STOP THE NZ GOVERNMENT'S WAR ON NATURE
Just when you thought they'd hit rock bottom, the National/Act/NZ First coalition government keeps digging. The fast-track approvals bill was released last month and forms the latest part of the government's war on nature. This would allow major infrastructure and industry projects such as mining, road construction and large-scale aquaculture to be fast-tracked if they are considered to be regionally or nationally significant. While I completely agree that the current Resource Management Act consenting process is not fit for purpose, its regulations are stringent for a reason - to protect our climate, our indigenous biodiversity and our whenua. We need development in New Zealand to be sustainable, and to focus more on nature-based solutions. This legislation is taking our country in the wrong direction. It's not the fast-track it's the wrong track!
Lack of consideration for environmental damage: This project requires the economic benefits of a project to be considered above all else. In the midst of intersecting climate and biodiversity crises, we should prioritize protecting the habitats we have left and supporting efforts to restore ecosystems.
Lack of regulation against negative human health impacts: Even if you're not a nature lover like me, we can probably all agree that exposure to carcinogenic chemicals and other toxins, dangerous pollution in outdoor recreation areas such as rivers and beaches, and air pollution are things that no New Zealander wants. This bill does not exclude projects and activities that will have a negative impact on human health.
Lack of transparency: There are already many projects earmarked for fast tracking under Schedule 2A of this bill, but this list has not been published, meaning a fast-tracked project could be coming to a place near you soon, and you'd have no idea until after the bill has passed. Details about the process for project selection and review are scarce.
Undemocratic: Rather than going through the full submission process, projects are sent straight to a panel to be reviewed. This means that local people and conservation groups won't get to have their say on projects that will directly affect them and the work they do. This is a blatant overreach of central government into local affairs, from a government who criticized Three Waters because they thought it took too much decision-making ability away from the regions.
Risks of corruption and conflict of interest: The expert panels do not get the final say of which projects are approved; they can be overridden by any of these three ministers: Simeon Brown (Minister for Energy and Transport), Chris Bishop (Minister for Infrastructure) and Shane Jones (Minister for Oceans & Fisheries, Resources and Regional Development). Having one person make these calls presents a much greater risk of conflicts of interest occurring (and let's be honest, this is quite a risk).
Submissions on this bill are open until April 19th, and there are templates online you can use to make a submission if you're pressed for time. My favourites are from the Forest & Bird (the organization I volunteer with) and the Environmental Defence Society (linked below). You can also write to your local MP and let them know you DO NOT support this bill.

