hello hi!!! squid person!!!
what are your top pics for the cephalopods that are most interesting to you?
have a good day! :))
Ooh so many cephalopods are interesting but here are some great ones
Grimalditeuthis is a deep sea squid that has a modified tentacle club (the club's the bit at the end with the suction cups) that INSTEAD of looking like a normal suction cup looks like a mini-squid. And then it makes that little mini-squid look like it's swimming to attract prey then when they go to eat the little squid, BAM they're grimalditeuthis's lunch. We love that! Here's a video
youtube
2. Reef squid, sometimes called Oval Squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) They're gorgeous, they talk to each other by changing color, they flip upside down to fuck. We love it! Here's a vid of those upside-down-fucks
youtube
3 Strawberry squid They have two eyes that look very different from each other. One is HUGE and is looking up for the very very faint difference between light coming down from above and the silhouettes of animals swimming above. There's not much light where they live, so they gotta maximize the amount they can take in from their environment. The other one (the small one) looks nearby for bioluminescence
Tumblr media
Taningia are BIG. Large. 7.5 feet-ish. and bioluminescent, which is a different color from most squid. They have one of the biggest photophores in the animal kingdom! This image is from Schmidt Ocean!
Tumblr media
Then there are weirdos like Sharpear Enope Squid, who strike the most fantastic poses. Steven Kovacs takes gorgeous pics of midwater squid at night it's unreal.

Alrighty. More tpom ocs! This time we gotta villain >:3
(HUGE shout-out to @art-tea-chill for helping me come up with alot of cephlalas character, from design to even her name! I don't think I would've been able to come up with nearly as much of a character if it wasn't for her, so ty!)
Tumblr media
Cephalala:
-Species: Sharpear Enope Squid
- A Primadonna, She's popular with the little girls who come to the central park zoo due to her beauty, but this doesn't satisfy her enough. She has everything but one thing, a talented singing voice, something Peniru has, and something that Cephalala has extreme envy and hatred for.
- Luckily for Cephalala, Dr. Blowhole created an invention for Cephalala which would suck out all the singing talent from Penirus voice using the seashell attached to the middle of her cape. it activates when she clicks the button, and that's able to instantly suck away all of her vocal cords, almost like magic.
- She tries to keep her facial expresses as stilted as possible so she doesn't "Get wrinkles and become ugly and old as quick as light", but she can't control her facial expressions when she's REALLY angry.
- Engaged to Dave
- She lives in a cavern similar to Ursulas cave, where she brews ideas and potions in her cauldron before dave has to revise them for her because of hers plans many flaws
- She can cloak into dark places with her cape, making it easier for her to spy on the penguins and Peniru
- Gets unbelievably upset when Skipper misspells her name
- Her least favorite member of the team is private, she's tried many times to kidnap him.
- Dave built her a tool that would allow her to disguise herself as a human like he does, so she can use Penirus stolen talent to become a Superstar singer to the unsuspecting humans on land, as another way to become the center of everyones attention, essentially becoming a fake-celebrity
- She will absolutely scream in horror if anything that she considers "Not Glamorous" gets onto her "Marvelous, Flawless Self",
- Her eyes and cape glow in the dark
- Voice Actor: Christa Miller (Basically, just listen to cleos voice from season 1 of clone high.)
- (Stolen) Singing Voice: LeAnn Rimes
Tumblr media
Jathino:
- Jathino is a violet sea snail who acts as Dave and Cephalalas honestly just tired and exhausted Meowth, he was stolen from his natural habitat by Cephalala and kept for his, in her own words, "Natural Beauty". Jathino tries to give his advice and opinion on things that Cephalala does, but is usually cut off by Dave. He's usually dragged into the duos schemes, and while occasionally it's fun for him, sometimes he wishes he could just live with the penguins instead of having to deal with their antics, he's fond of daydreaming and occasionally daydreams about being a penguin on their team, it's basically his wish at this point, but as far as he's concerned he's stuck with cephalala and dave forever
Voice Actor: Joseph Pelling

A question that has been lodged in my brain like a porcupine quill since the dawn of time... how would transitioning work for transgender inklings & octolings? Do you think that the ability to dramatically change their voice & their bipedal form's appearance with the player customization menu is something they can actually do at will, or are such changes more involved, like they are for humans? And would medication analogous to human HRT be a part of transitioning for any of them? I have tried to research that one myself, but for some reason there's very little information out there about how a cephalopod might medically transition.
The reason why is because we don't know a whole lot about hormones and secondary sex characteristics in cephalopods. We don't even know if they have chromosome-based sex differentiation! We do know that octopuses at least seem to have the same sex hormones as in humans (i.e. testosterone, estrogen, progesterone) but we don't know if they have any effect on secondary sex characteristics. I found a paper that reviewed mollusk sex hormone studies and concluded that there's no evidence they have much of an external effect at all.
So what ways to medically transition would there be for an Inkling or Octoling? I don't think that they can dramatically change the appearance of the humanoid form at will - the system that I have for their shapeshifting is more or less a fast-acting, two-way metamorphosis, a shift between two forms that themselves do not change. We don't have strong evidence for hormonal control over how the body looks, so it's unknown how effective HRT would be. There's always surgery, and I think puberty blockers would also work, but I've been tossing about a headcanon for how Inklings/Octolings would medically transition based on something we do know about cephalopod biology.
You know how cephalopods use RNA editing to modify how their genes are expressed?
So the idea is: doctors have developed molecular cocktails that we can call, for the sake of the bad pun, Gender Fluids. Inject some of that into your body, and your blood and ink will distribute it all across your body. It induces a RNA modification pathway that changes how certain genes are expressed, with the end result being feminization/masuclinization of the secondary sex characteristics. So it's a bit like both HRT and gene therapy. It's fast-acting - the modification begins as soon as you transform to swim form and back - but you need to keep up the injections if you want it to hold.
(on an unrelated note, while doing research I learned out something neat. Apparently a sizable contingent of individuals of the sharpear enope squid (Ancistrocheirus lesueurii) are intersex. They have fully-developed male reproductive systems, but are also larger and bear nidamental glands like females)

See-through squid
"Wildlife photographer Steven Kovacs snapped this sharpear enope squid (Ancistrocheirus lesueurii) while diving off Kona in Hawaii. This medium-sized squid is the only species in its genus and family. The luminous spots on its body and tentacles are produced by light-emitting organs called photophores"

Cassanova revealll
Name: Cass 'cassanova' Khan
species: sharpear enope squid
Mains: Splash o matic, hydra splatling, tristringer, and heavy edit splatling /splatlings
occupation: Delivery girl (she still cant land a lasting job)
short bio: Since a very young age the sharpear squid realized quickly... she had terrible strokes of luck. From excelling in school just to be forced to move into the big city where education means nothing compared to inksports, to her natural magnitism to minor accidents.. Cass cant ever seem to catch a break. The worst came when she found a stray small fry when scavenging in the splatlands.. the small fry she hence named Lucky lead the poor girl into a set of craters... the rest was history...
