“Shared Humanity”

No person or system or country is perfect, far from it. In order to grow and evolve and improve we must recognize our past, in all its glory, but also in the shadow of its failures. We must be aware of our strengths, and our weaknesses. I do not believe in solely focusing on praise, unnaturally so, to the point of omitting the true history of our lives as people, as a community, as a nation, as a global entity. I also do not believe in the short-sightedness of only heaping criticism on a subject without recognizing constructive ideas to chart the path forward, to create real and lasting change. I do believe in the power of transformation, the power and the right to protest, and the ongoing fight for justice.

No Movement, No Nation, No Doctrine, No Philosophy is an island unto itself, paraphrasing John Donne. To further expound his quotation:

“No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”

Essentially, we’re all in this together. Whether we sink and we perish, or we swim to shore and we thrive, we cannot do it alone. We can choose to accept this inexorable truth or we can deny ourselves of our shared humanity. To quote Maya Angelou, an American poet, memoirist and civil rights activist:

"Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better."