The Journeys of Paul the Apostle
The journeys of Paul the Apostle, as the New Testament relates in the Book of Acts, started with his conversion experience on the way to Damascus, after which instead of seeking to thwart the growing Christian movement, he helped spread it. His four journeys by land and sea across great lengths of the Mediterranean and over vast expanses of land in Asia and Europe totaled over an estimated 16,000 km (10,000 mi).
The Journeys of Paul the Apostle, c. 55 CE
Simeon Netchev (CC BY-NC-ND)
Paul's First Missionary Journey
After persecution in Jerusalem, Antioch was one of the places to which Christians fled, and it was from there Paul began his first missionary journey. Annexed by Pompey the Great in 64 CE and made the Roman provincial capital of Syria, with an estimated population of 250,000, Antioch was one of the primary cities of the East, along with Alexandria and Constantinople. Located at the northeast end of the Mediterranean on the Persian Royal Road, Antioch benefited from its location at the end of the Silk Road and its proximity to Greece, Anatolia, and Italy. As Hughs and Jones mention, not only was "its wealth derived from being a center of civil, military, and later ecclesiastical administration of much of the Near East but also from its position on the commercial road from Asia to the Mediterranean" (103).
Besides its own wine and olive oil production and as a center for the fulling of cloth products, silk from China, lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, dye-works from the Levant, and weaved silk from Damascus could all have found their way through Antioch for distribution throughout the northern Mediterranean areas. As it lay on the Orontes River and at the edge of a fertile plain, Antioch communicated commercially with the harbor of Seleucia 26 km (16 mi) downstream on the Mediterranean. As common travelers in ancient times hitched their rides on merchant vessels, the water portion of Paul's trip was aboard a cargo ship performing trade transactions. Thus, it was at Seleucia that Paul boarded a cargo ship to the province of Asia, stopping at the island of Cyprus.
Cyprus, with a prominent location at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, was also known for its wine and olive oil production. A scenario for trade would have been a combination of Eastern goods loaded alongside refined and agricultural products accumulated at Antioch. Then, with a stop at Cyprus for partial distribution, Cyprus' products would have been added for final distribution in Asia.
With fellow evangelist Barnabas and Barnabas' nephew, John Mark, Paul first landed at Salamis on the eastern end of Cyprus after leaving the port city of Seleucia and sailing west toward Asia. Like with many of his subsequent stops, Paul first visited the local synagogue, attempting a conversion of the Jews to Christianity. From Salamis, heading west, walking nearly the length of Cyprus, Paul and Barnabas came to Paphos, their point of departure for Asia. At Paphos, the proconsul Sergius Paulus would become a convert.
Paul the Apostle's First Missionary Journey (c. 46-48 CE)
Simeon Netchev (CC BY-NC-ND)
Heading to Asia from Cyprus, Paul's ship stopped at Perga in Pamphylia, in southwestern Turkey today. From Perga, John Mark departed for Jerusalem as Paul and Barnabas pressed on into Asia. At their first stop in Antioch of Pisidia, at the synagogue, Paul preached the history of Israel as he weaved in the story of John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth, said to be a descendant of David, as the resurrected Savior, son of God. Though Paul and Barnabas initially gained Jewish and Gentile converts, a faction of opposing Jews expelled them from the city.
At Iconium, with similarly mixed results on learning of a plot to kill them, Paul went on to Lystra. As many in Lystra were worshipers of gods and their idols, Paul preached they should turn from worshiping "things" to worshiping the "living God" (Acts 14:15). When some hostile Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over, both groups stoned Paul. Thinking he was dead, they dragged Paul to the outskirts of the city. When some brethren came to retrieve the body, remarkably Paul had recovered and went back into town. The next day, Paul traveled east for Derbe. With his mission ending on a more positive note, large numbers rallied at Derbe to Paul's message. Deciding to head home, retracing their steps through Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, after appointing elders in each church, the apostles went on to Perga; then, after preaching there a bit, they boarded a ship for a short junket west to the port city of Attallia, then from there they sailed back to Seleucia, then traveled up along the Orontes to Antioch.

Simeon Solomon - Habet! In the Coliseum (1865)
A group of richly-attired Roman women lean from the balustrade overlooking an amphitheater in antiquity. Down below the crowd bays for the blood of one of the fighters as they watch the gladiatorial combat amid the dust and gore. The cry of Habet! (He is hit!) echoes around as the women make the decision whether to slay the vanquished gladiator or allow him to live. The women's reactions vary from the anguish of the girl who has fainted in a pallid swoon, the horror of another who rushes forward with animated wide-eyed expression, the pity of the woman on the far left whose brow is furrowed with concern and the blood-lust of the golden-haired woman who is making a gesture that suggests that she wants to see the gladiator killed. She is clutching a golden serpent necklace at her throat and showing her white teeth in an animalistic expression which many critics noted as being symbolic of a cold heart and a lust for violence. Swinburne suggested that this figure captures 'the ferocity of blondes' but she was probably intended to represent vanity and the fashion in the Imperial period for dyeing hair. Her expression seems to also reflect a sensuous admiration of the sweaty physicality of the half-naked gladiators. The most enigmatic expression is that in the face of the central figure who seems to be still considering her verdict. She is bedecked in ornate gold jewellery and has an inlaid box in front of her from which she has perhaps been throwing jewelled favours to her favourite combatants. Behind these bejewelled patrician women is a gaunt and melancholic servant-woman fanning her mistress with peacock feathers -symbolic of the decadence and vanity of the main protagonists in this orgy of lascivious cruelty. This quiet and contemplative servant seems weary of the horrors she is witnessing, unable or unwilling to lift her eyes to the scene that she has seen so many times in every aspect of her dominated life. She is as downtrodden as the gladiators, a victim of the cruelty of the rich. The only innocent and unsuspecting face among the crowd is a little girl whose mother seems to be about to pull her away from the horror that is unfolding.
The model for the slave-girl was Fanny Eaton, a woman from Jamaica whose mother was a former slave in a sugar plantation. She also modelled for Solomon's The Mother of Moses of 1860 (Delaware Art Gallery, Wilmington) and for one of the women in the background of Rossetti's The Beloved (Tate). The model for the blonde woman strongly resembles Emma Mary Jones, a professional model who is known to have posed for Solomon at this time and who is best-known as Frederick Sandys' mistress and model for pictures like Proud Maisie (Christie's London, 16 June 2015, lot 18) and Love's Shadow (Sotheby's New York, 5 May 2011, lot 69) which similarly show aggressive femininity. A recent poll suggests that the average pastor stays at his church for only around 6 years. But that hardly seems long enough to be truly effective.
In times past, pastoral tenure was typically measured in decades—when the longevity of men like John Calvin (who ministered in Geneva for 25 years until he died), Charles Simeon (who served in Cambridge for over 50 years), John Stott (who pastored in London for over 50 years), Jonathan Edwards (who preached in Northampton for over 20 years) and D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (who served in London for nearly 30 years) was the rule, and not the exception. Even in recent times, W. A. Criswell pastored in downtown Dallas for nearly 50 years and Adrian Rogers in…

