Just as a change in your GX fic, I can see Atem having Jaden take his studies seriously. Not to the point where he's top of the class, but he's above average but has some pretty niche knowledge, like about ancient cultures and can speak/write in what people thought were previously dead languages (Atem would make a living translating ancient languages he's a living Rosetta Stone).

If anything, that one teacher Professor Stein would hate Jaden not because he inspires others to slack off in class, but Jaden's insistence to stay in Slifer Red despite having everything at his fingertips is like a slap in the face for Professor Stein who grew up poor and had to fight for everything he had. Jaden didn't know what that was like and is just slumming it in his eyes.

Jaden being a ‘Slacker’ is something I struggle with constantly in this au.

Kaiba had a crazy study regiment and while he didn’t force it on Mokuba and I doubt he would force it on Jaden (or that Yugi would let him) I don’t think he’d be happy with failing grades

Yugi was valedictorian (according to DSOD) I think he struggled early on because of everything going on and his lack of interest in anything outside of games but threw himself into studying after Atem left.

I but I’m going to argue that Jaden isn’t a Slacker because he doesn’t want to learn. It’s a mixture of he already knows all the answers, because of his family and connections.

But more importantly his brain was literally fried by his birth parents.

Jaden does really well in one on one lessons. Learning from Atem or Yugi. Studying langue’s with tutors. He does really well when he can take things at his pace and it’s presented in a way that he can understand and learn from.

But his brain was fried. He struggles remembering something (which I have another ask on that I’ll talk about later)

The traditional classroom is hard on him. His brain just can’t catch on without asking at least 10 questions. It’s why he sleeps in class so much. He loses track of where they are and they won’t answer a Slifer’s questions.

However he can’t fail out, so he needs find a new way of figuring out the in formation. Luckily he’s had a decade to learn how he best processes information.

You also have to remember that he was offered to move up to Ra with in the first 10 episodes because of his dueling ability but chose to stay in red with Syrus. So it’s not that his grades are holding him back he is refusing to move up.

So I think Jaden comes up with a study habit/style that benefits him. He’s never going to be top of the class (mainly because he’s got some learning disability’s from his brain being fried and Duel Academy doesn’t seem like it be the best school for helping kids with learning disabilities.) he can’t test well. But he’s passing.

He shows Syrus his way of studying and it makes more sense than what’s happening in class. (Reading the actual text and taking notes) Bastion and Alexis join their little study group. Alexis and Bastion can understand the lectures and combined their lecturer notes with Jaden’s text notes and it makes an all encompassing study guide for the group.

Professor Stein hates Jaden for two reasons. Everyone is now skipping class but they are also passing. This is because Jaden’s way of learning makes way more sense to most of the students. It’s hands on and is more effective than a straight lecture. (He might also be teaching straight from the text and why would you go to a lecture that you could read in a comfortable spot, in bed or sitting outside)

I don’t know Stein maybe look at your teaching style and ask if you reaching all different learning styles? Straight lectures don’t work for most people. But I digress.

But this is a Great War of mine. I don’t want Jaden to be such a slacker because I don’t think Seto, Yugi, or Atem would be happy with him. But I also don’t want to change Jaden to the smartest most hard working kid ever.

And the thing is cannon Jaden is smart. He’s got good strategies and can problem solve. He’s not book smart but he’s not stupid. He’s socially inept from a lack of friends growing up (and likely neglectful parents but don’t worry I’ve fixed that) and he struggles with learning but he I wonder why when his parents fried his brain as a baby.

So I think Jaden does try in his studies and between his duel record and hard work could have been Obelisk by the end of his 1st year. He just refuses to move up. Probably failed a few test on purpose so they couldn’t move him.

Between the class not being set up for students like him and have a good grasp on everything they are teaching because of his family it’s no wonder he skips class.

