Post Inauguration Thoughts and Feels

*this post has been a work in progress since agent orange took office 1/20/25*

I want to start off by saying these past 72 hours have been rough as fuck.

As a brown woman in this country my heart and mind are broken. I am scared and full of ancestral rage. I fear for my family, friends and community as a whole. POC and LGBTQ+ people lives are in real serious danger and it feels as each second passes by our rights are being eliminated with the stroke of a pen. The tension is honestly palpable.

There have already been ICE raids in my town. I live 45 mins away from the US-Mexico border. We are feeling the effects of Trump’s border policy as they are being shaped. I no longer live on the south side but I fear for my neighbors that I once had. I fear for my grandparents who are naturalized citizens but live in a predominantly white community. ICE now has the authority to arrest people in churches and at schools. As a person who works with the youth my heart breaks at the thought of those babies being separated from their parents and even possibly deported.

I am concerned for my father who has recently started living in his truth and is a part of the LGBT community. I fear for him and his partner. I see the fear in their eyes as I speak to them about current events.

Needless to say I am filled with rage.

I see my fellow man just as fed up as I am yet we are so paralyzed with fear and the inability to truly rise up. As we are trapped in this hyper-capitalist system that won’t even let us take a day off without the fear of being fired or having our hours cut, we struggle to put food on our tables. Living in spaces that we can barely afford. Unable to truly organize for a better life in fear of retaliation (Starbucks, Amazon and Natural Grocers I am looking at y’all)

As an Aquarius I craved revolution since I touched down earth side.

From a young age I questioned this system. I would argue with my parents about getting a job and being expected to kiss my bosses ass and sacrifice my body and sanity to capitalism. I refused to participate and even now as I am writing this I am still struggling with it as I start my Saturn return I reflect on the revolutionaries I looked up to as a kid. Che, Malcom, Huey, Kwame Ture

Recapitulating these thoughts a month into Agent Orange’s reign of terror.

There have been mass protests across the country and world in response to this Babylon system.

My town has had at 2 demonstrations at least each weekend since Mango Mussolini seized power. Also in Phoenix there has been demonstrations almost every day it is truly inspiring to see. I knew we had it in us.

These photos have been a reminder of why I keep fighting each day. Every single person in these photos are responsible for change, I see the looks in their eyes. I feel and see the same emotions I am experiencing as well.

WE ARE THE RESISTANCE.

WE THE PEOPLE ARE THE OPPOSITION.

NOT THE DEMS WHO EXALT THE SAME BILLIONAIRES THAT MAGA HAS SOLD US OUT TO.

WE THE PEOPLE MUST FIGHT FOR OUR RIGHTS FOR THE LAST TIME.

I SAY THIS WITH MY ENTIRE CHEST AND FIBER OF MY BEING.

LIBERATION NOW. REVOLUTION NOW.

But my brothers and sisters this is only the beginning. We are disrupting the system, we need more direct actions. We need to reflect on those who came before to inspire us and guide us during the revolution. We need to truly organize a strike. Capitalism only answers to capitalist demands, we have the purchasing power to decide. We need to refuse to continue being cogs in this revamped imperialist regime that feeds off of the pain, suffering and blood of one another. In the words of K. Dot “How much does a dollar cost?”

LOVE IS HOW WE WILL FIGHT BACK.

LOVE IS THE ANSWER.

Boycott Amazon the price of your prime is other peoples lives and dignity.

Boycott Whole Foods. Overlord Bezos poisons your mind and your body.

Boycott Meta. They sell our time to the highest bidder. When we reflect before we die does all our time on IG truly matter. Don’t attempt to organize on those apps. The devil is in the details.

A solo career after being in a popular band has never been easy, especially when you’re only 18 years old and have been part of the world-famous boy band One Direction. Yet, even as the band comes to an end, you still find joy in being part of it.

Louis Tomlinson was the one who never sought a solo career. However, when you’re a true artist, being on stage is the only way to go. So, you have to venture out alone and create your own show. For Louis, it was a long journey filled with personal drama and the postponement of his first solo tour in 2020, as he reveals in his recently released documentary “All of Those Voices.” And now, here we are at his world tour, “Faith in the Future 2023,” listening to his second album, “Faith in the Future,” which was released in November 2022.

As we reach the halfway point of the North American leg, we find ourselves in Phoenix, AZ, at the Arizona Financial Theatre.

The venue is nearly full by the time the first opening act takes the stage. People already know that this show is a must-see.

Making his U.S. debut, Andrew Cushin, an insanely talented 23-year-old singer-songwriter, delivers a touching and extremely inspiring performance. With his stunning baritone voice and lyrics that belie his age, Andrew sings about his own struggles, hopes, and dreams. He is about to release his debut album, “Waiting For The Rain,” in the fall, which includes all the singles he performs, including the new one, “It’s Coming Round Again.”

