Ethereum Just Quietly Solved One of Its Biggest Problems—and It’s Not About TPS
Ethereum didn’t launch a flashy new Layer 2. It didn’t roll out another zkVM or announce a billion-dollar fund. But this week, something far more fundamental happened—Ethereum quietly took a massive leap toward becoming the true backbone of a multichain internet.
The ERC-7828 and ERC-7930 proposals aren’t sexy. They don’t come with bull-market hype or token airdrops. But they do solve a usability nightmare that’s been plaguing Ethereum and its Layer 2 ecosystem for years: the chaos of cross-chain addresses.
If these proposals are finalized as planned next week, it will mark a rare moment in crypto—when something actually gets simpler.
The Multichain Mess No One Talks About
Today, Ethereum isn't a single chain. It’s a constellation of rollups, appchains, and sidechains—Optimism, Arbitrum, Base, zkSync, Linea, and more. They all inherit Ethereum’s security, but their user interfaces? Pure fragmentation.
Sending tokens between these chains is like navigating a minefield. Same address on multiple chains? Easy to get confused. Accidentally send ETH to your Arbitrum address on zkSync? You might never see it again. Wallets require constant network switching. DApps often can’t tell what chain you’re on. Block explorers disagree on what your address even is.
It’s a disjointed experience that undermines everything Ethereum stands for.
One Name to Rule Them All
Enter ERC-7828 and ERC-7930.
ERC-7930 is the machine layer. It defines a compact, binary format for interoperable addresses—something protocols and APIs can parse consistently. It’s the “backend” fix.
ERC-7828, meanwhile, is the human layer. It introduces a simple, readable address format like vitalik@optimism or readonly@base. Wallets can now know, and show, exactly which chain you're talking about—without requiring the user to fiddle with network settings.
To put it bluntly: these two standards could finally allow Ethereum users to send assets across chains without thinking about chains. That’s a user experience win so overdue, it’s almost embarrassing.
Why This Matters More Than TPS
Crypto debates are obsessed with throughput—transactions per second, finality time, block size, etc. But the truth is, throughput doesn’t matter if the UX is broken.
What we’ve lacked isn’t faster chains—it’s composable simplicity.
With these standards, Ethereum wallets and DApps can operate like Apple’s AirDrop. Type a name, hit send, and the system figures out the plumbing behind the scenes.
Remember, the iPhone didn’t win because of its specs—it won because it “just worked.” This is Ethereum’s shot at doing the same for multichain interaction.
The Hidden Genius: It's Not Just for People
While ERC-7828 cleans up the user interface, ERC-7930 opens up a new world for protocols and smart contracts.
With a standard binary format for address+chain combos, bots, bridges, and contracts can interoperate without needing bespoke code for every new rollup. It’s like assigning every chain a ZIP code—and making sure everyone uses it.
Think of how much developer time gets wasted today on bridge integrations, address validation hacks, or custom network resolvers. This fixes that.
Isn’t This Just Cosmetic?
At first glance, yes. Critics might argue this is just a naming convention—a UX band-aid over a deeper fragmentation problem.
But that’s short-sighted.
Standards are infrastructure. They’re what makes the internet work. Without TCP/IP, you’d have a hundred incompatible networks. Without DNS, you’d be typing IP addresses into your browser.
ERC-7828/7930 are Ethereum’s version of DNS + TCP/IP for the multichain world. They don't just make life easier for users; they unlock a smoother, interoperable base layer for apps, wallets, and infra teams. That’s leverage.
This Isn’t Just About Ethereum—It’s About Winning the War for the Interface
Let’s zoom out. Why does this matter?
Because the battle for crypto’s next 100 million users won’t be won on tech specs—it’ll be won on default experience.
Right now, centralized exchanges like Coinbase or Binance offer smoother, simpler interfaces. Want to send money from one chain to another? They handle it invisibly. DeFi can’t compete—yet.
But with ERC-7828 and ERC-7930, Ethereum is laying the groundwork for self-custodial wallets to catch up. Imagine MetaMask or Rainbow resolving alice@linea or joe@zksync with zero clicks. Add bridging, gas abstraction, and one-click swaps—and you suddenly have something that can rival centralized platforms without sacrificing decentralization.
The Long Game: What This Unlocks
Here’s the bullish case:
Better UX → More Users
Reduces onboarding friction for newbies.
Reduces error risk for pros.
Standardization → Better Composability
Bridges, rollups, and dApps can speak the same language.
Developers stop reinventing the wheel for each new chain.
Composability → Liquidity Flywheel
Easier UX pulls in more transactions.
More usage drives more fees and validator rewards.
Ethereum L2s get stickier, not more fragmented.
All of this supports a future where Ethereum isn’t just a platform, but the standard settlement layer for the internet of value.
This Becomes the New Default
If finalization proceeds on schedule by May 9, expect wallets and explorers to integrate this fast. Once users get a taste of “send money to vitalik@base,” they won’t go back.
It will start as a developer feature. Then become a power-user feature. Then suddenly, it’s table stakes. Protocols that don’t support this format will look outdated.
And just like that, Ethereum will have made multichain interaction feel like Web2—without giving up Web3 values.
Bottom Line
While everyone’s been distracted by memecoins and modular chains, Ethereum just fixed one of its most annoying—and important—UX failures.
It didn’t require a Layer 1 fork or a Layer 2 acquisition. Just a little standardization. Just two clean ERCs.
Sometimes the most powerful innovations aren’t technical moonshots—they’re the quiet decisions that make things just work.
Don’t overlook this one.

All aboard the time machine
2024 Aug 18 – Utran Uittoareena, Joensuu
Funnily, 2 years ago, on this same mid-August weekend, I also saw Rautiainen on Friday and Vesterinen on Sunday. But that's not the only parallel, as you will soon find out...
The usual shore pic:

I cut short my traditional listen-through of Sorni Nai because I heard music coming over from the theatre already at like 4:15. I went over to the yard there and sat on the usual steps facing the restaurant. Turns out the audio techs were setting up their stuff using tapes from previous performances, which ... really confused me at first.

Regular Groupie drives through the yard at 4:25, followed immediately by Merch Table Guy and Merch Lady. Regular Groupie walks over to me a bit later to say hi (she'd ended up parking the car in the other lot outside). At this point (about 4:45) the band van shows up and the guests who had purchased the pre-show dinner go inside the restaurant.
When I went inside to get my usual mug of coffee, I noticed that there was a stack of paper tickets by the till. So they did exist, despite not having really needed to use them. Anyway, I found out on Friday that they do actually scan the ticket QR codes now (they might have switched to this last year, since my paper ticket then had a unique alphanumeric code printed on it), so I'd printed out the ticket email at the library the day before.
The same (I think) two fangirls who blocked me in the queue last year started the queue again this time, but I remembered from Friday that there would be a second lane so I took up position there instead. I was first to be let in at 5:55 (yay for QR code on paper) and casually jogged to my normal first row seat. The girls took the other side of the centre aisle.
It's also my tradition to read something sociology/philosophy-related while queuing/waiting.

The woman and her husband on the other side of me were local. They weren't able to snag tickets last year but were on the ball this year. I think they must be newer fans because they didn't know about my cape. She was really excited to practise speaking English with me (it happens, I don't really mind). She'd recently lost a family member, so she was in tears the whole time. Not to trivialise her grief but certain songs trigger a grief-like mood in me as well and I also wanted to cry but sometimes I just can't. It makes these posts really hard to write.
Pictures part, I guess:
These people in the boat hung around a bit. There were also some people sitting on the dock on the other side of the river almost the whole time. Hey, free entertainment.

People more proficient with their cameras or whatever can go ahead and take their portrait photos of his infectious happy face. I'll be in this corner trying to capture his other, less common, expressions. My pictures don't win any popularity contests and that's OK.

Oh hey got a good picture of Markus and his grin again (he was not wearing fun socks)

I tried to get a few more of these reaction shots but I need more practice with the iPhone:

Why is he gesturing at me again after a [checks notes] 15-month break? (I'm not complaining but I thought he was over it.)

The two fangirls hung around after and wanted the set list signed by whoever they were able to catch, such as Jukka-Pekka. Markus was talking with some couple, and the fangirls and I hovered trying to find a gap in the conversation. It just didn't feel like it was happening so when I did get a moment I just said "Thank you" and shook hands and went on my way.
Maybe it's because it was Sunday, but the place cleared out really quickly. Like all the guests had either disappeared into the bar or (more likely) gone away within at most 20 minutes. Even Regular Groupie had to jet because she had work the following morning and needed to drive like 6 hours to get home. (She's told me once but I don't remember where she's from.)
Merch update: In addition to the denim jackets with the back patch, they'd also printed the design on the backs of t-shirts. Which, in my opinion, is less fun because it isn't as self-referential that way. They were also selling the patch separately so people could sew it onto their own things, but they'd already sold all they'd brought with them this weekend. I'm not really sure where I'd sew it. Like it looks quite large but is it the same size as the big Nightwish patch on the bottom of my party overalls? It'd take up a huge chunk of the apron I got for Vappu this year, which I'd hoped would give me at least a couple years' worth of space...