I do love everything you listed out and I’ll have a lot to think about. This is something that I’ve been thinking about a lot but haven’t brought up because I wasn’t sure how to present it yet. Let me know what y’all think we should do with Jaden and his study habits.

“Bastion, you’re a kid. I could tell you so many times where she’s risked her life for me and vice versa. Thats just who she is. Its not your fault you got trapped. I once got trapped into a tournament because Pegasus stole my grandpa’s soul and the only way to get him back was to beat Pegasus. The kicker? I was only 15 and I almost lost myself in the shadow game. Things happen, its what we make of the aftermath that counts ok?”

What was the one thing the doctors told Leysa to do? Don’t duel while pregnant! And what did she do? Participate in a shadow game while pregnant.

She couldn’t help it! She was so disgusted by Tania’s behavior towards Bastion and Jaden she had to step up. As a reincarnated Amazon it was her duty.

But the shadow game took a lot out of her body and now she was resting in the school infirmary, much to the distress of Jaden and Bastion and the other members of Jaden’s crew.

Luckily Leysa would be fine and her unborn child, or twins as she found out, would be fine.

However she had noticed her phone vibrating. Both Yugi and Mako were calling her at the same time? That was unusual.

She looked up and noticed Fonda Fontaine pocketing her phone with a coy smile on her face. Oh no. She told them.

Leysa was not ready to be yelled at in stereo…

Judai:

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a Yu-Gi-Oh fan. For whatever reason, this series imprinted on me when I was a child and I just never let it go. I've watched the original series, season 0, GX, 5Ds, and Arc V, as well as read the original manga, the GX manga, and the Arc V manga, as well as watched all the movies. The point is: I like Yu-Gi-Oh. There are people who like it more than me, that have watched all the series and what not, but I think I still like it an absurd amount. And out of all the protagonists I know, Judai is my favorite. He's just so lovable, you can't help but like him! He's goofy, he's reliable, he's fun, he has a descent into madness, he's gay, what more could you want in a shounen protagonist? Though being sleepy isn't a major part of him, it's more of a gag of him slacking in class and always going to sleep, it's still super funny and I'm a little sad that he lost in Round 1, though I do like Sonic as well (who he lost to). Give the Slifer Slacker a chance!

Linhardt:

Considering Linhardt is my profile picture at the moment, I don't think I need to justify this too much. But I will anyway. Linhardt is the sleepy crest scholar. Although I will be the first to admit that I am not actually a Fire Emblem fan (and tbh I find the writing in Three Houses kind of bad) (sorry to those who enjoy it) I love Linhardt so much anyway. He's probably my favorite in that very large cost. I love that he's so unapologetically sleepy, like he doesn't care if you scold him to do work, he will do work on his own time. Not only that, but he's actually really smart and dedicated when he wants to be. Linny's friendship with Caspar is really nice, especially since I think someone needs to save Caspar from his awful dad & self-destructive tendencies. Plus, I really like his supports. Especially with Marianne, Hubert, and Edelgard. His supports with Dorothea in Three Hopes is also really nice.

Garfield:

It's Garfield. He's a classic comic. He's a classic meme. Little orange kitty. What more could you possibly want? I love Snoopy, but to be perfectly honest I think Garfield should have gotten as far as Snoopy.

Sleepytime Tea Bear:

Again. He's just a classic. What more would you want but a sleepy bear in pajamas on a chair?

Olruggio:

I'm a big Witch Hat Atelier fan and I love Olruggio. Like yes, I like Orufrey like everyone else, but I also just like Olruggio on his own. I like his scruffy little look and I love the fact that at first he is so intimating but almost immediately he's revealed to be a big softie. I love his light magic motif and I really think it's sweet that he made the thing to keep you warm when you sleep and gave it to the kids-- he's a FATHER. This man needs a nap fr though. Man I need to catch up with this manga.