The second opening act is The Snuts. Despite their van breaking down on their way from Las Vegas, they managed to make it to Phoenix. They are another phenomenal discovery for the audience. Hailing from Scotland, this band is also highly supported by their fans. They open their set with their recently released single, “Gloria.” The Snuts have the vibe of a band playing in a small bar, and each member is a talented musician who clearly enjoys their time on stage, just as the audience enjoys their electrifying music.

Even those who are hearing them for the first time find themselves dancing and singing along, fueled by the band’s positive energy.

With both these engaging openers, time flies by, and finally, Louis Tomlinson takes the stage. The crowd erupts into cheers and excitement as he begins his first song, “The Greatest.” For those who are familiar with One Direction, his show is a total surprise. His solo music leans towards the edgy side, but it’s also incredibly catchy and powerful. Louis has an amazing band accompanying him on stage, and the entire set is perfectly suited for performing in huge venues. Touring and interacting with the audience is his favorite part of the job, as can be seen in his latest album, “Faith in the Future.”

Of course, he performs a couple of songs from his former band as a tribute to that chapter of his life. One of the highlights of the night is his breathtaking cover of the Arctic Monkeys‘ song, “505.” With his unique interpretation and personal touch, he breathes new life into the track. Beyond his own performance, Louis’ concert is also a visual spectacle. The stage setup, lighting, and production elements create a mesmerizing atmosphere that perfectly complements the setlist. The show, overall, is a testament to Louis’ growth as a solo artist. Every night, he proves his ability to connect with the audience and shines on stage as the one and only member and artist, Louis Tomlinson.

Race Wrap Up – Copper Corridor 50k

This may be a short race report and will get into that in a minute. It was a really good day out @ the Copper Corridor 50k this past Saturday. As always, thanks to the folks at Aravaipa Running for hosting another great event. Much gratitude to the staff, volunteers, aid station crews, other participants and the spectators that cheered us on (especially that last half mile 😊). Had a great experience running the trails out in Superior, ones that I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do so without this race being hosted there. Another big thank you to the town of Superior, AZ. The police force, sheriff’s, families, and the folks that came out to share in the festivities made for an even better experience.

This was a solo adventure but always appreciate the sacrifice Robin, Alaina & Isabella put in to help support me in chasing down these endeavors. They provided me with several words of encouragement leading up to the race and during the day so thank you family!! The pictures included were from my cell phone as things were getting ready to start and throughout the first third of the race. Aravaipa started this race back in 2020, with their inaugural one coming just before the world shut down. I had it on my radar to do at some point however life……. mainly Isabella’s gymnastics and Alaina’s soccer weekend’s typically took priority (wouldn’t change that either 😊). Plus, the Copper Corridor has been traditionally the weekend after Black Canyon 100k, which is one, if not the favorite race for me. Considering some events that unfolded with the soccer schedule and the 2024 race calendar, we were able to put our name in for this year’s edition and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

Up until this past Saturday, I had only driven through Superior, and it doesn’t take long at tall to do so. It is about an hour from our house in NE Phoenix, east of the city as you begin heading into the mountain ranges of Pinal County. It is a small, former, mining town with some very interesting, and cool history you can read in the link above. These were all new trails to me, but I was excited to adventure into the canyons here and around Picketpost Mountain after doing some race research. My thoughts going into the race were to get a sense of my endurance and fitness after working on building my foundation for what we have outlined for the spring and summer. The course had a lot of single tracks, some technical terrain, and a few good climbs but after a hard training weekend just last week, and not having any taper, it was leading up to be an interesting event 😊. The days prior life really took over with a heavy dose of work commitments and responsibilities as well as some other personal and family obligations and obstacles we were navigating through. Needless to say my mind wasn’t on racing so I tried to take the mindset of having gratitude to be able to get away from everything and spend some hours in some new mountains and trails. Fortunately, the aftermath of the prior weekends runs left my quads and I was feeling very good leading up to the start line.

Speaking of the start line, and seriously, the tininess of Superior, my parking spot, which was along Main Street where literally 100 yards from each other. That was a very nice perk 😊. The morning was very mild with a touch of a chill but perfect temps for running. As we all gathered in the coral, after listening to a few minutes of course instructions, we were off down the main drag heading towards Picketpost Mountain in the distance and a morning full of exploring. After the ½ mile on Main Street we dipped into a single-track trail that basically skirted a creek bed and were on this for a few miles until we crossed under Highway 60 and into more of a desert landscape. The first 1/3 of the race went by smoothly with a few short climbs and descents as we meandered through a riparian area, in and out of canyons. At this point, I was with about 7-8 other runners as we ran single file enjoying the scenery, some conversation, and the ideal AZ, February weather.

