I was looking into cat genetics and learning about Sunshine (corin gold) and goldenSib.

The messybeast article I read started out saying Sunshine was a WbSib thing. Basically the wideband gene. But then later said that it wasn't and that was GoldenSib instead. with Sunshine having no wideband gene and just being Corin only.

But I tried looking into it and many websites just mention it being WbSib. Messybeast is usually very accurate, so maybe the info was outdated? As old articles shown by messybeast thought it was too, until later, studies said otherwise.

So I'm confused, what is the current consensus- is sunshine and goldenSib seperate? Is Sunshine the WbSib gene or not? I know Sunshine is Corin at least XD Also bimetallic is still sunshine + silver tabby right? Aka. Corin Silver?

As far as i know, sunshine is considered a wideband color, but on a seperate gene (Corin) than the 'traditional' golden (found in persians and more). And yes, bimetal is corin golden aka sunshine + inhibitor silver.

I think the part of the article which mentions goldensib is a little older, since it talks about sunshine as an unidentified mutation. (Messybeast often leaves outdated or disproven texts up, but usually notes them as 'earlier theories' or something). I got the impression that goldensib is used for non-corin widebanded siberians. Siberian breeders often use the term golden (and the code y) for their cats, unfortunately sometimes for sunshines too, but i think it's very likely that not corin-based goldens are also present in the breed.

So the assumed wideband genes, unfortunately both are usually denoted by wb:

Gene 1: Corin. Three identified mutations, two in siberians (wbSIB - sunshine, wbESIB - extreme sunshine) and one in british shorthair (wbBSH - copper). Mutations are recessive to wild type. Silver makes bimetal.

Gene(s) 2: Unknown. No identified mutation, probably several exists among all the breeds where golden is present. Generally dominant. Silver makes shaded silver tabby.

For those not in the loop, sunshine in Siberian cats has recently been mapped to the CORIN gene, the same one that causes golden tabby tigers. An additional allele, extreme sunshine, has also been identified. And, "copper" phenotype golden British Shorthairs have been identified to have yet another mutation! All of these are recessive to the standard phenotypes.

Color Descriptions

Standard Golden - Found most famously in British Shorthairs, but also present in other breeds. It is a black-based tabby with the background color being golden and the markings being their normal black-based color. It also comes in shaded and tipped varieties, where we get less and less of the residual black-based markings.

Sunshine - Found in Siberians. Looks very similar to golden, but the hair is always pale to the root and they lack the dark nose rim found in most tabbies. Visible difference between those homozygous for agouti (standard sunshine), and those carrying solid (dark sunshine).

Extreme Sunshine - Sunshine with minimal markings, similar to the golden tipped phenotype.

Copper - Found in BSHs. Goes by several other names at this point, but I have consistently used copper so that's what I'm sticking with. It is golden tipped with almost no residual black, and the underside of the cat may become very pale.

Gene Symbols

The researchers have decided to use the symbol wb for CORIN, but I strongly disagree with this. "Wide band" has long been used as the name of the trait causing standard golden and silver shaded and tipped phenotypes, and has been generally accepted to be polygenic for some time. Some people still choose to use Wb for standard golden as though it is incomplete dominant, or else use symbols such as Wb+, Wb++ to track it. Even though CORIN causes "wide banding", it is distinct from the existing concept of the wide band trait.

What gives me the authority to coin a new gene symbol? Well, I've done it before when I needed to (Bengal Modifier is my doing) and people don't seem to mind. I don't expect it to catch on with researchers, but hopefully I can provide a nice alternative for breeders and hobbyists.

G is a nice candidate since it can stand for golden, and it's not currently in use for any cat genes. It was previously used for Birman gloving, but since that has been mapped to KIT, gloving now shares a locus with white spotting and dominant white. It's in my interest to keep any subscripts and superscripts short, since I can't use them in the dropdowns in my calculators and guarantee they'll be readable to everyone. So I want the symbols to be as short and clear in plaintext as possible.

For now, I'm going with G > gsh > ge > gc, corresponding to the currently used sequence WB > wbSIB > wbeSIB > wbBSH. Proper writing of all these is technically subscripts, but I usually end up leaving symbols as plaintext in my writings for readability. The dominance hierarchy of the lower alleles is based only on phenotype, and only exists because I need to have some order for them.

G- : No mutation. Still may be standard golden if they have high wide banding polygenes.

gshgsh : Sunshine.

gshge : Intermediate between sunshine and extreme sunshine, as they are confirmed to be codominant.

gshgc, gegc : Mystery phenotypes, may never be combined since sunshine and copper are both breed-exclusive as of now. When I add them to the calculator (soon!), I'll simply note them as "sunshine-copper" and "extreme sunshine-copper".

Pedigreed, pure-blooded, exotic breeds are catdom’s elite. Valued by exhibitors, or “the fancy,” no cat looks fancier than the Persian. Long glossy hair in 20 recognized colors, each color with a specific eye hue, gives the Persian a look of haughty languor. The standard for Persians calls for a chunky build, low on legs, deep in chest, massive across shoulders and rump.

Here Voo Doo, the Black Persian grand champion owned by cat judge Richard Gebhardt exhibits the qualities demanded for the head... Voo Doo’s expression here belies his gentle disposition. Unlike most males, the seven-year-old cat is devoted to his kittens and takes an active hand in helping their mothers raise them.

Chinchilla Persians achieve an aristocratic look with pure-white coats so subtly tipped in black as to seem silver. Black rims accent blue-green eyes, lips, and nose, whose center is brick red. Tail should be “carried without a curve,” says the standard. “But,” counters the author, “the man doesn’t live who can tell a cat how her tail should behave.”

