Grimoire of Zero was a perfectly decent anime. "It would have been so good if it was good" but it actually was kind of good. Definitely a bit rough. But short enough that I don't feel my tine was wasted on it and I quickly grew to enjoy the characters.

I wish they had focused more on the romance between Zero and Mercenary, I think both the story and characters would have been a lot stronger for it.

But for my full honesty; I mainly watched it because Mercenary looks cool as hell. Big ol' muscly snow leopard beast-man who beneath his rough and mean facade is a caring, yet wary from being shunned or even hunted, fellow. like all he wants to do is run a small-town tavern, but because of his curse he's been forced into solitude and hunting witches to make a living.

Throwing my thoughts here. So I just watched Grimoire of Zero and I love the Mercenary because he's a kind-hearted bug ball of fluff. I like his character, putting the shells around his heart because he grew with rejections everywhere.

And guess what. The character I love is Albus. I was so interested that 'he' was just a naive boy with a good heart and good intention. And a short temper, hot-headed kind of brat that would jump into danger when it came to his important people. But then he was a girl. But that doesn't stop me from liking her (and my ship, Mercenary/Albus hehe. Not even the sequel would stop me from shipping them)

Albus is a nice character, one that has a potential to be a hero. She might have the typical main character traits with the goal to fight injustice against witches (in the world where humans hunt witches) BUT but she doesn't hate humans. All she hates is the humans full of hatred and ill will. She loves peace, she loves all the creatures equally. All she wants to fight is evil.

She is the typical hot-headed, short-tempered girl who isn't afraid to show her values, to stand on her own feet. She can't stand people badmouthing the ones she knows good, and that brings her troubles. She isn't afraid to fight for the weak, and fight for the truth.

Truly, I fell in love with her.

But, like any children, she also wants to be selfish. She has wishes. She wants to sit on Mercenary's shoulder because Zero gets to sit on it. And she loves how soft Mercenary's fur. I love that she has innocence of a child.

And seeing how hard the path she had to take.

She lost her parents because of witch-hunters. Her father was a human and was killed too along with her mother.

She lost her grandma who raised her.

She was so frustrated with the world that she chose to run away from home and from Holdem so that she could pursue world's peace. For humans and witches to live together in peace. Because she lost her family because of the hatred living inside human's heart.

But that doesn't make her hate humans. She just hates the evil hearts. She wants peace. She doesn't even think about revenge because humans killed her family.

She only wants peace.

And that her heart of gold was what captured my attention.

Also, her character developments, especially with Mercenary.

She was the one who wanted to kill Mercenary so that her sorcery skills could increase. It was started from enemy, then bloomed into friends.

I really love the relationship development between Mercenary and Albus. They really speak enemies-to-friends. And in my headcanon, friends-to-lovers. I love how Mercenary grows soft on her after the journey with her. I could literally capture the developments, and that's what captured my heart.

(Yeah, I know that Mercenary is bound with Zero. But then again, canon doesn't stop me from shipping Mercenary and Albus. And Zero/Thirteen. Do you see how much Thirteen actually cares about Zero, even though they once turned enemies? How Thirteen stopped the guards from hurting Mercenary because that would also hurt Zero? How Thirteen put Zero in a cozy room on the high tower like a princess? Yes. Zero x Thirteen forever!)

[This is before Albus is revealed as a girl, thus she is still known as a boy]

Mercenary is back from his mission gathering information along with Zero and Albus. They got back to the city right at dawn. The soldiers on the gate greeted them, snickering at how they were covered by muds.

"Ah, Mercenary, having good times with your slaves?" one of the soldiers threw a mocking stare at the white tiger.

"WHA--" Mercenary suddenly blushed hard and stuttered. Zero was undisturbed and Albus tried to hide his blush.

"So, Mercenary, which one you like better?" another soldier continued teasing the frigid Mercenary.

"Aah, personally I like this white-haired lady. She's so graceful but cute at the same time~" a soldier piped in, fidgeting and throwing heart-eyes to the undisturbed Zero.

"Oh! I like this little blond, so cute, look at these cheeks~" another soldier pinched Albus's cheeks with his gloved hands. Albus yelped in pain because the soldier unconsciously pinched too hard.

And suddenly, the soldier felt tremendous pain on his hands that he screamed in pain.

"Ahh!!! What---!!"

"Don't lay your filthy hands on him." It was Mercenary who snatched the soldier's hands away and now he's gripping them.

"I'm sorry!! I'm sorry!!! Please don't break my hands!!" the soldier trembled in fear.

"Mercenary, enough, let him go." Zero spoke the first time.

"Ah," Mercenary tossed the soldier away, "this is your first and final warning, Soldier."

"Mercenary..." Albus stared at the white tiger, who was now crouching in front of him.

"Are you okay, Albus?" Mercenary stroked Albus's cheeks gently with his palms. The boy still had baby fat filling those cheeks.

No wonder that lowly soldier went his way to fondle them.

"I'm fine...thank you," Albus spontaneously leaned into Mercenary's big hands.

"Let's go back and have dinner," Zero tugged at Mercenary.

They walked away from the frightened soldiers and went back to the inn.
