Since I like making bad decisions that drive myself insane, I sewed my own wedding dress. It almost killed me, honestly. I'm soooo glad it turned out well, and in the end I was so happy with it, but DANG.
It started as a bustier dress, with boning and underwires, but I hated that a ton. So that got covered up by a bodice and the bustier top became an interior supportive corset lol. The skirt is just a silk shantung circle skirt, with a petticoat underneath and an overskirt made of tulle. I had to add homemade padding in a few places in order to improve fit, too. Stitching everything on top and figuring out how to arrange the lace and flowers took WEEKS.
Materials include: Silk shantung in Abalone from Silk Baron, a bunch of ivory silk organza I found at the thrift store, random cotton fabric from my stash, at least 15 yards of tulle in various colors, silver corded lace I cut out and appliqued on by hand, dozens of fake flowers I hot glued to small pieces of craft felt and appliqued on by hand, organza flowers appliqued on by hand, and several pieces were made from my spouse's grandmother's wedding dress which was made of ivory silk shantung. Plus even more random notions and handmade bias tape and stuff lol.

So I think I forgot to post about it here but I'm knitting my own wedding dress.
Edit to add materials: I'm using suri silk alpaca (apparently I'm slightly allergic to mohair?), and glass beads for the silvery and pearl beads.

“The fabric came first: it dictated the shape of the gown, as is sometimes the case. This is an incredible fabric and extemely variable in photographs. From strip light to halogen bulb, theatre lights to natural sunshine, this mecurial fabric changes in colour and tone over and over again. I have found on five separate occasions that if I just leave a roll of it in the corner of a room during a consultation it proves irresistable to a client. Two chose it for an entire wedding gown, one for an evening dress, one for a tutu, and one insisted on it for the stomacher of her gold gown- determined to use it in some small way!”

Would you like to hear the cutest story of all time?
Tumblr media
My great grandmother, born in the 1880s, met her dream man when she was 16. She lived in a small town in Texas. He proposed, but she really wanted to go to high school and her town was so small, she would have to go to a boarding school. She was afraid she would have to choose between her education and getting married to him, but he supported her, and waited for her! But before she left, he asked her to sit on his lap for a kiss. She was 5’ and he was 6’4”. (He called her Dolly.) She agreed as long as he didn’t ask again until she came back. She writes in her journal she regretted asking him to wait for another lap kiss! She went to high school, graduated, they got married, and she sat on his lap again on their wedding night. This is all recorded in her journals.
Lap sitting is still so sweet. Seeing the Joel lap sitting fics reminded me of my great grandparents (on my dad’s side.)