Siamese

Lithe and sinuous body in two-tone color, wedge-shaped head, and bright blue eyes distinguish the Siamese. The C.F.A. standard recognizes four colors -- Seal (black-brown), Blue, Chocolate, and Lilac -- for the points... Red points are also recognized by other associations.

These Seal Points, exhibiting the most popular color, show eyes conforming to the standard: “Almond shaped and slanting... in true Oriental fashion.”

Blue Point Siamese, grand champion Jezebelle, wears a  coat of bluish white with points of the same shade of “definite blue, giving strong contrast of divided color.”

Lilac Point Siamese, champion Tai Shan, requires, for perfection, a body color of “glacial white.” Points, says the standard, should be “frosty gray with pinkish tone. Foot pads... mauve.”

Himalayan

Champion Goforth Tiara (right) and Blue Point Siamese differ in length of hair and color of masks. Seal Point Himalayan, a cross between Persian and Siamese, must show “conformation the same as for Longhairs,” says the standard. But it must also reveal “color and points the same as for Siamese, with the same color classes.”

Burmese

Mother and kittens reveal the Burmese to be compact and muscular... Their eyes glow a deep gold. Green eyes are a fault and blue eyes “outrageous enough to disqualify the cat”... The unique and wonderful color of the Burmese is a “rich, warm sable brown.” Coat is short, lies close, has a glossy sheen and satiny texture, Fastest growing in popularity among the Shorthairs, the Burm commands a handsome price.

Russian Blue

“Texture and appearance of the coat are the truest criteria of the Russian Blue,” says the standard in consideration of the fact that this cat’s fur is unlike that of any other breed and, in fact, closely resemble sealskin. Like seal, the Blue’s coat is short, thick, and very fine. It feels silky and has a distinct sheen.

Here Grigio, a Blue once owned by the photographer, exhibits the required broad face with nose longer than the Persian but shorter than the Siamese. Vivid green eyes are set wide apart and appear round, rather than almond shaped. Young cats have yellow eyes, which change with time... A highly intelligent cat, Grigio enjoyed jumping from one high stool to another in a graceful, arcing leap. Sometimes Mr. Chandoha held a hoop between the two stools, and the cat sailed through it. The performance made it appear that the owner had trained his Blue. “But that wasn’t true,” says Mr. Chandoha. “I just added the props for Grigio’s own act.” One day Grigio walked off the farm and disappeared from Chandoha’s life.

Abyssinian

A breed fast growing in popularity, the Abyssinian has been known for less than a century; England saw its first pair following a British campaign in Ethiopia in 1868.

These kitten exhibit coats that resemble those of wild rabbits. From a distance, the fur looks brown but actually is ticked... Kittens’ small neat feet make them appear to be standing on tiptoe, as the standard demands. Both wear a necklace of color high on the chest, a marking that is now being bred out of the blood line. If a necklace exists, it must show a break at the throat. Some ambitious exhibitors... “have been known to pluck hairs, to powder, dye, stain, or bleach out a necklace to meet standard.” Bars on the legs of these cats would also be considered a fault.

Manx

Lack of tail distinguishes the Manx. As the standard makes clear, “Tail-lessness must be absolute... There should be a decided hollow at the end of the backbone where, in the ordinary cat, a tail would begin.” The rump should be as round as a ball and supported by hind legs that are longer than the front one.

Grand champion Pola was the first White Manx to win that title. All colors are recognized for the breed, but they must be worn in a double coat.

Rex

Marcel waves rippling across the body and tail give this cat its unusual appearance. Although the Cat Fanciers’ Association has yet to recognize Rex, other groups have proclaimed it a breed and set up standards. The wavy coat should be the “texture of velvet pile,” and the head should exhibit a “Roman profile.” Ears should be “large and naked, set high on the head.”

A spontaneous mutation, the Rex is a one-in-a-million oddity found among Domestic Shorthair kittens. One was discovered in England, another in East Berlin. Both strains now are being bred in the United States. There are very few of them so far, however, and experts feel it will be years before they are well established.

The british breed and the wide band genes

Since both wide band genes are losing right know, I decided to make a farewell post for them. (I don't mind them losing, i myself voted against both of them lol. But here and here are the links if anyone wants to try to change that.)

Although I dubbed them persian and siberian wide band, since those are their "signature breeds" for me (this isn't real breeder's terminology), golden cats can be found in several breeds.

In british shorthair (and longhair), golden is very popular and desired color. The interesting thing is that the breed clearly possesses both wb genes: while (to my understanding) most golden british cats have the persian wide band allele, and the siberian (CORIN) variant is significantly less common, it certainly exists: there's an allele written down specifically from british shorthair (wbBRI). The phenotype has lots of names: copper, akita, flaxen, ice peach or even sunshine, like in siberians. I believe copper is the most accepted term.

This kitten is a heterozygote for the CORIN gene: a carrier of copper, which is a recessive trait. But it's still golden: this means he shows the other wide band gene's effects. (This is why i'm a little wary with using the terms i mentioned above: i think most of them actually means the combination of the two wb genes.)

copper + lightning gene according to the breeder. (She tests her cats for CORIN, so i think this means this cat is wbBRIwbBRI for sure.) For me this look is very similar to bimetallic, and this cattery does have silver shaded cats therefore both the inhibitor and the persian wide band is in the gene pool; i think this could be the inhibitor added to both wide band genes. (But I'm no expert in these colors, and just guessing based on few pictures.)
