the room next door. She’ll think of how the Light-starved Thrall in the deepest recesses of the damned pit are sucking every last molecule from their bones, and how she could have prevented it. How she should have listened to Shaxx. How she should have known the Consensus had no idea how to run a military op, especially one against the Hive.
Yuè spends a steadily increasing number of hours in the field, on patrols, running bounties, collecting supplies wherever she can to support her fireteam and their newest…Kinderguardian. It’s not completely altruistic; while the team needs glimmer and raw materials, Yuè avoids interpersonal confrontation. She will defend a friend or a stranger without hesitation. When it comes to her own defense, unless the threat is a danger, she doesn’t know how to proceed. Her emotional and mental well being are two states she is ill-prepared to address. Instead, she hides in her work, running away starside to avoid seeing a relationship develop, opting instead to push herself to the edge of her limits and get shot.
The Hunter
Atsuko-5 is the second-in-command of the fireteam and the balance between the team leader and the team medic. She is older than her Captain, but younger than her junior in terms of years.
The Exo was resurrected by her Ghost in the Forgotten Shores of the Cosmodrome. She had no artifacts with her, little in the way of nothing to point to her life prior to being Chosen by the Traveler other than the fact that at some point she had been human and she had gotten a trip to Encecladus courtesy of Clovis Bray.
The remains of a long disbanded military’s battalion dress uniform were natural considering she was an Exo. There was hardly anything left of the material despite it being a high-grade impact-resistant fabric. Akio, her Ghost, theorized that while he had discovered her in a cave, the surrounding rocks evidenced activity over the centuries, so she likely started off on the plateau several hundred meters above and lost her pants that way.
Like most Exos, she has remnants of her original memories, and flashes of shared memory from another Exo. Atsuko-5 has no idea of who those fragments are from, and has no frame of reference for her own scant recollections.
Unlike her Fireteam Leader, the Exo Hunter is old enough to have been a part of the City Age and she helped protect pilgrims en route to the Last City, providing watch along the Takanome Trail as a sniper. She fought at the Battle of Six Fronts and the Battle of Twilight Gap.
She is one of the few Bladedancers remaining and, as a Hunter, she is skilled at scouting and reconnaissance and has proven herself to be an accomplished hacker and thief. In the field, she is naturally on point and providing over-watch as a sniper. This behavior carries over in some small fashion to the way in which she takes care of her fireteam. She is the calming influence on Yuè those rare times she loses her composure and the voice of maturity for Severin on the multiple occasions he acts impulsively.
Atsuko-5 is a woman of few words, opting for a less is more approach, with Akio being of a similar mien.
The Warlock
Simultaneously the oldest and the youngest of the fireteam in terms of age and behavior respectively, Jonathan Martin Severin is a Warlock of the Praxic Order and a Reef Awoken. He is the team’s medic and is a Sunsinger, a sub-class that is for all intents and purposes extinct.
His Ghost located him in wreckage of a Galliot that had crashed on the outskirts of the European Dead Zone. Severin and his ship had been there for some time. There was no evidence of Fallen scavenging, however. Outside of the catastrophic damage it had sustained on atmospheric entry and landing, little else had occurred over the ages aside from nature taking its course.
Severin believes he remembers some elements of his life prior to being Chosen. After being granted entry to the Reef, he felt he gained more access to those parts of his memory. When the Dreaming City was opened to the fireteam, he had expected a better sense of who he had been. It’s something that Severin is still working through.
Generally, his personality is that of a flirtatious, somewhat foolish man who seems naive one moment and cunning the next. He will go to sometimes outlandish extremes to make others laugh and uses his charm as a cover for his ruthless side. The usual targets for his flirtations are his fireteam leader, who returns them in kind, and the Exo, who takes great delight in blowing him off.
Severin’s responsibilities as the team’s medic have given him years of training and experience that would make him a doctor several dozen times over, a fact he enjoys sharing. His Ghost, named Cheshire, enjoys pointing out that Severin is not licensed to practice anywhere on Earth or elsewhere in the Solar System.

When we were getting started, we had hired Silver Orange, an awesome design and development agency, to help us with our design and identity. As we were giving them guidance on what we wanted, our co-founder and CTO Severin Hacker (yes, that’s his real name) said “I don’t much care what you do in terms of style, but please don’t use green. I hate green.” Our mascot is a green owl because we wanted to annoy Severin.

