Otakon has announced that voice actor Shuichiro Umeda will be a guest at its upcoming convention. He is the voice of Chirinu Nio in Blue Miburo, which will be screened at Otakon 2024. Senpai Is An Otokonoko Episode 1 Review - A Queer-Coded Romcom

What is an ‘otokonoko’? According to some sites, it’s a Japanese term for men who express themselves femininely. Are they trans? Are they a crossdresser? That’s something to figure out for yourself. Because of the ambiguity regarding Makoto’s gender, I’m going to use they/them pronouns when talking about them.

Regardless, Senpai Is An Otokonoko seems to be a romcom story that talks about sexuality, gender and conformity as Makoto Hanaoka is a boy who dresses up as a girl, but only does it at school. Saki Aoi is a girl who fell for Makoto, originally believing them to be a girl, but when they tell her the truth, Saki gets excited knowing that she can like both the boy and the girl versions of them. Congrats on the sudden bisexual awakening? Anyways, Saki is still insistent on pursuing Makoto, so she does whatever she can to make sure she becomes their first love. The only obstacle in her way is their childhood friend, Ryuji Taiga, who is protective of them, but also has a crush on them.

Is this BL? Yuri? I’d say that it is more of a queer-coded story. Makoto clearly likes dressing femininely; Saki is bisexual; Ryuji is gay. Nobody here is straight, not even Makoto. However, I do like it shows the positives and negatives of these kinds of stories. There are people who are accepting of Makoto’s crossdressing like Saki and Ryuji, but there are those who still find it hard to take in like some of Makoto’s classmates and even one of their teachers. However, I do like that the story is not written to make Makoto a joke, but to make them a serious character with internal issues of their own. I’d love to know what caused him to start crossdressing in the first place as its only hinted that he always liked cute things since he was little, but couldn’t lavish in them due to his household being super strict. Why is it that the school allows him to dress like this and why does he have a special locker in the storage room? I’d love to know these types of details.

The visuals are pretty! I seriously love both of Makoto designs! The girl design is beautiful! I love the hair color of their wig! I also like Makoto’s boy design. They may look like a regular boy, but they have a cute and pretty face that helps them stand out from the rest. Ryuji also looks nice with the parted hair and the hoop earrings. Saki also looks so cute with her short bobbed hair! They’re all rather simple designs, but they’re eye-catching!

The characters are fun because they’re in a friendly love triangle. Makoto is a nice person who’s filled with mysteries regarding their actions. I still like that they’re brave to keep crossdressing at school, even if everyone won’t be accepting of it. Saki is so chaotic, but I do like her earnest heart. She’s so bold, which is what Makoto probably needs in his life. Ryuji is also a nice guy but a little overprotective. I do like that he does whatever he can to protect Makoto from weirdos who look at him oddly, but he gets shy whenever the topic of him liking Makoto pops up.

The voice acting is really nice! I’ve never heard Shuichiro Umeda’s performance before, but he has a very cute voice that is perfect for a role like this. Akira Sekine voices another chaotic girl in Saki after voicing the chaos that was Sora Harewataru from Hirogaru Sky Precure. Yuma Uchida plays Ryuji Taiga, making this character the second gay boy he’s voicing this season after Hisashi from Twilight Out of Focus; he’s on a roll with these LGBT characters.

I guess my only gripe is that the art style shifts a lot from the usual to the comical ones that it’s sort of hard to get used to the sudden back and forth. I think it happens way too often that I’m mentioning this. Not that it’s bad but sometimes, it does get a little annoying.

I think people who still struggle with their identity might find some solace in this cute queer-coded story. I wasn’t sure what I was for a long time until I realize that I am most likely pansexual. Yes, this is the first time I reveal my sexuality on this blog, but it’s just a secret that I won’t ever tell anyone in real life because it’s my identity and life; I’m the only one who gets to decide how to live it, after all. For me, gender doesn’t matter; I love people however they are. I honestly can’t wait to see what sort of story this will turn out to be. What are your thoughts on this episode?

    The official website for the Shikomori’s Not Just a Cutie anime unveiled a brand new trailer for the upcoming release of the anime, which is scheduled to premiere on April 9.

    The Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie TV anime is directed by Ryota Itoh and features animation production by Doga Kobo. The series was originally scheduled to broadcast in Japan on Asahi Broadcasting Corporation and TV Asahi beginning on April 02, 2022, but it is now scheduled to begin broadcasting on April 09, 2022.

  The original Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie manga by Keigo Maki is serialized in Kodansha's Manga Pocket digital manga magazine, and an English language version is published in the United States by Kodansha USA.

  Crunchyroll announced at Anime NYC that the series will stream in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and CIS when the series airs in April, and describes the series as such:

La nuova avventura fantasy firmata Kakeru Kobashiri andrà in onda dalla prossima primavera.

