PART 1: FIRST DAY/INTRODUCTIONS

Bonten is Tokyo's most notorious crime syndicate but has an office like any respectable business. even if it was a front. Each member had an office, there were a couple of meeting rooms, and they even had other staff who like you were sworn to secrecy or face deadly consequences. The pay was better than any other place you'd interviewed at, and the hours were reasonable, but you were expected to be flexible if needed to come in early or stay later.

The reception area had a few sofas and tables, and your counter was the first thing you saw when you got off the lift. You couldn't actually enter the offices behind you unless you had a key card or you buzzed them in. It would be quite lonely out here on your own or so you thought.

Hajime Kokonoi had hired you, he said it was because you looked trustworthy, and of course, you made a joke that he'd probably had your background checked. He told you to your face he had and you were the most worthy applicant. When you pushed for more he sealed his lips. On your first day, he put a very nice vase of flowers on the reception counter stating it gave the place more life, but it was a bouquet of your favourite flowers. So you thanked him and he said it was nothing, even though a couple of flowers had to be imported. You heard he was stingy with money.

You were typing away when Takeomi Akashi walked out of the offices with an unlit cigarette between his lips not noticing your presence, because he was busy cussing the lighter that wasn't working. 'Excuse me, let me help you,' you call out, grab the lighter from your bag and walk over to him. 'Who are you?' he asks confused, and you explain as you light the cigarette. 'Thank you, you smoke?' he enquires and you shake your head, and explain your friends do and on nights out you'd rather them come to you than a stranger. 'Smart girl, never smoke.' Takeomi now knew who to come to when his lighter wouldn't work.

Kakucho walks out of the lift on his phone, 'good morning,' you say politely. The poor man jumps out of his skin and nearly drops his phone on the marble floor. You apologise profusely for scaring him and his face gets a little redder the more you talk to him. It's not lost on you that he's not so subtly checking you out, in fact, you find it kind of cute when he should be intimidating. 'Nice to meet you, err I have to go,' he stutters and makes a quick escape into the offices. At the end of the day, he introduces himself properly, telling you if you need anything you can call him. It had been a while since a guy had given you his number.

Word spread by lunchtime about the new hire and that's when you met the Haitani brothers Ran and Rindou. Hajime had warned you to be on your guard, you were innocent and the brothers would try to taint you. 'hello beautiful, I have a reason to come into the office more now,' Ran croons, leaning over the counter staring at you with lustful eyes. You sit up straight, 'it's nice to meet you, but nothing's going to happen.' Ran looks hurt while his brother laughs, 'Maybe you're not as much of a charmer as you think brother. Call me Rindou.' and you're shocked when he takes your hand and kisses it. You would almost believe he was a gentleman if he didn't have the same lustful eyes as his brother. You smile and remove your hand from his, 'I don't know what game you two are playing but it won't be easy. I've been warned.' the brothers exchange a look and huff, 'Koko,' they say in unison. You nod and go back to your computer. Little did you know that your rejection ignited a challenge between the brothers to see who could win you over first.

After the Haitani brothers, you thought you'd be left alone but there were a couple of cocky male employees who thought they could flash expensive suits and watches while being drenched in overpowering cologne. Unlike the brothers these two immediately violated your personal space making you feel uncomfortable, 'can you leave me alone please?' you ask, 'get away from me,' you insist. One of the men goes to grab your arm 'Know your place bitch--' when he's grabbed himself and thrown backwards. Kanji Mochizuki stands guard in front of you, 'the lady said no, just wait until the boss here's about this.' Then men scurry off scared by the threat. He turns to face you with a warm smile, 'Sorry about that, they won't cause you any more problems. Give me a shout if anyone else makes you feel uncomfortable.' you weren't quite sure what to make of him, but you just got your second number of the day.

