Shade Slayers - Pepper
Tumblr media
"I'm just saying, lugging all this ooze from that cave is disgusting-" the wildclaw complained, as they pulled their hand out of the satchel. "Brambles and thorns, another bottle broke! My notes are all soaked now!"
"Oh quit your yapping," the burly ridgeback barked, slapping the smaller wildclaw on their back, almost knocking their glasses off. "It's good money!"
The duo marched over to the deeper lake, eyes scanning at the dragons - both the humanoid and fourlegged kind - milling about by the beach. It was then the wildclaw cleared his throat, giving curious look to their companion. "You sure she will buy these things?"
"Oh she will! Miss Pepper said she'll buy anything off of us."
"Well, where is she then?" the smaller of the duo adjusted their glasses again, swallowing thickly. The ridgeback merely shrugged, sitting down by a rock.
"They said she'd be by the lake, so... Guess we'll just wait?" she commented, opening her bag to go through the items one by one again. "Would be rather irresponsible for the treasurer of the guild not to be around all the time without a warning."
"Oh I am around," a feminine voice echoed, before a large body emerged from the water - towering over both of the new adventurers, slowly soaking them as waterdroplets fell from the scales and fins on to them.
The ridgeback had the decency to jump back, startled, while the Wildclaw hiccuped, taking their sleeve and yanking desperately. "We should've just asked directions-"
The gargantuan dragon stared down at them, before lowering her face to their level. "Now," she rumbled, a smile spreading on her features, revealing rows of sharp teeth. "Let's talk business."
"I'll write a short story for each" I said. "It'll be fun and quick" I said. Look at me go, several paragraphs in.
ANYWAYS, Shade Slayers update! We have officially started on working on Pepper, as one of my friends/players on the RP has agreed to help me out. We have her great grandparents in a lair chilling now, one pair already busy in the nest 8D
As you can see, she is (supposedly) a massive Undertide treasurer of the Shade Slayers guild. She buys junk you find in dungeons for a flat-fee, and makes sure you get compensated fairly for your jobs. She is also however a little mischievous, and enjoys playing pranks on the newbies like this.
In Shade Slayers AU, Ancients do not have surnames - it is completely new invention by the newer generations, and while they respect it they also don't quite understand it.