The second half of the race is positioned as the toughest with the most climbing, we get up to the highest part of the course, as well as the most descent. The majority of this middle 1/3 is also exposed but as you can see from some of the shots, it is very beautiful. Additionally, these 11 to 12 miles are the most remote on the course and there is no aid, so we had to stock up before heading out into this section. Considering these elements, my plan was to take it easy on the climbs and run the downhills and flats to be able to have something left in the tank for that final 10-11 miles back to the finish. Of course, my mind was also thinking about what type of problem solving would need to be done over the next couple of hours. This was my first race since September and though the training was going well, I didn’t know how my body was going to respond considering the prior weekend’s adventure and I showed up to the race with 30 miles on my legs from the week leading up.

Around mile 12, as we were descending into a canyon, I began feeling some hotspots on my feet, but thought I was too early to get blisters and my left knee started feeling a bit wonky as well. Neither of these were corrupting my pace, or my spirit so I made myself aware and moved on. About a mile after that I came upon my new friend Roy, from San Diego as we were working our way up a climb. He and I then proceeded to run the next 5 miles together, talking about running, racing, San Diego, his potential move to Arizona, family, and life all together. It made those five miles, and what were supposedly the most challenging miles of the course, click by seamlessly. As we crested the high point of the course, we were met with this long, steep, technical descent and for some reason I felt like bombing down. I was feeling really good, thanks to Roy’s company, I let the momentum carry me. For the next 3-4 miles I was moving well as the final big-ish, climb approached, leading up to the aid station before heading back into town. It was a bit weird since I was the only one at this aid station at this time but did have a great quick conversation with the volunteers, grabbed a quick snack, filled my bottles and dowsed myself with some ice water for the final third.

This last 11ish miles had some technical downhills, that were pretty steep, but followed by smooth single-track, pretty much until we got back into town. This was where I experienced something that was a first for me in these races. It was something I’ve always wanted to feel, but it had always escaped me to this point. As mentioned before, I had thought about that moment, that comes every race, when you pretty much get punched in the gut. Something, or possibly everything hurts; stomach goes south, blisters surface on your feet, your quads get trashed, and your knees feel like they are being smacked with a hammer. It happened in each race, and I’d be lying if I didn’t wonder when it would be coming during this one. Well, it never really came, other than maybe the last ½ mile before hitting Main Street again. This final third, running through these canyons, with some nice cloud cover in the sky, moving over water crossing, and clicking off the miles, I did feel like a little kid in a sense. It felt pretty fulfilling to be hitting the same mile pace at this point in the race as I was at the beginning. As a few of us moved from the trail to the suspension bridge and onto Main Street for the final half mile, we were moving at a great clip, with the view of the finish line ahead of us and the outside patio bars and restaurants lined with patrons cheering us along the way. We heard one guy hell, “it’s all uphill from here.” Well, he wasn’t kidding because that same section we started on, all downhill, led right back up that hill to the finish line. Fortunately, it was gradual and short, and it didn’t matter at all because we were crossing the finish line.

All my other races, typically the last third, if not more, is a grind. It consists of managing through pain, figuring out problems that you don’t think of happening, and just focusing on moving forward. Many times, it is piecing myself back together to take that next step. Those experiences are when 1. we find out about ourselves a lot; what we are made of when the proverbial shit hits the fan, and 2. we learn and grow in ways to help us better navigate the next adventure. I do believe we grow more through adversity and through suffering a bit in that pain cave. However, after last Saturday’s experience, I believe there are some things that I should be learning. At least, some other strategies to incorporate leading up to race day. That whole feeling of “not being punched in the face,” was very nice I must say 😊. However, I know it won’t be something that I likely replicate anytime soon!!

The first KKK recruiter came to Phoenix in 1921

The beating and branding of Rolin Jones in 1922 was when the majority of Arizona residents became aware of the Klan's presence in the state.

The Klansmen who participated in the beating claimed they beat Jones after a female student accused him of "moral misconduct," but the charges against Jones were dropped by a Mesa justice court, the Journal of Arizona History article said.

A few days after the beating, fully hooded and robed Klansmen marched down the aisle of a local church and handed a letter to its reverend containing $100,000 and a message of support.

KKK members would do something similar to churches they disagreed with.

"The Klan used to go into Black churches in the Valley silently and in full regalia and drop money in the collection plate, if for no other reason than to remind everyone that they were there and remind Black people where their place was," Arizona historian Dr. Matthew Whitaker said.