Hajime or Koko as he told you to call him asked you to stay late to accept a parcel for another member. This is where you met Bonten's no.2 Haruchiyo Sanzu and the leader Manjiro Sano. You were taken aback seeing Sanzu covered in blood while Mikey didn't seem to have a single scratch on him, both looked equally intimidating and you didn't want to get on either of their bad sides. You gulp and look down at the parcel you'd not long signed for seeing it was addressed to Sanzu, 'good evening I have a parcel for Haruchiyo Sanzu.' both men stare at you, Sanzu looks manic while Mikey looks bored. 'Thank you, lovely lady, pink looks good on you,' Sanzu chuckles and takes the parcel before skipping into the office. You brush imaginary creases off your light pink blouse, 'well I guess I'll be going then, have a good night sir,' you pick up your bag, turn off the monitor and stand up noticing Mikey hadn't moved his eyes from you, 'are you okay sir?' you ask. He blinks a couple of times, 'Yes, get home safe,' you nod and press the lift button, feeling a little uneasy having Mikey continue to stare at you.

When you returned to your apartment, you threw yourself on the bed, thinking about your interesting first day of work and all the Bonten members you'd interacted with. This was going to be an interesting job.

So the whole "I've waited a hundred years for this" is kind of applicable to all the Cullens, but-

It's different! Carlisle has waited like 300 years. He's honestly given up hope in ever finding a mate, thought it wasn't in the cards for him

And despite having a loving family, seeing all of them and his friends find a life partner made him lonley. He was happy, but a lonley person.

So when you come into his life it's like a million fireworks go off at once!

He may be very rusty and old-fashioned, but that doesn't mean he doesn't sweep you off your feet!

You would be seriously head over heels within the first 5 mins of talking

Wether you were one of the Cullen kids' friends or you were in need of medical attention, you were hooked the minute you met

You definitely thought there has to be a catch

He can't be handsome, rich, kind, smart, respectful, AND sane

I'm not sure how it would work with his super self control, but he would probably feel at least a little bit of a thirst for your blood

He'd probably freak out a bit and be overall shocked

Maybe a bit repulsed with himself for even slightly wanting to indulge in human blood

Nevertheless he overcomes this and quickly works on spending time with you

Obviously he wants to come across as normal as possible but he can't help but be overly enthusiastic

Dates would include dinners to expensive restaurants, way too expensive in your opinion

Long walks by the beach or in the forest near his house

Reading by the fireplace

Loves reading you to sleep

Ballet, Opera, or classical music shows are probably a must

But he's down to more casual things too

Being with you makes him feel human, so late night 7-11 trips, or binge watching a show gives him a new, fresh, taste of a cosy life

He loves loves loves to cook for you

Puts on the cooking channel and gets to work

Will try different recipes and cuisines and have you rate each meal

Will go with Alice to the mall so he can buy you all sorts of gifts

Will teach you how to properly dance, none of that jumping up and down business

Would love the idea of getting married soon, he knows you both will never want anyone else

But he would also love to support you in your future in normal society, while you have it

Wether that be post-seccondary or a career

Speaking of weddings, probably a big one

He would invite his long list of friends of course, maybe even the volturi

But simple. He never wants to be showy, but he's just so proud and exited!

Might’ve been homeschooled by his mother, growing up in late 19th century England. Receiving a basic education in core subjects.

Once taken in by the Joestars, acted more as an overachiever who excelled in academics and sports, partly out of his ambitions and partly to rise above his poor background. He would be charming to tutors but manipulative toward Jonathan if they were ever taught together.

Extremely sharp and quick witted. Both very street smart and book smart. Excelled in rhetoric, literature, and debate.

He probably had no patience for authority figures who didn’t respect him. Lessons would have been formal and rigid, following the time period’s emphasis on discipline. I think he would’ve done pretty well in this environment though.

Used his natural charisma to make tutors favor him over Jonathan. If a tutor corrected him or didn’t immediately praise his efforts, he would mask his resentment but stew over it later.

If he’d attended a school, he’d definitely be part of the debate team, rugby team, or cricket team.

Report Card: “An exceptionally bright student, but his attitude toward peers needs improvement.”

Kars

Obviously he’s received no formal education, but definitely self taught through centuries of observation and experimentation.

He’d be a know it all I think. Though he'd genuinely find joy in learning and furthering his understanding of the world. I don’t know how hed do with deadlines though, he’d want to take everything at his own pace.

