How to dress well for young corporate fashion girlies

Disclaimer, this post is aimed at women and feminine people in the corporate world, but these tips can apply for anybody regardless of gender expression <3

1. Covering up vs stripping down

It can be difficult for young people to find a comfortable balance between their workwear and their personal style. The average young person may struggle to adapt their own oversized, cropped, baggy or revealing clothes to suit the needs of a professional work ensemble. The easiest way to do this is to create boundaries for your work clothes, and stick to them as much as possible.

Personally I like to keep my boundaries at three separate points, sleeves, skirts, stomach. I never wear sleeveless clothing, and my minimum sleeve boundary is a thick tank sleeve. My skirts are generally just above the knee, and never shorter than my fingertips. This makes me feel more comfortable when sitting, bending, or crouching down at work. My torso is covered at all times while at work, and generally this is the norm for office wear. I like to wear clothing that meets or overlaps in the middle to ensure that I feel comfortable and appropriate at all times.

2. Necklines, cuffs and waistbands

When choosing necklines for work clothing, try to limit the amount of skin shown for a more professional look. I recommend trying turtlenecks, round necks, boat necks or a shallow v-neck for best results. When wearing button downs, never unbutton more than three buttons from the top. If you have a v-neck that you would like to wear to work but you feel is too revealing, try layering a camisole top underneath it, or securing the neckline with a safety pin at an appropriate depth.

Cuffs are a really fun way to express some of your personal style, and to help accentuate your proportions. Personally, I love to wear a flared sleeve, or even a bubble sleeve. More exaggerated and interesting sleeves add a unique touch to your standard corporate outfits. Experiment with sleeves and sleeve lengths to find what you’re comfortable with.

Waistbands are often something we don’t consider when choosing office outfits, but they can make a drastic difference when styled intentionally. Personally, i generally opt for a high waist trouser or skirt, as I am rather short, and i find it easier to keep my outfits work appropriate this way. However, a low rise pant or skirt with a long top, or a mid rise trouser with interesting layering, or even different dress waistlines can create unique and more personal silhouettes for your outfits. Playing around with accessories along your waistband such as belts or waist beads can help put a personal stamp on your corporate ensemble.

3. Fabric and textiles

Office and formal setting require that you eliminate some fabrics from your wardrobe, such as denim. Much as a tasteful, tailored denim piece may look more formal or appropriate than a pair of faded, baggy slacks, many corporate dress policies will forbid denim from entering your office. Instead of wallowing in your sorrows, try introducing new fabrics to your workplace wardrobe. Along with your standard cotton blends that everyone has, try wool or wool blends, corduroy, satin, silk, velvet, tulle or mesh. There are a place for most fabrics in the corporate world as long as they are styles appropriately.

Introduce pieces that have multiple fabrics such as tulle sleeves or skirts, wool bands or satin accents to maximise your personal style expression. Also, do not be afraid to lean into an embellished look. Beading, embroidery, lace, sequins and metal hardware are all potential accessories you can introduce to add flair to your outfits.

4. Colours

The most common misconception on the internet about office wear is that you can only wear black, white and grey. I denounce this idea, and instead propose that more colour is injected into your wardrobe in 2024. Just because you are in a professional setting does not mean you cannot dress in vibrant and interesting colours. Mixing and matching different colours into your looks is a great way to put a professional outfit together without feeling drab or dull. This also means that you are more likely to wear the piece outside of work, making it a better investment and a more useful piece of clothing.

5. Accessories

Accessories are one of the easiest ways to spice up a boring and lifeless outfit. Accessories extend past jewellery, into belts, gloves, hats, scarves, umbrellas, coats, bags, nail varnish, makeup and shoes. Mixing and matching a large selection of different accessories will allow you to rewear the same pieces over and over again without getting tired of them. They also are a great way to link your outfits back to your personal style and help you transition between workwear and homewear more easily.

Remember, the most important parts of office outfits are that they are:

Ridiculously Chic Maria Go 'Round! A Swinging Sixties Shift Dress Design

A first year student of RepubLikha from Bachelor of Design of Miriam College. Glad to see you here again for my second design!

The second requirement in Design History (AAV-104) class under Mr. Rino Datuin is to choose an era and type of fashion design and create our own.

We, the RepubLikha, chose the Swinging Sixties and I went for the casual wear design.

Explore the Chic but Ridiculous Fashion of the Swinging Sixties and how my design came to life!

Swinging Sixties, Oh How it Came to Be

The swinging culture was like an explosion of all the repressed feelings that English society had been keeping down, and London was its epicenter. Of all the channels they can use, fashion was their pick to reflect and correlate the social movements that happened during the time.