Hello, I'm back, with things I have noticed about Eragon that makes parts of the book very strange or funny or sad
Garrow's farm is TEN MILES OUT from Carvahall, which is already small. What the hell was he thinking??? It takes like 3.5 hours to walk that much???? And Eragon walks FURTHER THAN THAT to go hunting at 15???? Go behind you??
When hunting in the beginning, Eragon spends days just going for one doe. Which, all things considered, is not a lot of meat, especially for what's probably a 4 day hunt. For one person, it's unrealistic to carry more than that, but still.
Leading on from that, I'm led to believe that their family probably mostly ate bread and vegetables, and maybe cheese. No wonder he's pretty attached to meat.
Despite living so far away, Brom knows Eragon's knack for asking Too Many Questions, which implies this happens often.
How the hell does Brom make money? Storytelling??? There's only so much money that can get you in fifteen years, he's definitely got something on the side. He was a gardener in Morzan's estate for a while...
So far up north and isolated, Eragon DEFINITELY has a STRONG farmer's accent. Combined with his formal training with the elves, he probably has the weirdest way of talking, where it's both overly formal and casual at the same time.
Eragon is such a prodigy it's not even funny. By the time he meets Murtagh, he's a good enough swordsman after JUST A FEW MONTHS that they're literally equal. Murtagh has been doing that his WHOLE LIFE with a really good swordsman. Magic also comes pretty good to him, even if he's not always sensible with it. He learns to read well enough to read full books in a week.
Eragon and Roran are pretty similar with the dangerous stunts they pull, except Eragon's are usually with magic and Roran's are physical. They are both absurdly intelligent too, even if Eragon is known to act like a dolt sometimes. In his defence, he's stressed and like 15-17 years old. All things considered, he could be far worse.
Somehow, with his back ripped open and cursed, with his dragon crashing through the crystal ceiling which is raining on top of him, Eragon is able to not only remember to stab Durza in the heart (requiring turning around), but also shout an unnecessary spell.
Eragon probably could do magic before he bonded with Saphira. His mum wasn't a rider and had the "genes" for it, and his dad was a rider. It wouldn't be as strong, but maybe he's such a powerful spellcaster because he had some sort of baseline.
I bet that the first time Eragon wandered into the Spine, he was pretty young, and everyone kinda assumed him dead. He came out a week later with a bunch of rabbits or something
The fact that the Blood Oath Celebration made Eragon very pale implies that he's naturally the whitest boy ever and he just had a constant tan going (likely, because he's a farmer). This is just very funny to me, that in removing all injuries it took his tan.
Another point for absurdly powerful Eragon - the fact that his accidental curse had such an impact on Elva, to the point that it straight up affected her development. It wasn't even a spell! Or intentional!
I'm sorry, but Eragon casting empathy and that unintentionally killing the bad guy is so funny. He was SURRENDERING, but cut a bitch so deep that he imploded himself. Iconic.
Literally he is just so nice. Willing to run across the world, separated from Saphira, to support Orik in his campaign - when he totally could have given an excuse, or even just say the truth, which is that he's very much needed where he is. There's so many more examples, but he's just a good person.
I'm sorry, but Oramis was kinda a bitch for assigning the one hour of duelling in his training. Like, it flares up his seizures like crazy (which he ALSO SUFFERS FROM), AND he doesn't stand a chance against the elves in strength. I understand the point, but something had to give there. At the very least, reassign someone that won't actively torture him??
Adding onto that, we know that he's only able to succeed at the listening to the forest task after the transformation. I suspect that the mind is a sort of "sixth sense", and we know that elves have stronger senses; it's possible Eragon would have to have been bonded for a decent while for this to even be possible. I bet anything that human riders were usually trained by elder humans, and Oramis was struggling with a fledgeling human instead of an elf, as well as the time constraint.
Why the hell does Brom look so old? Yeah, he's old, but Galbatorix doesn't look that old? Is it something to do with his dragon being dead? The way I assumed it would be is that riders look like thirty for a verrrryyyy long time, no? Is it because Saphira died? Was he just going to perpetually age? Or does the beard age him?
Your cousin who feels like a brother goes missing, ran away, after your father's death. Soon you're leading everyone you've ever known to the rebellion in a desperate attempt to keep them safe and save the woman you love. Your cousin is wanted, even more than you are. He returns. He's different. Barely human anymore, hardly the boy you once knew. He's their last, and only hope. His war cry has been the same since he was six.
Now that I think about it, Garrow really is the odd one out in the family. His sister was the Black Hand, a highly dangerous assassin and magician. His son is Stronghammer, one of the deadliest soldiers in the country. His nephews are Eragon and Murtagh, both highly skilled swordsmen and magicians, riders, and both known as Kingkiller. Garrow is a farmer who can read.
Selena naming her son Eragon is soooo funny. "His dad - who is a secret! - is a rider, and Eragon was the first rider. It's so uncommon a name even among the elves that literally nobody will know this. My abusive husband and the evil king both know I hail from this place. He totally won't stick out in any way whatsoever!" Iconic, 10/10. It worked???
If any of these are inaccurate please remember I am going off my very deep-seated knowledge from reading the books so many times at a formative age. I haven't actually read them in years

Murtagh Fanart!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Traitor. Exile. Hunter. Hero and without a doubt our favorite emo boy!! Ladies and Gentlemen: MURTAGH!! For my Murtagh fanart I tried to make him following the descriptions in the book as much as possible and also a Han Solo vibe, since many say that Eragon is like Star Wars but with dragons, so if Eragon is kind of like Luke then Murtagh must certainly be his Han Solo. Oh and here are the visual references and credits to the artists who inspired me for this fanart version of Murtagh : @solarisetlesetoiles @chuwenjie

Thinking about Murtagh and Eragon talking about Eragon being a dragon rider. Murtagh hints at his jealousy, things progressively escalate to the point of Eragon saying that he really doesn’t like the position of leadership he’s in. He doesn’t like being away from his loved ones. Given how him being chosen by the Eldunarya destroyed parts of his family and his hometown and threw him into a war with so much death, especially of people he respected, he would have liked to live without that. Saphira’s existence and their bond is one of his only comforts. That and the fact that he’s helping to bring the dragons back.
Murtagh is surprised by this. He realizes that his assessment of Eragon was mostly false. Eragon isn’t a proud gloating leader. He’s a humble (young) man who carries an undesired role on his shoulders because no one else was there to take it from him. He later realizes that Eragon is a nurturer. He nurtures relationships, nurtures the land, gives a safe place for those whose lives have been upended by fate. He wonders… what is his own role.
He later apologizes to Eragon for his false assumptions. Eragon accepts his apology.