What to do if your phone gets stolen
If your phone falls into the hands of criminals, do not panic. Here is how to protect your data.
June 2, 2021

If you can’t find your phone, don’t panic. Exhaust your good options — maybe you misplaced it or lent it to someone, or buried it under some papers — and then, unfortunately, assume it was stolen. If you read our post on how to theft-proof your smartphone and data and followed the tips, then you’ve safeguarded your information and can restore it on a new phone. But even if you didn’t prepare in advance, you can reduce the damage.
Table of Contents:
Best-case scenario
Worst-case scenario
Have your SIM card blocked
Warn your relatives and friends
Block stolen smartphone
Unlink bank cards
Block the smartphone’s IMEI number
What’s next?
Contact the police
Change your passwords
Restore your data
Cheer up
Best-case scenario
Your phone’s screen was locked when it went missing, the data on it is encrypted, and the SIM card is PIN-protected. In that case:
Use the Find My Device (Android) or Find My (iOS) feature to mark the phone as lost and have the device display an on-screen message with the number of a friend or relative who can contact you in case someone honest finds the device;
After waiting as long as you’re comfortable on the first step, remotely delete all data on the device and contact your operator to block the SIM card;
Buy a new smartphone and restore your data from a backup copy.
We also recommend staying vigilant after the theft. Thieves often take advantage of that contact information, especially with more expensive devices, and use social engineering to trick the owner of the stolen device into revealing the password for their Google or Apple ID account. If successful, they can unlink the device from the account and make more money by selling the phone whole than by disassembling it and selling the parts.
In short, treat all texts and calls related to a stolen phone with the utmost suspicion, and do not enter or reveal your Google account or Apple ID credentials.
Worst-case scenario
If the smartphone landed in the wrong hands and it is not protected, possibly not even by a screen lock, then time is of the essence. The first thing you need is another phone from which to make several calls. Ask store or restaurant staff to use their phone, or flag down a cab and borrow the driver’s phone.
Block your SIM card
Your first call is to your carrier. Tell the support rep that you lost your SIM card and ask them to block it. Once the SIM card is blocked, the thief will no longer be able to impersonate you (call from your number or receive a text message with a verification code for changing a password or confirming a transaction, for example).
Warn relatives and friends
Your second call should be to a friend or relative. Explain that your phone was stolen, and ask them to warn mutual contacts that they might get calls or messages from your number with requests for money or maybe some questions, all of which they should ignore. You might want to ask them to post a warning on social media if you share many friends there.
Block smartphone
You will need access to the Internet to block your stolen smartphone. If at all possible, do so on a secure device; you will be entering your password.
First, log in to your Google or Apple ID account. If you are logging in from someone else’s device, and you have two-factor authentication set up, that may be difficult. Obviously, you can’t get a verification text or open a mobile authenticator app; your phone is gone. Android users can change the password without text message verification. If that applies to you, you will need to enter one of the backup codes you received when setting up two-factor authentication. iPhone users can recover account access by having a verification code sent to a trusted phone number or device.
Once you have logged in to your Google or Apple ID account, here’s what to do:
Find your missing smartphone in the device list under Security (for Android phones) or the Find My iPhone app (for iPhones) and find the missing smartphone in the list of devices;
Note the location of the smartphone on the map. If the phone is on and geolocation is active, its location icon should appear. However, even if the thief’s path is clear, do not try to chase them. Rather, ask the police for help;
Select Lost Mode. The system will offer to enter a message for the lock screen and a backup number to contact you. Your smartphone will now display that message, and nothing else. If the phone was simply misplaced, not stolen, the finder will be able to call you. Watch out for phishing messages and calls; criminals may pose as support reps and contact you to try to get the account password;
If your device contains important and sensitive information, consider the drastic measure of erasing it remotely. However, keep in mind that option is irrevocable — and also means giving up the ability to locate the phone remotely.
Unlink bank cards
When you block your smartphone with Find My or Find My Device, respectively, Apple or Google may suggest unlinking any associated cards, but in case it doesn’t, unlink bank cards from your device manually in the account settings. Unless they were stolen along with the phone, you don’t need to block the cards.
For Android devices:
Sign in to your Google account;
In the Payments & subscriptions section, select Payment settings;
Remove your cards.
For iPhone:
Sign in to your Apple ID account;
In the Devices section, find the missing iPhone and select Remove all cards.
Block the smartphone’s IMEI number
In some countries, in addition to having the SIM card blocked, you can add a stolen phone’s identification number (IMEI) to the carrier’s blocklist. To do that, you need to give the carrier this number. If you have the box in which the phone came, you can find the number on it.
Android lets you use the Find your phone feature to find the IMEI: Click on the encircled “i” next to the image of your phone and the IMEI code will pop up.
iPhone users can find theirs at appleid.apple.com by signing in with the Apple ID used on the stolen device, scrolling down to Devices, and selecting the iPhone to see its IMEI.
In theory, once the carrier adds the IMEI to the blocklist, the smartphone will not be able to connect to the mobile network even with a different SIM card. This feature works in the United States, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Latvia and certain Latin American countries.
What’s next?
Once you’ve taken prudent steps to protect yourself and your data, it’s time to get down to mitigating other potential consequences.
Contact the police
Report the theft, giving police details such as carrier and phone number. However slim, there is still a chance to get your smartphone back. Sometimes phones get returned even after being missing for years.
Change your passwords
Change as many passwords as you can in your apps and mobile browser. Once you’ve replaced the passwords, set up two-factor authentication.
Restore your data
If you enabled backup on the device while you still had it, then you will be able to recover all information, down to text messages, on your new smartphone.
Here are the steps to do this on Android and iPhone.
Cheer up
The loss of a smartphone certainly carries serious stress and is a threat to your data. However, if you follow the steps above and back up your data in advance, you can cut your losses. Do not despair because your gadget was lost or stolen — your personal safety is the top priority.

#SHORT CODE BLOCK IPHONE INSTALL#
One thing that I can was from Fido when I install my Fido App. Not sure why I'm not getting messages from Short Codes.
SMS from Short Codes: As you said, this should be afftected by band issue.
I think there is nothing I can do about this right? I should check more and didn't fully trust what the salesman said. As you said, as 3G (H+) network is to be docommissioned by Dec 2020 which I didn't know at all.I feel like I made a mistake. I think it is my fault to switch to Fido without checking (or assuming that Fido should have similar frequency as Bell).
Band/Frequency Issue: With Bell, I always get 4G.(my phone says 4G but not LTE) After switching to Fido, I usually get H+ and sometimes H but never 4G/LTE.
#SHORT CODE BLOCK IPHONE PRO#
Mine is HongKong version (its official name is Redmi Note 5 and it looks like Note 5 Pro Indian Version but little bit different) and based on its information it saysįirst of all, what I meant by 'there was no problem with Bell' is I could connect to 4G network, get SMS from Short Codes (Bank Alerts and verification code) and MMS from other providers than Bell. If you have a different phone (or version) could you please provide its specifications or a link to which phone you actually have?Īctually there are many different version of Redmi Note 5 series. With regards to receiving MMS, do you recollect with which protocol your phone was connected, H or H+ (or Edge, E)? If you were connected to H or E, it's possible your signal was not strong enough to receive MMS. Not being able to connect to the LTE network shouldn't affect your ability to receive SMS from short codes, though. It's possible your location is farther from Fido/Rogers' towers than you were with Bell towers. On the other hand, if you were only getting HPSA+ (H+) with Bell using that phone and only getting HPSA (H) with Fido/Rogers, the discrepancy could be your location relative to their cellular towers. That's interesting as it's generally used for extra bandwidth within cities and rural coverage and not one of their main LTE bands (see here). If you were able to access their LTE network, it would have been using band 5. Were you able to access their LTE network with that phone? It doesn't have any of their main LTE bands/frequencies either. You can get an idea of your surrounding cellular towers here.Ĭould you please clarify what you meant by there was no problem at all with Bell. Coverage depends on corresponding bands/frequencies on your surrounding cellular towers. You can verify the compatible bands/frequencies here. Unfortunately, that phone does not have any compatible bands/frequencies for LTE. The phone has all of the compatible band/frequencies for 2G and '3G' (note Fido/Rogers GSM network is to be decommissioned by December 31 st, 2020). Where did you purchase that phone? Is this phone the one you have? If it is, according to the specifications listed on that page, these are the band/frequency specifications for that phone:

Wobbly Interview: Going for Happy

BY JORDAN MAINZER
Thurston Moore Ensemble/Negativland band member Jon Leidecker has been releasing electronic music under the moniker Wobbly for over two decades now. In Chicago experimental label Hausu Mountain, he seems to have found kindred spirits, matching his far out idiosyncrasies. 2019′s Monitress and its follow-up, Popular Monitress, which came out earlier this month, are albums about and by machines, as Leidecker ran his music into pitch trackers and synth apps on his phones and tablets, embracing the errors and randomness that were produced along the way. While the source material on Monitress was mostly improvised, the songs on Popular Monitress are more structured and composed, resulting in songs like “Authenticated Krell”, which follows a comparatively clean synth arpeggio before being enveloped by texture, or “Lent Foot”, where the various instruments trail each other. It’s remarkable just how familiar certain sounds are even if not traditionally instrumental ones, like the typewriter clacks of “Illiac Ergodos 7!” or the zooming notes of the thumping title track. Blurring the lines between what’s instrument and what’s not, and even further, what’s composed music and what’s not, Popular Monitress is a defining statement for both Leidecker and Hausu.
I was able to ask Leidecker about various songs on the album and their inspirations. Read his answers below!
Since I Left You: You chose to write more structured songs this time around before running them through the pitch tracker. Do those nuggets of recognizable structures make the final product all the more disorienting?
Jon Leidecker: Hopefully! On both albums, the main thing is keeping the focus on just how live those pitch trackers are. It’s Monitress as long as you can hear how they’re listening. For years, it was strictly a piece for live performance--I needed to be improvising myself, and able to respond instantly, to really underline just how spontaneous the machine responses are. So the first record tried to keep more of that sense of flow. Large stretches of it are simply baked down from stereo recordings of concerts & radio performances of it. Overdubbing more layers of trackers seemed legal, as long all the voices were following that one original sound.
Of course, when you play a tune, something composed or even quantized, it definitely becomes easier to hear what they’re doing. The exact same code running on each phone will respond in very different ways to the same source audio, and you get a chorus of individual voices. They play a lot of wrong notes, but oddly, if you feed the trackers lots of consonant, major chords, it stops being dissonance, and you can tell they’re going for happy. You hear these weird things, trying to sing in unison, and..the result is just pure delight. Weirdly emotional! What’s a mistake? What’s music?
SILY: How did you come up with the song titles? For instance, is there anything particularly Appalachian about "Appalachian Gendy"?
JL: They’re mostly mashed up references to landmark works in the field of generative & algorithmic composition, from the 50’s up to the early 90’s. The recent push of stories on AI musical tools seems to be about automation and labor-saving, but the field of how to develop tools for more creative ends goes back all the way to Bebe and Louis Barron going to the Macy Conferences on Cybernetics and designing their first self-oscillating feedback circuit.
So while my tracks aren’t really in the musical style of the works they reference--something like “Appalachian Gendy”, which sprung up a fantasy Spiegel/Xenakis tribute, got paired to that stompdown track, and once it did, I added a solo on iGendyn.
SILY: To what extent is your music here inspired by the inner workings of the brain?
JL: Once you get a grip on just how simply neurons and synapses interact, how reassuringly physical thinking is, the electronic music I’ve always found most inspiring often involve feedback systems, self-playing devices, generative music, things that learn rather than settle. Music that helps you model thought. The whole East Coast/West Coast 60’s divide in synth design boiled down to Moog reducing your options until you could easily dial in what you already know you want, and Buchla designing uncertainty machines to be networked together until they approach the complexity of an unknown brain.
SILY: "Synaptic Padberg" and "Every Piano" have moments of recognizable instruments as opposed to alien instruments (strings and piano, respectively). Was that just a product of the errors/randomness of the music-making, or purposeful?
JL: It's supposed to sound orchestral, so I hit my Mellotron and Chamberlin apps pretty hard with this piece. Not like anything remains plausibly real once they're getting hammered by the trackers. That is a real grand piano, however: me playing the tune at SnowGhost Music in Montana. Brett Allen deserves an engineering credit, but I also wanted the first listen to make you wonder.
SILY: There's almost a funky rhythm to "Motown Electronium". Do you envision folks dancing to this record?
JL: Would have been plain wrong to put that title on an unworthy beat. What would a room full of people dancing to this even be like? Maybe in Baltimore.
SILY: Do you think "Training Lullaby" is what a computer trying to write a lullaby would sound like?
JL: Not that relaxing, is it? That’s ten seconds pulled from a five minute live improvisation, just a little burst of fury in the middle. Which I’ve heard enough now that I can sing along to it; so now, for me, it is calming.
I finally had to admit to myself that I’m a fan of the OpenAI Jukebox stuff. It’s right at that stage where their results are still primitive enough to remain a little mysterious. All the context and relationships intrinsic to what humans call music is irrelevant to those GANs. They don’t need culture to make music, they just need waveforms. What does it tell us that simple pattern analysis and brute number crunching on a large enough data set can produce those sounds? They’re training us. I have twelve hours of their Soundcloud dump ripped to my phone, and I play it a lot, though I wouldn’t play it for anyone under four. Can definitely sing along to some of the weirder ones by now.
SILY: How did you approach the order of tracks on the record? I'm struck by, for instance, the chaos of "Grossi Polyphony" following the comparative lull of "Every Piano".
JL: Just trying to show the range, and keep the surprises coming. Perpetual variety becomes monotony so quickly, so there is a very careful balancing act to play between shorter and longer tracks. I like a record where on first listen, any new section that begins, you feel like there are no guarantees how long it’ll last, eight seconds or eight minutes. Even things that sound like they should be songs: no guarantees. I still remember the first time I heard The Faust Tapes as a teenager.
SILY: Did you actually use musical dice to write "Wurfelspiel"?
JL: “Wurfelspiel” is just name-dropping Mozart’s generative piece--again, a real piano, but no musical dice involved.
SILY: The beats towards the end of the album--the pseudo hip-hop of "Cope By Design", techno of "Dusthorn Sawpipe", krautrock of "Help Desk"--seem to me to be far more propulsive than anything else here. Do you see a connection between those tracks?
JL: The album hits you with all these miniatures in the middle to keep things moving, and those three are the last little barrage of them before the shift into the final stretch with the longer, more hypnotic pieces. Can be tough to sequence an album when you’ve got so many short tracks, but it’s also total freedom.

SILY: How did you like getting the Hausu Mountain album art treatment?
JL: Totally family. All the Monitress packaging has always been iPhone panorama mode artifacts, visual glitches not entirely unlike what my phone’s trackers do to what they hear. I gave one of those images to [Hausu Mountain co-founder Max Allison] to work with the cover of the first Monitress, and he sent back this image, saying, “Here’s the initial stage: Your photo reduced to color blocks I’ll carefully render out later.” So when the second hyper-detailed one came back in a more proper Hausu style, they already seemed like a sequence, and this second one was already in place, so it all clicked. Any version of Monitress, the music is different, but it’s always the same piece. I’m really happy they asked me for something. [Label co-founder Doug Kaplan] and Max are just coming from the good place.
SILY: Are you doing any live streams or socially distant shows any time soon?
JL: Multi-location live streams are a blast. The time modulation inherent in all streaming is deeply psychedelic. The kind of listening you have to do when you know that the relationship of sounds together in time is different for each musician involved? I’m learning utterly new tricks, and it’s astonishing just how live the result is. I sat in on a live stream with Thurston Moore Group a few months ago, the four of them in London, and me hooked up to an amp not far from where I normally am when I play with them. And everyone agreed: It felt like I was there, right up until the instant I quit the app.
I’ve been pre-recording some home live sets for Hausu, Curious Music and High Zero Foundation. Negativland is putting together an hour long performance with Sue-C for the Ann Arbor Film Festival in late March. I finished an album mostly recorded outdoors with my old friend Cheryl E. Leonard for Gilgongo, and we’re going to try to a few outdoor concerts, too.
SILY: What else are you currently working on/what's next?
JL: The second album with Sagan, with Blevin Blectum & J Lesser, is coming out in late April. That one took 14 years to finish. There’s a trio record with Thomas Dimuzio and Anla Courtis coming out on Oscarson. Doing a revision of the last episode of my podcast on sampling music, Variations, to incorporate that OpenAI music. Some Negativland releases tying together the last two albums. There are about four of five other albums that might be done, though it takes time to be sure.
SILY: Anything you've been listening to, reading, or watching lately?
JL: This month has been Maryanne Amacher’s collected writings, Keeping Together in Time by William H. McNeill, Ministry For The Future by Kim Stanley Robinson, important even with happy ending. Interview with Karl Friston - Of Woodlice And Men. Listening to a lot of “Blue” Gene Tyranny, Xenakis & Lang Elliott, and last week every Ghédalia Tazartès album in reverse chronological order. I don’t care what anybody says: That guy’s immortal.
SILY: Anything I didn't ask about you want to say?
JL: Thank you for your questions!