If he were placed in a modern school when he was younger, Kars would be the intimidating genius who effortlessly aces every subject. He’s the student who reads advanced material for fun. 1000% reads ahead of the class and gets in trouble for it.

Very good in all sciences, especially biology, chemistry, and physics. Would impress everyone with his deep knowledge of history and philosophy.

Doesn’t see the point of school rules and might challenge teachers who he deems unworthy of their positions.

He would join a science club, robotics, or philosophy society.

Report Card: “Unquestionably brilliant, though his disdain for authority disrupts the classroom environment.”

Wamuu

Like Kars, no formal education, but his disciplined and curious nature would make him an excellent student in a modern setting.

I think he would find theoretical subjects like advanced mathematics frustrating without practical application.

I think his rigid adherence to rules might make him inflexible in creative subjects.

He’d be a very active participant in choir, the debate team, and/or volunteer programs.

I would assume he might’ve attended a public school in Italy during his youth, though he wouldn’t have had much formal education.

The mysterious loner who rarely spoke and sat at the back of the class. His presence was unsettling to others, and he likely avoided extracurriculars.

Skips classes and often entire school days. There are rumours among the students that he’s part of some sort of gang.

I think he’d actually be good in mathematics and problem solving, as he’s meticulous and logical. Would he use his intelligence to ace his classes? Lmao no.

Definitely lacks social skills. He avoided group work and mistrusted his peers.

No clubs or activities. If he stayed the whole school day, he’s going straight home.

Probably attended a private school, I’m pretty sure he’s lived in Morioh his whole life.

The quiet, unassuming student who always turned in assignments on time but avoided attention. Teachers liked him, but classmates found him odd.

Makes it a point to get slightly above average grades. Just “normal” enough to blend in.

Precision in subjects like mathematics, chemistry, and music.

Another one who’s poor at socializing. He was polite but distant, never forming close friendships.

I’d see him being part of a music club (piano I think), or chess club.

Report Card: “A diligent and talented student, though he rarely interacts with his peers.”

Diego Brando

I don’t think he had a normal education, if I remember correctly he worked on a farm as a kid and probably didn’t get to go to school at that time. Later on though he might’ve attended school. He might’ve been an outsider among wealthier students.

The competitive, ambitious student who excelled academically and athletically to prove himself. Diego was likely resentful of wealthier classmates and used his successes to spite them.

I think he’d be very good at most sports, sciences, and debate.

Prone to jealousy and conflict with peers. Probably gets in a lot of arguments and challenges his classmates.

Part of an equestrian team, fencing club, or debate society.

Report Card: “A highly capable and driven student, though his competitive nature occasionally leads to conflict.”

Funny Valentine

Likely received formal education in 19th-century America, maybe at a military academy.

The disciplined, patriotic student who excelled in history and public speaking. Valentine was a natural leader and respected by peers and teachers alike.

I can see him lecturing other classmates on how important and great America is. He probably bought into a lot of war and nationalist propaganda directed towards youths in his time. Often telling other students about his dream to become the President someday.

Great in history, government, and oration.

One weakness is how his single minded focus on his ideals sometimes makes him dismissive of differing opinions.

Part of the debate club or student government.

I’d love to hear some library stories!

Okay friends here is my support your local public library manifesto:

I have worked in a public library for a little over a year now, and I worked in an academic library for a year and a half. They’re two different beasts, and I love both, but public libraries will always have a special place in my heart.

Lately, as I’m sure you know, public libraries in the US have been under attack by people who really don’t understand public libraries and all that their employees do.

So, here are some of the things that I’ve done in my year of public library work that people outside of it might not think of:

1. I’ve taught several older adults how to text on their iPhone for the first time, and how to use their smart phones generally.

2. I led teens through a library orientation to show them all we have to offer (which is pretty important when we regularly have 50-60 teens hanging out at my branch after school).

3. I’ve helped people over chat reference locate information and obituaries for their relatives. This involved looking through old newspapers and databases — it was really cool and the patrons are always extremely thankful!!

