Mrityunjay: Durykarna (1)
bro B r o BRO I'm halfway through Mrityunjay, right now on Duryodhan's POV and I SHIT YOU NOT his description of Karna is straight (hah) out of a fucking romance novel.
I MEAN THIS SHIT;?!!!?! Fucking G O L D
Tumblr media
(The following translation sucks but trust me when I say that this gay loser describes Karna in the most flowery way POSSIBLE)
He (Karna) has a way of making all those who were close to him, his own in every way. With his many attractive qualities, he has won over the vast majority of citizens in this capital city. But his most powerful and mesmerizing trait is his enviable personality (in this context; his physical appearance). Whenever he stands in front of me, I don't know why but it feels like there are countless particles of radiance fluttering right in front of me. Every time I look into his blue eyes, the blue vastness of the sky pales in comparison.
Sometimes, I would run into him on the royal staircase of the palace as he was returning from a bath (in river Ganga). I will never be able to forget the way he looked then. The way the residue of the clear droplets of Gangetic water shines brilliantly in his wet, curly golden hair, it reminds me of dewy sunflowers in the garden that dance to the tune of the wind.
His gentle swaying earrings, his magnificently smooth forehead, his nose as straight as a flagpole, the colour of reddish-pink lotuses flushed across his cheeks, arched golden eyebrows racing towards his ears, biceps as large as an elephant’s trunk, the carved, glowing muscles of his calves, his broad and elevated chest could be likened to the huge back of one of the mega turtles of Ganga, his neck round and thick like an arrowhead, his shoulders were strong and chiseled, not unlike a bull’s and all of these features were beautifully enhanced with his sunlike round face!
In my opinion, there was no other man that could rival Karna’s distinguished beauty (and caliber) in the entirety of Hastinapur. He’s reserved and talks very little. But his silence is a living commentary! Whenever he speaks, the sound resembles the clear gong of a mace smashing against another, grainy and deep.
Tumblr media
In the terms of voice and the style of speaking, Karna is only second to the Grandsire (Bhishma), who is my favourite.
Sometimes while talking, he would break into a breath-taking smile and his teeth would cast a golden glow and I...
and I forget Guru Drona’s hurtful neglect towards me, forget the insults hurled at me by Bhima-Arjun, hundreds of wounds that scrap the deepest corners of my heart are long forgotten. I forget that I’m the crown prince of the Kurus, forget that tomorrow I’m going to be the emperor of Hastinapur. And like the endless buzzing of a bee, only one thought starts spiraling in my head--
“Is Karna really a Suta (the son of a Suta)? In the modest hut of a charioteer, could a man bearing such an ethereal form be born? Is Karna really inferior?”
Then my soul tells me quite defiantly, “Karna is not a charioteer’s son! He is the epitome of brilliance! How can a glowing jewel (*paraphrased) be born in a cave of darkness? Karna must be some celebrated king’s bright and courageous son. Karna must be a Kshatriya!”

june so far has been filled with intense reads on tragic events, sprawling timelines, vibrant cities, once-sacred rivers, delicate familial relationships, internal conflicts, and formidable women: compelling, wronged, forgotten.
the days have been overwhelmingly long with daunting tasks, nostalgic overloads and dubious weather.
i ate enough mangoes to do justice to my username; gave up on planning tbrs; fell in love with a flower bowl; rediscovered in my shelf, an old portable cd/dvd player - a bunch of disks with it; displayed exemplary self control in a ceramics store; rewatched bojack horseman a fifth time; listened to a playlist i made back in 2014; remembered that bts just completed 10 years and felt aged.