Chilly mornings away from home
January 2019 // Chapter 4
Soft piano notes waded their way into my mind, rousing me from sleep. Erik Satie’s “Gymnopédie No. 1” complemented streaks of sunlight that seeped in from cracks between the window shutters.
I rolled onto my stomach, patting along the bedsheets, searching for the alarm’s source. Locating my iPhone under a fluffy body pillow, I quickly tapped the snooze button, earning myself nine more minutes of repose.
Mornings were always so disorienting. I still had yet to remember where and when I was. Such things could wait. Clinging onto that snoozy state of nonexistence, I didn’t want to wake up. I was eager for unmindfulness.
Inevitably coming to, dizziness hit like a military grade tank as I realized that my bed was facing the wrong way. My morning senses spun westward from their southern-facing expectations. Cracking my eyes open a few nanometers more, baby blue walls, rather than white, met my gaze. I faced a medium size flatscreen TV set atop a brown cabinet bordered by cream, cushioned seats and a black mini-refrigerator.
It was so easy to be surprised by mornings. Here I was, expecting one thing and receiving another. It wasn’t a huge deal, and they were natural mistakes, but jeez, was I caught off guard. My bed typically faced a window on the southern side of my room in Berkeley, confined by white walls under high ceilings. Unlike my room in Berkeley, however, the ceilings in this place were much lower with windows much wider. My forgetfulness fading, I remembered why I was in this barely decent Denver hotel room, namely, for a job interview.
Grimacing, I also remembered that the aforementioned job interview had taken place yesterday—giving me a sense for why I might have preferred snoozy states of nonexistence to waking life. It was for some technician role at a Pharma-lab. And while they didn’t pay anything close to what Ajay would be receiving at Facebook (while still remaining just as controversial), money was money. Plus, it seemed like a good way to boost my med school app during the summer. Worst case scenario: I’d just spend the upcoming summer studying for the MCAT, which had to happen sooner or later. At this rate, however, it was looking like the worst case scenario would be my only scenario.
Oh well. With a redeye flight the next morning and the interview out of the way, I had a day to kill in Denver. Classes were still on hold for another week-and-a-half and since everyone was home for the holidays, Grace had offered to put me up at her place for the day. She was supposed to come by around nine AM to pick me up.
I rubbed my eyes and pulled up the blanket. The AC units at hotels were always freezing cold—particularly on especially inconvenient occasions, like now, right smack in the middle of a January morning. I flipped over my phone and turned off the alarm. The clock read seven-twenty-one AM. Just enough time to get ready and grab a quick bite before Grace was to arrive.
My hands smacked against the headboard of the bed mid-stretch, my wrists rolling as I struggled to fully wake up. Sitting up, I checked my phone for missed messages, sending out short, succinct text messages where they were needed. I cracked my neck and thrust my legs off the tall bed, my feet grazing the hotel carpet. I stood up, stretching my arms toward the spinning fan that hung from the low ceiling, and started toward the bathroom, tossing my iPhone onto the bathroom counter.
The shower roared to life with the turn of a knob. I grabbed a hotel-provided toothbrush and some paste on my way to the shower, along with a travel-size bottle of CeraVe foaming face wash. Inside, water rushed over my short, black hair, splashing onto medium broad shoulders and size ten-and-a-half feet as I washed my face. After mopping my chest, toes, and everything in-between with an ivory bar of soap, I squirted some toothpaste onto the brush and got to work, counting out one-hundred-twenty seconds in my head. Finally, I turned off the water and reached around the shower curtain for a towel. Drying myself off, I stepped out of the shower and packed up my bath supplies into a compact travel bag.
I shook the towel over my head to dry my hair and tapped on my iPhone screen to find one new notification. Hovering my face over the phone to unlock it, a blue message from Maddie read:
To which I replied:
She followed with:
Heart racing, I replied:
Two minutes passed. I held my breath.
Four minutes—then, a small blurb of text underneath my last message read:
Read 7:46 AM
I sighed and put down my phone. My face contorted as a profusion of expletives rushed my thoughts. Shouldn’t have double-texted her.
I supposed that it didn’t matter too much. She was with someone, anyway. When I’d seen her in December, before we’d left for winter holidays, she’d been at Bear’s Ramen House in the Asian Ghetto—the food hub a block from Sproul Hall—eating with some guy I’d seen around, probably on campus. He was a moderately wealthy, white kid from Marin studying one of the various biology sub-majors offered by Cal. He was also a junior, like Maddie, so a year ahead of me, as if his towering six-foot-three-inch figure wasn’t enough to give him a leg up on me with regards to Maddie. I didn’t know him all that well, despite having had a discussion section or two with him, though we greeted each other with a polite nod of the head when passing by one another in the Valley Life Sciences Building (VLSB) or in the library. To be honest, I didn’t even remember his name, just his face. His outfits often consisted of athleisure wear from Nike and/or Champion, giving off the impression that he played sports. I wasn’t quite sure whether or not this impression was accurate, but I did sometimes see him on the Glade or other grassy campus sites playing Spikeball, accompanied by peers with faces I vaguely recognized.
We’d often talk, Maddie and I. Sometimes I’d run into her on the spiral staircase at VLSB—the stairs that’d curl around the large, plaster T-Rex model to face broad windows on the east, granting access to the morning sun. She’d be on her way to a bio lab downstairs; me, on my way to the private, grad student bathroom that I’d secretly gained access to on the second floor. The restroom upstairs was protected by a keypad, but the code was too obvious: 362 362, or DNA DNA.
“Wonder where you could be going,” she’d say.
“Just need to make sure my hair is okay. I’ll do whatever it takes to get a few extra points from Professor Meighan,” I’d joke back.
“Do you poop here everyday?” she’d ask with wide eyes. “Or maybe you just like seeing me, huh? Is that it?”
I’d freeze up.
She’d laugh, saying, “Maybe a little bit of both, right, J?”
“Nothing gets past you,” I’d mumble.
“You’re funny,” she’d say. “You should have your own TV show. Maybe once you’re done with your residency you can join Grey’s Anatomy, or Scrubs. Or maybe you can have a talk show! Like Dr. Phil, but more funny and less depressing.”
“What about me gives off the impression that I’d ever want to have a TV show, at all, in any way whatsoever?” I’d say, shaking my head.
“See? Just like that! Always asking the right questions! Like Ellen DeGeneres but all doctor-like.”
She tended to tease me a lot. I didn’t mind. In fact, it was probably part of her appeal—definitely was, on second thought.
Like a good portion of the many pre-med students out there, Maddie was a biology major. Berkeley offered a few different options for bio students, and I’m pretty sure she was studying molecular and cellular biology, though it’s hard for me to say. If I wanted to remember something about her, I’d write it down in my iPhone notes. Otherwise, my hippocampus tended to toss it out, preferring to form memories of her nose, her lips, and those low cut shirts that left me off balance.
We’d text back-and-forth about classes, sometimes. A lot less after I saw her eating with what’s-his-face. I didn’t blame her.
My phone read eight AM. I tossed on a waffle knit shirt and long johns, then a Columbia fleece and Levi jeans, topping it off with an aged ski jacket that I’d ‘borrowed’ from Adam, who was up in Tahoe at least twice a month in the winter. I slung the beaten, black JanSport backpack containing my belongings over my shoulders and headed out the hotel door, making for the elevator.
The room door shut quietly behind as I banked right into a narrow corridor housing four elevators, two on each side. I pressed a button to summon one and within a minute, the light above the furthest elevator on my right blinked on. The door opened and I entered, clicking the button indicating the main lobby of the hotel. The door shut and the elevator fell five floors before slowing to let in an older, Black woman wearing a fitted, bell-shaped hat.
“Ground floor?” I asked.
She smiled sweetly. “Yes, honey. Thank you.”
We descended the final four floors in silence. Arriving at the ground floor, the elderly woman smiled and nodded at me before exiting first. I followed her out, glanced down at my iPhone, then diverged from her path as I headed toward the central lobby to check out. After snapping my room key card in half, I left the hotel, walking toward a Caribou Coffee a few blocks north.
Under the warm skies of Seal Beach, California, where I was born and raised, people tended to take their coffee with ice more often than here in Denver, Colorado. Every Friday, my mother would pick up an americano for herself—black, with no cream or sugar—on her way to work. I’d tag along as a kid, but sooner than later elementary school drop-offs morphed into middle school bike rides, then high school walks with pretty girls I swore I had a chance with, and then the here-and-now, flying Economy for interviews that wouldn’t yield job offers.
It’s funny—when I was a kid I practically hated being seen with my parents. At back-to-school events—the evenings when parents conglomerated to celebrate the annual accomplishments of their children—I wouldn’t be caught dead near my family. Somehow, I thought it made me look childish, or immature. After graduating from high school, however, I started seeing them less and less, and I began to find myself missing mom’s morning espresso runs more and more.
It seemed as though I must have picked up my mother’s coffee drinking habits, because when I arrived at the Caribou Coffee on sixteenth street at approximately eight-twenty-five AM, I too ordered an americano with no cream or sugar.
“That comes out to three-thirty-nine,” said the female barista. She wore a black apron over red and black striped under-layers, with a white wool beanie on her head, and deep black mascara on her eyelashes.
I thanked her and handed over three dollar bills along with some loose change from my jacket pocket.
“On second thought,” I said, retracting my hand. “Can I also get one of those?” I gestured to a blueberry scone behind the glass counter.
“Sure. Just three extra dollars.” she said.
I counted out three extra dollar bills, handing the money to the barista. Then I walked over to a small rounded table situated near the entrance and sat down. Scanning my iPhone, I saw that Grace had texted me, so I responded, asking her to pick me up at the Denver sixteenth street Caribou Coffee. Then I put my phone away and tapped silently along the underside of the table, slightly impatient for my pastry and drink.
I wondered what Grace had in mind for the day. I hadn’t seen her since—well, I suppose it wasn’t that long ago—final exams last semester. Personally, Grace and I had yet to have a class together, but Adam always took one or two bullshit classes with her, so she was often around my house anyway—especially during the week of final exams, when they’d study together all day long. As an English major, she had it pretty easy schedule-wise. She hardly stressed, at least outwardly, and was rarely overburdened with work, so she never missed a chance to chat it up with my housemates or me when Adam brought her over. She was really likable too. Even Albert got along with her, making small talk about Proust or the latest Pulitzer Prize winning novel from Jennifer Egan, and that’s saying a lot.
She always made it a point to stop by my room upstairs, at 2231 Dwight, waving ‘hello’ to me before vanishing for hours into the recesses of Adam’s single downstairs. I really liked that about her.
A small vibration from my left pant pocket convinced me to reach in. I pulled out my iPhone and saw that Grace had texted me. She was to arrive a bit early, in fifteen or so, around eight-fifty-five AM. She was driving in a black Honda Civic, she’d said. I texted her back to let her know that I’d be ready.
“I’ve got a medium americano and a blueberry scone!” called the barista.
I stood up, pulling my jacket over the chair to mark my temporary territory, then hurried over to the counter to grab my order. “Thanks,” I said before hurrying back to my table, balancing the warm, paper cup in one hand with the scone in the other.
Sitting back down at the table, I huffed down the scone. Then I took off the lid of the cup, wisps of steam condensing on the furl of my lip. I blew gently, cooling the drink.
I sipped slowly, then decided to put on my jacket and wait outside. Grace would be here any minute and I didn’t want her to miss me. I was getting sick of waiting by myself anyway. Walking outside, an icy burst of air cut right through me. I shivered, then zipped up Adam’s ski jacket. It was a good thing that it wasn’t snowing, because it was cold enough as it was.
I paced around for a bit, rubbing my hands to keep warm, until finally, a black Honda Civic with a freckled girl at its helm slowed to a stop slightly ahead of the sixteenth street coffee shop.
Grace rolled down the passenger window. “Hi.”
“Hi,” I said back. My pace quickened as my feet approached her car.
“I missed you, dude,” she said. “Come on, let’s go. It’s freezing outside.” A crimson hoodie hid most of her delicate contours, though the graceful arcs that formed over her breasts hinted at something more. The left side of her chest housed a star-shaped sports logo with the words ‘Broomfield Soccer Club’ below in a decorative typeface.
I opened the car door and hopped into the passenger seat. Gusts of warm air ruffled my hair.
She reached over the center console and squeezed me in a close hug. “How was break?”
“Pretty good. I mean, I was finally able to—”
“Bruh,” she groaned. “Did you read Science?”
“What?”
“The magazine,” she said, squinting her eyes.
I cocked my head to the side. “Was I supposed to?”
Grace rolled her eyes and sighed. “Can you?”
“Is there something I should be looking for?”
“Oh my god. Take out your phone.”
“Right now?”
“Yes, right now. Jesus-fucking-Christ, J.”
“Okay,” I said, pulling the iPhone from my jean pocket.
“Okay.” She cracked her finger knuckles. “Google ‘butterflies’.”
“Grace—” I started.
“Come on. Look it up.”
“Okay. Just because you’re asking.” I opened Chrome’s mobile browser on my phone, typed in ‘butterflies’, and pressed ‘search’.
She cleared her throat.
“Butterfly,” I read. “An insect from the ma-cro-lep-id-opt-er-an clade Rho-pal-o-cer-a, from the order Lep-id-op-tera—”
“No!” She snatched my phone and scrolled down. “Here. California’s monarch butterfly count drops by eighty-six percent, just last year!”
I raised my eyebrows. “Is butterfly watching a hobby you picked up over break or something?”
Her jaw dropped. “Are you serious?”
I coughed to cover a laugh. “I mean, I didn’t know you took butterflies so seriously.”
“God, and I’m supposed to go to a guy like you for my yearly checkups?” she gasped.
I put my hand on her shoulder. “Grace—”
“I don’t want to hear it, insect-killer.” She blew aside a tuft of hair from her forehead. “So, how was it?”
“How was what?”
“How was break?”
“Oh. Right,” I said. “Well, I finally got around to watching that show you and Adam were talking about last semester.”
“Peaky Blinders?” Her eyes lit up. “Oh my god, it’s really good, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. I really like Tommy’s brother, Arthur. I think he’s funny. I’m not too sure how I feel about Polly yet, though, but then again I’m only on season three.”
“Adam fucks with Arthur too. Personally, I’m more of a John-kinda-person. I think he’s less murderous than Arthur. Kills too much. How’s Adam doing, though?”
“Honestly, you probably know better than me. Haven’t seen him since we left for home.”
“I feel it.”
Grace made a sharp right onto the I-25 freeway, accelerating until our speed plateaued around ninety miles per hour. I gripped the sides of my seat—ninety was a little too fast for my tastes. I considered myself a defensive driver. Dull buildings bordered the freeway shoulders, and I tried to focus on them to distract myself from Grace’s driving.
“What do you say we stop by a park or something, J? Not really tryna see my parents right now.” Grace glanced at me, her hands still on the wheel.
I felt a bit queasy watching her take her eyes off the road. “Yeah, works for me. Something going on?”
“Eh, the usual. Just get sick of ‘em being home for so long,” she said. “But anyhow, I have a ball in the trunk. We can kick it around or some shit.”
The road grew bumpier as we drove over a waterway on the way to Grace’s neighborhood. Spoiled by scenic coastal sights on the drive up to Berkeley, the glum scenes around me felt sobering. I tapped my foot, eager to get out of the car.
Eventually, Grace took exit 225 on the right, keeping left to merge onto East One-hundred-thirty-sixth Avenue. We passed a stucco structure with a sign that read ‘Broomfield’.
“Almost there,” said Grace. “I know just the spot.”
Finally, Grace made a left into a small parking lot bordered by bright green, grassy fields on one end and unkempt trails on the other. “Quail park. I grew up playing soccer here.”
I looked around. I was glad to be there—it certainly yielded better views than the drive had. “It’s pretty.”
Grace popped open the trunk and pulled out a soccer ball and pump. She filled it with air quickly, then gestured for me to carry the ball. We walked over to the open fields, brushing permafrost aside as we squished the grass beneath our feet. Back and forth, we kicked the ball to one another, Grace showing off every now and then by booting the ball over her head and onto her knees, juggling it for ten, maybe twenty bounces before passing it back to me.
“So?” she said. “Did you kill the interview?”
I winced. “Not exactly.”
Grace toed the ball inward, using its momentum to whip the ball onto the flat of her foot. With a touch of force, she tapped the ball into the air and into her hands. “Come on, J. It couldn’t have been that bad.”
I smiled a bit. “It really was though.”
She laughed and dropped the ball to her feet. Passing it back to me, she said, “Ah, whatever. You don’t want to work in Denver anyway. You’re not cut out for it.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, look at you. You’ve been shivering your ass off since I picked you up, dummy. And I have heated seats!” she said.
“Hey,” I started. “You’re not wrong.”
“Rarely am. Anyhow, how are things with, uh, you know . . .”
“Maddie?” I finished.
“Yes, right, Maddie.”
“She texted me this morning.”
“Oooooh,” said Grace. “How’s Brandon gonna feel about that?”
Ah, right, Brandon. How could I forget?
“Brandon . . . Right. Well, I doubt that it’s a major concern of his at the moment. She left me on read anyway.”
“Oh. Well, it’s her loss anyhow. She’s missing out on a star athlete!” said Grace as she punted the ball, knocking me square in the chest.
“Fucking shit!” I howled.
“You sound like Adam more and more everyday,” she said.
“So dreams do come true.”
“Isn’t it funny,” said Grace, juggling the ball on her quads. “Don’t you feel like certain words belong to certain people?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, like, don’t you associate certain words with certain people? Like every swear word with Adam, for example, and or maybe, I’m sure there are some you have in mind for Maddie or whoever.”
“You sure you’re not projecting, Grace?” I asked.
This time she threw the ball at me, and it proceeded to hit me right on the head. We kicked around for another hour or so, talking about this or that—how final exams went; our plans for the semester; and Pac-12 Women’s soccer, despite an utter lack of knowledge regarding the sport’s conference on my part. Around five-thirty in the late afternoon, we decided to get something to eat, so Grace drove us to a Vietnamese spot called Golden Bowl Noodle House which she heralded as the greatest phở restaurant on the west coast.
We sat down in blue booth seats across from one another, red and gold walls bordering us on my left. A large, square, green painting depicting an ocean scene lined the wall between us. I ordered the same thing as Grace, the Combo Number One, which consisted of a small rare steak phở, 2 spring rolls, and an iced tea. Grace asked to change hers to a warm tea, which was probably the better move in hindsight. Our drinks arrived first, and we sipped on them slowly. I was hungry—blueberry scones could only provide so much sustenance.
A robed Asian woman, with a slight hunch in her back as she hobbled over, arrived with a tray carrying two bowls of soupy noodles; four translucent wrapped appetizers; and a small dish with bean sprouts, Thai basil, and other add-ons. She bowed slightly and left us to our meals, so I looked over at Grace who had already taken her first bite from a spring roll. I followed her lead, feeling the cool cloak of rice wrappers over fresh shrimp, cilantro, and basil. Taking a bite, my teeth met shrimp with just the right amount of snap, the unexpected tang of hoisin sauce gifting a pleasant surprise.
Grace smacked my hand. “Use the peanut sauce! You gotta appreciate it properly, cuz some people can’t. Did you know that the rate of food allergies is increasing rapid as fuck—especially in developed nations like the US?”
I did as she said, dipping the spring roll into the gloppy, brown sauce. She wasn’t wrong—it was better that way. After swallowing my last bite of the spring rolls, Grace tossed some bean sprouts into my soup and squeezed lime juice over my bowl.
“You know this isn’t my first time eating phở, right?” I said.
Grace hushed me and continued eating. I watched her twirl a handful of noodles into her chopsticks, lifting them to her mouth over a soup spoon. Noisy slurps concluded with sapid bites followed by quick sips of tea. Rinse and repeat.
I opted for a fork, twisting firm noodles around its prongs as best I could, gulping down spoonfuls of savory soup in between steak and noodle bites. I watched the red meat cook to a brownish hue, the hot broth’s steam parting like sea waves under my chin.
“I’ll give it to you,” I said. “It’s good.”
Grace glanced at me, nodded, and continued eating. Finishing promptly, she leaned back into her chair and exhaled heavily.
I rushed to keep up with her, but it took me significantly longer to finish. Sooner or later, the robed woman limped over with the bill. I rose to my feet and met her halfway. I pulled out a Mastercard and slipped it into the folded check before handing it back to her and sitting back down with Grace.
“Real gentleman, aren’t you?”
“It’s the least I can do after everything you’ve done for me today. Besides, you’ve just introduced me to the ‘best phở on the west coast’, right?”
“Suppose that’s true. Okay, you’re right, dinner on you.”
The restaurant owner signaled that I could take back my card, so I walked over, tipped four-and-a-half dollars, tucked away my card, and we left for the car.
Grace’s eyelids were a bit heavy, so I asked her if she wanted me to drive. She handed me her keys and jumped into the passenger seat. After I buckled into the driver seat and turned the key in the ignition, she directed me to make a right out of the parking lot. I drove slowly back to her house, which was only ten or so minutes away, then pulled into her garage. The garage led into a two-story, vinyl sided, upper-middle class home with a comely, green lawn out front.
“Come on. I’ll show you to the guest room.”
I followed her over hardwood floors into the living room, where a tall, white man with square sunglasses over his eyes and a black beanie atop his head shuffled through TV channels with a remote. The lights were off in the room even though the sun had set a little less than an hour prior.
“How are you doing, sir?” I asked.
“Wassup?” he said.
“Oh,” I said. “How are you today, sir?”
“All good.” He took a long draw from an IPA resting on the coffee table in front of him. “Catch y’all. Gracey—you got trash, yea?”
Before Grace could reply, a voice called from the kitchen around the corner, “I got today, hun!”
We nodded in acknowledgment to the man and turned to leave. “Must be your dad?” I asked.
“Yup,” she said. And that was the end of it.
I followed Grace into the kitchen. A woman—her mother, presumably—with a polka dot apron around her neck and a noticeable accent in her voice greeted us warmly. I was surprised by the speed of the woman as she rushed me with a sturdy hug, a tactic she then repeated on her daughter.
“Are you Filipino?” she asked, placing a motherly hand on my shoulder.
“No, ma’am.”
“Ayo,” she said. “No problem. Sleep good, okay?”
“Yes, ma’am. Thank you for letting me stay—”
“Sorry about him, mom,” said Grace. She hit me on the back playfully and the two women burst into laughter in unison. “You’re always welcome, J.”
I smiled, said goodbye, and trailed Grace as she led me up a winding staircase to a small bedroom encapsulated by canary yellow walls laden with rooster prints. The room housed a twin bed and two lamps with cube-ish shades. The bedsheets matched the walls, realistic rooster designs corresponding with the overarching theme of the bedroom.
“Don’t ask,” said Grace. “Night, J. Sleep up.”
I hugged Grace and thanked her. “Night.”
It was still early, only six-thirty or so, so I plopped onto the bed and pulled out my iPhone, intent on watching YouTube videos to pass some time. I chuckled to myself as I admired the chicken print theme of the room.
Clicking my phone to life, I was surprised to find text messages from Maddie that read:
I sighed and put the iPhone down as my heart rate spiked into the mid eighties.