Osaka:

IT'S OSAKA. Like!!! I don't even know how many clips and comics from Azumanga Daioh make the rounds around Tumblr, but specifically the ones about Osaka are amazing!!! She has the most autistic anime girl swag I love her so much. She's so sweet and earnest and silly... I always lose my mind at "OH MAH GOD!" and she has so many other classics. Like when she makes the Osaka stamp with her eraser or when she struggles to cross the street because she keeps zoning out when the light gets green or when she's distressed about Americans wearing shoes inside... I love her. And to her sleepyheadness, she's always falling asleep in class and whenever she's studying she just starts falling asleep. She's just like me fr...

Takane:

Back in the day I really liked Kagerou Project and so as tribute to my old obsession from middle/high school I have to give a spot to Takane. My favorite part of the series was when we saw flashbacks to the Yuukei quartet and Headphone Actor is still a bop.

THE REASON WHY I STARTED THIS TOURNAMENT IN THE FIRST PLACE??? Last December during finals I decided to read something light and fun while working and I chose Tanaka-kun is Always Listless because I remember the title from a few years ago when the anime came out and like I loved it SOOOOOO much. He's the ultimate sleepyboy and he's just so funny and relatable. He needs to be carried around by his best friend Ohta and his ultimate goal in life is to minimize as much effort as possible and he's always nodding off and he dislikes being a main character, instead wishing he was a background character... my favorite guy for real.

I've been leading you all. Hibiki-Sensei isn't his name, i lied to you all. In fact, He's actually...

Some guy whose dub name rhymes with Shmaden Shmuki?!

Jaden was always meant to be am important supporting character, but the idea to make a sort of 'second identity' came later, and the reason why is, quite honestly, i think it would have been funny. It was supposed to be the only reference to Hibiki from the manga before going 'nah screw it' and brought alongside the Hibiki Siblings.

So, what's his deal? As stated before, he's Jun's mentor who met her during a trip to the city, nothing has changed. He's matured a bit, perhaps a bit more cynical with some venom in his bite thanks to more exposure to Yubel among other things, but still the same Slifer Slacker / Dropout Boy at heart. He's a bit more visually rugged due to offscreen adventures as seen before in his 'Hibiki" form, and that look is what he looks like for the majority of the story. His main role is trying to stop the Karman Acolytes and their plans, and also serve as a mentor role to the gang, mainly the Main Trio. He also seems to be hiding a lot of stuff from them, perhaps a certain secret or two that really shouldn't be kept to himself. Some habits die hard, huh S4 Jaden? He treats Jun and friends with bemusement, often helpign them out, but lately hes been looking at her with a weird solemn glare. It also feels like he's seen this sort of stuff happening around them before...

This look is Jaden at his best during the story, around the final arcs once he gets serious. Inspiration was trying to get his usual red colors but more darker and also a certain duel monster's influence on him. Hair is usually covering it as "Hibiki-sensei', but his left eye is permanently like that, for a mysterious reason. Huh, where IS yubel in this anyway?

While he continues to use E-Heros and Neo Spacians as always, he's included some new cards as well. Not to mention, he's included some certain Masked and Evil archetypes in his Extra Deck. Neos and Flame Wingman now has to share room with a new monster ace, the return of E-Hero The Earth/Terra Firma as well, the Planet "NEXT" card in this story.

Does the public know that Jaden is adopted or do they assume he's Yugi's bio son?

When they are first spotted in public the public isn’t sure what’s going on. Baby sitting a friend’s kid/little sibling/cousin. Is it Yugi’s kid? Is it bio or adopted?

It gets cleared up pretty fast that Yugi has an adopted son but what he looks like and his name are kept from the press.

By the time Gx starts Yugi’s adopted son “the prince of games” is well known. They don’t know who it is but they know the kid exists and is probably close to their age.

The fuel academies staffs are a little extra stressed waiting to see which Duel Academy the Prince of games will attend.