Vicky Kaushal's Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj appearance in Chhaava came to life after a year of research, and the team made a copy of the warrior's sword: Report
The biography Chhaava, based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and starring Vicky Kaushal, exemplifies the rigorous research and attention to detail that can improve a historical drama. Director Laxman Utekar, motivated by a desire for realistic depiction, embarked on a year-long journey to immerse himself and his team in the culture of the 17th-century Maratha monarch.
Tumblr media
According to a story in Mid-day, essential to this endeavor was a thorough examination of Maharashtra's ancient towns and cities. Utekar and costume designer Sheetal Sharma traveled to Aurangabad, Ratnagiri, Pune, Nashik, Paithan, and beyond to study the cultural subtleties and visual aesthetics of the time. Their search for authenticity extended beyond books and intellectual materials, as they sought firsthand accounts from the sites where history transpired. A insider explained, "Some directors enjoy using whites and pastels that are far distant from the environment they are presenting, but Laxman wanted to be authentic in his storytelling. When the crew began their investigation by visiting Maratha communities, they discovered that Indians prefer bright colors over pastels. Laxman and Sheetal visited various forts and museums in these cities and towns, which provided additional insight into the clothing and culture of the time. They also met historians who had studied the time period.
Rashmika Mandanna, who plays Sambhaji's wife Yesubai, wears exquisite Paithani sarees sourced from local artisans. The team also bought and refurbished antique sarees with 500-year-old borders to make the clothes as genuine as possible. "For Rashmika's look, the costume design crew traveled to Paithan and Narayanpeth to source authentic Paithani and Narayanpeth sarees. Given that many materials from that era were no longer available, they explored museums and photographed the fabrics and textiles, which were subsequently reproduced by weavers. Some antique sarees, including a handful with borders dating back 500 years, were also purchased and restored. Rashmika has worn various Paithani sarees with Chandrakala motifs," the source stated.
The team's attention to detail extended to all aspects of the production. Vicky Kaushal, the starring man, was deliberately constructed to seem like Sambhaji Maharaj as portrayed in history. By researching sculptures and busts from numerous sites, the crew was able to capture the king's unique looks and behaviors. The iconic throne scene in the film's teaser was inspired by a historical bust from Pune, while the characters' accessories came from local marketplaces and museums. The costume design team painstakingly studied and replicated the exquisite jewelry and adornments of the time, ensuring that every detail was historically correct. The final image of Chhaava's teaser, of Vicky sitting on the throne, is based on a bust in Pune. The accessories were purchased from Kolhapur, Sawantwadi, and Ratnagiri. The jewellery and accessories ought to exude an old-world charm. Rashmika wore the Lakshmi haar with a nath, a look inspired by museum photographs and antiques. According to the source, production designers Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray replicated Sambhaji's sword Bhavani from a London museum.
Akshaye Khanna stars as Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Chhaava, which is based on Shivaji Sawant's Marathi novel. Divya Dutta plays Vicky Kaushal's stepmother Soyarabai. The film is slated to be released in December 2024.

We're reading मृत्युंजय [mṛtyuṅjay] by Shivaji Sawant!
कर्ण 1.6
झणत्कार [zhaṇatkār] - jangling, ringing
प्रत्यंचा [pratyaṅcā] - bow-string
झुबकेदार [zhubkedār] - tasselled
गोडा [goṅḍā] - tuft
पिटाळणे [piṭāḷṇe] - to shoo, to get rid of
पेलणे [pelṇe] - to balance, to manage
खंड्या [khaṅḍyā] - white-breasted kingfisher
वेध [vedh] - puncturing, piercing, hitting a mark
नित्य [nitya] - constant, regular, unbroken
आम्रफल [āmrafal] - mango
देठ [deṭh] - stalk
साळिंद्र [sāḷindra] - porcupine
नलिका [nalikā] - tube, tubular organ (quill in this context)
Words I did not get:
धनुकली [dhanuklī] - This likely means the 'frame' of the bow based on the context, because its dictionary meanings of 'cotton-cleaner's bow' and 'pellet-bow' don't fit here.
Notes and summary:
Karna's father routinely brings bows home, and Karna is fascinated by the weapon. He takes up a bow and with Shon, starts playing with it. Karna proves to be a talented archer, and over time, he keeps playing with the bow under his father's supervision.
He expresses a desire to be an archer so skilled that he can let loose endless arrows at a time, like a porcupine shooting its quills.