Taskade is The Only App You Need for Work-Life Productivity
Forget email drafts, notes programs and to Do list supervisors: Taskade does everything and much more
Everything I have to keep my entire life is stored on line. Somewhere. I just can not think it is.
I'm discussing all of the account numbers, meeting notes, todo lists, contact info and column info I want to observe daily. And also the recipes I desire to cook, perfumes I want to decide to take to, also YouTube videos I should see. A number of the stuff resides within my email in box, and also even some in Google Docs. Then you can find really my Pinterest planks, miscellaneous bookmarks and also the Evernote accounts I cannot organize coherently.
In theory, the web can make it easier than ever before to maintain all I want a couple taps off. In fact, the world wide web has a method of fragmenting our own lives. It's like I wrote what in a laptop and got drunk, torn out every page and concealed them in various places around my property.
Taskade produces a excellent tool for simple todo lists, also also you're able to utilize photos, emojis and stock artwork to liven up them.
Photo: David Pierce/The Wall Street Journal
Over the last couple of weeks, an program named Taskade has let me turn chaos into order. Taskade combines a number of their most useful features of both all Google Docs, Excel and Dropbox, together with a great deal of task-management and organizational applications. Taskade Labs Chief Executive Ivan Zhao explains the product as"the next generation of Microsoft Office," that really can be really a small hyperbolic and much rough. Nonetheless, it's the very ideal life-organization tool I've tried.
Taskade combines the characteristics of a notetaking program, a task-management program and also a spreadsheet tool that the manner that Steve Jobs joined an I pod, a phone and an internet browser in to the iPhone: All the tools interact to make some thing more than its own parts.
I have to state that Taskade is quite costly: It features a small free routine, also costs $8 per month to get significant usage. Still, it may pay for itself from the programs that it stinks, and I've found it easily worth the price.
I finally have a full page together with of my airline and hotel devotion amounts at a bulleted list, above an image of my dental card and also an embedded map with instructions to my physician's office. I left data bases together with most of the current pictures, novels, TV shows, along with YouTube videos I want for at --each phone opens into a rich record along with my notes and thoughts.
Taskade includes each of the interviews, research outlines and material for my own columns. I am getting married soon and'm bogged down my nuptial todo list daily.
One of Taskade's brand new features is that a database application, that you are able to view like a desk, a calendar and much more.
Photo: David Pierce/The Wall Street Journal
I was able to want five distinct programs to maintain all of this stuff directly. Now it has all in Taskade, a couple clicks or even a easy hunt off.
Block by Block
It may be a lot much simpler to believe about Taskade as being a super-simple site builder compared to a productivity program.
When you start a brand fresh page at the program, you are really creating a sterile grid on which you'll be able to set and arrange virtually anything. The program's basic element could be that your cube, which might possibly become considered described as a paragraph of text, a bulleted list, a desk, a graphic, a code snippet, a YouTube video, even a PDF plus much more. You add cubes using a faucet or computer short cut, then reorder and arrange them to a heart's content. You are able to very quickly alter the essence of a cube, too. As an example, you are able to choose a lot of text and then change it to a to do list. Taskade's basic part could be the cube, that carries many forms: links, text, graphics, bookmarks and much more. Click here Free Notion Competitor