What eventually became Buzz, the third studio album by singer-songwriter and globally-renowned star NIKI, started with an urgent quake from the innermost core of her being. What surfaced in its wake was a collection of warm, stirring folk-rock songs, which crackle and flare like a bonfire between close confidantes. “I went through an identity crisis,” says the 25-year-old of Buzz. “It took a lot of trial and error, and I just stumbled upon pieces of myself along the way. With a six-string in hand, and her family and classmates cheering her on from the audience, Nicole Zefanya then staked her claim to global stardom as NIKI.

And claim it she has - with over three billion streams worldwide, sold out shows on multiple continents, massive sets at festivals across the globe, front row seats at Paris Fashion Week, four songs on a Marvel film’s soundtrack, and some of the most phenomenal, confessional songs being released in 2024, NIKI has already established a veteran’s resume before the age of 25.

On Buzz, her songwriting remains as intimate as ever. In her initial sketches of songs for Buzz, NIKI took cues from other lane-paving women with confessional, honest lyricism soundtracked by guitars. “Joni Mitchell is my songwriting north star,” she says — and uncompromising feminist luminaries like Stevie Nicks, Carly Simon and Liz Phair. To match the wandering spirit of Buzz, NIKI cultivated her own elastic approach to guitar.

To further harness this creative and personal sea change, NIKI began enlisting producers who had worked with her favourite contemporary singer-songwriters. She tapped Tyler Chester, who’d captured tracks with Madison Cunningham and Sara Bareilles; she also recruited Ethan Gruska, who counts Fiona Apple and Phoebe Bridgers as collaborators.

Buzz reverberates with the hard-earned wisdom of a young woman who charges dauntlessly towards her dreams — but can still spare a laugh if she stumbles.

PLUSH is an all-female rock band with a mission — to bring an all-girl rock band back to the forefront of the music industry. Story: Timeless Warrior (Fandom: Lord of The Rings)

Name: Phoenix Garcia (formerly Phoenix Nowak)

Alias: Khaleesi, Dragon Rider

Age: 40 (shortly after the story begins she turns this age)

Race/Ethnicity/Home Country: White. Mexican on her mother’s side, Polish on her father’s. Born and raised in Arizona, USA.

Hair: Dark brown before the war; silver due to stress of the war

Eyes: Blue-grey

Height: 5′5″

Any Markings: A few tattoos: Valar Morghulis on the inside of her right wrist, Valar Dohaeris on the inside of her left wrist, the three-moon symbol for her pagan religion on her left shoulder, a skull with a chef’s hat and crossbones of a chef knife and whisk on the right shoulder, a red rose with one black pedal on the inside of her left bicep (a tribute to Rosa). Crisscross scars over her left eye from when she tried to save her wife’s life.

Powers: No known supernatural ones. Controls a mechanical dragon.

Bio: Phoenix was born and raised in Phoenix, AZ as the oldest of two kids. Her mother was abusive and her father stayed married to keep the kids safe. Phoenix met Rosa in high school and the two became instant friends, starting a relationship their senior year. Rosa went off to get her degree and a job at NASA while Phoenix went to culinary school and opened a restaurant in Downtown Phoenix. The pair got married once it became legal in their country. They then sold the restaurant so the couple could move to Houston for Rosa’s job. Phoenix began teaching cooking classes that went virtual once a pandemic hit their country. Not even a year later, a war broke out and they found themselves leading a small group of survivors. With Rosa’s intelligence and connections, she got a group together to turn an old plane into a mechanical dragon. Unfortunately, Rosa was killed two years before the war ended and Phoenix blamed herself.

After the war, Phoenix accidentally flies through a portal into Middle Earth where more problems require her help.

She is responsible for the catastrophic events from the ice age ending to Pompeii, all in an effort to maintain the balance of earth and nature. She is not fond of humans and grows more and more annoyed with them as the years go by and the planet becomes more trashed. She’s not a villain, she just wants to save her home.

She doesn’t remember her parents, her family if she had one, or really anything of her past after the first one thousand years.

Bio: Rhyannon is the Queen of the Fae and one of the first of her kind. Tir Na Nog is her kingdom and was one of the first realms established in Middle Earth. Contrary to what the Elves know, the Fae were actually the first beings of Arda. This realm borders both Mirkwood and Dol Guldur, causing tension between all three realms.

Thranduil has been engaged in a petty battle with Rhyannon since his father passed (who started the battle). The problem is, the realm is hidden so no other Elves believe it exists. Until Rhyannon decides to crash the Midsummer Festival in Mirkwood.

She is resting in Rivendell when Thorin’s company arrives. Gandalf persuades her to join the cause in re-taking Erebor. Thorin begins to warm to her as they make their difficult journey north. When they get caught in Mirkwood, Legolas reports to his father, Thranduil, that there is an Elleth amongst the Dwarves. Confused and intrigued, he commands she be brought before him. And is shocked to see someone almost identical to the wife he lost long ago.