Obviously they are Seto Kaiba’s schools, his kid will obviously attend. But there are also 5 schools (that we know of) the duel academy near Japan (we will call it central) is the obvious choice since Seto Kaiba is known to be an overprotective man and he would obviously want his son close. But Sheppard is super stressed because ‘what is the school isn’t good enough?” The prince of games going to YOUR duel academy is the sign of approval by Seto Kaiba that you are running the school right.

This is extra stressful for the staff because they have no clue what the kid looks like, how old he is, or his name. They know it’s a male student but that’s it.

Every year the chancellors of the different duel academy’s try to figure out which student is the prince of duel.

Zane was a good candidate (they don’t know Jaden’s age) he’s serious, a fantastic duelist, holds himself away from the general population. But Syrus joint the school kind of put that rumor to rest. They know Yugi and Seto only have one child.

Jesse got the rumors as well. He’s participating in big tournaments from a young age and was good enough to be given a one of a kind deck from Pegasus. The North Duel Academy chancellor has not shut up about him since he joined the academy.

Jaden had some rumors as well. He is a great duelist. But with the amount that he sleeps through class it’s quickly dismissed by Crowler and he mocks and staff member who brings it up. Surly Yugi and Seto’s son would be the top of their school not a Slifer Slacker.

Crowler had been eyeing up Shadex for the past few minutes with an annoyed glare, and the other Duelist looked back at the Obelisk Blue Headmaster with a stern scowl of his own.

"...What makes you think I'm not an aspiring student? Maybe Duel Academy has what I need. So come on. Entertain me."

Ohhh the nerve on this brat! He's not going to be shown up again, right on his own turf, JUST like that Slifer Slacker! He could even see Jaden in the stands with his friends, watching the Initiation Duels. He'll set an example for everyone!

"Fine then! If you're going to be a prospective student, then I'm going to test you! Let's Duel, you punk!"

"Fine by me... but just remember. You asked for this."

"I'll go first, since you're so testy. I'll set a monster in face-down Defense Position and end my turn there."

He drew his card, then smirked mischievously to himself.

"Sorry, son- but you won't like where this is headed. I activate the Field Spell "Geartown!""

"This Field Spell allows "Ancient Gear" monsters to be Normal Summoned with one less Tribute. Next, I activate the Spell Card, Star Blast!"

"For each 500 Life Points that I pay, I can reduce the Level of any monster on my Field or in my Hand until the end of the Turn. I shall pay 1,000 Life Points to reduce this Ancient Gear Golem in my hand from Level 8 to Level 6!"

Crowler LP: 4000 > 3000 Ancient Gear Golem Level: 8 > 6

"Now normally, Ancient Gear Golem would require two Sacrifices to Summon as it's a Level Eight Monster! But, since I both reduced its level And have Geartown-"

"-You can Summon it now with no Tribute. I have ears, you know, sir."

"Belligerent Loudmouth! Fine! COME FORTH; ANCIENT GEAR GOLEM!"

Ancient Gear Golem - Level 8 6 3000 ATK / 2500 DEF

"Now, Ancient Gear Golem, attack! Mechanized Melee!"

The Gear Golem's gears ground into a rapid spin, with a gigantic metal fist pounding straight into Shadex's face-down card, which was a Red-Eyes Baby Dragon.

"Such paltry Defenses... and that will cost you! My Ancient Gear Golem's effect deals Piercing Battle Damage directly to your Life Points!"

Shadex LP: 4000 > 1700

"Oh boy... the Teach must be really upping his game- he already has Ancient Gear Golem up and running without even a Sacrifice! I just hope this new guy's got what it takes to take it out. If I beat it, I'm sure he could too."

"Thanks for that." Huh- He was barely blown away by that attack! How'd he manage that!?

"By destroying my Red-Eyes Baby Dragon, you've activated its effect! I can summon any Level 7 or lower Red-Eyes Monster from my Deck, and equip my Baby Dragon to it to give it a minor boost! So I call upon RED-EYES BLACK FLARE DRAGON!"

Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon - Level 7 2400 > 2700 ATK / 2000 DEF

"Yes, yes, that's all well and good, but maybe summoning a monster with more attack points than my Golem would do better?"

"Trust me- I only need this one. It's my turn!"

He'd draw, before his eyes would glint with malice.

"It's over. I activate the Spell Card, Red-Eyes Insight!"

"This card allows me to send any Red-Eyes Monster from my Deck to the Graveyard- from there, I can pull any Red-Eyes Spell or Trap from my Deck to add to my hand! I'll send my Red-Eyes Wyvern to add "Red-Eyes Spirit" from my Deck to my Hand; But I don't think I'll need it. Now, I activate the Legendary Spell Card, THE CLAW OF HERMOS!"

As soon as Hermos appeared on the field, everyone, including Crowler, was in shock! The Legendary Dragons were just that; Legendary! Where did Shadex get such a powerful card like this!?

"By sending one monster from my Hand to the Graveyard, I can summon a powerful weapon from my Extra Deck! By Claw and Scale of both Hermos and my Meteor Dragon Red-Eyes Impact, I forge the Ultimate Weapon of Darkness! Emerge; Red-Eyes Black Dragon Sword!"

Red-Eyes Black Dragon Sword - Level 7 2400 ATK / 2000 DEF

"But this weapon only goes to those who are worthy to wield it! My Dragons are far more worthy of its legendary steel and scale than anyone else EVER would be! Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon, take what's rightfully yours!

Once equipped to my Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon; not only does it gain a 1,000 Attack Point initial boost, it also gains 500 Attack and Defense points for each Dragon on the Field and in the Graveyards! With both Impact and Wyvern in my Grave, and Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon on my field, that makes three Dragons- and thus, gives it an additional 1,500 points!"

The Dragon's tail got enveloped by the massive blade, shining brilliantly with its new accessory.

Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon ATK: 2700 > 5200 Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon DEF: 2000 > 3500

"I'm not done yet- Next I activate the effect of Black Metal Dragon from my hand- equipping it right to my Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon to give it even MORE attack power!"

Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon ATK: 5200 > 5800

"Oh; did you think I'm done yet!? Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon is a Gemini Monster! So now I can Gemini Summon it to give it an effect!"

Once the Gemini Summon succeeded, a row of flames engulfed the dragon's entire visage, making it look almost like a phoenix!

"W-WAIT A SECOND!! OVER 5,000 ATTACK POINTS!? L-Listen, sonny, let's just talk this out-"

"The time to talk is OVER! Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon, Turn that hunk of Junk into SLAG! PHOENIX FLARE SLASH!"

The Dragon cried out, launching itself into an attack. The Blade cut clean through the Machine like a hot knife through butter, delivering the promised molten slag to drip right down around the Teacher's feet.

"GYAAH! HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT!!!!"

Crowler LP: 3000 > 200

"Oh, and remember that effect I was talking about? If my monster battled this turn; At the end of the Battle Phase, my Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon can deal damage to you equal to its original Attack Points.

Game. Set. Match."

The Dragon descended upon Crowler and his new slag pile, giving one final roar as its flames reached outwards and covered Crowler completely!

"GYAAAAAAAAH!!!"

Crowler LP: 200 > 0 SHADEX WINS.

The crowd would cheer and gasp once again, as Jaden got up from his seat and cheered louder!

"WOAH, YEAH!! That was AWESOME!! Talk about a come-from-behind Victory! I gotta duel this guy next!"

That's when Jaiden caught something in his peripheral. Wait a minute... weren't those... they were..!

Wings. And was that... a tail?

It didn't seem like anyone else even seemed to notice them... nor did they seem to notice something else entirely.

This new guy was staring right back at him. Red Eyes were glinting in the light, just like the same glare he gave Crowler. This wasn't a friendly offer to duel. This was a threat to stay out of his way.