L’anime ci riporterà nel mondo magico di di “Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho” (Grimoire of Zero), ma la nuova avventura firmata da Kakeru Kobashiri sarà realizzata da TEZUKA PRODUCTIONS (Girlfriend, Girlfriend, Adachi to Shimamura).

A dirigere l’adattamento c’è Satoshi Kuwabara (Adachi to Shimamura, The Quintessential Quintuplets), che si occupa anche di supervisionarne la sceneggiatura. Alla scrittura partecipano anche Mayumi Morita (Dagashi Kashi 2, Girlfriend, Girlfriend) e l’autore stesso della novel. Il design dei personaggi, invece, sta venendo curato da Reina Iwasaki.

You might remember Mario was casted as Mercutio in the musical "Romeo and Juliet" in 2019, making his debut in Toho productions with this role.

This time he got a role in this work again, and he is going to play Romeo! His dream to play the main role of Shakespeare's work is coming true, I'm really happy for him. :')

REVIEW | "Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie" | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade

Imagine being born with the worst luck imaginable. You always miss the bus by mere seconds, cars splash puddles on your new clothes, and you inadvertently get involved in a ball game when said ball bonks you right in the noggin! That’s the deal with Izumi (Shuichiro Umeda), who’s had a nonstop string of bad luck since birth. Luckily, he’s got a girlfriend in Shikimori (Saori Onishi), whom — as the anime’s title dictates — isn’t just a mere beauty.

Based on the manga by Keigo Maki, Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie follows Izumi and Shikimori as they grow as both people and a couple. Where Izumi’s doing his best to be more bold, Shikimori attempts to shake off her cool factor in favor of something more “lady-like”. With friends Inuzaka (Nobuhiko Okamoto), Nekozaki (Misato Matsuoka), and Hachimitsu (Rina Hidaka), the two work their way to being as best as couple as they can. What follows is a tale not just of young love, but also of learning to accept the qualities one has as a human being.

When the show begins, viewers immediately grow accustomed to the aspects of Izumi and Shikimori. Despite his shoddy luck, Izumi is the type of guy who puts on a brave and confident face. Meanwhile, Shikimori is adored by her classmates not just by her beauty, but also her slick attitude. But when the two of them are together, they become a nervous wreck that wants to do all that they can to make the other person happy. However, when Izumi’s bad luck shifts into gear, Shikimori shakes that coyness off and kicks that unluckiness to the curb (sometimes literally!).

But as Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie shows, these two are still high schoolers that are dealing with many kinds of emotions. It’s funny seeing Shikimori become jealous of the way Inuzuka hangs around Izumi like a big brother. Meanwhile, Izumi becomes flustered just thinking of his girlfriend, in ways that bring out a childlike adorableness to his outer shell. What makes it entertaining is the way everyone’s aware of how silly these two are, with Hachimitsu’s blunt observations being one of the anime’s big highlights.

Svelati cast e staff della serie animata tratta dalla commedia romantica di Keigo Maki. 

Il sito ufficiale di “Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san” (Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie) ha svelato delle prime immagini e alcuni nuovi dettagli sulla serie animata ispirata all’omonimo manga scritto e illustrato da Keigo Maki.

Da quanto annunciato, l’anime andrà in onda da aprile 2022 e sta venendo diretto da Ryota Ito (My Senpai Is Annoying) presso lo studio DOGA KOBO (Asteroid in Love, Sing "Yesterday" for Me). Come assistente alla regia troviamo Shohei Yamanaka (direttore d’episodio in Dropout Idol Fruit Tart), mentre la sceneggiatura sta venendo supervisionata da Yoshimi Narita (My Senpai Is Annoying). Il character design, invece, ste venendo curato da Ai Kikuchi (New Game!, How heavy are the dumbbells you lift?).

Izumi e Shikimori sono due giovani liceali appena fidanzatisi. Si tengono per mano mentre tornano a casa da scuola, flirtano nei corridoi, si prendono giocosamente in giro l’uno con l’altra.   Directing Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie will be Ryota Ito (My Senpai Is Annoying), with Shohei Yamanaka (Dropout Idol Fruit Tart episode director) helping them out as the sub-director, Yoshimi Narita (My Senpai Is Annoying) as the series composer, and Ai Kikuchi (How heavy are the dumbbells you lift?) drawing the character designs, all at Doga Kobo.

  Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie started as a Twitter manga that gained over a million likes on the platform before being picked up by Kodansha's Magazine Pocket. Kodansha USA releases the series in English with the first volume being released on October 27, 2020. Kodansha describes Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie as such:

  Shikimori and Izumi are high school sweethearts. They hold hands walking home from school, they flirt in the halls, they tease each other. But Shikimori knows what she wants, and how to get it, and she can turn from cutie to cool in an instant.

  Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie is set to premiere in April 2022.