4. I helped a woman locate her many-greats grandfather’s civil war records using our local history collection.

5. I’ve printed countless tax forms for people and made appointments for them to get their taxes done at the library for free.

6. I’ve developed relationships with the local community college and a local university to get more college students to use the public library and to get them out into their community. (Let me brag here: this is in the strategic plan to be completed by fiscal year 2026, and I, a 23 year old library associate, have already been doing this, teehee)

7. I set up 4 all-ages displays and 2 adult displays this year alone, and I have 2 more I’m setting up in September.

8. I’ve helped kids locate materials for homework in books and using our online resources.

9. I’ve helped with our branch’s Lunch at the Library program, which feeds any kid up to age 18 for free every weekday during the summer.

10. I’ve helped people young and old with resumes, job applications, and helped them find career readiness and test prep materials countless times.

Libraries are SO much more than just books!!!! We have online resources, puzzles, board games, cameras, fishing poles, cake pans, and so much more!! We have programming for ALL ages! I specifically program for 20s-30s! Check us out!!!!! And don’t forget: public libraries are some of the last spaces that you can exist in without having to spend money. They need to be protected, appreciated, and most of all VISITED!!!

Improved Imitations: Modified Copies Winners

@10001gecs — Pea-Pod Fields//Silent Suburbs

Immediately what sticks out to me is what I guessed to be—and you confirmed in your submission—a very direct reference to classic horror film Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). For those who haven't seen it, aliens invade by way of strange vegetative pods that slowly kill and replace humans, thus the use of pea-pods as a stand-in. I do think calling it "Suburbs" might be a bit too on the nose, as it's difficult to fit that concept into any of the existing Magic setting, and could easily be achieved with something like "village" or "district" in a more urban plane. I've been really excited to see new Room designs after their strong initial showing, and this really hits the spot. Both doors synergize perfectly while still standing up fine on their own. Pea-Pod fields is a bit harder to quantify on its own, but a slightly more expensive Rampant Growth that thins your deck an additional card is perfectly serviceable. Though, it could feel like the order you want to unlock them is a bit fixed. The land coming back as a creature as well is very clever, and the wording on Silent Suburbs means it works extremely well with effect that let you relock doors.

@fractured-infinity — Boon of Sakashima

I want to preface this by making clear that I say this with the greatest respect, but: what? This is immediately so delightfully off-kilter that I'm instantly transfixed. A one mana Clever Impersonator is certainly absurdly powerful on its own, but both stripping away power and toughness from creatures it may copy and attaching it at the hip to a creature to make it easier to remove are both very smart. It's not flawless however, and I do have a few gripes. Copying another Aura removes most of the downsides and is thus noticeably more powerful that its other applications, so I think it could use a "non-Aura" rider. Similarly, if the intention of being an Aura is to make it more vulnerable, being able to enchant creatures you don't control feels rather against the spirit of the card. Having said all that, though, I'm still a very big fan of the card.

@levelzeo — Vengeful Shadows

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the vast majority of cards submitted this week were blue. After all, blue is the primary color for copying things, but any color can do it if it feels sufficiently appropriate. That's what draws me to this card, then, which does copying in monoblack in a way that just feels so right. Black is already plenty good at bringing back creatures that die, so this really just functions as an extension to that, and tacking the Quietus Spike effect to whoever wronged the creature feels so delightfully devilish. The restriction to your opponent having to intentionally remove something prevents it from being too easily abusable, while the flash enables it to still be a "gotcha" moment against an unwary opponent. The flavor is just delicious too, really epitomizing "vengeance" while fully selling the really cool shadow angle. Part of me is kind of sad that the copy doesn't have shadow, but I'm fully aware that that would be both too cute and too strong, so I don't hold it against you.

I used to always get this feeling that some guys thought I was like too good for them? or like too much to handle? in a good way tho!! maybe because I was one of the “smart kids” or whatever. Who am I?

Hello, my name is John Perepelkin.

I am a third semester student for Information Technology Services at SAIT in Calgary. I have been enjoying the courses very much, and though it seems difficult sometimes, if I study hard I seem to do well. I have not done a lot of research into what field I want to pursue within IT, but it seems to me that I have a knack for virtualization and good skills with server management. I think though, that cypber-security is a field in extreme demand.