also Amba, Subhadra and Sahdev. :D
Amba: Are you vengeful?
To be honest, I am not at all vengeful. I feel I am wasting my time and energy by indulging in vengeance. I rather prefer to move on with whatever bad has happened to me. Life is too short to work on that, I better do something fruitful. Bad experiences teach us a lot of things so why spend energy on wanting to punish someone or wish the same for the person or anybody who did us bad?
Subhadra: Do you have a pet?
I am a person who will binge watch cat and dog videos but you bring me close to them and I shall run away. So no, I don't own one.
Sahdev: Your favourite book
Sadly, I am not a person who can select only one favourite. I have three fav books which are-
1. Yajnaseni by Pratibha Ray (I found this much better than Palace of Illusions. Also I think you must be knowing about it. The author is Odia)
2. Yugandhar by Shivaji Sawant: The book was originally in Marathi but was later translated to English. It is about Krishna narrating the story from his pov and the pov then shifts to Rukmini and more characters. If you get this book, READ it.
3. Lotus born: The Ballad of Satyabhama by SriLakshmi Kochiyil: As the name suggests, it is about Satyabhama, the third wife of Krishna. The entire book is written in a beautiful poetic style. And Satyabhama is my favourite so this book too.

Best historical novels for all time in Marathi
History is best topic to read and to understand also. Benefits of reading of reading such type of books is we can improve our behavior from mistakes that can harmful to us. Also, it helps to understand why the present rules or world are like this? (history tell us the reasons behind that) with that it gives the chance to understand our real hero’s and legends, sacrifices done for peace.
So, Here are the 5 historical books suggestion that can help you to improve yourself.
Mrutyunjaya by Shivaji Sawant
Tumblr media
Mrutyunjaya is the autobiography of Karna, and yet it is not just that. With deceptive case, Sawant brings into play an exceptional stylistic innovation by combining six "dramatic soliloquies" to form the nine books of this novel of epic dimensions. Four books are spoken by Karna. These are interspersed with a book each from the lips of his unwed mother Kunti, Duryodhana (who considers Karna his mainstay), Shon (Shatruntapa, his foster-brother, who here-worships him), his wife Vrishali to whom he is like a god and, last of all, Krishna. Sawant depicts an uncanny similarity between Krishna and Karna and hints at a mystic link between them, investing his protagonist with a more than-human aura to offset the un-heroic and even unmanly acts which mar this tremendously complex and utterly fascinating creating of Vyasa.
Shriman yogi by Ranjit desai
Tumblr media
This is a biographical novel on Shivaji Maharaj. This historical novel has created history in the world of literature and books. Shivaji Maharaj is the most worshipped person in Maharashtra. Every single household here knows Shivaji Maharaj. He is the most respected character. He was a dream come true. Shivaji Maharaj was born as a Hindu but at such time when Hinduism was forgotten by the Hindus. In his novel Ranjit Desai pictures Shivaji from his birth rather he starts with the days prior to his birth. Before writing this novel Desai has searched history, he has not left any stone unturned while doing so. Writing on Shivaji Maharaj was a very difficult task. Shivaji Maharaj had many qualities and the last 34 centuries have changed people`s view about him. They have become more possessive about him adding unnecessarily, and untruthfully to his qualities considering him a god. On this background it was very difficult to portray Shivaji Maharaj as perfect as possible Desai had realised his responsibility. He has pictured Shivaji Maharaj meticulously in this novel. Religious but not superstitious, strict but not wicked, adventurous but not impetuous, practical but not aimless, realistic, visionary but not dreamy. Graceful but not prodigal. Desai has succeeded in highlighting Shivaji Maharaj human nature. His base was that of a human. He valued all, respected every religion. He was an expert commander. He awakened the love for motherland in the sleeping mind, of people. He ignited their confidence. While describing this, Desai has brought many of Shivaji Maharaj qualities into limelight. Shivaji Maharaj was a noble king but he was a nobleman. He also had his own sufferings. He lost many, but his first preference was his motherland. As we go on reading, we get involved in the book so much that we live each moment and when Desai ends the novel, we feel that “WE” have lost Shivaji Maharaj.