Eragon explaining his species like—
Eragon: Legally, I’m a dwarf-
Eragon: By birth, I’m a human-
Eragon: By magic tree dragon magic celebration night, I’m an elf mutt
Eragon: ✨Magic✨
And then literally all three races have rejected him in some way at some point

Shade Slayers - Firlaong
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dragons were buzzing - a silent nervous energy swept over everyone in the camp, as the newbies hid into the shadows and corners, curious eyes trying to catch a glimpse of the rumored Warden. The veterans understood better - they still moved to the side, still gave way, still bowed their heads as the hulking mass that seemed to breathe frozen wind itself walked past.
Firlaong had come to the Shade Slayers once more, a silent and old Gaoler with grizzled look. Weathered by the years of service, of unpleasant work had left him intolerant for foolishness, and many were aware of it, avoiding being on his way, avoiding making sounds near him as to avoid getting the silencing glare of the old warrior.
Only one who seemed to approach him without a fear was the Wildclaw leader, Vanitas, who had a grim look on his face as Firlaong finally entered his tent.
"Good evening old friend," the leader greeted, lowering his head briefly before tossing a bag on the table.
Firlaong merely nodded in return, picking the bag and counting the contents. He stopped half-way however, eyes furrowing, as one of his long claws hovered over the shards inside the dark leather bag. "... There is at least twice as many as the last time. Have you kept your hunters running double shift?"
Vanitas barked a laugh - bitter and brief, sound that signaled bad news.
"Oh how I wish! No, these are from standard missions," the commander explained, waving his hand a little before starting to dig into his pockets for a flask. "These Shade Shards are more troublesome than the weeds back at Seedscar, with how fast they're popping around."
Firlaong stood quiet, before continuing his counting - tossing then another bag on the table, this one making a happy jingle, though it did nothing to cheer up the atmosphere.
"I will spread the word then. You need more dragons."
"Thanks old man," Vanitas let out a quiet snort, taking a swig of his flask. "I am going to need all the help I can, we just lost Ember to this."
Firlaong nodded, before reaching an arm, and patting Vanitas on the shoulder. "Then be well, my old friend. Do not let the Shade consume you."
Nothing more needed to be said, aside from a solemn nod from the tired Wildclaw, who returned back to his mapping...
We have a MASSIVE update! Well not massive, but exciting for me non the less! We finally have Firlaong the Gaoler! I had his scry finished for AGES, and the dragon in my lair for a bit - so you can bet the second Winds got the dom I went on ham buying genes and what not to finish him fully up :3
He still needs human art and proper bio, but I am glad to have the dragon in my lair finally.
We also got a small glimpse on Vanitas, and the main story-beats! I hope ya lot are enjoying these mini-stories of the Shade Slayers story, they're blast to write. Will write up current mini-updates in separate post in a second!

now i'm thinking about the banishing of the names and its making me genuinely crazy
just like imagine the creature that is literally bound to your soul, the one in the world that you are the closest too, someone you have spent your whole life with, sharing thoughts with sharing joy and jokes with. the creature that knows you better than anyone else, better than yourself, the creature that chose you, and stuck by you at your worst and your best.
imagine watching them lose themself completely, lose their name, their identity, their whole self, they're reduced to a wild animal. it's a fate worse than death and all you can do is watch, there's nothing in all your years of magic that can help you now.
your dragon isn't even dead, it's still alive it's standing right in front of you but it's wrong, the look in its eyes is blank, not the intelligent gaze you've come to expect, it's mannerisms have even changed, it holds itself differently too. it's all wrong.
and your struck with the realization that you'll never get your dragon back, even if you survive this they will never be the same, you will never fly above the clouds with them your consciousness melding together, you will never lay under their wings and be known truely, and when you try to call out their name you can't.
every memory you have of them is changed now too, a blank space in your mind and-you realize-your soul itself. maybe you let out an anguished scream but it's not right, you want to be able to call its name, to see even a flicker of recognition in its eyes.
there's nothing though, even as you scream and cry the creature shows no signs of empathy or understanding. it tears you apart, any semblance of sanity you still had is gone.
and like man i would go insane too
anyways i wrote this bc i read a good fic that inspired me so go read that i just reblogged it

Here is the art of our queen of the skies! This was the first time I drew a dragon, even though I don't have much experience I thought the final result was cool, maybe with time in other arts I'll add more details to Saphira's design, but now I'll move on to the sketch of our favorite old man Brom.
Oh and here are the visual references and credits to the artists who inspired me for this fanart version of Saphira: @applejuucee @ticcytx