I am an older student, and when I was a child, computers were just becoming PC's. First one I had seen was an Apple I. Very basic. Nowadays the technology seems to almost be outpacing our ability to control it.

I have a wife and we have been married 14 years. Good timing, for this information on the blog, because we met on valentines day, and it is the 13th today. We have one 10 year old daughter, and she is kind, smart and has recently gotten her first degree black belt in tae-qwon-do.

We enjoy the outdoors and in the summer we go camping whenever possible and sometimes we travel to the U.S. or to other parts of Canada. I enjoy fishing, and just being in the great outdoors when we go out.

WHY EMERGING TECHNOLOGY IS RELEVANT

I think emerging technology is important for me, especially as I am in the IT field, and everything I work with involves technology, if the technology is new and improved from an old technology that's great. If it is a completely new technology it is important for me to understand it and how I can affect my chosen field of work.

A new technology can open up new industries, and new fields of employment. Twenty years ago, the internet and networking was taking off at an exponential rate while ten years before that, networking existed only at a rudimentary level. The new technology that had emerged that made our current social network and technological network possible was video cards. The video card enabled a computers memory and cpu capacity to be used for raw data, and the data used to create and transmit video was transferred to the new video cards. That is an example of how emerging technology has effected everyone from then, until now.

Today, the newest technology that everyone is excited, or worried about depending on your viewpoint. This of course is machine learning, or AI(artificial intelligence). From what I have seen this newest technology is in it's infancy. We have learning models that can help us in our everyday work, but these models cannot actually do anything on their own. However the applications for industries and automation seem to be very interesting, it is possible that in the future our manufacturing plants will only need an AI to run it with robots doing the 'hands-on' work. This will be possible revolution for human society, as we will a)have no jobs besides maintaining the AI and the machines, and lots of the work we do will instead be done by machines. Automation to the most extreme point possible.

These are just a few examples of how emerging technology is relevant, in fact it is extremely relevant.

If you’re saving money, it could be to the point of manipulation - that’s only applicable towards relationships, and comes from a lack mentality…probably instilled in childhood. Easy to say, right? Not to live. It’s being shown if you’re a saver it’s ultimately for nothing because you don’t want to actually spend on anything - out of fear of having nothing later. Or not enough. If you’re wanting to move up in your company or at work, you could be restricted by a degree or something that you don’t want to “waste” money on. Apply to everything, there’s an excuse for everything you don’t want to buy, but do, but won’t. Some may have a massive debt they don’t know how to pay for. A separate story I’m getting is having lost someone in your life - to what degree I don’t know - and feeling very emotional but internalizing it. Waiting to get over it, not really dealing with anything, not talking about it. Holding back, not only from this person but probably everyone else too.

A thought just occured to me.

What if Quackity was secretly partnering behind the scenes with duolingo for his translator, which was until now, ai free apparently?

I only think this because he said or implied heavily he wanted this translator of his to be eventually a twitch application for streamers, may have plans to partner with them, and twitch apparently even sends notifications praising him, or so ive seen in screenshots maybe I misunderstood what is happening in them.

On top of this, duolingo has given him a shoutout before when no other learning app has done so, and while this is not evidence indicating anything, if correct there is a correlation if not out right connection between Quackity's team and Duolingo I at very least speak for myself when I say I am uneasy about this.

Not only is Quackity potential partnering with a company that just fired their human staff team in favor of AI thusly making Quackity's claim to not using AI potential risk to become a lie, but he also just got in legal trouble about general abuse of human resources both having those working under him abusing his temporary workers AND having someone who is considered still to this day EXTRMELY suspect for not only mishandling and pocketing money, but also potentially being his pedo brother.

Like if this is partnering with Duo thing is true im sorry that is shadey af and I hope Quackity reads the room and does the smart thing before this blows up as yet another "quackity mistreats his workers" drama again.

Also, while not impossible, i find his claim this translator does not use AI to be very suspect, and hard to believe, like I am open to being wrong, but im very skeptical about the idea and am not entitely sold, and I see more people supporting it because it is made by Quackity.

