Review: The Aquatope on White Sand

I wanted to watch this series so bad that I mistakenly started watching it before it was totally out! You would have no way to know this, but I despise not being able to just binge the whole anime. Having to wait a week for each of the last 5 episodes was my true #firstworldproblem. Regardless, I really cared for the series. 

Starting it, I was instantly struck by how familiar it felt. It’s as if I had always been watching this anime. All the characters personalities are so powerful, they shine through as if they were your childhood friends. That isn’t to say they are tropey either. They just have life and so many small details that just makes you know them from being on screen. The writers knew what they were doing. I have to say, up until the moment Kukuru asked Fuka to be her big sister, I was really shipping them. I mean what straight explanation is there for this: 

That being said, I don’t know, but the shipping wore off for me. As someone who myself has a best friend who I asked to be my older sister even though I was older than her, I just really relate to Kukuru and her relationship with Fuka. Now I don’t know if @it-was-probably-me would come and get me if I ran away from work because I failed a big project I was working on, but I can certainly dream she would. I believe in a concept that I’ve poorly named ‘soul-friends.’ I have a few of them in my life and they are people who complete me in a platonic way and it’s a love I cherish more than anything. 

I just can’t gush about how wonderful these characters are. Even when I was blindsided by the time skip (I’m having A Lull in the Sea flashbacks), I didn’t feel like the growing cast was just thrown in to test the dynamics of the already established characters. Instead it rounds them out in a way that feels like real life. These are all living and breathing people outside of the narrative of the story. When gramps in the last episode said that there were time he hated working his dream job and that you have to work really hard for just a few really good moments, that hit me so hard I almost cried. It’s just such an authentic show.

I’m not sure if these would be to your tastes or not, but some of my favourites this season are Vanitas no Carte, Shiroi Suna no Aquatrope, Uramichi Oniisan (this one’s really relatable at times) and Kageki Shoujo!

Everyone keeps talking about Vanitas, and I might be more interested except that someone tried to sell it to me based on the fact that it's by the author of Pandora Hearts, except I saw some of that, and I hated Pandora Hearts. That was years ago, but ughhh the frustration is still vivid.

So I don't really know what to do with that.

Shiroi Suna no Aquatope looks...like something I might watch with a friend sometime but not something I would be super invested in watching on my own just for the story. We shall see.

Uramichi Oniisan is another one everyone has been talking about. Maybe I will get around to it. I don't actually know what it's about at all.

Kageki Shoujo looks like something I would either love or hate.