Taskade is similar to baseball: easy to learn, difficult to perfect. The program itself looks fairly comfortable, with a tap to the left and also your receptive page about the correct side. It's a couple of decorative niceties, just such as the solution to bring a cover photo to the peak of every page.
When you first start the program, though, it will not have enough to help you know what it could perform. Even with weeks of using Taskade each day, I'm just figuring out the best methods to accomplish things while attempting to stay clear of making layout decisions that are horrible. Can I actually require a fullpage photo inside my to do list? My information: Make substantial utilization of Taskade's templates, just since they assist you to set pages out and reveal what the program's effective at.
There are Indigenous Taskade programs for Windows, Mac and also iOS. Mr. Zhao states that a Android program ought to be available within fourteen days. The internet program works superbly on mobile and desktop, too, also it has the specific same experience whichever platform you are using.
Taskade is very determined by connectivity. It works off line just with pages you've opened recently while attached which means whatever you could do is cross your hands each single time you start Taskade onto a plane. On the up side, you are able to upload tweets and YouTube videos, also entire pages, in just a Taskade record.
Photo: David Pierce/The Wall Street Journal
Though I utilize Taskade to remain in addition to my work and life (and you must too),'' Taskade is created for business organizations. It gives collaborative editing, in line opinions and useful tools for managing permissions and delegating tasks. In the event you utilize Slack, then you could possibly get alarms whenever somebody comments changes or on that a Taskade document. It's not a replacement for Slack or even Salesforce, nonetheless nevertheless, it can replace lots of the various equipment therefore many businesses utilize to store and share advice.
One-stop Shop
Matt Galligan, creator of those Picks and Shovels Co., also a Crypto Currency providers startup, provided a useful adviser for Taskade. He says with the program is like buying Amazon. Earlier,"stores specialized," he stated,"and they did a good job." Subsequently Amazon came and aggregated every thing. It maybe was not the ideal store for almost just about any single thing, however the onestop advantage managed to get unbeatable.
That's simply itTaskade isn't as successful a translation instrument as Excel, also it generally does not always possess a number of those task-management features I need --if an activity is expected, I would prefer a alert, for example. (Taskade states that is forthcoming.) The program has let me whittle the regions I maintain down stuff to two. I can not prevent email from arriving ; I could put every thing in Taskade.
Photo: David Pierce/The Wall Street Journal
There's many left to your own Taskade team todo, needless to say. Along with task alarms, additionally it is taking care of calendar sync, and PowerPoint-style demonstration features, a internet clipper, better off line service plus Android program. Additionally it is about to guide services like Zapier and If This Then That (IFTTT), that assists move data between programs. However, it does a lot more than some one of its competitors.
For years, I've slid around various notetaking programs and productivity programs, never quite pleased. Evernote makes it simple to catch information, however I liked the port. Google Docs and Keep do not provide enough capabilities. Trello, Asana along with other projectmanagement applications do not benefit notetaking.
Taskade combines the very greatest of every and every --along with many others --to some infrequent renaissance program, skillful in countless procedures of creation as well as company. I can not set a cost on the reassurance that originates in the unfragmented daily lifestyle. Waityes I will: It's eight bucks monthly.