My breakdown as to why is because there are a lot of things that people do not technically consider AI but functionally are by all technicalities are AI, just extremely simplified in both function and method, including text to speech and most translators, Quackity is not even the first "live translator", there are others and Im sure most modders could figure out how to make exactly what Quackity is doing.

The only difference is Quackity claims his isn't AI based and his is meant for Twitch vs being a phone app, but who is to say Google won't reach out to twitch and ask to import an app that is just that, a translator backed up another big corpo with far money than he is playing with.

And not even touching up upon the elephant in the room that is Dream having a near identical copy of Quackity's translator for the QSMP like that doesn't raise questions, why did Dream know what Quackity translator mod look like and how it functions in game? Is that not raising any number of red flags to anyone?

Knowing about the translator is one thing, and even going as far as to "release"/show off "his" translator first before Quackity adds to this mess, like ok, is it actually the same? Did they actually co-opt is before Dream's name was thrown under the bus for valid reason? Is Quackity lying and capitalizing on the fact Dream's name is no good now and stole Dream's work? Dream and george are coders, maybe they helped build it, but they split and Quackity took what he had to work with to be finished by someone else?

Like, it rots in my mind, and has for months now, especially after the drama came out suggesting Quackity to be a shadier person he lets known, hes very secretive even to the point of being seen as shadey by some fans and sometimes for honestly valid reasons.

Like his Five Hills Merch company that claims to work with multiple CCs but only does so on a technicality when Quackity makes merch with other creators, like the deck of cards featuring other members of las nevadas or even QSMP with the egg merch, but otherwise its a grey area of if they count as "other CCs"

Look, the point is is that Quackity has a history of being shadey. There is not a solid line of any proof he is bad. He has been so secretive about his business and himself that if he is in the wrong and is actively partaking in shadey business practices we will need someone to dig fucking deep, not condoning stalking here but it would need a lot of research to be done.

I’ve made a bunch of doodles of my oc but for the moment I’ll just info dump the concept tehe

So like her full name is Winifer Howllos (pronounced hollows) but their nickname is Winnie!!!

Anyways Winnie is a werewolf themed toon and she’s a main character toon 💀

(This is where I come in and say I literally have no knowledge of dandy’s world lore… so like if this isn’t applicable… then shhhh we’ll like slap the au card BAHAHHA)

Her general premise is they were supposed to be a seasonal like event toon but for Halloween! Her and her gangle of ghoulish fiends were supposed to be a hit! An episode was story-boarded and promo art was made of the gang (some posters and just little odds and ends) however it was decided that making toons strictly based over one day rather than the month as a whole was not a smart financial decision. Don’t ask me for the schematics just trust LOL

At this point only Winnie had been created, the others had not— so the project was scrapped in favor of toons that would have better longevity if that makes sense. Most of Winnie’s life is spent in a dank, dark, closet all alone 💔

Anyways one day a janitor or something happens upon her prison— closet and this person alleviates their loneliness while telling her all sorts of stories about the outside world.

So uhm I’ve kinda like absorbed your idea of the lore like a sponge if that makes sense??? Like uh with dandy being the first to turn and poppy and boxten working to get research and save the others it just itches my brain pleasantly and I was like “yep that’s canon trust”

After the icky Ichor hits I like to think because Winnie is isolated and alone they don’t become a twisted(at least from the get go…), but her janitor friend stopped coming and she gets so worried that she finally gets the courage to bust out and subsequently happens upon poppy and boxten and helps them lol

Hi you asked this back in… *checks date* February and you probably were asking for smut but this is all I have so far as my “more fem KinnPorsche nonsense” doc because I kind of just want fem Porsche and Kinn to meet as customer and bartender because I think that would be very cute of them so this is that: —

“I haven’t made your drink yet.”

“So? It’s a tip. Take it.”

Porsche rolls her eyes. “I make plenty of tips without you.”

“I know.”

“If you know, then cut it out already.”

“One date.” Porsche’s customer grins. “You need a break.”

“How do you know what I need?”