Shaymchi aai by sane guruji
Tumblr media
Shyamchi Aai (Marathi: श्यामच आई; English: Shyam's Mother) is hailed as one of the greatest tributes to mother's love in Marathi literature. It was written by famous author and social activist Sane Guruji. this book is representing the love between mother and her child.
Shyamchi Aai is an autobiography of Sane Guruji belonging to a Brahmin family in Konkan region of rural Maharashtra during British Raj. Sane Guruji, fondly called Shyam during his childhood, is narrating his memories to a group of children in a nightly sitting.
Chapters in the book are named ratra meaning "night" in Marathi. They are named first night, second night and so on. Every passing 5, the story takes you into the family setting in rural Konkan and its beautiful seaside landscapes with adjoining ranges of Sahyadri.
As the title suggests the central character is Shyam's mother and the kind of enormous influence she has on Shyam's life and upbringing. It involves sticking to one's ideals even though one is neck deep in abject poverty.
The narration is flamboyant and involves readers in the setting smoothly. As the story progresses, we come to know the deterioration of Shyam's debt-ridden family. The communication between father and son, mother and son, and siblings is exemplary. It shows that if love is present in a person's life, the person can be content; no matter how poor he is.
The book starts with Shyam's mother getting married into a wealthy family, its slow progression into debt-ridden poverty, and ends with illness and death of his mother.
Pavankhind by Ranjit desai
Tumblr media
Maharashtra, the state in Western India, had been under the rule of the Muslims since the thirteenth century. For about four hundred years it had tyrannical and intolerant kings from outside who never allowed the local population to live in peace. Loot, exploitation in the name of religion, rape and violence were rampant until Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj challenged the rulers and set up a Maratha empire in the seventeenth century. His mission was not a cakewalk: he had enemies from within, outside the state as well as those from other countries (the Portuguese and the British had made their present felt by then.) Loyalty of his followers was one major factor that helped Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj build an empire which was held in awe. Pavankhind is a historical novel that covers the events leading to the War of Pavankhind. (Pavankhind is a pass near Kolhapur.) The king successfully made his way through a siege of the pass; thanks to Baji Prabhu Deshpande who made the break through possible. Ranjit Desai (1928-1992) tackled the genre of novels with such ease that his collection includes all types of novels: historical, social, mythological, and biographical. He was also a playwright and has to his credit short stories.
Panipat by vishwas patil
The third battle of Panipat was fought over the throne of Delhi between the Marathas and the king of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Abdali. While the face-off had stretched for months, the actual conflict took place on 14 January 1761. And within a span of twelve hours, 150,000 soldiers lost their lives. About 80,000 horses, bullocks and elephants were slaughtered too. And even though the Marathas fought like absolute heroes, the battle ended up bringing their empire to its knees, emptying out its coffers and decimating an entire generation of youth.  Panipat has received thirty-eight awards since its release in 1988, and sold more than 200,000 copies. Published in English for the first time, this translation is going to be an absolute treat for connoisseurs of historical fiction.