Liberated fashion started to grow during the Swinging Sixties especially on women to show the women empowerment movement. Conservative fashion slowly transitioned to mini skirts and dresses where they gained more control on what they want to wear.

All About Mini Skirts & Ridiculously Fun Fashion

There are a lot of designers during the fashion revolution in the 1960s and Mary Foale and Sally Tuffin are one of them. They are known for their lively, graphic and very wearable clothes for women. They created a range of informal dresses, skirts and tops, which they sold through department stores and their own shop just off London’s Carnaby Street. They would go on to design the first trouser suits that embraced the female form in the mid-sixties.

Another designer was Mary Quant, she pioneered modern fast fashion by offering short runs of cheap, trendy clothing designed with a younger target market in mind. Her most successful designs were her mini skirts and shift dresses, which almost always featured bright colors or graphic prints inspired by 60s pop art.

One of her notable pieces is the pink A-line dress from 1966 which Twiggy wore as you can see on our moodboard.

Ms. Twiggy and Her Fashion

One of the notable fashion icons from the era was Dame Lesley Lawson, most commonly known as Twiggy because of her twig-like frame.

Twiggy was a supermodel and she was one of the many who joined a movement that celebrated a more liberated fashion sense. She showcased the “mod aesthetic”, androgynous hair and bold make up.

The Design & The Process

The first image that you can see is the initial design I presented in class together with my team. It is a Cozy Cardigan Set which was inspired by the Cozy 60s Fashion. The idea behind this is how anyone can wear a cardigan, so I thought of making a casual wear which everyone can wear. The sleeveless top idea was made because of how liberated fashion is starting during the era. It’s a mix of being conservative and being open in different ways using fashion.

After the presentation and consultation with Mr. Rino Datuin, our professor, my design went to a cozy cardigan set to a fun shift dress!

The transition from a cardigan set to a shift dress was made with the help of the suggestion of our professor on how instead of recreating certain pieces, why not follow Foale and Tuffin's words of making a ridiculous and fun fashion pieces and putting our own personality on our designs.

That is how the Maria Go 'Round Shift Dress came to be. The name of the design was from the Merry-Go-Round amusement ride name and how it goes round every time. With this shift dress, it has circle elements and how a dress in general makes you want to go around and twirl out of fun.

It is paired with a gogo boots as it was a notable piece during 1969. The design on it is a sampaguita, a Philippine nation flower, to add a Filipino element on the shift dress design.

If you think that is it for my design process, you're wrong~ You are in for a long ride but I hope you will still stay with me!

Another consultation and presentation was made and after 2 more revisions, I present to you the final design of the Maria Go 'Round Shift Dress!

The final take on this casual wear was changed with a more bright and crazy twist on the dress. It is for anyone who wants to explore ridiculously fun fashion that also showcase the beauty of what Philippines has to offer.

Every detail on the dress is my take on the ridiculously fun fashion. It is simple but witty in a way. With this piece, I came to realize that the Swinging Sixties was a youth movement. It was a period of optimism and hedonism, and a cultural revolution.

The use of bright colors and more liberated fashion was a way for the youth to show that it is a new chapter and fresh start not just for fashion but also an era for the new and modern.

Autism and Clothing

From the time I was around 5 years old and discovered that jeans were an option of dresses, I’ve been labeled a tomboy.  20 years later, I haven’t really changed that.

I still wear jeans almost every single day, if I can get away with wearing a tank top I usually will, defaulting to a tee-shirt if not, and I wrap my feet safely in knock-off converse or work boots every day.  It’s just what makes me feel like me.  The way of dressing makes me feel safe and comfortable, and I don’t how who else to put it.  I’ve always had a slightly tomboy leaning, enjoying clothing types that are just a little more masculine leaning.  It has a lot less to do with presentation and how I want to be perceived, and a lot more to be with how these fabrics feel on my body.  I don’t need a “good” reason for the clothes I wear, but it turns out I might have an explanation beyond aesthetic preference.

There has been some discourse around the way that autistic women dress themselves, impossible for there not to be I guess, as people can’t seem to stop themselves from commenting on a woman’s appearance no matter the occasion.  But an idea that I’ve seen thrown around is that autistic women don’t understand fashion.  It follows an unfortunate vein of autistic people “not understanding” things.

For me at least, it’s not that I don’t understand fashion.  I just have certain needs that only certain clothes will meet, and I care more about being comfortable.  When we’re discussing neurodivergent people and their apparent disconnect from the very subjective and inherently fluid realm of acceptable fashion choices, we need to consider things like sensory issues and mobility needs.