The customer, a regular for about a month now, wiggles her perfectly shaped eyebrows. 

Porsche turns away before her customer gets the satisfaction of her embarrassment. She quickly starts on another cocktail, avoiding Kinn’s eyes. No, not Kinn. Customer. Yok says to keep a distance from the really nicely dressed ones; otherwise, it’s not her business who Porsche takes home. And it’s not that Porsche isn’t hit on by other clients at Hum Bar. There were aggressive clients. There were creepy ones too. But this one. But she’s never had someone so persistent. Never someone so neutral. This one comes in like clock work. Has exactly one gin and tonic. This one asks, takes no for an answer, and leaves a hefty tip that Porsche makes sure she shares because not sharing is cruel and sends the wrong message. Then tries again the next day. 

She let Kinn know that she shares the tips with the bus boys and the junior bartenders. Kinn never stops leaving the tips, though. 

The other woman that comes with Ki- the customer always wears a high ponytail and a sour look. At first, Porsche thought they were looking for a third. But Kinn made it clear on attempt #4 that she doesn’t share. 

If Porsche were to say yes. 

The customer leaves a number of bills and calls out to Porsche. “Get home safe.”

Porsche waves her and her bodyguard away, more focused on cleaning her station.

“Are we on #38 or #39?”

“If you can’t remember, then you must be a terrible lover.”

“Why don’t you come find out what sort of lover I am, then?” the customer asks before sipping her gin and tonic. 

Walked right into that one. “I’m good, thanks.”

The customer takes out her phone. “#38.”

“Thanks for the clarification,” Porsche says sarcastically. 

“How’s your sister? Has she applied to schools yet?”

Porsche sighs. She doesn’t even remember telling her about Chay, but maybe she overheard. Or has super sonic hearing. “She’s fine. Like every other starstruck teenager. She’s so obsessed with those collectible photo cards that I doubt she’s focusing on her applications.”

“I’m sure she’ll be fine. She’s got a smart sister.”

Porsche snorts. “Yeah, sure.” Chay has a good shot at college. If Porsche was just a bit smarter, she would’ve figured out how to get them out of debt and Chay into a better high school and pay off her Uncle’s gambling-

“Hey.” Kinn taps on the bar. “Stop that.”

“What?”

“Stop thinking you’re not enough. Your sister is happy, right? That’s all that matters.” Kinn taps the back of her hand next. It’s the first time she’s touched her. “Being an older sibling is tough. But you’re doing great.”

Porsche doesn’t know what to say. Right about now, something snarky or sarcastic would be best, or maybe making fun of Kinn’s ridiculous ombré pantsuit. Kinn said it so confidently, like it was true. 

Thank you. “Tha-”

Pony Tail walks over. 

“Khun Kinn.”

Something silent passes between them. The playful look that Kinn wears whenever she sits at Porsche’s station is gone, and something more hardened is left. 

Kinn quickly gets up and puts down another tip. “Get home safe, Porsche.”

“You too,” Porsche says, instead of asking what could have possibly transpired that would whisk Kinn away, leaving half her drink behind.

Porsche looks at her phone. It’s a little past midnight. 

Kinn has not shown up yet. 

Not that Porsche is waiting. Not that Kinn shows up at an exact time every day, anyways. 

Customers come and go. There’s another woman giving her a once over. Porsche returns her smile but makes busy with cleaning up. But even that woman leaves too when the last call rings. 

Oh well. 

Porsche puts a tray of washed glasses into a cabinet underneath the bar. 

Guess 39 was the fatal number. 

Porsche pours herself a shot of something. It’s a little reckless to do, but her throat burns anyways. 

It was fun while it lasted. 

She packs up her bag, bids Yok and the busboy goodnight. 

Porsche steps outside and into the hum of a flickering streetlight. 

She doesn’t know when she started looking forward to Kinn coming by every day. But she knows her disappointment of Kinn’s absence means that it existed. 

It’s fine. You’ve got a little sister at home. And you have your best friend waiting for you, fully charged and ready for-

“Better not drive home drunk.”

Porsche looks up. 