Notes and summary:
Good gosh, I only read 5 pages and I already have a massive vocab list out of it. Madness. This novel isn't holding back at all.
In this opening chapter, the narrator Karṇa declares that he wishes to speak of his life posthumously. He describes the events of his life as arrows of a quiver that he wishes to unleash upon the world, and declares that he would have his arrows tested by the fatherhood, motherhood, brotherhood, mentorship, and friendship of this world.
Karna describes his life as decorated royal vestment turned into torn rags by the ravages of circumstances. Further, he warns the listener that his story has no goblets of sweetness or hypnotic dances, but only conflict.
He is confounded by how to begin when so many memories appear before him, but his thoughts come to the town of Champa on the banks of the Ganga. He is very fond of the town, describing it as his (presumably mental) refuge.

Kindergarten School for Girls in Mumbai
13 Apr 2021
Kindergarten School for Girls
Architects: JDAP
Location: Mumbai, India
The Kindergarten School for Girls in suburban Mumbai needed an expanded space for the children in their kindergarten section. The administration owned a plot of land adjacent to the main school, however this was taken up by a residential building that they occupied.
When structural drawings of the building revealed that it could take on an additional floor, it was decided to extend the existing structure, rather than take down the entire building and construct anew. Regulation demanded that an additional staircase was necessary to accommodate this public function.
A delicate steel staircase was inserted within the court formed by the C-shaped building, and that became the primary path of entry to the school. The stair is finely detailed to have a sense of play and lightness, while also ensuring the safety of children moving back and forth.
The three columns supporting the flights and the connecting bridge, branch out to hold a lightweight, translucent roof. The stair is painted a bright mango-yellow and stands as a joyful marker of the school, for children and passersby. Coloured lines in china-mosaic within the landscape squiggle their way, leading children between the school and the gate of the premises.
The column configuration continuing from the lower floor tended to form a rigid and highly restrictive corridor space, that would not serve a school well. By modifying the connecting beam layout, the corridor was transformed into a dynamic, active space – open to light and connecting to the ‘trees’ of the staircase area. The space now serves as an extended teaching area and opens up at both ends to staff areas that are kept open and accessible to children.
It was clear that the expanded function needed to express itself from the exterior, atop the residential building. A low-slung tie beam at the periphery gives it a soft and sinuous profile that takes cues from the building below, yet retains its own autonomy. This also allows the building to have an insulating envelope and protection to the openings from Mumbai’s fierce monsoon.
Storage nooks formed on the inside due to this skin are clad in glazed ceramic tiles of varying colours that lend a distinct identity to the classrooms. A material palette comprising natural stone, timber and painted walls forms a robust and comforting setting to the school, awaiting the relaxation of pandemic restrictions, for children to take over.

Summary
Early next morning, Karna sets out to bathe in the Ganga. The streets of Hastinapur are empty, which he enjoys. He bathes in the Ganga for a while, and then, as he is preparing to leave, he contemplates and admires the sun once more.
As he is worshipping the sun in his personal way, Karna is interrupted by an old man, who introduces himself as Bhīṣma, the patriarch of the Kuru dynasty. Karna is overwhelmed to learn this.
Bhīṣma tells Karna that in the decades he's spent coming to the Ganga ghat, he has never seen a single resident of Hastinapur be there before him. He is impressed with Karna's devotion, as well as Karna's earrings.
On the way back, Karna reflects on the humility shown by Bhīṣma and is impressed by the patriarch. He adds Bhīṣma to his list of people he loves the most, which presently includes his family members.

🌼BOOK REVIEW 🌼 ❇️सूतो वा सूतपुत्रो वा यो वा को वा भवाम्यहम्। दैवायत्तं कुले जन्म मदायत्तं तु पौरुषम्॥❇️ Mrutunjay is a classic fiction by Marathi Literature writer Mr. Shivaji Sawant. This phenomenal creation is a winner of many and some of the top awards in indian literature. it s winner if Dnyanpith Award 1995. It's a classic fiction focusing the "Karna" from the popular Indian religious fiction "Mahabharata".Karna is a one of the character from Mahabharata who was always been portrayed as a negative character but here in this book author has given justice to this generous charactor. The book delivers different perspectives about Karna. The book describes Karna as an epic example of generouseness, friendship, commitment, versatility and what not. I would say Karn was just perfect in all aspects and I started admiring the character. While reading, many of the times I felt how unfair the whole destiny can be with Karna. This could be a fight for right but not at all beneficial for Karna yet he has been dragged the whole time between Pandawa's and Kaurava's. He had to lost his loved ones more than any of the parties battling for their own pride and benefits. Karn was a gentleman whose complete advantage has been taken by the people for their own good. Karna is well-known for his generous nature, commitments and friendship. He was an almighty but unfortunate soul. This is nothing but an amazing piece of art by Shivaji Sawant. No wonder the book is been popular since decades in Indian Literature. The uniqueness about the book is that its written from different characters views and not just in view of a single character. Mrutunjay is about karn yet whole mahabharata is been narrated without even dominating Karna's character. What a wonderful confluence!! Though the story of Mahabharata is well known, the narration of book is just mesmerizing. It is a complete page turner and absorbing book. Mrutunjay was a fascinating read with collection of emotions. It's a story of motherhood, brotherhood, friendship, love, betrayal, vengeance and pride. I would strongly recommend this book to all the readers with every age group. Its 5/5 🌟 for me. #mrutunjay (at Pune, Maharashtra) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFLplTigImq/?igshid=wu3txvf2kwrf