Zionism might have a similarity to Hinduism in that both are a specific framework that retrofits an incredibly wide range of historical practices and thoughts into a fixation on a specific piece of land and nation; but Judaism and Brahminism are really not more meaningfully comparable more than anything else
Thinking of Asita and Simeon; the old ‘Judaism is to Christianity what Hinduism is to Buddhism’ is a common line that has a lot of variants. The old orientalists, William Jones for example, were really into that one
Asvaghosa, who wrote the first life of the Buddha in Sanskrit, was Dr. Ambedkar’s source for his Buddha and His Dhamma, was a Brahmin convert to Buddhism. So he presents the Buddha not as an avatar of Vishnu, but as somehow ‘in the line’ of Rama nevertheless—-he wants to present his text as something to supplant the Ramayana and Bharata—-and so the Buddha appears as (sound similar?) the ultimate fulfillment and repudiation of the Brahminical dharma. Everything good in it he matches and surpasses; he cuts the rest and goes farther in the new dhamma (which Asita will not be around to see). I don’t know if Vivekananda even knew that text existed; I’m not sure if Dr. Ambedkar ihterpreted it that way, even though it is now the standard understanding (very hard to debate)

Simeon Solomon, Love and Lust (n.d.)
In pederastic paintings and literature, Lust was always the enemy of Love, and as often as not it emerged victorious. One of Solomon's best-known paintings was of 'Love dying by the breath of Lust'. His only book, a prose poem of his Spirit's journey towards perfection, led by his disembodied Soul in the guise of a naked, effeminate youth, describes meeting the spirit of Passion. Passion had sought to slay Love, and became in the end the 'Paramour of Hate'.
— Ian Anstruther, Oscar Browning: A Biography
Then, as now, there were 'cultured' undergraduates, and those who were very cultured indeed, read Shelley and burned incense, would always have a few photographs after Simeon Solomon on their walls — little notes of illicit sentiment to vary the monotomy of Burne-Jones and Botticelli. When uncles and aunts came up for Guadys and Commem., while 'Temperantia' and the 'Primavera' were left in their places, 'Love dying from the breath of Lust,' 'Antonius,' and other drawings by Solomon with titles from the Latin Vulgate, were taken down for the occasion.
— Robbie Ross, Masques & Phases

MWW Artwork of the Day (10/23/22) Simeon Solomon (British, 1840–1905) Hosannah! (from "Dalziels' Bible Gallery")(c. 1863-81) Wood engraving on India paper, mounted on thin card, 16.3 x 12 cm. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
In 1862 the Dalziel Brothers, prominent Victorian wood engravers, approached a group of British artists with plans for a lavishly illustrated Bible. Work began immediately, but the sixty-seven prints of Old Testament themes were not published until 1881. Solomon came from a prominent Jewish family and intended his six designs to celebrate his heritage. Hosannah! shows a temple musician during the Feast of Tabernacles and was inspired by a line in Psalm 149, "Praise for God’s goodness to Israel." Solomon admired Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones, and this early work places him in Pre-Raphaelitism’s second wave.
More of this artist's work is included in this MWW exhibit/gallery: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1574253829346647&type=3