It’s Kinn. She’s still in that ombré suit, except it looks like she was in a street fight. And won. Her blouse isn’t tucked into her pants anymore, her belt has gone missing, and Porsche is pretty sure Kinn’s jacket had three buttons. Not two. 

Oh. Kinn wears suspenders under her jacket. That’s. That’s nice. 

How can someone who looks so dirty also still look this hot?

Kinn walks to her, and Porsche expects her to be limping, but she’s not. Her eyes are on Porsche only, and she’s wearing that stupid flirty grin again. 

“What’s a girl gotta do to get a drink around here? Or are you closed?”

Yes. We’re closed. 

“Go out with me,” Porsche stumbles out. “Take me on a date. Or something.” 

Kinn raises a sculpted eyebrow. “Yeah? You like the roughed up look?” Kinn steps a little closer. “Or was 39 the magic number?”

“I take it back, go fuck yourself,” Porsche huffs before turning in her heel. 

Kinn catches her by the wrist and twirls her back. “No take backs,” she murmurs. 

“Okay,” Porsche gives in. It’s so easy to say yes when Kinn’s hand feels so steady and sure. Things Porsche is not. “When?”

Kinn slips her hand into Porsche’s. “How about right now?”

Last week on Twitter someone said they did the math and now it is far easier to get into Harvard than it is to become an agented author. Do you think that math works out? Thanks!

That's a fun sound-bite, but like many things on Twitter, I call shenanigans.

BARE STATISTICS-wise, maybe it's true. Kinda. But in order to know for sure, we'd have to know a lot more info. I read all different stats for how many students Harvard accepts -- some say around 3%-ish for regular admission, 7%-ish for for Early Action -- some say 4.-something% total -- some say 5 in 100 or 2000 out of 40000 applicants (5%), and others say 2000 out of 60000 applicants (3.5%ish) -- BUT WHATEVER, we get it, it's competitive, to keep things simple, let's say "less than 5% of students applying to Harvard get into Harvard."

The problem is, of course, we have zero idea how many writers are querying in a given year, or even how many agents there are, or how many writers a given agent might take on in a year, let alone what % of writers who are querying in a given year end up agented. Based on MY inbox, it's probably like .10% maybe -- I hardly take anything on. But then, I already rep a lot of people (do they count? Or are we only counting NEWLY repped people?). Of course, I'm hardly the only agent, and I'm certainly less Hungry for new talent than many, because my dance card is already pretty full. So let's say 1 in 100 of new people who query end up with an agent. 1%. That seems reasonable to me -- and just looking at that number, it's obvious, yes, it's harder to get an agent than it is to get into Harvard.

However. We don't know, in EITHER case, what % of the students applying or writers querying are even qualified. You need way above a 4.0 and nearly perfect SAT scores and great recommendations and extracurriculars and community leadership AND a great essay, and on and on in order to even be in the running to get into Harvard. That is many years of dedicated work, plus being just extra smart, and probably lucky -- plus, it costs money to apply, and most people probably only get one chance to even try.

While being an Agented Writer does involve hard work and some luck, the bar for entry is significantly lower! Basically what you need is a great manuscript, and perseverance. Querying is free. And, most importantly, you can keep trying -- while lots of people DO quit and take themselves out of the running, the fact is, most people who end up with agents don't get signed on their first try.

Qualification-wise, based on my inbox, a HEFTY percentage of queriers are just not even qualified, they are barking up the wrong tree, they have not done any research, their work is not written in a language that I know how to read, or it's a category I don't rep, etc -- they are out of the running immediately. And lots and lots are okay; their manuscripts and queries are technically fine, but they aren't STANDOUTS to me.

Out of 100 people querying, probably only 10 are REALLY ready to be querying and REALLY have something that is "good enough to be published" in my opinion, and will probably end up with an agent on this project -- so IF you check all those boxes, my 1 in 100 above is in reality more like one in ten. (And lots of those people who just missed it will end up writing another book and trying again, and will end up with an agent on THAT one!)

So: No. While the bare statistics may make it seem otherwise, it's for sure easier to get an agent than it is to get into Harvard. Sorry, Twitter.