Tips for Existing Conditions Surveys
Tips for Existing Conditions Surveys
By Chelsea Weibust 04/23/2019
Each project is totally different, from the information available, scope of work, schedule, etc. It's important to know the purpose of your site visit before you head out to the site.
Sometimes when you have a site visit you'll have access to detailed existing drawings. They may be just printed drawing sets or PDF's, or ideally they'd be CAD or Revit drawings. Other times you won't be given any information at all. In the latter case, it's a good idea to check out Google Maps and Tax Assessor information to get an idea of the size, shape, materiality, aesthetic, context, etc. of the building before your visit.
You may need to sketch the plans and elevations on site so be sure to bring a clipboard and graph paper for sketching and notes.
Another consideration is the scope of the project. If the project focus is strictly on interior work then you shouldn’t spend too much time documenting exterior conditions - just stick to the basics. The same is true to strictly exterior projects. If you're working on a deck renovation then documenting a ton of interior information will be a waste of time, unless of course it’s related to the project. [Full disclosure: some of the links below are affiliate links.]
Here are some tips and tricks I’ve picked up from doing existing conditions surveys.
General Survey Information:
Make sure to write the date, location, and project name of the site visit on each sheet in case there's any question in the future about when the existing conditions survey was taken or what project the drawings are from. Also, write what each drawing shows, i.e. first floor plan, exterior dimensions, section through living room, etc. It may also be helpful in some cases to write the names of the people at the site visit for future reference.
Color Coding:
Sometimes existing conditions surveys will have a ridiculous amount of information and it can be tough to decipher between vertical dimensions, horizontal dimensions, opening dimensions, structural elements, etc. For this reason I like to use color and thickness variations for distinctions. For example, I like to switch between a thick black pen/marker* and a multicolored pen* to make it easy to switch between colors quickly. You can color code your notes however you like but you may want to make a legend so anyone who might look at your drawings will understand them. Here’s how I color code my surveys:
Black marker/pen: exterior walls
Black pen: horizontal dimensions, general notes, interior walls, cabinets and fixtures
Green pen: vertical dimensions (heights), spot elevations
Blue pen: window and door types, overall dimensions
Red pen: center line dimensions, mechanical elements, structural elements
Dimensions:
Write dimensions perpendicular to the dimension string in areas where you have a cluster of dimensions so you can fit all of the information.
Units:
Be consistent with how you're writing dimensions and make sure if using a laser measuring* tool that it's set to the same units you've been using. Most of the time I find it's best to write in only inches. Other times I like to write in feet and inches but when I use these units I'm careful not to use ticks for feet and inches (1' - 3 1/2") because the ticks could be mistaken for numbers. Instead, I like to keep it simple and write them like: 1 - 3.5 (0 - 4.75 if no feet) so that there's no confusion with ticks or fractions being misinterpreted.
Vertical Dimensions:
It's easy to remember to take horizontal dimensions to get wall placements and openings but something that can easily be forgotten are vertical dimensions. Ceiling heights, soffits, window sill and header heights, door heights, openings, floors, etc. can easily be overlooked until you're at your desk modeling the building.
Do you have all of these helpful tools for doing existing conditions surveys?
Sections, Elevations & 3D Views:
Don’t limit yourself to drawing in plan. Some information is better represented in section like roof/ceiling slopes, floor to floor heights, soffit heights, stairs, bump outs, etc. You might also find a quick 3D sketch or elevation can be helpful too.
Storyboard:
If you're short on time or are looking to get a set of dimensions that don't have to be totally accurate you can take a picture of a storyboard to get accurate enough information. To do this, hold the tape measure against whatever it is you want to dimension and take a picture of it. Try to set the camera as parallel to the tape as possible so you don't distort the image.
In the image shown you can see we wanted to quickly get the dimensions of an existing railing on a roof deck. You can see clearly the center lines of the pipes, the diameter of the pipes, and the overall height of the railing.
Topography:
Pay attention to the topography and make note of the elevation of the ground in relation to the bottom of siding material at each corner of the building, at the very least.
Material Dimensions:
Note materials and dimensions - if masonry, measure and make note of the size of the blocks used. If lap siding, shingle siding, etc. make note of the reveal and material. This will be really helpful if you need to figure out heights if you forget to measure something or just want to verify dimensions. Since reveals can vary on each course, a handy tricks is to measure the height of 10 courses and divide that number by 10 to get a more accurate gauge.
You can see from the photo that 10 courses of this siding is 27 1/8” which is roughly a 2 3/4” reveal per course.
Photos:
Often one of my biggest frustrations when reviewing site visit information is not having enough photos. Anytime I'm on a site visit, I'll leave with hundreds of photos and somehow it's still not enough! There's always some wonky condition that I didn't get a great photo of or I needed a picture just 4 inches to the right. Go out of your way to take more photos than you might think you need from different angles, perspectives, and distances. Nowadays we have awesome smartphones that are capable of high quality photos, panoramas, and even videos! Videos can be especially helpful when walking through the building with an owner or consultant (with permission) so you can take note of what was discussed so you don’t have to take as many notes! I personally prefer to use my iPhone or a small point and shoot* that’s not too heavy and can be easily tucked away when not in use. I once had a project where we had to survey hundreds of windows for a renovation project and most windows were totally different conditions. We needed multiple detail photos of each window. This would've been an almost impossible task to keep track of each individual window but luckily I had a Samsung Note phone with a pen so I was able to take a photo of each window, take a screenshot, and make a note on each photo which window it was. I'm not sure what we would've done otherwise but I was so thankful to have that phone at that moment! We also had a google docs spreadsheet open on my iPad to document information about the windows rather than writing it on paper so we wouldn't have to duplicate our work in transferring written notes to the computer. So in short, I guess I'm saying to make the most of your technology!
Locate Photos:
Mark interesting things on your plans that will make it easier for you or someone else to orient themselves while looking through the photos later. Maybe it's a painting on a wall, a red sweatshirt hanging on a pipe, a stain on the ceiling, etc. but it should be something distinct that will help place tricky conditions in photos on the plans. If you're taking detail photos, remember to step back and take context photos so you can locate them later.
The photo below shows a steel rod tied to the roof rafters which was holding up the 2nd floor of a old home. This was both fascinating and terrifying (since the house needed significant repair) but we needed to be sure to mark the locations of these rods on the plans. This picture is great to see the detail of how the tensile system works but doesn’t help at all in telling us where this rod is located. So on the floor plan I made a note on the plan with a star and a cone (<) showing the direction of the photo, saying something like “steel rod tied to roof structure, tension wheel” and this was really helpful because none of the other pictures of the rods showed the wheel or tensile system and now we knew exactly where it was and what direction we were looking.
Locating pictures on plans is really only necessary in tricky areas like basements, attics, eaves, or in monotonous buildings where a lot of spaces look exactly the alike, so try not to go overboard with this.
BONUS: Tips for You
Backpack:
I recommend carrying a small bag with you while on site visits to hold extra tools and whatever else you may have. I suggest using a small backpack* rather than something like a messenger bag since it wont get in the way.
Snacks:
Maybe I'm the only one who thinks about food constantly, but I always find it's a good idea to keep a couple snacks with me on a site visit. Sometimes things take longer than expected and you don't want to be famished, trying to rush through your survey so you can get a bite to eat. It can't hurt to throw a couple granola bars and a water in your bag, right?
Dress Appropriately:
If it's the middle of winter and you're surveying a building without heat, you're going to want to dress in lot's of warm layers. Be sure to check the weather beforehand so you know if it's supposed to rain (and will need rain gear and umbrella), if it's going to be brutally cold (and need hats, gloves, scarves, lots of layers, etc.), if it's going to be windy (and you need a windbreaker and extra clips to attach papers to your clipboard)... you get the idea
Shoes:
Two things you need to consider about footwear are safety and comfort. You should never wear open toed shoes or high heels to a site visit, there are just too many things that could go wrong. You're probably going to be walking around for hours, sometimes crawling around in icky places, and potentially walking on unstable surfaces or trekking through the mud. Opt for comfortable sneakers or boots.
Good luck on future surveys!