How Duolingo is disrupting the language learning market By: Leo Shi
I’ve always been intrigued by the language learning market because for me, I’ve only experienced learning languages very organically. In addition to my native language of English, I am also fluent in Mandarin Chinese and conversational in French. For Chinese, I grew up speaking it with my family, and besides toiling away in highschool French for three years, most, if not all of my French came from the 5 months I spent studying abroad in Paris. For me, it doesn’t seem conceivable to truly learn a language any other way besides being fully immersed in it on a day-to-day basis, which is why I find Duolingo so fascinating. Launched back in 2011, Duolingo has redefined the language learning market and is continuously pushing the envelope. Founded by Carnegie Mellon professor Luis von Ahn and his graduate student at the time, Severin Hacker, they had a vision for Duolingo to provide free, accessible education to millions worldwide. Growing up in Guatemala, von Ahn took note of how expensive it was for people to learn English, and he set out to change that with Duolingo. While Duolingo is still free to this day, it does now employ ads on both its Android and iPhone apps. For the first few years of its existence however, Duolingo actually didn’t even need ads thanks to its very clever business model of crowdsourcing where organizations such as CNN and Buzzfeed would pay Duolingo to translate their content.

While there are tons of language learning apps on the market, ranging from Memrise to Rosetta Stone, Duolingo has consistently been able to separate itself from the pack. This is because Duolingo doesn’t conform to traditional language learning methods. A big thing that Duolingo harps on is how you can learn a brand new language just by spending 5 minutes on the app everyday completing exercises. Of course, if you’d like to make it more of a priority, Duolingo allows that too, as it is completely tailored to a user’s level of proficiency and how much effort he/she wants to exert on a daily basis. Instead of approaching learning a new language as this arduous process, Duolingo markets it as something you can do on the side for fun. While it still does take countless hours to even begin sounding conversational in a new language, it doesn’t come across that way to a user who’s preoccupied by Duolingo’s interactive interface and lessons. Which brings us to user retention, probably the most important aspect for language learning apps such as Duolingo. The thought of learning a new language is often exciting so getting users to download these apps isn’t the problem, but once reality sets in and users start realizing that learning Spanish or Japanese or French wasn’t as easy as they thought it would be, they quit. Amongst the language learning market, Duolingo has been able to distinguish itself in this regard as over 30% of people who sign up to Duolingo become long-term active users. While this figure may not sound incredibly impressive, it’s important to keep in perspective that user retention is intrinsically low for the language learning market. For example, another big player in the language learning market is busuu, who only boasts a 5% rate for users who go onto become long-term active users.

Duolingo is constantly using its data to improve the metrics and restructure the learning experience for all users. Not only are Duolingo courses heavily backed by research, but they’re almost always themed as well which helps to really engage the user. They also emphasize practicality. Unlike traditional language learning contexts where students are thrown nouns, adjectives, and verbs separately, Duolingo combines these in their lesson plans and introduces new grammatical concepts gradually so users don’t feel overwhelmed and are able to form natural, coherent phrases starting from the very beginning, instilling them with a sense of confidence to continue on. Also, anyone who’s used Duolingo extensively before can attest to how invested Duolingo keeps you with their daily streak notifications. Some days you may be busier than others, but you’ll always be willing to log onto Duolingo for a couple minutes just to keep your streak alive, which really, at the crux of it, is what learning new languages is all about, consistent practice and repetition. Even though I’ve only been back from study abroad for a few months, I already feel my level of French inevitably dropping off. I’ve incorporated Duolingo into my daily routine to make sure I don’t completely forget all my French and it’s certainly felt more enjoyable than cumbersome (currently on a 42 day streak). Something Duolingo also prides itself on are the metrics it uses to measure a user’s progress. While the lessons themselves certainly are very important and need to be developed accordingly, Duolingo invests just as much resources into measuring user’s progress as that’s what keeps them coming back to the app. Learning a new language can be overwhelming so when Duolingo says, “You are 27% fluent in French!” it’s encouraging as they are somehow able to quantify your progress.
However, developing these metrics are no small feat. In fact, Duolingo integrates AI and machine learning within their software for this exact purpose and is hoping to leverage machine learning capabilities in other pursuits as well, such as entering the language assessment market. The Test of English as Foreign Language exam (TOEFL) represents a traditional barrier for university-entry to international students worldwide, and Duolingo is hoping to disrupt that market by using their deep-learning models and AI infrastructure to produce other language proficiency tests. Duolingo’s founder Luis von Ahn has already stated that this integration of AI/machine learning is a huge priority for them right now as they hope to continue leveraging these capabilities to effectively scale their high-quality education in the future, not just limited to an app on a digital level, but across other platforms as well.

Duolingo filed to go public
Duolingo filed to go public
Duolingo, a Pittsburgh-based language learning business last valued at $2.4 billion, has officially filed to go public. The 400-person company, which we explored in great detail in our EC-1, was co-founded by Luis von Ahn, the inventor of CAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA, and Severin Hacker. One of the most revealing bits of its story? It’s a route to monetization as a then rare edtech consumer business…