Pirates Blank Twins Again 4-0.
Twins 0 Pirates 4 W-Stratton (2-1) L-Woods Richardson (2-1)
The Minnesota Twins have had a tough time scoring runs lately and it continued last night when they were shutout. They returned to action this afternoon against the Pirates. A pitcher's duel broke out at PNC Park as Simeon Woods Richardson and bulk pitcher Luis Ortiz put up zeroes for the first six innings. Rowdy Tellez broke the tie when he smoked a Simeon Woods Richardson change-up out to center for a solo homer. Pittsburgh added on in the eighth as O'neil Cruz walked and Ke'Bryan Hayes singled. Rowdy Tellez knocked in a pair with a single to left and Yasmani Grandal walked. Michael Taylor hit a run-scoring single to center to put the Bucs up by four. David Bednar put up a zero in the ninth and the Pirates notched their second straight shutout tonight.
-Final Thoughts- Simeon Woods Richardson pitched a great game and didn't get any run support. He went 6 1/3 innings and allowed a run on six hits with six strikeouts. Jorge Alcala got out of the seventh and Jhoan Duran ran into some trouble in the eighth. Diego Castillo eventually got out of the eighth. The Twins scattered six hits and went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. They left six men on base. The Twins close out the road trip tomorrow as Bailey Ober faces Jared Jones in the series finale.

2024-04-29: The Ghost of Casey Jones (Encounter)
Casey Jones was a white railroad engineer on the Illinois Central line who died in a train crash in 1900 and was immortalized in a folk ballad composed by his Black friend, Wallace Saunders. Jones was known for being extremely punctual with his arrival times and also for his peculiar way he operated the engine whistle so that everyone knew when he was coming down the tracks. On the night of the crash, Casey had to fill in after another engineer called in sick and make up 75 minutes on an overnight passenger route from Memphis, Tennessee to Canton, Mississippi. On this fateful trip, he was using the powerful Engine No. 382, which had the nickname of "Cannonball" because of how fast it could go. The crash happened near Vaughn, Mississippi, where three other trains were out on track trying to reposition. Casey Jones was the only fatality of the wreck, which would have been much worse had Jones not tried to stop the train up until the very end. All these years later, the ghost of Casey Jones is said to haunt the rails of the Illinois Central.

Ghost of Casey Jones Encounters (1d6)
A long, lilting whistle races down an empty section of track, coming from nowhere in particular, followed by a huge gust of wind strong enough to knock down anyone standing close to the tracks.
The twisted wreck of Engine No. 382 is entangled with the rear cars of another freight train. A man lies on the ground, waking up from unconsciousness after a head injury. He identifies himself as Simeon "Sim" Webb, the fireman aboard the crashed passenger train. Curiously, the train appears to be completely empty and Sim doesn't seem too bothered by the wreck. He'll stick around until sunrise, and accompany the party if they decide to investigate the wreckage, but both Sim and the train disappears at sunrise.
A train trundles down the tracks, appearing slightly translucent during the day and glowing a ghostly blue at night. The engineer waves at the party and blows the whistle in the signature style of Casey Jones.
While crossing a railroad track, the crossing signs activate and a random party member gets stuck to the track. A slow-moving engine soon appears, heading straight for the person on the track. The engineer jumps from the train and runs toward the party member, tackling them out of the way of the train before running back to the engine and yelling at the party to stay off the track.
Standing on the railroad tracks is a horrendously burned man in a train engineer's outfit clutching a broken air-brake lever from a train. He looks at the party and says "I saved 'em all in that crash. Won't be needing this any more." He tosses the broken lever on the ground and fades away.
Brakes squeal as Engine No. 382 tries to stop on an empty section of track. The train shakes and shudders with the effort, and suddenly the engine begins to crumple and catch fire as though it hit an invisible wall. The train continues to travel into the invisible wall, its cars smashing together into a crumpled heap that is only the size of single rail car. Eventually it explodes into a pile of charred shards of metal that fade out of existence within 10 minutes.