Dehancer is a powerful tool for your color grading, you can get a really nice film look in just a few clicks, this is absolutely amazing.
It’s a plug-in for DaVinci Resolve, Premier or Final Cut.
What is a plug-in?
A plugin, short for «plug-in,» is a software component that adds specific functionality or features to an existing software application. It is designed to be easily installed and integrated with the main application, extending its capabilities without requiring any modifications to the core code.
Plugins are commonly used in various types of software, such as web browsers, content management systems, audio/video editing programs, and graphics design tools. They enable users to customize and enhance the functionality of the software according to their specific needs and preferences.
Typically, plugins are created by third-party developers and distributed separately from the main software application. They often come in the form of dynamically linked libraries, modules, or script files that can be easily loaded and unloaded by the host application. Once installed, the plugin can interact with the application’s APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) and extend its functionality in various ways, such as adding new menu options, tools, filters, effects, or integration with external services.
For example, in a web browser, plugins are used to enable additional features like viewing Flash content, playing multimedia files, or blocking advertisements. In a content management system, plugins can be used to add new functionality like contact forms, social media integration, or search engine optimization tools.
Overall, plugins provide a flexible and modular approach to software development, allowing users to customize their software experience and developers to extend the capabilities of their applications without having to modify the core code.

Shadowrocket iOS 2023
If you're looking for a way to block ads on your iPhone, then you've come to the right place. You can do this by using a software program called Shadowrocket iOS. It works by blocking malicious advertisements on your device based on your user-agent domino pattern. This program will work with any applications that are installed on your device.
Shadowrocket iOS Download and installation
If you are looking for an iOS App which is free to download and install, Shadowrocket iOS is it. This app is a rule-based proxy utility which allows you to browse the web securely and safely.
You can install and use this app on your iOS devices, such as iPhones, iPads, iPods, and so on. This app will help you manage your internet connection, allowing you to bypass websites which aren't accessible in your country or region.
Shadowrocket has a lot of features and functions, enabling you to secure your internet connection, protect your privacy, and even bypass censorship. You can also use it to change the time history of your iOS apps.
The app has a number of other features, allowing you to choose the best possible proxy server. It also comes with multiple servers, so you will never be short of options.
Using the app is relatively simple. You'll need to install it, log in to the client area, and then you'll be ready to go.
To get started, you'll need to download and install the Shadowrocket iOS application from the Apple App Store. Once the download is complete, you'll be able to access the app from your home screen. After this, you'll be able to see a list of approved servers.
When you enter the QR code, the screen will automatically load the details of the selected server. However, it's not as simple as it looks.
To install the app, you'll first need to open the downloaded file. There should be an icon on your home screen which you can tap to launch the app. Next, you'll be prompted to set your password and input your Apple ID.
Captures HTTP/HTTPS/TCP traffic from any applications on your device
Shadowrocket iOS is a nifty little application that helps to capture HTTP/HTTPS/TCP traffic from any applications on your device. Whether it's a website or a game, the app can capture this information and store it in your iPhone or iPad.
The program is free to download. But, you'll need to enable Unknown Sources to ensure that Shadowrocket works with your device. You'll also need to have the right server address and port, and a service connection. Luckily, Shadowrocket has a nice list of proxies available, so it's not difficult to find the ones that you need.
In addition, the app is very easy to set up. To make it easier, you can use an emulator like BlueStacks to run the app on your PC. If you're a Mac user, you can download the program directly from the official site. However, if you're a Windows user, you'll need to install the Visual C++ Redistributable package.
For Windows users, you'll need at least 2GB of free space on your hard drive to install the app. It's worth noting that you'll also need to give it permission to load system extensions.
The software will ask you for a password. It also has a cool feature that measures network speed over WiFi. And, it has a forum where users can discuss their experiences with the app.
Another nice feature of the app is the ability to use a variety of encryption methods. The app supports DNS over TLS and QUIC, and is compatible with cloak and gost plugins.
Although it's not necessarily the most powerful of the bunch, it has a lot of features that you can't get elsewhere. For instance, you can measure your network's speed on WiFi, rewrite URLs, and analyze your handoffs.
Blocks malicious ads based on your user-agent domino pattern
If you are looking for an application that can help you block malicious ads on your iOS device, then you should consider Shadowrocket. This application is free and can be downloaded from the App Store. It is a reliable application that allows users to protect their privacy and internet connection.
This app also allows you to hide your IP address, so you are less likely to become a victim of hackers. You can also customize your adblocker according to your domain and user agent, which will help you stay safe online.
This app is available for PC, Mac and iPhone. It can be easily downloaded and installed. However, you can only use it on devices that are supported by the app.
The app allows you to block advertisements based on the user-agent, domain name, and domino pattern. Moreover, it has an advanced traffic measuring feature. In addition, you can import rule files from your iCloud Drive.
Aside from this, you can also configure proxy servers for different sections of the program. And you can set a timeout for your proxy requests. Also, you can delete unused proxies.
If you live in a country that blocks websites, you can use Shadowrocket to get access to the internet. Not only will this make your browsing secure, but you will also be protected against phishing sites.
This app works on both Wi-Fi and cellular connections. Moreover, it can also monitor the speed of your connection and the bandwidth used.
You can also use Shadowrocket VPN on your PC. But you should ensure that your device has a stable and working internet connection. Additionally, you should install an emulator for your device.
Adds a new server
Shadowrocket is an iOS application. It is designed to make the most of your device's network connectivity. You can use it to reroute traffic through a proxy server. The app also features a multilevel forward proxy, script filter and a slew of other features. If you're looking to secure your privacy and avoid geoblocking, you may want to give it a try.
To start, you'll need to open the app. Once it's open, you'll be greeted with a menu displaying a number of functions. Among them are an overview of the underlying hardware and an ad-hoc VPN configuration. You can add a new server in just a few clicks, but you'll also need to allow the app to access your cellular data.
While you're at it, you should probably check out the bbr add-on. This tidbit allows you to easily create complex VPN configurations without having to do it manually.
Interestingly, the app isn't entirely free, but it's a relative bargain for what you get. Several pricing plans are available, with a range of proxies included. Despite the price tag, you can still request a refund within three days.
In the shadows, you'll find another cool-looking utility, this time a rule-based proxy server client. This app is able to detect and alter the network configuration on your iOS device, enabling you to toggle between various proxies. Although it's not entirely free, you can download it for free from the App Store. Whether or not you decide to purchase it, you should at least test it out to see if it really works.
If you're looking for a good all-rounder, it's worth checking out the offerings from Terraform Security Group. These providers have a wide variety of servers, with a fair number of global ones, including the US and Europe.
Shadowrocket iOS Latest version
The latest version of Shadowrocket iOS is available for download. This app is a rule-based proxy utility client that routes all Internet traffic through a proxy server. It is free to use and protects your privacy.
In addition to iOS, the application also works on Android devices. Users can download and install the app from the App Store or the Google Play store.
The app has a scannable QR code on its screen. However, this feature may not work for all users. To access it, you must take a screenshot of the code.
This app is a great way to keep your identity anonymous when browsing in China. The app offers a wide range of features and supports cellular connections. For more information, check out the website.
You can also download Shadowrocket iOS on your PC. The app supports a number of operating systems, including Windows, Mac, and Linux. The app can be installed using an emulator.
Once the application is installed, users can subscribe to multiple proxies. They can choose which one they prefer for their own needs. If a subscription is not desired, users can unsubscribe at any time.
When installing the application, users can select an HTTPS proxy server. The application will ask for an Apple ID and password. Some countries prohibit the usage of Shadowrocket iOS.
In order to use the app, users must have a stable internet connection. Additionally, Shadowrocket may not be compatible with all iOS devices. There are also reports of problems with the VPN. If you have any issues, report them in the comment box.
Although it can be downloaded from the App Store, the application is not recommended for prolonged use.