I can’t stand it when things constrict my shoulders, so I wear a lot of sleeveless shirts.  I feel insecure and off balance when wearing open toed shoes, so I wear sneakers and boots.  I hate my hair touching my neck and back, so I stack it all up on the top of my head 99% of the time.  I hate not being able to move freely, even if I don’t need to, so I avoid dresses and skirts.  I sometimes feel like I’m losing track of my body in space, so wearing form fitting, compressing clothes helps me keep track of myself.  This means that most days I’m wearing jeans, a tank top, the same black knock off converse, and the same gray jacket with my hair in a bun.  I feel like a cartoon character sometimes.  And when I was a kid, I so badly wanted to be a cartoon character.  To wear the same thing every day, to have my style so neatly nailed down, and to not have to think about it or worry about how you look every day, because this is your look, hands down.  Sometimes I would get dressed and think “If I was a cartoon character, this would be the outfit.  I could wear this every day.”  I’ve found I’m not the only one, that similar to there being safe foods for those of us with sensory issues, there are also safe clothes.

I worked two different office jobs over the course of about a year and a half, the second of which being the worst workplace environment I’ve ever suffered..  I hated working in an office for so many reasons—staring into a screen all day, talking on the phone all the time, fluorescent lights burning into my brain, no windows making me feel like I was locked in a box, etc.  But one of the very worst things, was the dress code.  Business casual, I discovered, was way more business than it was casual.  Every day, I squeezed into slacks, dress pants, skirts, dresses blazers, flats, heeled boots, everything that grated against my body.  Just thinking about it now is making me uncomfortable.  I felt like I was playing a character every day, masking through 8 hours sitting at a desk, and dressed up in a costume I hated.  I was miserable.  I checked out and became a preschool teacher, where the dress code was a tee shirt with the school’s logo, and whatever black pants you wanted.  It was so much better, for so many reasons, but the clothing change was a big motivator in getting me to move jobs.

With autism, clothing is more complicated than what looks good, it has to feel­ good, in a number of ways that are going to vary from person to person.  I need clothes that are accommodating to my sensory issues and my need for movement, clothes that are familiar while also letting me feel like the adult that I am.  It feels sometimes like there is so much judgment in the realm of women’s fashion, and pressure to conform to standards that are ever changing and seemingly arbitrary.  It’s a lot to keep up with, and lends itself to the anxieties I already have to manage around socializing.

It really does matter.  If you have sensory issues, if you’re autistic/ADHD like me, I get it.  You’re not being picky or childish, you’re not cringey, you’re just doing what you need for your body and mind the best you can.  I hope you’re wearing something you like today.

It referred to swinging, knee-high skirts, fitted bodices, ruffles, pleats, a lace revival and the return of the hair bow as the coiffure accessory for women of all ages. “Coco” Chanel was responsible for the hair bow revival.

1965-66

In 1965, young French designer of the bar knee, the square cut white dress and flat white boots, offered the freshest and boldest look. He borrowed the cowboy hat to top the geometric looks of his clothes. White textured stockings epitomized the trend. His ideas influenced nearly every aspect of fashion. In the US, Pop Art popped into style. Then along came Op Art. Women dressed to match Op Art paintings, with their stripes, checks and wavy line prints. Dressed were divided geometrically by bands and brightened by contrasting blocks of colour. In 1965 where a youth rebellion resulted in massive profits for mod designers. The 'mod' look became popular. The mod look required mini skirts and pale coloured fishnet or lacy textured hosiery, cut-out low heeled “little girl” shoes, mannish jackets, and ties. Women borrowed suit styles from men. They wore straight legged pant suits, often of what was traditionally men’s fabrics, for daywear.

1967-68

In 1967 Twiggy became a fashion icon , fashion fell in love with the leg. Short skirts worn higher above the knee gave legs exposure they hadn’t seen in years. Women also wore peekaboo fishnets, spidery weaves and lace. Women also wore high boots as a fashionable way to cover up their legs. High-rise stretch vinyl and patent leather were a big trend at this time. In 1968 People were creating their own styles to match their personalities and mood. Accessories dominated the outfit. The new attitude was a reaction to the mini-dress of recent years. Trousers were celebrated for their versatility and were getting wider legs and softer. Women loved topping them with a colour, The most colourful, loud and expressive trends evolved from the outfits scavenged from thrift stores by hippies. 

1969

In 1969, fashion stretched, softened and became even more body conscious. A woman wanted to look lean, linear and long. The long, lean line was the most obvious fashion trend in 1969. “The Skinny Sixties” closed appropriately as women looked for clothes that would give them a tall, slim body. The slim silhouette was accomplished by extended skirts, long, straight-cut pants or, if she had long legs herself, they were accentuated by sheer dark tights.
